Penny Meadow Lane
Neighbors Seek Solution December 18, 2013 —
Penny meadow Lane neighbors, like Chad
Thompson, above, right, braved the elements last
night, dodging plow trucks and sanders
to find a spot to park Downtown and plead their case
to Selectmen. Mr. Thompson offered himself as a
spokesman for the group which received a letter from
the Town of Hopkinton informing them that 25 years of plowing and sanding of their
"common driveway" by the town's DPW was coming to an end.
The majority have homes on South Mill Street, but
driveways on Penny Meadow Lane (photo). The neighbors had some hydraulic cement poured into some of the potholes, mitigating the most troubling circumstance for the time being. But the ownership of the driveway is in question; not even the town's own GIS system designates an owner. When Selectman Chair John Mosher arrived to the meeting late, apparently having been well-versed on the subject matter beforehand, he suggested the group meet with Town Manager Norman Khumalo. That was met with some unintelligible, but disagreeable sounds from the seated gathering. One woman said they tried that, and believing an agreement had been reached with Mr. Khumalo, they then received the agreement with conditions that they had not agreed to. The Selectmen decided to investigate ownership and for the DPW to continue its past practices until they meet again with some answers about ownership. Builder Finley Perry was on hand with another trial balloon for development of 32 acres of property he and others own in the Elmwood Park area. He said it would change the way Hopkinton is perceived at its "gateway." Mr. Perry was instrumental in moving the Legacy project forward through the Land Use Study Committee he chaired. Mr. Perry and partner Steven Zieff, former Legacy Farms Project manager, spoke of what could be done in terms of a mixed-use development, the type that had been designed and permitted for the Downtown a few years ago. That was just one of the possibilities. They showed a Power Point presentation illustrating the types of buildings that might offer the same thing: a New Balance building, Faneuil Hall, and the former Bakers Chocolate complex in Dorchester Lower Mills as well as many others. After the presentation, hurried at the request of Chair John Mosher due to other business waiting, Selectman Vice-Chair Ben Palleiko said that he thought he saw a 7-8 story building in one of the slides. "You saw 15-20 stories, too," said Mr. Perry. "But we aren't looking to build 15-20 stories," said Mr. Perry, denying the latter, but not the former. |

"Three R's" Reading, wRiting, Running December 17, 2013 — As a qualifier for the B. A. A. Boston Marathon, mother of four Ann-Michele Dragsbaek (Ann-Michele's Uptown Hair Design) was more than a little disappointed that thousands of numbers would not be available for the 2014 Boston Marathon due to preferential treatment given to those who did not finish this year's April 15 race as a result of the horrific act of violence against bystanders near the Finish Line. But a few weeks ago, the B. A. A. offered invitational numbers to people for writing an essay about how the bombing affecting them in a profound way. "I immediately wrote one," she said today. "Where's Mom?" three of her watching kids asked frantically two minutes after the photo above was taken by her daughter Maddie, and the first bomb exploded near the Finish Line. People were running toward them in the opposite direction. "They were only a block away," she said. She had already made it across. The essay is in the hands of the B. A. A., because it was an online form, but it earned her a confirmed spot in this year's 26.2 mile run. "Not everyone's essay was accepted," she said. As for how it affected her photographer daughter? "Even a couple of weeks ago, Maddie said, 'I'm still not over it.'," she said. |

Use Caution Parking
Downtown December 17, 2013 — Weather being what it is, and manpower what it is, the DPW will get to clearing the Downtown of snow Wednesday evening, at the end of the current storm, according to DPW Director, John Westerling. Until then, people are forced to exit their vehicles on the street side, instead of the sidewalk side, as illustrated by the mound of snow in the photo above. So, for those bringing passengers Downtown, for now, have them sit behind the driver. |
