Auditions for ESL Show Chicago on May 23

HOPKINTON, MA (May 9, 2013) --- High school and college actors are invited to Enter Stage Left Theater’s auditions for the musical Chicago on Thursday, May 23, 2013 at the HCA Farmhouse, 98 Hayden Rowe.  Auditions are by appointment and can be scheduled by emailing Sandee Buckley at sandeezmail312@yahoo.com.  Auditions will consist of acting, singing and dancing components and those auditioning are asked to bring a 32 bar cut of any musical theater song with a copy of the sheet music for the pianist.  Rehearsals will be held on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m.; and performances will be August 9, 10, 16 & 17 at Hopedale High School.  A $300 contribution will be asked of those cast.  The show will be directed by    Michael Geary.  

“Chicago has all the elements that make a musical fun --- great music, a wonderful script, and amazing dance scenes,” said Kelly Grill, executive director at the Hopkinton Center for the Arts.  “It’s a great choice for our Summer Stock production.”

Please join me and vote for Amy Ritterbush as a candidate for School Committee for the Town of Hopkinton on May 20, 2013.

I have known Amy for several years now and continue to be amazed by how much she dedicates herself in support to the betterment of education in this town and how she stays abreast on town topics. She spends countless hours attending meetings to educate herself and to help inform residents with an unbiased view point. Amy is committed, dedicated, and focused on ensuring that the children of Hopkinton receive the best education and that Hopkinton remains on top without placing undo financial burden on our town.

Communication is a strong skill that Amy holds true to her heart. In the past two years the residents of Hopkinton have complained about the lack of communication between the School Committee and the people of Hopkinton. Amy has taken the initiative in creating a website to inform the residents of Hopkinton of the budget process and the Town's financial needs. Amy's communication background would be a great benefit to this town by having her on the School Committee. She strives to keep communication flowing and advocates for solutions.

With the amount of challenges and tasks that the school committee faces, Amy would be instrumental. She is attuned to the topics at hand and would be ready to hit the ground running with new and innovative ideas, while being mindful of the fiscal responsibilities we taxpayers expect of our School Committee. HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY FROM THE FRESH AIR FUND

Mother’s Day is a special occasion to celebrate the women in our lives who take the time to care for us. Many women in Central Massachusetts take on the role of Fresh Air mom, as they open their hearts to New York City children through The Fresh Air Fund’s Volunteer Host Family Program. This Mother’s Day, consider sharing the simple joys of summertime with a Fresh Air child.

Each summer, over 4,000 children visit volunteer host families in rural, suburban and small town communities across 13 states from Virginia to Maine and Canada.  Families find hosting so rewarding that more than 65 percent of all Fresh Air children are reinvited to visit the same host families year after year. Fresh Air children are given the opportunity to experience a world outside of New York City full of meadows to run in, streams to fish in and lakes to swim in.

“Hosting seemed like a simple gift to give a child. We take so many things we have for granted, like riding a bike or learning to swim. We thought if we could touch just one child’s life, that would be our gift to them,” says a Fresh Air host mother from New Hampshire.

The Fresh Air Fund, an independent, not-for-profit agency, has provided free summer experiences to more than 1.7 million New York City children from low-income communities since 1877. As her friends, many have asked us, who is Ellen Scordino?

Ellen is the friend you call in the middle of the night who always answers the phone.  She listens, and then will tell it to you straight, when others pay you lip service.  She’s the one you call because without question, she’s one of the smartest, most dedicated people you know.  Her ability to take your shoebox of problems, analyze them, sort them out, and offer viable solutions is a gift.  She is the first to raise her hand when friends need help, regardless of how well she knows them.  If you invite her, Ellen will come, and she will ring the doorbell with her elbows because her hands are always full.  She has a real relationship with her daughters.  She is dedicated to their education, to their life in this town, and to the future of Hopkinton.  Her parents are hard-working people who taught their daughter great values.  She does all this with laughter and grace, while supporting her family as a working mom, and excelling at her job.  Ellen swims in a sea of efficiency, where most of us just struggle to stay afloat.  We need Ellen.

Ellen gives 150% and her efforts breed success:  award-winning Boston attorney,  award-winning business woman, effective negotiator, team leader, client advocate, skilled scientist, fiscally responsible parent and taxpayer, transparent straight-shooter, respected volunteer, loving mother, and one heck of a great friend.

"All That Jazz"

Hopkinton has talent!   We all know about the talent going on at the schools with the plays, musical performances, sports games, etc., the talent with the ESL actors, talent at the CAA and many other

However, did you know about the talent at the Senior Center?  It’s AMAZING!   There’s a group of women who for the past ten weeks have been working on a “theatrical sampler of live entertainment” under the direction of Dawn Anderson, a member of Hopkinton’s own theater, Enter Stage Left.

Liz Edwards, Yvette Kite, Phyllis Proia and Charmin Wall are the stars of this performance, which is so aptly titled, “SCENIORS, SOFT SHOE AND ALL THAT JAZZ.”    They have been rehearsing every week to get ready for a live show that will be held at the senior center this Friday, May 10 at 1 pm. 

This is a sampler of different types of formats that include drama, monologues, singing and dancing.  Just wait until you see them perform the musical number “ALL THAT JAZZ” from the Broadway show, “CHICAGO.” 

Dawn has been able to direct this program because of a grant from the Foundation for Metrowest, which provides the funding for cultural programs for teens and seniors.   ESL has utilized this grant for after school art and drama programs at the schools and for the seniors, this is their pilot program: Musical Theater. 

Liz said that it has been a lot of fun and it’s “life changing.”  Yvette’s comment was “awesome!”  Phyllis wants to do it again, “encore!” and Charmin said, “It is incredible what Dawn does with us in this short amount of time!”  Dawn said “It’s all about having fun” and she hopes to continue this program with more seniors, more shows!  One other talented person joining this performance is Amanda Maffei, also from ESL, who will be playing the piano. 

So, remember to be at the senior center on Friday, May 10 at 1 pm for this wonderful, free, performance!  This is something I guarantee you will not want to miss!   I can’t wait!

 Hoping for Silver Lining

To the Editor,

Town Meeting voted last night to approve a Municipal Parking lot, before hearing of the many questions and concerns of those left standing at the microphone. The article was presented as if the town had been taking advantage of the owners of the parking lot all these years, and "only" provided snow plowing, sanding and cleaning for shared use of the lot. Snow removal is not cheap as I am sure other owners of large lots in town would agree. The arrangement appears to have been mutually beneficial not one-sided. Now we are on the hook for "somewhere around $25,000 a year" for access to the space, notwithstanding the money it is going to cost to clean, re-pave and re-stripe. The coming expenses will be considerable.

Secondly, no part of the presentation last evening, is the additional outcome of using the lot to fulfill the state's requirement for library expansion parking. If this comes to fruition, and I sincerely hope that it does, it will be absolutely necessary to install an actual walk light at the intersection of Church & Main, something residents, myself included, have lobbied for for years. So maybe there is a silver lining in all of this.
