Endorsement for Amy Ritterbusch

Dear Editor:

By way of this letter, my wife and I are providing our enthusiastic support of Amy Ritterbusch for the School Committee.  We have known Amy for many years through her volunteer work with youth programs in Town.   She is a dedicated, passionate and diligent leader and child-advocate who always has an optimistic attitude.

We believe Amy will be an invaluable addition to the School Committee.   She has been actively involved with public education issues affecting Hopkinton over the years and has consistently kept us and many other families apprised of important proposed changes.  She is not afraid to stand up for what she believes in or is best for our children, yet is always respectful of other people’s opinions.

Amy has outlined thoughtful and sensible goals she would champion during her appointment including protecting the small classroom experience and delivering quality education at a good value.  Amy’s background and extensive experience in communication will also serve to improve and enhance the exchange of important information between the School Committee and our community.  Amy is the best and most qualified candidate for School Committee.

Please join us in voting for Amy Ritterbusch for School Committee on May 20th.  Thank you for your consideration.

April 19, 2013 — Suspect #2 in the Marathon Bombings has been captured in Watertown, Mass after an alert resident who, ironically left his home following the lifting of a shelter-in-place order, saw his boat covering torn and and fresh blood stains against its white color, and then called 911.

A firefight with police ensued and resulted in the capture of 19 year-old Dzhokar Tsarnaev, the brother of Suspect #1, 26 year-old Tamerlan, who was fatally shot last night in a another firefight after the murder of an MIT police officer.

CBSTV 4 showed a photo of the face-up suspect in cuffs following his capture, and has been pre-empting all of its programming since the Boston marathon on Monday.

Around a million people were told to stay in place at work or home today, and authorities shut down transit to prevent suspects from escaping.

But the mood was jubilant thought the metropolitan area following the arrest as people cheered passing police, who answered with their sirens or claxons.

Superintendent of Mass State Police, Timothy Alben, said, "We're exhausted, but we have a victory."

"It's a night we're all going to rest easy," said Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick.

US Attorney Carmen Ortiz admitted that the suspect did not receive his Miranda rights, a warning usually given upon arrest to advise people that they don't have to speak. She said that authorities do not have to do that in the case of national security.

Boston Police Commissioner Ed Davis said that after watching video of the bombings for hours, he was very proud of the heroic way his force responded.

"It makes me proud to be a part of this team," he said.

Edward Deveau, Watertown Chief of Police, summed up the conclusion by saying, "We asked you to remain vigilante and you did."

To the Residents of Hopkinton:

As the magnitude of the events at the Boston Marathon Finish Line on Monday April 15, 2013 continues to unfold, I wanted to express a few thoughts and share some important information.

First and foremost, on behalf of the entire Board of Selectmen, our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and families of the cowardly and despicable act that took place on Monday afternoon.  Our admiration goes out to the first responders and ordinary citizens who reacted to this event and performed so well under such horrific conditions.  We look forward to the identification and apprehension of the person, or persons, responsible.

You should know that once we became aware of the event at the Finish Line in Boston, your public safety officials were in contact with the FBI, Boston Fusion Center and the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) about this event and have been working collaboratively with them to determine if there are any connections to Hopkinton.  At this time, there do not appear to be any concerns related to our town.  As you know, the investigation is ongoing and dynamic. We will continue to work with assigned investigators and, should the need arise, inform the residents of any relevant information.

The events on Monday are surely going to have wide reaching implications. When the after action reports begin to be disseminated there are sure to be recommendations for moving forward.  We will continue to work closely with the BAA in all respects to ensure the future safety of the Marathon.

The FBI continues to request that anyone who may have seen anything suspicious on Monday, who may have any information about anyone who may have made threats against the Marathon, who may have heard explosions in remote areas or may have video or photographic images of the finish line area please contact them.  The number is 1-800-494-TIPS.

Finally, I want to thank the members of our community who have organized and attended the two vigils on the Town Common this week as all of Massachusetts mourns our collective loss.  In the face of such evil, it is important for all of us to remember that perpetrators of such tragedies can only achieve their goals if we allow their acts to pull us apart in fear and suspicion, rather than bring us closer as a community and a nation.

Sincerely,

Benjamin L. Palleiko, Chair

Board of Selectmen

A Time to be Healed

Pastor Rob Davis of the Vineyard Church of Hopkinton has the hands of Pastor Emeritus Richard Germaine laid on him, and is flanked on his right by  Associate Pastor Sean Bowen of his church and behind him by Pastor Mike Laurence of the Faith Community Church.

April 17, 2013 — Pastor Rob Davis (center in yellow) of the Vineyard Church of Hopkinton organized a prayer meeting, and was joined by pastors and parishioners from other churches as well as 150 attendees this afternoon on the Hopkinton Common.
The mood was still and somber as each pastor offered their words to God in asking for His guidance and healing. Although Pastor Rob said he slept better last night following a sleepless Marathon night, where he witnessed the second blast, and had body parts land at his feet, others in the crowd were still visibly upset by what transpired on Monday in Boston.
