Roll-over Causes Temporary Road Closure

February 13,  2013 — Main Street was closed temporarily last night after a Prius cut a telephone pole in half leaving it dangling and wires from home services dropping at chest height across the road (Below). Above, Sgt. Porter inventories bottles of beer that he removed from the vehicle. The driver, Patrick J Healy, 28, of Independence Way, Franklin, MA, was arrested by Officer Aaron O'Neil and charged with a Marked Lanes Violation, OUI Liquor and Reckless Operation of a Motor Vehicle.

Thoughts and Thank Yous

February 12, 2013 — To begin, can we all agree that the Town of Hopkinton, its DPW and private contractors, did an outstanding job regarding the Blizzard of 2013? Kudos to all of them for getting it all together like clockwork.
Thank you to Governor Deval Patrick for calling the travel ban when he did. What a wise move to get the cars off of the road before the worst of the blizzard, and keep them off until most of the roads were cleared. The Blizzard of 1978 was a good teacher. Photos of hundreds of vehicles stranded on Route 9 and elsewhere reminded everyone of what poor planning looks like. I'd give the Governor First Prize for a job well done.

A huge shout out to the HopNews readers who sent in some of the most creative photos we've ever received from readers, as well as photos of some great creations.

Thanks to the over 500 readers who visited the HopCam webcam that points out of the office plate glass window and onto the street and sidewalk (Top right of page). They were interested in seeing traffic and snowfall and snow removal.

The Blizzard of 2013 kept most people indoors, including this writer, who saw more television than he usually does. And so it might be good to note that pigs do not fly coach, and boxes do not talk. I do not believe in those things and do not find them remotely funny, especially when HopNews has a great sponsor in Phipps Insurance. They are an excellent provider of insurance, proficient in every aspect and geared to individual and custom service.

If you have a thought to share, letters to the Editor are welcome. Editor@HopNews.com

See Jill Dwyer's awesome Nemo by clicking on the left thumbnail. Then choose to see Kristen Usher's twin two year old girls, Annabel (left) and Laurel (right) enjoying their snow thrones. The third from left is a couple of feathery friends of Bob Richards. The fourth is the expansion of the Zettek Igloo that we got a photo of before the storm. We believe young Matthew was a big help to his Dad.

Planning Board Approves Hunters Ridge

February 12, 2013 —Tucked into the southern corner of Hopkinton on the Holliston line next to some Town owned land and near their successful Connelly Hills Estates, Ron Nation and son, Chris, brought a revised plan for Hunter's Ridge development in a Public Hearing before the Planning Board and the public with no major objections, and unanimous approval from the board.
The Open Space Landscape Preservation Development offers open space and trails connecting with other trails off site, as well as to trails on town land in a tight knit grouping of 19 new homes.

Since the start of the Public Hearing two weeks ago when neighbors came out in force, some with concerns about water and drainage, and others who just didn't want their sleepy road disturbed, the Nations hosted a site-walk and answered most objections with qualified experts.

Last evening, a neighbor worried that blasting could affect his bedrock well, even though it is uphill from the development. Mr. Nation assured him that he has no plans for blasting in the area, and if he did, it would be minimal.

In addition, Mr. Nation said he would shim South Mill Street in front of two existing homes to stop water pooling in the roadway and help those neighbors.

Another Perspective

February 11, 2013 — Here is a frontal view from this morning of a spirited Bill Breckenridge and friends' creation from yesterday. A 6' tall man's head would be the same height as Nemo's eyes. (See photo, below) In last night's photo, we asked onlookers to stand behind the camera while we too a photo of Nemo and the crew. This morning, there were about a half-dozen young people looking at the creation from the parking lot. The brilliant yellow of last night is giving way to more of a pink hue.

Before and After

In the HopCam webcam image captured below at 11:30 pm last night, the sidewalk plow is blowing snow off of the sidewalk to be loaded onto DPW and contractor trucks (off-camera, and in passing) for transfer to the snow dump on Cedar Street. To see the 5:00 am view from today, sidewalks, parking spaces and all, mouse-over the image. Kudos to all involved. The HopNews webcam has had a record 517 views since the start of the storm.

Nemo in Hopkinton

February 10, 2013 —We hope Disney doesn't come down too hard on Billy Breckenridge for copyright infringement for building, as promised earlier today, a gigantic Nemo-type of snow fish on Ice House Pond, using water, snow, ice and food coloring. The area was lit this evening as it is for skaters, and drew quite a crowd of parents and kids. For those visiting, please  use caution and pull in slowly, because there have been many children running around and vehicles coming and going constantly. (And just to be safe, let's call it Memo).

February 10, 2013 — All of the snow from the street on Main Street had to go somewhere, and onto the sidewalk and into the parking spaces it went on top of the snow Mother Nature already laid down. After the Storm
Baby delivered in Worcester, more...

February 9, 2013 — Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick credited "spot-on" weather forecasting and detailed emergency preparations with a storm event that was without widespread catastrophe, with the exception of homes along the shoreline of the ocean. And even in homes where the ocean intruded, or a porch collapsed into the waves, there were no injuries reported. In one unrelated incident, a group of people who were using a vehicle to keep warm were rescued when snow covered their tailpipe, forcing poisonous carbon monoxide gases into the passenger cabin. They were rushed to a nearby hospital. UPDATE: Two people died from carbon monoxide poisoning separate incidents when they sat in their cars to keep warm during shoveling, but their tailpipes were blocked by snow.

In Worcester, the Governor said, where some National Guard were deployed with their specialized equipment, in one case a medic-Humvee equipped to traverse the Worcester hills, they joined local emergency personnel in delivering a baby at 3:00 am.

And although the Governor has lifted the travel ban for the entire state beginning at 4:00 pm, he has asked that people use caution at intersections, where snow banks can create a hazardous condition due to limited visibility.

In addition, he urged people to be extra cautious of pedestrians, who will be walking in the street because of unplowed sidewalks.

Those readers who like HopNews on facebook and/or follow HopNews on Twitter got alerted of the major developments during this event, as per usual. Sign up to get yours.
