School Department Leadership Forum Teaches, Listens, Informs

November 6, 2013 — Superintendent Cathy MacLeod (White blazer, center-left), who began her Hopkinton employment on July 1, 2013, but has already survived tests of her mettle during tragedy and controversy, hosted an evening of questions and answers between the public and her administrative staff, including all of the school principals, vice-principals, Curriculum Director, IT director, Human Resources Director, Business Manager and others.
Each administrator introduced themselves briefly before the public began asking questions.
Dr. MacLeod explained that the schools are coordinated to help students transition from one to another, not only physically, but academically, too, with curricula that is coordinated from Center School on up through the system.
Administrators explained Response Intervention, where a student who needs to be challenged more, as well as a student who needs a helping hand, are both given the amount of attention they need.
Mother of three children in the Hopkinton schools, Ruth Ann Cote (Photo, left), alluding to the loss of administrators recently, and in recent years, asked, "How do you keep them?"
"Provide them opportunity for growth," answered Dr. MacLeod.
A short time later, in answer to a similar question, Human Resources Director Kim Pulnick said that she uses the merit principle of hiring, to cast as broad a net as possible, but agreed with Dr. MacLeod's viewpoint, too.
"We are building an internal pipeline," she said. "We have had some teachers who want to move into administration."
Dr. MacLeod added, "We have had a good hiring process. Look at the results," she said, looking at her team.
Elmwood School Principal David Ljungberg (Photo, right) explained that modern teaching is unlike days past when teachers closed their doors and used their own teaching style.
"It is really about collaboration," he said. "Teaching has changed."
The theme throughout the meeting centered on a multi-tiered approach, a process of collaboration, not only between teachers in a building, but between schools and administrators as well, to provide each student with their level of learning in a supportive environment.
The School Committee meets November 7, 2013 at 7:30 pm in the Middle School Library.

Cournoyer Settlement Agreement, Letter of Resignation Released

November 4, 2013 — In what could be described as heralding a new era of transparency, Hopkinton Superintendent of Schools Dr. Cathy MacLeod has responded with dispatch to a public records request and released the Letter of Resignation and the Settlement Agreement  between the Hopkinton Public School District and former Hopkinton High School Principal Michael Cournoyer. Cournoyer's contract of Employment that began on July 1, 2013 was scheduled to expire on June 30, 2016. Instead, Mr. Cournoyer has written a letter of resignation effective January 31, 2014 at 11:59 pm, and Superintendent Cathy MacLeod has accepted it. Instead of a buyout of his entire $405,000 three-year contract, the district will pay him $54,310.20 during the interim.

Both parties agree that they disagree, and in doing so arrived at a settlement that keeps Mr. Cournoyer on paid administrative leave until his resignation is effective, and keeps his health care coverage until that time. Following termination, Mr. Cournoyer is eligible to continue on the Town's health care plan at his cost through COBRA. Both parties have released one another of any liabilities or claims.

Hopkinton has promised not to oppose Mr. Cournoyer seeking unemployment compensation, and Mr. Cournoyer promises to seek employment during the leave. He will receive a lump sum vacation pay up to the end of October, but no more than that.

If he receives a position elsewhere, his pay from Hopkinton will be reduced by whatever he earns.

Mr. Cournoyer agrees to direct all inquiries regarding his employment at Hopkinton to the school's Director of Human Resources, and Dr. MacLeod has promised a positive letter of reference. In predictable boilerplate language, both parties agreed not to take action against one another. Read the documents here. (Facebook and Twitter followers were alerted immediately.)

On a forward-looking note, Dr. MacLeod has invited the community to join her Wednesday, November 6, 2013 at 7:00 pm in the High School Library as she introduces her administrative team.

She wrote, "Please join me in changing the conversation to focus on where we are going while learning from where we have been."

Hawthorn to Present to
Planning Board Tonight

November 4, 2013 — The Planning Board will host a presentation this evening by a group that would like to build a retirement community on about 6 acres of Legacy Farms land on East Main Street, about half the available parcel.
     They describe it as such:
"The Hopkinton Retirement Residence is a 130-suite facility for seniors. Our concept is designed for those who are still ambulatory but in need of some support. Private rooms afford the advantages of independent living while the services included provide support, security and friendship. The private suites include studio, one and two bedroom versions. Each is similar to a conventional dwelling unit except a kitchen is not included.
"Services include three prepared meals daily, housekeeping, laundering, private bus transportation and various activities. Staff is “in house” 24 hours a day. The monthly rent payment covers the private room, all services and utilities.
Typically our resident will be a single person in their late 70’s or 80’s. Approximately 10% of the rooms will be rented by couples making a total building population of 156. Fewer than 25% of the residents will be driving their own cars."

HHS Class of 2003 Raises Money in Memory of Classmate Heather Siebert

HOPKINTON – Hopkinton High School Class of 2003 is now accepting donations for the Heather Lynne Siebert Patient Support Fund at Boston Children's Hospital.  All funds collected will be donated in memory of friend and classmate, Heather Siebert, by the Class of 2003 during their 10-year reunion event on November 30th.  This fund was named in Heather's honor and assists families of children receiving services from the hospital by helping to pay for costs not covered by insurance including parking, lodging, meals, and other needs. Donations will be accepted ongoing until Friday, November 29th.

Heather Siebert was a student of Hopkinton High School and a friend to all who knew her. While she was originally a member of the Class of 2003, unexpected and mysterious health problems forced Heather to face a long and difficult battle – a battle she faced with an inspiring level of courage and strength. Even though continuing her education was difficult at times, Heather worked hard, overcame obstacles, and ultimately graduated from HHS in 2004. She even went on to complete her freshman year at Plymouth State University despite her ongoing health needs.

Heather's disorder was never diagnosed and the sum of her ailments became known as “Heather's Syndrome.” Despite the unique challenges Heather had to face as a teenager and young adult, she always remained a caring friend, a loving daughter and sister, and a helper of those in need. Over the years, she touched many lives through her involvement with the Massachusetts Special Olympics, American Diabetes Association Child and Youth Services Committee, and the Hopkinton Athletic Association. She also worked on a committee at Boston Children's Hospital to develop and provide entertainment for teen patients. She was also a supporter of Cystic Fibrosis Research.

After battling “Heather's Syndrome” for over 10 years, Heather passed away in October 2009, leaving behind an incredible legacy of bravery, determination, and love.  In order to continue that legacy Hopkinton High School's Class of 2003 is raising money for the Heather Lynne Siebert Patient Support Fund at Boston Children's Hospital.
