November 12, 2013 — On early Monday morning the State Police Barracks in Millbury received numerous 911 calls for a wrong-way operator on Route 495 southbound in Hopkinton. As several cruisers headed to the area the vehicle was found stopped in the median strip, facing the wrong direction, with its lights out and the engine running.

Troopers found the driver, STUART KIRBY, to have a heavy odor of an alcoholic beverage on his breath. KIRBY, 53, of Revere believed he was on a side-street off of the highway and didn‘t understand he was on the highway.

KIRBY needed assistance from troopers in getting out of his car, was unsteady on his feet and needed help in keeping his balance. KIRBY  was medically evaluated by Hopkinton EMS due to some statements relative to his health. After being evaluated KIRBY was taken into custody and transported to the Millbury State Police Barracks. School Committee Votes Differential for Honors Math

Visions for early childhood education

by Muriel Kramer

November 8, 2013 — First on the agenda at last night’s School Committee Meeting was Superintendent Dr. Cathy MacLeod’s File photo, below) introduction of Evan Bishop as the new High School Principal; Bishop has worked in Hopkinton for 9 years first as a guidance counselor, then assistant principal, interim principal and now principal. When asked why he said yes to the job this time, last year while interim principal he had chosen not to be considered for the job for personal reasons, he replied that it was really for two reasons, “first for Dr. MacLeod and her leadership; but really it’s about the staff and the kids.”

Bishop was then joined at the table by Curriculum Director Robert Berlo (File photo) to seek the School Committee’s approval on a new GPA weighting variant for accelerated classes, currently accelerated math is the only subject that fits the bill. Accelerated math has been developed to challenge the strongest math students and prepare them for a more extensive offering of Advanced Placement (AP) options as juniors and seniors in high school. Previously the decision had been to weight the grades for accelerated math the same as those for honors math even though accelerated math was acknowledged to be more challenging and meant to move at a faster pace. The thinking at the time was to avoid encouraging students to take accelerated math for the wrong reasons, the higher grade differential. Resident and parent Melissa Abate voiced concerns last spring at a SC meeting that this left many students without a boost in credit for an easily recognized higher work load, and made the point that young students would find it hard to justify working that much harder for the same credit differential.  The administration took the feedback from Abate and others; they decided to make the change, granting students in accelerated math a differential higher than honors but not as high as AP level courses.  Students will be awarded the differential credit retroactively for last year as well.  The SC unanimously approved the change.

Dr. MacLeod also spoke to the successful forum held at the High School the night before highlighting the administrative team that was well attended and well received. Parent Dawn Ronan in the audience for the SC meeting was truly enthusiastic about what she heard at the forum the previous evening.  “I thought the opportunity to raise questions and hear from every administrator how they are collaborating to provide consistency that follows the kids from building to building was terrific.  I really liked hearing the principals talk about what they are personally excited about.  It was exciting to hear their excitement. It makes you realize that, wow, there is a lot going on behind those doors.”

Next up Center School Principal Lauren Dubeau (File photo) and Dr. MacLeod shared their vision for the future of early childhood education in the district. Their vision includes an expanded offering for preschoolers in the district hopefully doubling the size from two to four classes and eventually accommodating the preschool in the same building as Kindergarten and first grade.  According to MacLeod, putting our youngest learners together would increase intervention opportunities, maximize effective use of therapists, and provide for more purposeful professional development opportunities.  They are also targeting offering full day Kindergarten (FDK) for all students. The presentation referenced that of 310 districts in Massachusetts, 208 currently offer district wide FDK and 74 offer tuition based partial FDK as Hopkinton does.  Further they spoke to the statistic in town that of 192 students enrolled in the district’s program, 104 are FDK and 88 HDK; of those 88 students half were wanted FDK but didn’t get selected in the lottery process.  Dubeau and MacLeod both spoke to the advantages of FDK over what is in place now citing the restrictions that come with having some students in HDK. “We have an obligation to provide an equitable learning experience for all.”  Those that are in the FDK program have an expanded opportunity for application and practice, but not expanded instruction. MacLeod emphasized that if we are able to offer free FDK, we would not offer HDK. If the program is tuition based, we would have to offer HDK.

The public is invited and encouraged to help shape the emerging vision for Hopkinton’s youngest learners at a forum to be held in the Center School Cafeteria on Monday November 18th from 7-8:30PM. Childcare will be provided.

Also upcoming, the public is invited and encouraged to participate in Public Forums to help shape the new Strategic Plan for the schools.  November 13th at 6 PM in the HS cafeteria, November 14th at 7:30 AM at the Fire Station meeting room (enter in rear of building, 2nd floor), November 19th at 10 AM at the Senior Center and November 19th 7 PM at the High School Auditorium.
