Philip Powers Jr. Deployed to Afghanistan

On April 20, 2013 Philip Powers Jr. of 44 Grove Street, Hopkinton was deployed with the 344^th Military Police Company Army Reserve unit.  A deployment ceremony was held in Hartford, CT and upon departure, the unit traveled to Ft. Bliss, TX for preparedness training until departure in June to Afghanistan.

Philip is a graduate of Hopkinton High School, Class of 2009 and this spring, completed his junior year at Bridgewater State College in Bridgewater, MA where he is studying Criminal Justice.

Joshua Hanna Receives Excellence in Education Award

At the recent 23rd annual Goldin Foundation Educators Forum hosted by the Walpole Public Schools, Joshua Hanna, Teacher and Social Studies Department Head at Natick High School, and Hopkinton native, was recognized for “Excellence in Education.”  Josh joined the group of distinguished educators, who since 1990 have been recognized by the Goldin Foundation for Excellence in Education, for making outstanding contributions in their classrooms, schools and communities.  He shared his experiences, projects, and insights with other teachers, administrators, parents, and members of local communities at the regional forum.

With passion, insight, and creativity, Josh motivates students and creates lessons that make material relevant to the students’ world and experience.  Two of his former students, who nominated him, summarize his impact on them.

Michael Russo states, “The reality of high school is that students label teachers.  Much of the time these labels can be false and misleading, because relations with teachers are personal.  In Joshua Hanna’s case, his title is never questioned.  He is simply ‘the man.’ Mr. Hanna created an environment where motivated students are challenged, yet no one gets left behind.  The environment is one where engaged students could bring new information to the table from the news or their own lives. Mr. Hanna challenged and discussed openly with these students, tying in material from the curriculum.  The students who were more reserved and just wanted to listen still were impacted heavily.  His thought-provoking statements and questions hit everyone in the class.” 

Senior Class Speaker Harsha Amaravedi notes, “We’ve learned skills that we can take everywhere. When I’m out in the world I know I will be able to derive a second degree polynomial and place my semi colons in between independent clauses.  But in all honesty, we have learned invaluable lessons.  Just sit in one class with Mr. Hanna and you feel enlightened.  I mean that guy knows the secrets to life.”

I write to share our support of Ellen Scordino for the open seat on the School Committee.

With young children in Hopkinton’s school system, we have a dedicated interest in selecting the right person for the school committee position. We need a person with foresight who can best fulfill the needs of our community to ensure Hopkinton continues to grow as a top notch school system by the time today’s Center School students reach high school.

On a professional level, Ellen brings years of qualifications to our community. Last year Ellen was voted one of the Top Business Woman in Boston by Boston Business Journal. Our community can benefit from Ellen’s skills as an attorney and her ability to negotiate while asking the right questions. Her aptitude will allow us to diver deeper into issues to help uncover dollars and determine how our budget is best spent. She seeks multiple viewpoints and gets to the bottom of issues quickly.  She is one who will listen to opinions and work to get consensus.  Her attention to detail will ensure things get done in a timely and accurate manner.  She will also promote frank discussion and detailed reports.      

On a personal level, I appreciate Ellen’s blunt honesty and respect for others. Her positions are based on what she can do for the community. Ellen has a vested interest in the betterment of our schools as her young Center School children progress through Center, Elmwood, Hopkins, the middle school and finally high school. Ellen has foresight for the future to ensure Hopkinton remains a strong school system, resulting in strong real estate values.

Hopkinton would be lucky to have Ellen serve on our School Committee.

As proud parents of two children in Hopkinton Public Schools, we will be casting our votes for Ellen Scordino on May 20 and I encourage you to do the same.

HopLax U9 Team White vs. Bellingham

April 30, 2013 — Sunday marked the occasion of the first home game for Hopkinton Lacrosse’s U9 Team White who played against a newly formed team from Bellingham. The game was a tough matchup, with both sides trying to overcome strong defensive play and well-practiced players. Both teams played extremely well, but in the end Hopkinton was victorious with more goals scored by HopLax .  Some of the players who scored included Will Masterson, Wyatt Stevens, Luke Arnold, Aiden Colleary, and Jack Galanek.  These players, as well as their peers, played as if they had been at it for years, even though many picked up their first lacrosse stick only eight months before. This level of play so early in the season is a sign of good things to come for U9.

                Almost half of the U9 White team started playing lacrosse last fall in after school programs run by HopLax coaches at Hopkinton’s Center School.   The young players learned the fundamental Lacrosse skills that they used on Sunday to great effect. This early practice is likely the reason that these players, who are still relatively new to the game, played so well. The boys also displayed incredible teamwork and sportsmanship, more examples of how advanced they are as a unit at an early age.

U9’s next contest will be against Newton on Sunday May 5^th.

Announcement Information for Hopkinton Public Schools

School Bus Transportation Program for the 2013-14 School Year

    Application for Hopkinton Public Schools school bus transportation program for the 2013-2014 school year is now open.

Letters are being mailed to parent(s)/guardian(s) of all students presently enrolled in grades K-11 in Hopkinton schools addressing each student’s eligibility for free or fee-based school bus transportation for the coming 2013-2014 school year.

The cost for a bus pass for the 2013-2014 school year is $190.00 per student with a family cap of $380.00.

This year’s deadline for applications to be received (or postmarked) by the Transportation office is Saturday, June 15, 2013.

After June 15, 2013, the cost for a bus pass increases to $260 with a family cap of $520, and these students will be placed on a waiting list based on the order in which their application and payment were received.
