And the Winner Is...

One week ago, HopNews offered a bottle of 300th Anniversary wine to the first person who could send a copy of their own receipt for the same by email to HopNews.
Christine Dietz (file photo) has obliged with a copy, above, and will receive the gift of one bottle of wine celebrating Hopkinton's 300th Anniversary. Colella's has sold by far the majority of their initial order, and so we suggest people get theirs while the getting is good. We are certain they'll order more, but why take the chance?

In With the New

December 27, 2013 — As part of the study of the School Street/West Main Street intersection, the engineers discovered a way to move traffic more quickly through the next intersection, too. Above, facing east, eastbound West Main Street traffic can now use the right lane, too, to proceed through the intersection and merge with though-traffic, or turn onto an I-495 ramp. The workmen above just need to blackout the "only" and right-turn arrow in the right lane to complete the job.

As for the School Street/West Main Street traffic signals that were recently installed, they will be turned on some time today.

CAUTION:  MVAs

"It Was Meant to be"

December 24, 2013 — The loving community at Golden Pond Assisted Living Facility saw months of hoping worth the wait as the statue of the Virgin Mary, refinished and repainted, was unveiled in the Chapel yesterday morning  in front of a group of standing-room-only believers.
The cement statue, believed to have been part of the Altamura family's legacy, had been unearthed as part of the construction of the expansion of the facility. It is believed the statue was supposed to preside over the grave of an infant who died young, but was too large for the cemetery. And so, she was brought home, where time has blurred the events leading up to her becoming buried.
Golden Pond Executive Director Katie Tavares, who had heard about the statue before being involved with Golden Pond, and immediately following a conversion to Catholicism, said that residents were unanimous about having the statue restored.

"Rita Kozel [photo, left] has donated her time to restore Mary," she said. Rita heard about the plight from resident Bill Wood [right].

A few people attending felt the unearthing of Mary, and the timing of the completion of the restoration so near Christmas, are miraculous.

Ms. Kozel said, "People all over the world throw dirt on her," a metaphor for her circumstance and the ridicule Roman Catholics endure as a result of their beliefs. "They say she doesn't matter." She said this triumph shows she does matter.

"The Chapel is a place of reflection and worship for all," said Ms. Tavares.

"The Chapel is growing in all faiths," she said, as a Star of David awaited its turn as the center of beliefs.

Minus Action Copy Plus

December 23, 2013 — Hopkinton's Main Street will be minus one quick-witted counter man and supporting cast this week as Joe Palmquist and wife Michele pack up their business, Action Copy Plus,  and reopen in Warwick, Rhode Island as Ideal Printing, LLC. Above, Monday afternoon a few customers-turned-friends (and more off-camera) listen as Mary Murphy reads a tribute to the couple that she wrote in their honor.

"If I had known people felt this way about us, we wouldn't have moved," said Joe, tongue planted firmly in cheek, as always.

The couple will continue to service commercial and school accounts from their new location, but will not offer "onesy" copies to walk-ins as they have.

Local Man Breaks Out on His Own: Bar-low Heating and A/C, Inc.

December 23, 2013 — It isn't often these days that an individual can boast 30 years in a business working for just two companies the entire time. It shows loyalty, which means a lot when knocking on a door for a new job, that inevitable step up the ladder; but it means even more than that.
Michael Hutchinson, a familiar Hopkinton face, has gained the experience needed to take the next step on his own ladder of success.
"I felt it would be better for me and my family to realize the American dream of having your own business," he said today.

"I am offering 24 hour repair service for oil heat. It is really beneficial for people who may buy from a discount oil company, which might not have a burner technician on staff. This way, they can get the best price for oil and service.

"Installations of complex units as well as ductless ACs are other specialties of mine.

"People love the low-profile heat pumps as a supplemental, and sometimes primary, heat source for a particular room, and for a ductless A/C system. They are so quiet, most people can't tell when they are on. We use Fujitsu and Mitsubishi brands."

Mr. Hutchinson said he can offer the best price for service as well as installations without sacrificing quality.

He can be reached at 508-802-2050. Learn more here.
