A Thank You to Town Meeting Dear Editor, We would like to thank Town Meeting for the confidence expressed in the unanimous vote on Article 17, funding a feasibility study to address the constraints at Center School.
Our goal on the Elementary School Building Committee is to develop a solution that will be actively embraced by the community; achieving this will require your continued active involvement. At our upcoming meetings we will focus on developing and publishing a timeline for community engagement, even while we await a formal project selection response from the MSBA. Thanks to your involvement, your confidence expressed at Town Meeting, and to the partnership to date with the Board of Selectmen and School Committee, we find ourselves at a favorable new starting point as we look ahead to identify the best solution for Hopkinton’s youngest students. Whether you have been able to get involved yet or not, we invite you to do so now: please stay informed, connect with us, send questions and feedback, and attend upcoming meetings. Support for Amy Ritterbusch Dear Editor, I am writing in support of Amy Ritterbusch for School Committee. Amy is an effective community activist whose work goes beyond the schools. She proved this at Annual Town meeting when she gained approval for a citizen’s petition that created an approval process for banners over Main Street to promote events like Town Meeting. Amy was praised by several people at Town Meeting because of how well she reached out to multiple town boards and committees to gain their support. She is clearly in touch with the community beyond the “school crowd.” This is not to say that Amy is not keenly aware of the needs of the school district. She is a familiar face in the audience at School Committee and school events. Several times in recent years, Amy has launched petitions or informational campaigns on school issues, providing valuable feedback to the School Committee on parents’ views on issues. She will be able to jump in immediately and get to work on key issues. Amy is an involved community leader with great communication and outreach skills, who understands the issues in Town, who knows how to work her way around town government to make changes, and who will be able to use the relationships she has developed with all segments of our community to represent their interests and to gain their support. I urge you to vote for Amy Ritterbusch for School Committee on May 20th. Rebecca Robak 3 Riverbend Road May 10, 2013 |

HAPPY
MOTHER’S DAY FROM THE FRESH AIR FUND
Mother’s Day
is a special occasion to celebrate the women in our lives who take
the time to care for us. Many women in Central Massachusetts take on
the role of Fresh Air mom, as they open their hearts to New York
City children through The Fresh Air Fund’s Volunteer Host Family
Program. This Mother’s Day, consider sharing the simple joys of
summertime with a Fresh Air child. Each summer, over 4,000 children visit
volunteer host families in rural, suburban and small town
communities across 13 states from Virginia to Maine and Canada.
Families find hosting so rewarding that more than 65 percent of all
Fresh Air children are reinvited to visit the same host families
year after year. Fresh Air children are given the opportunity to
experience a world outside of New York City full of meadows to run
in, streams to fish in and lakes to swim in. “Hosting seemed like a simple gift to give
a child. We take so many things we have for granted, like riding a
bike or learning to swim. We thought if we could touch just one
child’s life, that would be our gift to them,” says a Fresh Air host
mother from New Hampshire. The Fresh Air Fund, an independent,
not-for-profit agency, has provided free summer experiences to more
than 1.7 million New York City children from low-income communities
since 1877. To learn more about hosting a Fresh Air child this
summer, please contact Janet Foley at 1-508-801-4790 or The Fresh
Air Fund at 1-800-367-0003. You can also visit The Fresh Air Fund
online at www.freshair.org. |

Support for Ellen Scordino Editor: As her friends, many have asked us, who is Ellen Scordino? Ellen is the friend you call in the middle of the night who always answers the phone. She listens, and then will tell it to you straight, when others pay you lip service. She’s the one you call because without question, she’s one of the smartest, most dedicated people you know. Her ability to take your shoebox of problems, analyze them, sort them out, and offer viable solutions is a gift. She is the first to raise her hand when friends need help, regardless of how well she knows them. If you invite her, Ellen will come, and she will ring the doorbell with her elbows because her hands are always full. She has a real relationship with her daughters. She is dedicated to their education, to their life in this town, and to the future of Hopkinton. Her parents are hard-working people who taught their daughter great values. She does all this with laughter and grace, while supporting her family as a working mom, and excelling at her job. Ellen swims in a sea of efficiency, where most of us just struggle to stay afloat. We need Ellen. Ellen gives 150% and her efforts breed success: award-winning Boston attorney, award-winning business woman, effective negotiator, team leader, client advocate, skilled scientist, fiscally responsible parent and taxpayer, transparent straight-shooter, respected volunteer, loving mother, and one heck of a great friend. As a community, we have an opportunity to elect one of the best and brightest and be the beneficiaries of her many talents. Please join us in electing Ellen Scordino on May 20th. PARTY TIME Saturday, May 11, 10AM-4PM: Center Trail work party. Volunteers are needed to help with cleanup activities on the Center Trail. The plan is to focus on clearing drainage by removing last winter’s deposit of sticks, logs, and leaves so that the drainageway runs freely. Other activities may include clearing organic matter (leaves, debris) from the trail and brush clearing along the trail. Volunteers should enter from the Loop road, sign a town volunteer waiver, and then a drainage section will be assigned. Please bring gloves, rakes, water and shovels if you have them; there will be some extras. Hope to see you out there! |

"All That Jazz" Senior Center May 10, 2013 1:00 pm
Dawn Anderson, director, Charmin Wall, Yvette Kite, Phyllis Proia and Liz Edwards practicing "All That Jazz"
Nancy L. Drawe (Punky) Hopkinton has talent! We all know about
the talent going on at the schools with the plays, musical
performances, sports games, etc., the talent with the ESL actors,
talent at the CAA and many other However, did you know about the talent at
the Senior Center? It’s AMAZING! There’s a group of women who for
the past ten weeks have been working on a “theatrical sampler of
live entertainment” under the direction of Dawn Anderson, a member
of Hopkinton’s own theater, Enter Stage Left. Liz Edwards, Yvette Kite, Phyllis Proia
and Charmin Wall are the stars of this performance, which is so
aptly titled, “SCENIORS, SOFT SHOE AND ALL THAT JAZZ.” They have
been rehearsing every week to get ready for a live show that will be
held at the senior center this Friday, May 10 at 1 pm. This is a sampler of different types of
formats that include drama, monologues, singing and dancing. Just
wait until you see them perform the musical number “ALL THAT JAZZ”
from the Broadway show, “CHICAGO.” Dawn has been able to direct this program
because of a grant from the Foundation for Metrowest, which provides
the funding for cultural programs for teens and seniors. ESL has
utilized this grant for after school art and drama programs at the
schools and for the seniors, this is their pilot program: Musical
Theater. Liz said that it has been a lot of fun and
it’s “life changing.” Yvette’s comment was “awesome!” Phyllis
wants to do it again, “encore!” and Charmin said, “It is incredible
what Dawn does with us in this short amount of time!” Dawn said
“It’s all about having fun” and she hopes to continue this program
with more seniors, more shows! One other talented person joining
this performance is Amanda Maffei, also from ESL, who will be
playing the piano. So, remember to be at the senior center on
Friday, May 10 at 1 pm for this wonderful, free, performance! This
is something I guarantee you will not want to miss! I can’t wait! That’s it for now, so if you have any
comments or suggestions, you can email me at Punkala@aol.com. Until
next time, have a great week! |

"Run Boston Strong" by Amanda Maffei Incredible studio version Please give a listen so you will recognize it when you see it performed on TV, because this song from Hopkinton people dedicated to Boston is destined for the world. Enjoy it here in stereo with headphones or external speakers. Amanda Maffei wrote the music and lyrics, Barbara Kessler mixed it in her studio, and a large group of musicians joined Amanda, contributing voice, instruments and encouragement. Robert Falcione added HopNews original videos and photos for this Hopkinton-centric labor of love. And please share it on your facebook and other social media. BTW, don't judge the song by its intro. The music builds and builds into a unique and powerful crescendo unto itself. After the video begins, you may switch the quality to HD. (260 views this morning to previous studio version) |

Hoping for Silver Lining To the Editor, Town Meeting voted last night to approve a
Municipal Parking lot, before hearing of the many questions and
concerns of those left standing at the microphone. The article was
presented as if the town had been taking advantage of the owners of
the parking lot all these years, and "only" provided snow plowing,
sanding and cleaning for shared use of the lot. Snow removal is not
cheap as I am sure other owners of large lots in town would agree.
The arrangement appears to have been mutually beneficial not
one-sided. Now we are on the hook for "somewhere around $25,000 a
year" for access to the space, notwithstanding the money it is going
to cost to clean, re-pave and re-stripe. The coming expenses will be
considerable. Anne Mattina, 40 Eastview R oad May 8, 2013 |

Disappointed With Town Meeting Rush to Vote Dear Editor: After sitting through the last two nights of our long town meeting and listening to what each individual had to say I was incredibly disappointed that Article 62 was moved before allowing many interested/impacted residents to speak. However, more concerning to me is that we voted to approve a lease when we were not given the exact terms or cost of the lease. It is astounding that prior to asking this information the town voted to approve this article! How many people would lease a car, building, or simply anything without knowing the associated commitments, risks, and costs? I sincerely hope that citizens will demand that a specific monetary figure and correct information (the parking lot was certainly part of DISC) be provided before approving additional money for the construction of the to be expanded parking lot on the land we now lease. I have absolutely no background in engineering but based on the slope, drainage issues, and other concerns it is apparent that the construction costs will be much greater than the $130,000 that has been granted at town meeting. In future meetings I am also hopeful that none of my fellow citizens would move an article simply to prevent others from addressing their concerns: it is not only rude but in this case it impeded the discussion and discovery of important information. Support for Ellen Scordino Dear Editor, It has been 6 years since either of us
has had a child in the Hopkinton school system, and yet we are
actively working to elect Ellen Scordino to the School
Committee. Ellen is a breath of fresh air – She
is the mother of two young girls, a community and business
volunteer with a long history of giving back, and a partner in
the law firm, Fish & Richardson. In 2012 Ellen received the
prestigious Boston Business Journal’s 40 Under 40 Award. Ellen brings a logical and thoughtful
approach to problem solving, professional leadership and the
ability to think and strategize at a high level, and at the same
time she brings a level of pragmatism and realism, fiscal
restraint and positive energy. This year Hopkinton has the
opportunity to elect someone different from the current
committee – she will enhance their skills and profiles and offer
something that is not just more of the same. On Ellen’s website she says: “I am proud of the history of our town
and the status of our schools in the country. I want to partner
with those focused on the betterment of the Hopkinton school
system going forward. I am committed to bridging the gap between
quality education and cost effective solutions. She is every bit as good as she sounds
and we whole heartedly endorse her! Please vote for Ellen Scordino on
Monday, May 20th. Barbara Berke 10 Gibbon Road Susan Condon 9 Wildlife Road |
