Hopkinton High School Principal Forum![]() April 4, 2013 — Michael Cournoyer, Principal of Holliston High School, made a bid to come back to work in his hometown this evening as Hopkinton High School Principal, presenting his case to the public, the School Committee, teachers, department heads, incoming Superintendent Cathy McLeod, Assistant Superintendent Dr. Mary Ann DeMello, and the one who counts the most, Interim Superintendent Dr. Stephen Hiersche, who will make the final decision after assessing input from this evening's forum. Mr. Cournoyer was one of two candidates to make the final cut for the open position of Hopkinton High School Principal. The other candidate, Westborough Principal John Smith, withdrew from consideration after being offered a job in another district.
Early in his college studies, Mr. Cournoyer said he switched majors after teaching in a classroom. "I knew education was where I wanted to be," he said in his introductory remarks He also said his time in Hopkinton were the best five years of his career. Following Mr. Cournoyer's introductory remarks, Ron Foisy (photo) noted that neither Hopkinton nor Holliston were in the top 25 for SAT scores. Mr. Cournoyer said that SATs were an important measure, and that to bring those scores up would require a focus. He said that teachers and students need to collaborate to establish deep understanding, rigorous real-life learning experiences and a deep understanding of vision in a broader sense, one where there is a tremendous number of vigorous lessons both in mainstream and in special education. "There is a tremendous faculty in Hopkinton. It is a student-centered environment and I'd like to lead them. "The approach is the same for special education, to make sure they have the same opportunities," he said. One resident, who said she moved from Holliston to Hopkinton said that she has attended a hundred sporting events and finds the student body of Holliston to be disrespectful, and wondered why that has continued under Mr. Cournoyer's leadership. Mr. Cournoyer admitted to it being a great concern, apologized to the parent for her bad experiences, and said that a new Athletic Director has moved things in the right direction. "Where we have heard inappropriate comments, we have taken it very seriously," he said. One audience member was already sold. "I have a senior and a fourth grade boy," she said, speaking from her seat in the Hopkinton High School Auditorium. "Do you plan on being here when he gets here [HHS]?" she asked, apparently alluding to the high rate of turnover of Hopkinton Public Schools administrators. "My wife and I are building a home 300 yards from here. I love Hopkinton," said Mr. Cournoyer, the father of a 4 year-old girl. The process moving forward was unclear. What is known is that it is Interim Superintendent Dr. Hiersche's decision, which he said he will make after consulting with others, and after seeing the community feedback sheets that were turned in by attendees. He could hire, not hire, or start a process anew. |

Library Grant Expected by 2015 Mill Creek presents to Selectmen Selectmen still opposed to Milford Casino ![]() Above, Hopkinton Marathon Committee Chair Dorothy Ferriter-Wallace introduced Norm Harkins of the New England Community Advisory Board of the United States Army who gave a painting to the Town of Hopkinton, a gift which was accepted by the selectmen this evening. April 2, 2013 — State Senator Karen
Spilka and State Representative Carolyn Dykema stopped by to
update Selectmen on how the state is handling things Senator Spilka said the state is continuing to make reforms. Rep. Dykema said that Mass Health has made significant changes in technology, modernizing their workforce and cutting fraud. But Selectman Chair Ben Palleiko was concerned about the progress of casino applications, and especially the one in Milford. Rep. Dykema has written to the Gaming Commission to urge them to force the casino applicants to meet in the communities surrounding a host community. Senator Spilka said they shot that down.
“We’re extremely opposed [to a casino]," stated Chairman Palleiko,
speaking on behalf of the Board of Selectmen. He added that
Foxwoods, which is
Senator Spilka said she expected the library grant to be approved following a positive vote by Town Meeting in 2014. In another action, the Selectmen heard from Mill Creek Residential Trust, which with land owner Paul Mastroianni, wants the town’s blessing for the construction of 280 apartments on the property off of Lumber Street. Although the Planning Board has approved the concept plan for the development, with a housing development of this magnitude, the town’s executive officers, the Board of Selectmen, must enter into a Host Community Agreement [HCA] that requires mitigation for putting additional students into the school system and traffic onto the streets. The developer and the Town of Hopkinton are negotiating an HCA that they hope to bring to Town Meeting for approval in the form of an Article.

Back Again![]() April 2, 2013 — This Canada geese couple has come home to roost again (we can assume it is the same one) this spring. Each year a goose couple — they mate for life — returns to build a nest and lay eggs. The female will sit on her eggs, while the male distracts possible predators by keeping his distance. On occasion, the male will incubate while the female bathes. Hopefully, HopNews will bring the pictorial story to readers again. They were on the island apparently building a nest shortly before this photo was taken. |

Elementary School Building Committee Editor: Last Thursday
evening, I had the pleasure of attending the Elementary School
Building Committee’s (ESBC) meeting. Given the importance of the
Center School project I was hoping to gain an early sense of the
ESBC’s dynamic, approach and direction.
The meeting I attended was the committee’s
third. What I observed was: a strong team, strong leadership,
independence, process-orientation, transparency, and
inclusion. This team is composed of dedicated professionals, public
servants, and community members who each bring passion and
experience to the table. Joe Markey and Mike Shepard bring a
disciplined approach to leading this committee that should create
tremendous public confidence. The ESBC has taken clear actions to
create some separation and independence from School Committee,
Administration, and “MSBC process”. The ESBC seems poised to focus
on their organizational charter (K-1), re-validation of all
assumptions, execution of proper due diligence, and development of
processes for decision making and project management. The ESBC has
committed to frequent and candid communications to everyone in
Hopkinton. Finally, the ESBC committed to an inclusive
approach. Evidence of this inclusive approach was the Chair of the
ESBC inviting me to share my input on the Elmwood SOI, in an
impromptu manner, prior to the committee’s vote.
It is this community member’s opinion that
the ESBC is off to a great start. I thank them for their service
and commitment and look forward to their rapid progress on an
appropriate and fiscally responsible solution to the current
challenges of the Center School.
