Bogota, Colombia – February 20, 2013 – As part of the Massachusetts-Colombia Innovation Partnership Mission, Governor Deval Patrick and President of the Republic of Colombia Juan Manuel Santos yesterday signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to formalize collaboration between Massachusetts and Colombia in the areas of science, technology and innovation, including in the life sciences, technology and clean energy industries.

“Massachusetts is a leader in the life sciences, clean energy and other innovation economy sectors,” said Governor Patrick. “In order to maintain that edge, we must position ourselves for success in growing markets, like Colombia, to drive job growth and catalyze international investment.”

“I am aware of how important the innovation ecosystem, technology, research are to Massachusetts and they are also important to Colombia. The state of Massachusetts has a lot to offer to Colombia and Colombia has much to offer to the United States and the state of Massachusetts,” said President Juan Manuel Santos Calderon at the MOU signing ceremony, thanking Governor Patrick for his visit.

Last year, the United States signed a free trade agreement with Colombia, opening up an estimated $1.1 billion market for U.S. exports. Colombia has a thriving innovation, life sciences and clean energy economy, and this MOU will strengthen the Commonwealth’s partnership with Colombia and help create collaboration that will spur job creation in Massachusetts.

“As our innovation economy grows, companies based in Massachusetts will look around the world for new avenues for partnership and progress,” said Secretary of Housing and Economic Development Greg Bialecki. “This Memorandum of Understanding will create new opportunities for Massachusetts and Colombia and highlights the common links between our economies.”

Rep. Joseph P. Kennedy III Returns to Hopkinton to Speak and Listen

Above, Rep. Kennedy is greeted by fourth grade student Amelia Bashy. To her right are, respectively, David Wang and Zack Best.

February 19, 2013 — United States Representative Joseph P. Kennedy III of the Fourth Congressional District of Massachusetts stopped by Water Fresh Farm on Hayden Rowe Street this morning at the invitation of State Senator Karen Spilka and the Hopkinton Chamber of Commerce. Representative Kennedy warned about a lack of compromise in Washington, but held Hopkinton up as a standard for other communities to follow.

"If we don't come together and compromise, you're going to see some big cuts in just a couple of weeks," he warned.

He said the challenge was, "...finding those individuals who want to work together."

"This community [Hopkinton] ends up having a thriving business. You've developed a wonderful place to live and work," he said.

"How do you get the power of the greater Boston area, and from Hopkinton, and get it to work for the rust belt... areas that have been hurt disproportionately with the manufacturing base going overseas; and what can we do to strengthen those communities going forward?

"Issues will change, but if you're able to ask questions, to listen, then that trust that builds up will transcend the issues of the day.

"I want you to think of me and this office as a resource for you," Rep.  Kennedy said.

During a Q&A following Rep. Kennedy's introduction, Greyhound Friends' Louise Coleman, who said she is on the Sherborn Democratic Town Committee, asked about what the US is doing to prevent the threat of nuclear war.

Representative Kennedy replied that the president is trying to limit the number of warheads, but that the threat from North Korea, Pakistan, and now Iran obtaining nuclear weapons, is greater than the former Soviet Union.

"Pakistan has the fastest growing nuclear arsenal in the world," he said.

Answering a question from Margo Roman, Rep. Kennedy agreed that healthy eating could keep the cost of health care down and possibly be a boon for sustainable farming and organic agriculture.

This year’s PJB marathon team is made up of three Hopkinton runners, Ann-Michele Dragsbaek, Kyle Kelley and Jeanne Vumbaca and we have chosen to run in support of group of the some of the most dedicated people out there,

Project Just Because is a Hopkinton-based charitable organization that helps more people in need from more than 30 area towns in a variety of very personal ways. They supply adults and children with a variety of support by acting as a resource for items that families need (clothing, toiletries, gift baskets, career items, school supplies, blankets, toys, furniture, baby items, housewares) and creating an element of hope for a brighter tomorrow by educating families that want to help people but don’t know how. They also act as a food pantry for the town of Hopkinton. Project Just Because has amazingly low admin costs and therefore 97% of the money they raise goes direction to helping people.

Their approach to helping people is so refreshingly caring, infectious and personal that it is an honor for us runners to be associated with them. If you would like to know more about Project Just Because, please follow the link to their website: http://projectjustbecause.org/

Please help us in supporting this wonderful group of people.

Fundraising for Best Buddies

by Brooke McMullen

This year I will be fundraising and training for the 2013 Boston Marathon in support of Best Buddies Massachusetts. Best Buddies is a non-profit organization that provides social and employment opportunities to people with intellectual and developmental disabilities throughout Massachusetts. Best Buddies allows special education students and regular education students opportunities to interact in a non-academic setting at middle school, high school and college chapters. My goal is to raise $6,000 by April 15th to support Best Buddies, and I'm well on my way but need your support to get me to the finish line.
My involvement with Best Buddies began in 2009, when I was a freshman student at Hopkinton High School. I became the Secretary for the Best Buddies chapter, and mentored for two students that have intellectual and developmental disabilities. My time with these girls was spent taking a rape defense course called RAD. I encouraged the students to be strong and gain empowerment through self defense. I have continued my passion for Best Buddies by joining the chapter at The University of New Hampshire.
I hope you’ll consider supporting my efforts to make Massachusetts more inclusive for people of all abilities, one stride at a time! Thank you so much for your support and encouragement.

If you would like to make an online donation please visit www.teambestbuddiesboston.org  and select “Donate”, “Make a Gift” then select my name from the list. As an added bonus, you’ll be officially added to my support team with a complimentary tee shirt for all donations over $50.
