Seven-Score and Ten Years Ago...

July 7, 2013 — Hopkinton resident and avid photographer and American Civil War buff John Collins captured this scene at a reenactment of the Battle of Gettysburg this past week, where in July of 1863 Union troops stopped the advancing Confederate Army, and according to some historians, turned the tide of the war.

President Abraham Lincoln paid tribute to the fallen Union soldiers months later, memorializing the place with a speech that began, "Four-score and seven years ago, our fathers brought forth upon this continent a new nation, conceived in liberty and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal. Now we are engaged in..."

The 4th Annual Heather Lynne Siebert Memorial Ride

Laconia Harley Davidson, Meredith, New Hampshire

July 13th, 2013

Heathers Ride and Friend's 4 Eva were founded in November of 2009. We are a charity organization focusing our efforts on raising money for the Heather Siebert Patient Support Fund located at Boston Children's Hospital. The Fund helps family's with children who are patients of the GI/Nutrition Services. So far we have raised over $25,000 and affected over 50 family's. The fund helps family's with expenses that are not covered by insurance such as lodging, food and clothing, just to name a few, all in an effort to allow the parents to remain with their children when they are hospitalized. (Photo from last year). The inspiration for Heather's Ride is Heather Siebert, who bravely struggled with a global system auto immune disease that began in 1997, a disease so rare that they called it Heather's Syndrome. The Hopkinton native graduated in 2004 and passed away in Oct. of 2009.

In 2012 we added The Heather Siebert Memorial Scholarship Fund at the Hopkinton High School and we are very proud to have awarded two $500.00 scholarships to two very deserving students.

How do we do this? Motorcycles, and lots of them!!! The 4th Annual Heather Lynne Siebert Memorial Ride will be held on July 13th at Laconia Harley Davidson in Meredith New Hampshire. We will take approximately 100 motorcycles on a great ride around our Lakes Region. We will have coffee and breakfast foods during registration, a great stop at one of our areas top tourist destinations and when we return to Laconia Harley Davidson, live music by The Tim and Dave Show, a free lunch and lots and lots of prizes.

Please visit our web site for more information. Heathersride.webs.com

We hope to see you all there.

Serendipity

July 5, 2013 — Blood's Pond is almost always a good place to find wildlife upon the water. The scene is not serendipitous because the photographer stumbled upon it. He did not. It is serendipitous because while photographing the great blue heron on the right, the cormorant, a diving bird, came out of the water to hold its wings out to dry, and in doing so, took its place in a position that conforms with a classic rule of thirds of artistic composition.

Hopkinton Man Rides to End Alzheimer’s

Hopkinton, MA (July 2, 2013) – Andy Andrews of Hopkinton will participate in the 2013 Ride to End Alzheimer's Saturday, July 13. Andrews will ride in support of his dad Herb.

My dad was diagnosed with Alzheimer's in the fall of 2010,” said Andrews. “I am committed to make a difference in the battle with this devastating disease. Not only for my dad in hopes that he will have the quality of life he deserves; but for me, my wife and my children.”

This year will be Andrews' second year participating in the Ride. “I would like to think I became a cyclist after training for my first ride; the 2012 Memory Ride. Since then I have ridden almost 3000 miles and recently completed the Harpoon B2B in June 2013,” said Andrews. The 43-year-old plans on riding the 100-mile century route beginning in Devens, Massachusetts.

“I hope there is cure for all forms of dementia within my lifetime so we can say goodbye to the helplessness that is associated with watching a loved one suffer without the ability to help.”

“This disease is tremendously difficult for the people affected and for their families. The Ride to End Alzheimer's not only raises much needed money for research but also raises public awareness and understanding,” said James Wessler, President/CEO of the Alzheimer’s Association, Massachusetts/New Hampshire Chapter. “We are truly grateful to Andy Andrews and all of those participating in the Ride for their commitment to finding a cure.”

This year the RIDE to End Alzheimer’s is a kickoff to the international Alzheimer’s Association International Conference (AAIC) to be held in Boston July 13-18. AAIC attracts thousands of top researchers from around the globe to share their cutting edge research. Some of those researchers will also take part in the RIDE.

Alzheimer's currently affects more than 5 million Americans. The RIDE to End Alzheimer's is the largest cycling event to support research of treatments and eventually a cure for Alzheimer’s disease. Anyone can donate to the Andy Andrews or other riders online at alzmass.org/RIDE.

The Alzheimer’s Association provides services and programs for those with Alzheimer’s, their families and professional caregivers in the form of support groups, a 24/7 Helpline, care consultation, advocacy, research, and educational programs. State Police Entry Team Fatally Shoots Suspect in Orange, Mass.

July 3, 2013 — Shortly after 5 a.m. today, the Massachusetts State Police Special Tactical Operations (STOP) Team made entry into a second-floor apartment at 18 Mechanic St. in Orange. The STOP Team was executing a search warrant in support of a narcotics investigation conducted by the State Police Detective Unit for Hampshire and Franklin Counties.

Preliminary investigation indicates that during the entry, a target of the investigation, a male who lived at that address, confronted the troopers with a firearm. A trooper or troopers discharged service weapons in response and struck the suspect. The suspect received medical aid at the scene and was then transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced deceased. At this time State Police are not releasing the identity of the male suspect. He was 23 years old and a resident of that apartment.

A female inside the apartment, who is also a target of the investigation, suffered an eye injury and is was treated and released. She is a 25-year-old resident of the apartment. Her identity is not being released at this time.

Investigators located a second firearm inside the room where the suspect confronted the troopers. The apartment is being processed by crime scene technicians. The investigation into the incident is ongoing and is being conducted by the Massachusetts State Police and the Northwestern District Attorney's Office. The district attorney will ultimately review the use of deadly force by police to determine if it was justified under the law.

This morning's warrant execution was in support of an investigation into alleged sales of oxycodone and Percocet. The State Police Detective Unit had intelligence that the male suspect had access to, and may use, firearms. As a result of that intelligence, the STOP Team was utilized for the entry.
