Occupants Wearing Seatbelts Escape Death in High Speed Rollover on Pike in Hopkinton

April 12, 2013 — Yesterday, at 2:50 p.m., troopers from the State Police Barracks in Weston received numerous calls for a motor vehicle crash on Route 90 westbound in Hopkinton. The 911 callers reported that it was a single vehicle that rolled over numerous times. On arrival troopers found a 2001 Jeep Cherokee that had come rest on its passenger side in the far left lane. Westborough and Southborough EMS were requested to the scene for injuries to both the operator and his passenger.

The operator, Nicholas Casey, 53, of Marblehead was transported to U-Mass Medical Center with incapacitating but non-fatal injuries. The passenger, Kimberly O’Connor, 41, of Geneva, Illinois was also transported with non-fatal injuries. The cause of the crash is under investigation and it appears both occupants were wearing their seatbelts but motor vehicle charges are not being ruled out.

Several lanes were taken to allow for rendering medical assistance and clean up by Massachusetts Department of Transportation. The road was completely clear in just under an hour. Traffic was backed up for close to five miles before the crash site was cleared.

Scholars and Stars at Elmwood School

April 11, 2013 — Above, Elmwood School Principal David Ljungberg addresses the 600 or so (Click on right thumbnail to enlarge) second and third grade students this morning who gathered in the gymnasium to welcome — the world is "Jambo" in their native Swahili — nine elite, world class Kenyan athletes who will be running Monday in the Boston Marathon.
Prior to the assembly,  the athletes met with students in Mr. Keane's class to exchange answers and questions about the similarities and differences between the American and Kenyan culture and climate. And in the weeks leading up to today's event, according to Mr. Llungberg, students learned about the music and culture of Kenya, the people and the animals that live on the African continent. Today, they proudly displayed artwork they created (Click on left thumbnail to enlarge) from what they learned and showed the displayed pieces to their guests.

Below, 2012 Kenyan champion Wesley Korir dances into the gymnasium to the raucous adulation of the students and a blaring sound system pumping up the crowd. Please check back later for a video of some of the event.

NORAD to conduct exercise flights over southern Massachusetts

PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. – North American Aerospace Defense Command will conduct exercise flights today as they practice intercept and identification procedures. The exercise will take place over southern Massachusetts.  Although they are scheduled for the morning, the flights could be delayed due to weather concerns.

The flights are scheduled to take place in the area between Providence, R.I. and Plymouth, Mass. People in this area may hear and/or see NORAD-controlled fighter jets in close proximity to a military or military contracted aircraft, which will be taking on the role of aircraft of interest.

In order to test responses, systems and equipment, NORAD continuously conducts exercises with a variety of scenarios, including airspace restriction violations, hijackings and responding to unknown aircraft. All NORAD exercises are carefully planned and closely controlled.

NORAD has conducted exercise flights of this nature throughout Canada and the U.S. since the start of Operation Noble Eagle, the command’s response to the terrorist attacks that occurred on Sept. 11, 2001.

NORAD is the bi-national Canadian and American command that provides maritime warning, aerospace warning and aerospace control for Canada and the United States. The command has three subordinate regional headquarters: the Alaskan NORAD Region at Elmendorf Air Force Base, Alaska; the Canadian NORAD Region at Canadian Forces Base Winnipeg, Manitoba; and the Continental NORAD Region at Tyndall Air Force Base, Fla.

Highest Honors

Caroline F. Sullivan, a Grade 9 student of Phillips Exeter Academy, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Sean M. Sullivan, earned Highest Honors for the winter 2013 term.

Two School Committee Candidates' Statements

Amy Ritterbusch

My name is Amy Ritterbusch and I am running for the one open seat on our School Committee this year. I have lived in Hopkinton for nine years and like most residents I am a supporter of high quality public education in our town. My husband, Tim, and I have three children (Grades 7, 5 and 2) in the Hopkinton Public Schools. I have a BA from UMass Amherst. In addition to my many volunteer roles in town, I have a freelance web design business.  I have been attending School Committee meetings and actively participating in our town budget process for several years and I feel that now is the right time for me to step up and take on a larger role. My strong communications background, technical skills and detail-oriented nature will be an asset to the School Committee.

Over the years I have volunteered in a variety of capacities in Hopkinton:

·         Hopkinton Parent Teacher Association (HPTA): Communications Chair, Extracurricular Registration Coordinator, Assistant Treasurer, The Runner Blog Editor, Webmaster and Source Book Coordinator

·         Hopkins School Council: Parent Representative

·         Hopkinton Public Schools Strategic Planning Committee

·         Educate Hopkinton Civic League: President, Steering Committee Member and Webmaster

·         Cub Scout Pack 26: Den Leader, Webmaster

·         Girl Scout Troop 65040: Troop Leader

·         Boy Scout Troop 1: Troop Committee Member

·         MOMS Club: Newsletter Editor, Activities Chair

My goals on the School Committee will be improved communication, protecting the classroom experience and delivering quality education at a good value to the community. As I have been watching the School Committee over the years, when I learn about an issue that I think is important, I have worked hard to bring that issue to the attention of other parents and the media. I have been actively involved with several petitions advocating for small class sizes. I was instrumental in spreading the word about the proposed school year calendar changes for 2013-14. As a School Committee member I will advocate for the Strategic Plan update, the budget and all policies up for review to be well communicated to the public before being finalized. Drawing on my experience as HPTA Communications Chair, I have many ideas for how the School Committee can better and more consistently communicate with the public.

I know the School Committee is an actively involved committee that puts in many long hours for our town. I am up to the task and will be dedicated to the role. I will work hard to find the right balance between maintaining the level of services the town expects, yet seeking out efficiencies and cost savings that do not negatively impact the classroom experience. I will bring to the table my extensive communications background, attention to detail and dedication as a community volunteer. I respectfully ask for your vote on Monday, May 20.

amyritterbusch@educatehopkinton.com

Ellen Scordino

I am pleased to announce my candidacy to the Hopkinton School Committee.  As a working parent of two young children, I am committed to balancing the continued improvement to our schools, with the cost of educating our young to the taxpayers.

My decision to run stems from my wish to serve taxpayers, students, parents, teachers and administrators, by bringing a fresh perspective to our School Committee.

Taxpayers need a School Committee that they trust.  I intend to earn that trust by respecting budget limitations and not taking hard-earned tax dollars for granted.  I will peel the curtain back, seek answers to difficult questions, share information and spend your money wisely.

Children and parents need a School Committee that works both with and for them.  To this end, I intend to be accessible.  I will keenly listen, and share information, as I work hard to continuously improve our schools.  I will strive to give our children access to cutting edge technique, qualified instruction, outside opportunities, and up-to-date tools and facilities.

Our quality teachers are integral to the learning process.  I will work to make Hopkinton a system where not only the best teachers strive to work, but also to create a place where our teachers feel supported and invested.  Similarly, I intend to work to retain our administrators by digging deep into the issues of recent turnover and creating an environment where the best are invested, and want to stay.

I am proud of the history of our town and the status of our schools in the country.   I want to partner with those focused on the betterment of the Hopkinton school system going forward. I am committed to bridging the gap between quality education and cost effective solutions to the hardworking taxpayers of Hopkinton.

I respectfully ask for your vote.

Coolidge Approval Appealed

April 9, 2013 — The approval by the Planning Board of a 12-home Open Space Landscape Preservation Development brought before them by property owners John Coolidge and Anne Richards on March 11, 2013, has been appealed by neighbors Michael and Margaret Bower, representing themselves, whose peaceful existence would be marred by the opening of a fire road to Upton State Forest, and a parking area for those who might want to visit it. The road is currently blocked by a tree apparently pulled down to prevent vehicular entrance. In addition, two new homes would be overlooking their property, according to the drawing above.

The plaintiffs are representing themselves, naming as defendants in Land Court all of the members of the Planning Board as well as John Coolidge and Anne Richards.

In their complaint, the Bowers allege that the Application Special Permit criteria and development standards  in three separate bylaws, is "...Legally untenable and in excess of the Planning Board's authority."

The complaint further alleges, "The Decision is the product of procedures that were not in conformance with the Zoning By-Laws and other applicable law."

The summary of the complaint alleges that the Planning Board granted a cluster development that provided more open space designed to protect neighbors, and then granted relief to the applicant that would circumvent the intent of the law protecting neighbors from encroachment. The complaint alleges that the board allowed a reduction of the buffer zone for open space from 100' to 50', placing the aforementioned road and parking lot within that zone.

Land Court cases can take several months to a year to be heard, but Mr. Coolidge and his wife want to cash out now, move away and retire, according to Mr. Coolidge's public discussions with the Planning Board, on which he served as Chairman for several years. In another irony, Mr. Coolidge currently serves on the Town board, Community Preservation Committee, that approves previously collected tax money to purchase land, as well as other uses.

The Coolidge/Richards property is listed on the assessor's website at $460,796. However, the approved permits make a property more valuable in an appraisal, costing the town more if it does move forward with Mr. Coolidge's plea for the town to purchase it.

Below is the Bower home and the road off of Pond Street where the parking lot will be a few feet in if the appeal fails, and the development proceeds.

Support for Amy Ritterbusch

    Letter to the Editor:

My name is Amy Mick and my husband Troy and I are writing in support of Amy Ritterbusch for School Committee.  I have been fortunate to work with Amy in several different volunteer roles within the HPTA, and what always comes through is Amy’s dedication to the schools.  Between the time she spends attending school committee meetings, and researching areas of interest and/or concern we are  confident that she would be able to transition seamlessly into the role, and know that she is aware and comfortable with the enormous time commitment School Committee Members need to volunteer.

Amy has a strong background, both professionally and in her many volunteer roles, in communications.  With the many challenges and projects that the School Committee deals with on an annual basis it would be a huge asset to have someone with Amy’s communication background to help keep the community abreast of the issues that the School Committee is working on, opportunities for the community to weigh in and progress being made.

Amy and her husband Tim have been in Hopkinton for nine years, and in that time they have both volunteered their time to help the community, especially the kids in town, whether it be the schools, scouting or youth athletics.  Their children are spread throughout our great schools, and Amy is familiar with the different challenges that face our children in the different schools. She will be ready to immediately jump in and make an impact, and help improve the communication to the community.

We would encourage you to take the time to speak to Amy and learn more about why she wants to get involved.  And then we hope you will join us in voting for Amy Ritterbusch for School Committee.

Respectfully,

Amy and Troy Mick
