Decades-Long Hunt for Fugitive Rapist is Over

March 28, 2013 — Massachusetts State Police last night arrested one of their Most Wanted fugitives, a convicted rapist who had been on the run since 1978 and was found living under an assumed name in Gorham, Maine. The decades-long manhunt ended shortly after 9 p.m.

GARY ALLEN IRVING, who is now in his 50s, was taken into custody at his home at 9:15 p.m. The arrest was made by the Massachusetts State Police Violent Fugitive Apprehension Section with the assistance of Maine State Police and Gorham, Maine town police.

Information developed in recent days led MSP troopers to Maine.

Suspect GARY ALLEN IRVING was living under the name Gregg Irving in Maine.

Mass. State Police, Maine State Police, Gorham, Me., Police, and FBI agents have recovered numerous hand guns and long guns from his home. He did not possess the guns legally and will be charged federally for the firearms offenses.

Troopers, officers, and agents remain at IRVING's home on South Street in Gorham, which they are processing for additional evidence.

The defendant will be held overnight and arraigned as a fugitive from justice in a Maine courtroom Thursday. The process to rendite him to Massachusetts will begin tomorrow as well.

State Police investigators are still processing the scene.

IRVING was convicted of three Norfolk County rapes in 1978 but the start of his sentence was stayed by a judge. IRVING fled during the stay of sentence.

Massachusetts State Police put IRVING on the Top Ten Most Wanted list years ago and have been actively seeking him for decades.

The investigation by the Violent Fugitive Apprehension Section was aided by the State Police Detective Unit assigned to the Norfolk District Attorney's office.

See Wanted Poster.

Downtown Denizen

March 27, 2013 — This handsome turkey vulture and a few of its friends took over the Downtown skies this afternoon, hardly flapping a wing in the process. This type of bird enjoys finding thermals, rising currents of air, and gliding in them. The birds have been known to roost in the cemetery across from the Hopkinton Common.

BOSTON – Wednesday, March 27, 2013 – Governor Deval Patrick today met with the Ambassador of Turkey to the United States Namik Tan and the newly appointed Consul General of Turkey Burak Kararti, in the State House as part of an ongoing effort to strengthen the relationship between Massachusetts and Turkey.

In April 2012, the Governor met with Ali Babacan, Deputy Prime Minister of Turkey and then met with Nihat Ergün, Minster of Science, Industry and Technology for Turkey, at the BIO International Convention in June 2012.

Last year, Turkey was Massachusetts’ 23rd largest export partner and 43rd largest import partner. The 2010 U.S. Census estimates there are 4,700 Turkish-born residents in the Commonwealth. Between 2002 and 2008, Turkey’s annual GDP growth rate was 6.8 percent, making it one of the fasting growing markets in the world.

Pediatric Dentist Indicted on Child Pornography Related Charges

FRAMINGHAM – March 27,2013 — A pediatric dentist with an office in Framingham was indicted on charges of distribution and possession of child pornography for certain images and emails allegedly found on his laptop computer, Middlesex District Attorney Gerry Leone informed the public today.

Melvin A. Ehrlich, 52, of Millis, was indicted today by a Middlesex Grand Jury on charges of distribution of child pornography (two counts) and possession of child pornography (three counts).

The defendant will be arraigned April 11 in Middlesex Superior Court.

According to authorities, on March 27, 2012, Ehrlich sent his personal laptop computer to a service provider for maintenance work to remove a reported virus from the computer.  While working on Ehrlich’s laptop, the service provider observed downloaded images of child pornography.  The service provider called the Framingham Police, who immediately launched an investigation.

An extensive forensic investigation was conducted and revealed that Ehrlich used this laptop computer under various user names to download and distribute commercially traded child pornography images.  The data recovered was sent to and confirmed to be commercially traded child pornography by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

At the time, Ehrlich, a pediatric dentist, was operating a business called Framingham Pediatric Dentistry.   There is currently no evidence that presently leads law enforcement to believe that Ehrlich physically abused any children or manufactured any images of child pornography.  It is alleged that, in addition to downloading images of child pornography onto his laptop computer, the defendant sent emails containing child pornography images to others from his dental practice.

The defendant was arraigned December 27, 2012 in Framingham District Court on charges of distribution of child pornography (two counts) and possession of child pornography (three counts).  Framingham District Court Judge Robert Greco released the defendant on $10,000 cash bail with conditions to commit no new crimes and not to use a computer except at his place of business for work-related purposes only.

These charges are allegations and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty.

The case is being investigated by the Framingham Police Department.

The prosecutor assigned to the case is Assistant District Attorney Jennifer Snook, working with the Middlesex District Attorney's Office Child Abuse Unit.

Hoyt Statue in Place

March 26, 2013 — A workman jockeys a fence into place while awaiting the Hoyt statue to arrive and be put on its granite perch in front of Center School to await its official unveiling on April 8, 2013. Texas sculptor Michael Tabor and his wife accompanied the completed work to Hopkinton, and Mr. Tabor, apparently surprised that the press had been alerted, was not totally prepared to keep it from view, although it was secured in a plywood enclosure.

Editor's note: When workmen removed the plywood to blanket the statue with cloth to keep it from view, people got a glimpse of the work from the front, and shutters began to click. HopNews got a fine photo, but an editorial decision was made to maintain the dignity of the piece and not present it as if its subjects were in a coffin.
