International Marathon Museum Taking Shape in Hopkinton
December 2, 2013 — Years of visioning, planning, posturing and hard work are paying off for idea-man Timothy Kilduff as he and architect Scott Richardson presented his concepts for an International Marathon Center to the Planning Board this evening.
Mr. Kilduff, founder of the Hopkinton Athletic Association and the current 26.2 Foundation, has laid the groundwork for community acceptance of the idea with his work in both commissioning marathon-related statues for Hopkinton or facilitating others in doing so.
In the past few years, the "Spirit of the Marathon" by world-renown Sculptor Mico Kaufman was placed on Weston Nurseries land on East Main Street; "The Starter" of George V. Brown by Hopkinton sculptor Michael Alfano was placed on Hopkinton Common; and in April of this year, "Yes You Can" of Team Hoyt by Texas Sculptor Mike Tabor was unveiled (Video) at Center School.
The center is planned on land that will be accessed through the road of the hoped-for athletic center that will be leased on a long-term basis, according to a Request For Proposals that was recently made public. The land at 45 East Main Street is to be conveyed first to the town by Legacy Farms, and then to a sports center developer.
One member thought that the structure may be out of place with the existing streetscape, but Member John Coutinho countered that people were initially opposed to i. m. pei's glass and steel pyramid in front of the Louvre in Paris.
Other Planning Board comments were largely positive. Member John Ferrari advised those in attendance that the designs of the Marathon Center and the planned, but yet to be decided Athletic Center, should be coordinated to look as if they were conceived at the same time, and not just lumped together.
Architect Scott Richardson said after the meeting that the group hopes to have their engineering and fundraising done in one year for the 15-16 acre, $15-$20 million parcel. The group and the landowner have signed a letter of intent to purchase the land, according to Mr. Richardson, upon which to build the 30,000 sq. ft. center.
A written piece [Large file] put together for public distribution lays out the reasons for such an endeavor: Preserve and advance the importance and contributions of the marathon. Advance the ideals of sportsmanship, competition, fair play, and the human spirit. Increase awareness of the connection between democracy, the Battle of Marathon, and the marathon run. Strengthen local, regional, and international ties between Marathon host countries. Advance the frame work of marathon participation. Connect nutrition, fitness, exercise, and how they contribute to a healthy life style. Create a center for gathering and sharing the best marathon and lifestyle practices.

Tall Tree Takes Time To Trim

Saturday, November 30, 2013 10:14 pm A motorist reported an aggressive operator who just exited Route 495 to West Main Street. Officer William Burchard checked the area with a negative find. 9:25 pm A resident of Colella Farm Road reported that a vehicle was in front of his house with three teens inside of it acting suspicious. When the caller approached the vehicle they took off. Sgt. Michael Sutton checked the area with a negative find. 9:24 pm A caller reported that a motor vehicle was all over the roadway and had turned on Maria Lane. Officer William Burchard responded and advised that the vehicle was parked for the night. 4:53 pm A mother and four boys spoke with Sgt. Michael Sutton regarding something suspicious they found at the park on Hayden Rowe Street. 4:17 pm A walk-in complained about an orange Porche that just passed him on Grove Street and was now parked at a Main Street business. Officer William Burchard responded and spoke with the operator. 2:39 pm A Briarcliff Drive resident reported that a suspicious motor vehicle that was in front of the house left the area at a high rate of speed when the caller pulled out of their driveway. Officer Gregg DeBoer checked the area with a negative find. 2:50 am A resident of Hayden Rowe Street reported that their alarm panel showed that the basement door was open and she believed she heard something on the first floor. Two officers responded and advised that the residence was secure. 12:20 am While in route to an alarm call Sgt. Scott vanRaalten checked a motor vehicle on Nancy Lane and subsequently issued a criminal application for possession of marijuana with intent to distribute.

Thursday, November 28, 2013 5:58 pm A 911 caller reported receiving suicidal text messages from a friend in Canton. The Canton Police Department was contacted and responded. 3:57 pm A 911 caller reported an erratic operator on East Main Street. Sgt. Michael Sutton responded and located the motor vehicle. The operator was issued a verbal warning for distracted driving. 2:54 pm A caller reported an erratic operator on School Street heading towards West Main Street. Officer Matthew McNeil checked the area with a negative find. 2:16 am Officer Linda Higgins stopped a motor vehicle on West Main Street and subsequently arrested a 22 year-old male from Grafton and charged him with OUI Liquor and Motor Vehicle Lights Violation. 1:55 am A resident of West Main Street reported that a vehicle pulled into her driveway, put it's high beams on and started looking for something. The called advised that it may have been related to a hit and run accident from earlier. Three officers checked the area but could not locate the vehicle. 1:00 am Officer Aaron O'Neil checked a motor vehicle on West Main Street and advised that he destroyed a small amount of marijuana at the scene.
Wednesday, November 27, 2013 10:39 pm A resident of Hilltop Road reported a possible teen drinking party at the end of the street. Two officers responded and advised that a small amount of alcohol was destroyed on scene. 10:26 pm A Hopkinton resident reported that she was inside her vehicle, not sure where she was and claimed that she felt like she wanted to harm herself. A trace of her cell phone located her on Belknap Street in Westborough. The Westborough Police Department responded and advised that she was transported to the hospital. 10:24 pm A resident reported a hit and run motor vehicle accident at a construction site on West Main Street. Officer Gregg DeBoer checked the area for the vehicle with a negative find. 11:46 am A caller from Maine reported that his daughter called him and stated that her step-father had pushed her to the floor. Three officers responded to Hayden Rowe Street and subsequently arrested a 44 year-old male from Hopkinton and charged him with Assault and Battery. |

very successful fall athletic season with the teams
boasting a record of 81-47-10. Fay School is an
independent co-educational school in Southborough,
MA serving students in Pre-Kindergarten through
grade nine, with an optional boarding program in
grades seven through nine. Above is a photo of
Sydney Pearson. Sydney received the Earnest Effort
Award for Fay’s girls varsity soccer team. Sydney
consistently radiated positivity and enthusiasm and
her behavior on the field was always exemplary.
During games, she went for every fifty-fifty ball,
no matter the size of her opponent. She went all out
for every sprint and exerted every ounce of energy
she had. She was a huge part to the success of the
team.

Turkey Bowl Champs
December 1, 2013 — The 12th Annual Turkey Bowl Football Tournament was played at Hopkinton High School on Friday, November 29th. The annual tournament continues to grow with 10 teams competing this year - several of the new teams were made up of recent Hopkinton graduating classes. The winners this year were the "Young Gunnaz", who have now won the championship trophy 6 of the last 7 years. It was a highly competitive event with large numbers of talented Hopkinton athletes of the past coming together. But most importantly there was great camaraderie amongst the participants in this well organized event. This is a truly unique community event that is part of what makes Hopkinton such a special town. It is also a good time to thank those who help us make progress in business and in the community. Two of those people, experts at what they do, architect Jeanette Thomson and builder Michael Low (Autumn Builders) collaborated on the design and construction of a three season porch addition to a home in the Glen Road area. Enclosed porches are becoming a popular alternative to decks in Hopkinton, due to the tendency of homebuilders to leave a woodland buffer between backyard neighbors. Although it is aesthetically sound, the tradeoff is mosquitoes, which in recent years have been carrying more diseases. A three-season porch has protection from insects with screening, as well as protection from wind, with glass panel replacements. To see the finished exterior, please mouse-over the image above. Fosca (Macari) Picozza,
91, passed away peacefully on November
28, 2013 in Framingham, MA. She was married for 60
years to Amleto Picozza who passed away in 2006. She was
a 50-year resident of Stamford, CT and most recently a
seven-year resident of Hopkinton, MA Fosca was born in
Settefrati, Italy, and immigrated to the U.S. with her
husband and children. They came to live in Stamford
where they opened and ran a tailor shop for many
years. Fosca’s main focus was always her children and
extended family. She loved to cook and the holidays
were always special. Her fondest memory was meeting
Padre Pio when she was a young wife and mother. Padre
Pio gave her a blessing she felt was with her throughout
her life. Fosca is survived by three
children and their spouses, Josephine and Walter
Zupancich of New York, Augusto and Wendy Picozza, of
Florida and Enrico and Linda Picozza of Hopkinton
MA. She also leaves seven grandchildren and one
great-grandchild. A funeral Mass will be
celebrated Tuesday, December 3, 2013 at 9:45 a.m. in St.
John the Evangelist Church, 20 Church Street, Hopkinton,
MA. Burial will take place at 1:30 p.m. in St. John's
Cemetery, Darien, CT. Funeral arrangement have
been entrusted to the Callanan

Thanksgiving and Chanukah
Coincide November 27, 2013 — The coincidence of the first day of Chanukah and Thanksgiving has been a reason for conversation among many people this year, but it may also be the reason for the small-than-usual group that got together at the Hopkinton Common this evening to sing, pray, and to light the Menorah. David Auslander, who moved to town with his family nearly ten years ago, took over the role of organizing the Hopkinton Jewish community for the yearly ritual. He built the Menorah in 2006, and his family has been leading the prayers and singing ever since. Today, his daughter Robyn led everyone in song, and son Stephen flipped the switch to illuminate the two lights. Below, Robyn Auslander, center right, leads the singing.

Officer William Burchard located the vehicle on Winter Street and spoke with the operator. 9:40 am The owner of a School Street business reported that they believed they interrupted a breaking and entering/larceny on Saturday night. They caught a female on the property who then ran towards Pinecrest Village when discovered. Officer Aaron O'Neil responded and took a report. |

1, 2013 — Massachusetts State Police units continue to
respond to dozens of motor vehicle crashes on Route 290
westbound, near Exit 14, in Worcester. Starting around
6:45 a.m. today icy conditions have caused more than 70
cars and three tractor-trailers to crash. As of this
point approximately 30 people have suffered minor
injuries.
