Leaf Watching

October 13, 2013 — The Roving HopCam caught a group of fit old men in their seventies kayaking down the Blackstone River in Millville today, near the Millville Lock of the former Blackstone Canal, after having kayaked upriver earlier, they said. They put in and ended up at the Blackstone Gorge. The canal was built as a waterway to move goods from Worcester to Providence, contributing to the growth of Worcester as the largest inland industrial city in the United States.

The growth of the railroads — the line above follows the path adjacent to the river for most of its length —  made the canal obsolete in a few short decades after it was completed.

Pizza to Go!

October 11, 2013 — Who among us hasn't driven a motor vehicle while eating a pizza? Everyone knows the trick is to order the type of pizza with a thin amount of both cheese and sauce, so that the stuff doesn't drip onto your lap. And to heck with the turn signal when pulling out of a space as this driver was doing in front of the HopNews office. The activity was brought to our attention by chance, as they all are. No one is staking out traffic to catch scofflaws, except the police.
