Richard Spindel, 80
Richard Spindel, 80, of Milford died on
November 10, 2013 at Milford Regional Medical Center. His
was predeceased by his wife of 48 years, Frances Spindel,
who died in December of 2004.
Mr. Spindel retired from Metal Bellows Corporation in Sharon where he received an Award of Achievement from NASA in recognition of “significant aid and assistance toward a flawless mission” for the historic first landing of men on the moon – the Apollo 11 Moon Landing on July 20, 1969. Richard was born on November 28, 1932 and was the son of Nathaniel and Irene Spindel of Milford. He was a Corporal in the Army and received the Occupation Medal (Germany) and the National Defense Service Medal. He is survived by two daughters and their husbands, Kathy and Jim Herne of Milford and Terri and Joe Spindel of Uxbridge and his son David Spindel of Milford. He also leaves a sister, Norma Brennick and her husband John of New Hampshire, two sisters-in-law, Agnes Penney and Claire Robbins and her husband Walter of Hopkinton, brother-in-law Charles Garbarino of Ashland and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother Robert Spindel who died in April of this year and Robert’s wife Eleanor, who died in 1993. Richard also leaves his close friends Terry and Judy Thomas and his dear friend Dina Bilodeau. He will be remembered as a very devoted Dad, an avid outdoorsman and generous gardener who kept everyone he knew in fresh tomatoes and vegetables. A funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday, November 16 at 10:00 a.m. in St. John the Evangelist Church, 20 Church Street, Hopkinton. Burial with military honors will follow in North Purchase Cemetery, Milford. Calling hours at the Callanan Cronin Funeral Home, 34 Church Street, Hopkinton are Saturday November 16 from 8:15 to 9:30 a.m., prior to the funeral Mass. |

Operator Arrested by State Police for OUI on Route 495 in Hopkinton
Troopers found the driver, STUART KIRBY,
to have a heavy odor of an alcoholic beverage on his breath. KIRBY,
53, of Revere believed he was on a side-street off of the highway
and didn‘t understand he was on the highway. KIRBY needed assistance from troopers in
getting out of his car, was unsteady on his feet and needed help in
keeping his balance. KIRBY was medically evaluated by Hopkinton EMS
due to some statements relative to his health. After being evaluated
KIRBY was taken into custody and transported to the Millbury State
Police Barracks. KIRBY was charged with OUI 2nd offense,
wrong way operation and negligent operation of a motor vehicle.
KIRBY was bailed out on personal recognizance. |

Invitational Cheer
The last invitational cheerleading
competition was held over the weekend at the Whitman-Hanson
Invitational meet in Whitman MA. The Hopkinton Cheerleaders finished
very strong, taking first place in their division, besting several
other teams from the eastern Massachusetts. Now it’s on to the
South Regional Championship next weekend, November 17, at Dartmouth
HS, Dartmouth MA., Time: TBA. The Hopkinton Cheerleaders will be
going up against some of the best cheer squads in Southern MA. Then
it’s on to the State Championships. Come and support this fantastic

Road, Sherborn, on East Main Street and charged her
with Failure to Drive In Right Lane Incident Log Sunday, November 10, 2013 5:39 pm A motorist reported that a vehicle was traveling on the divided highway heading east on West Main Street. Officer Peter Booth checked the area with a negative find. 4:51 pm The parents of a thirteen year-old boy from East Street called 911 to report that their son texted them saying that someone rang their doorbell several times and then tried to open the door. Three officers responded and advised that it was the boy's girlfriend and father who were ringing the doorbell. 12:28 pm The owner of a Hayward Street business reported that it looked like someone kicked in the basement door last night. Access was gained but it did not appear that anything was taken. Three officers responded and took a report. 9:17 am A caller from Curtis Road reported that a commercial landscaping company was operating in violation of a town by-law. Officer Patrick O'Brien responded and shut them down for the day. 7:08 am A resident of Ridge Road reported that construction equipment was being loaded in violation of a town by-law. Officer Stephen Buckley responded but was unable to locate any violation.

State Police reported that a vehicle just got off of
Route 495 at exit 21B and apparently hit a guard
rail and was operating erratically. Officer Jacob
Campbell checked the area but was unable to locate
the vehicle. Saturday, November 9, 2013 9:00 pm A caller from Fruit Street reported that he broke up a party and believed that youths were still hanging around in the woods. Officer Gregg DeBoer checked the area but did not locate any youths. 8:52 pm Officer Aaron O'Neil checked a motor vehicle on Hayden Rowe Street and advised that he confiscated a small amount of alcohol and marijuana from the youth occupants.

passing through the woods behind their house. The
caller was advised that hunting season is now open. Friday, November 8, 2013 11:55 am A walk-in from Davis Road spoke with Officer Stephen Buckley regarding a suspicious motor vehicle. 9:19 am A property manager from Memory Lane reported that a port-a-john was lit on fire overnight and that cameras on site showed the incident happen. Officer David Shane responded and took a report. 8:39 am An Erika Drive resident reported that her mailbox was damaged overnight and there were smashed pumpkins in the roadway. Sgt. Joseph Bennett responded to take a report. 1:51 am Sgt. John Porter stopped a motor vehicle on East Main Street and subsequently arrested a 43 year-old female from Sherborn and charged her with Failure to Drive In Right Lane and OUI Liquor. |

Eleventh Hour of the Eleventh Day
of the Eleventh Month November 11, 2013 — Hopkinton Veterans from American Legion Post 202, led by Adjutant Michael Whalen, paid respects to those lost in battle, and to their fellow veterans who have passed on since the last Veterans Day in 2012. Above, they salute the Flag of the United States. Mary Harrington, former Selectman and wife of Marine William Harrington, followed introductory remarks by Michael Whalen and invocation by Post Chaplain Dick Brault, and remembered Emmitt T. Carey, who is memorialized in bronze on the Doughboy monument at Cookie's Corner at the Start Line of the Boston marathon. Hopkinton High School Junior Kate Schneider (Photo, below) read the memorable war poem, "In Flanders Field." Mr. Whalen welcomed Bill Mahoney from Holliston, who he introduced as a good friend. Mr. Mahoney shared a story from his time as a soldier. Next, Amelia Antoniades sang, "Proud to be an American." To conclude the ceremony of the day that marks the truce that ended WWI, and was once called Armistice Day, Mr. Whalen paid tribute with a reading of a list of veterans from Hopkinton who have passed away since last year's ceremony:

Investigation Leads to Arrest & One Pound of “Molly”
Seizure
The MDMA, commonly referred to
as Molly, was intercepted by authorities at Logan
Airport with a delivery address in Milford. The
parcel, which originated in China, was delivered to the
Milford address by a Trooper posing as a FedEx driver.
The recipient identified the owner of the package, who
subsequently came to pick up the parcel. After the owner arrived to
take possession of the package, he was taken into
custody. He was identified as DAVID SHEEHAN, 23, of
Medway. SHEEHAN was transported to the Milford
Police Department for booking. SHEEHAN is charged
with possession of a Class “C” substance and conspiracy
to violate drug laws. |

Last night, at
approximately 11:45 p.m., troopers from the
Massachusetts State Police Barracks in Holden
responded to the ramp from Rt.12 to
I-190 southbound in Worcester. Arriving
troopers found a single vehicle rolled over on the
ramp. Trooper Salvucci encountered
the operator, MATTHEW MELVIN, 24 of Shrewsbury, MA
who was uninjured in the crash. Subsequent
to Trooper Salvucci’s investigation,
MELVIN was placed under arrest and charged with
Operating Under the Influence of Alcohol and Marked
Lanes Violation. He
will be arraigned in Worcester District Court on
Tuesday, due to the Monday holiday. The
ramp was closed for approximately 45 minutes with
minimal impact on traffic. |

Graduates basic Training
Marine Private First Class Walter S. Carey,
son of George and Gail Carey of Hopkinton and a
2010 graduate of Hopkinton High School, recently
graduated from Marine Corps Basic Training at
Parris Island.
The marine completed an intensive twelve-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Marine Corps values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills. After Parris Island he attended warfare training at Camp Lejeune, NC, for an additional four weeks. Presently, he is attending the Marine Corps Communications Electronics School (MCCES). MCCES is the Marine Corps training ground for the majority of the communications and air/ground electronic Military Occupational specialties. MCCES is located at Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center, Twenty-nine Palms, CA. |

Edgehill Road, Hopkinton, on Hayden Rowe Street and
charged him with Possession of Incident Log Thursday, November 7, 2013 8:56 pm A 911 caller reported that the gas tank fell off of her vehicle and was spilling everywhere on Hayden Rowe Street. Sgt. Michael Sutton responded to assist the Fire Department. 7:00 pm An Ash Street resident reported an unregistered solicitor. Officer Matthew McNeil responded and spoke with the solicitor who was from a non-profit organization. 6:28 pm A property caretaker from County Way reported that someone had damaged a stone wall while trying to turn around on a private roadway. Officer William Burchard responded and took a report. 5:37 pm A 911 caller from Saddle Hill Road reported that someone had rung his doorbell and when he answered the door no one was around. Officer Matthew McNeil checked the area with a negative find on anything suspicious. 5:37 pm Two officers responded to Route 495 to assist the State Police with a four car motor vehicle accident with personal injury. 4:42 pm A resident of Granite Street reported that there was a large dog in her back yard attacking her chickens and damaging the chicken coop. The Animal Control Officer was notified. 10:28 am Officer Philip Powers arrested an 18 year-old male from Hopkinton on Hayden Rowe Street and charged him with Possession of Class D Substance with Intent to Distribute and Distribution of a Controlled Substance in a School Zone. 8:00 am A caller reported that a dark blue Bronco, operated by a young male, was speeding in excess of 60mph on Lumber Street. Officer David Shane checked the area but was unable to locate the vehicle.

were multiple calls for what sounded like six or
seven gunshots in the area of Alexander Road. Three
officers checked the area and advised that a box of
fireworks was found in the roadway. Wednesday, November 6, 2013 12:30 pm A 911 caller from Smith Road reported that shortly after returning home she heard of door shut on the second floor of her house. Five officers responded and stated that a red vehicle registered to Framingham was seen leaving the area. The house was checked and secured.

Officer John Moran responded and advised that all was quiet upon his arrival. 5:13 pm A 13 year-old girl from Susan Drive called 911 to report that she was home alone and that someone tried to open their front door. Officer William Burchard responded and spoke with a solicitor who was from a non profit organization. 12:48 pm A motorist reported that a landscaper was in the roadway on Pond Street and started swearing at them. Dr. MacLeod also spoke to the successful forum held at the High School the night before highlighting the administrative team that was well attended and well received. Parent Dawn Ronan in the audience for the SC meeting was truly enthusiastic about what she heard at the forum the previous evening. “I thought the opportunity to raise questions and hear from every administrator how they are collaborating to provide consistency that follows the kids from building to building was terrific. I really liked hearing the principals talk about what they are personally excited about. It was exciting to hear their excitement. It makes you realize that, wow, there is a lot going on behind those doors.” Next up Center School Principal Lauren Dubeau (File photo) and Dr. MacLeod shared their vision for the future of early childhood education in the district. Their vision includes an expanded offering for preschoolers in the district hopefully doubling the size from two to four classes and eventually accommodating the preschool in the same building as Kindergarten and first grade. According to MacLeod, putting our youngest learners together would increase intervention opportunities, maximize effective use of therapists, and provide for more purposeful professional development opportunities. They are also targeting offering full day Kindergarten (FDK) for all students. The presentation referenced that of 310 districts in Massachusetts, 208 currently offer district wide FDK and 74 offer tuition based partial FDK as Hopkinton does. Further they spoke to the statistic in town that of 192 students enrolled in the district’s program, 104 are FDK and 88 HDK; of those 88 students half were wanted FDK but didn’t get selected in the lottery process. Dubeau and MacLeod both spoke to the advantages of FDK over what is in place now citing the restrictions that come with having some students in HDK. “We have an obligation to provide an equitable learning experience for all.” Those that are in the FDK program have an expanded opportunity for application and practice, but not expanded instruction. MacLeod emphasized that if we are able to offer free FDK, we would not offer HDK. If the program is tuition based, we would have to offer HDK. Millbury received numerous 911 calls for a wrong-way operator on
