Once the pipe is filled with water, as it drops on the left side of the dam, a negative pressure behind it causes more water to get sucked in and continue to turn the turbine, much like a siphon hose. Unlike electricity generated by solar power, Mr. Boyce said he is not allowed to sell the excess back to the grid. |

Two officers responded with the Fire Department and subsequently arrested a 47 year old male from Upton and charged him with Failure to Drive In Right Lane and OUI Liquor. 6:18 pm A walk-in reported a domestic situation. Officer Peter Booth spoke with all the individuals involved and summonsed one person into court for domestic assault and battery. 6:52 pm A 911 caller reported a possible disturbance or fight involving youths on Ash Street. Two officers responded and spoke with the individuals who stated that they were talking loudly because they had a bad day. 5:36 pm A caller reported that a small dog was running in and out of the roadway on Wood Street, causing a traffic back up. Officer William Burchard checked the area with a negative find on the dog. 5:07 pm Officer Matthew McNeil reported that he came upon a telephone companies truck that was blocking part of the roadway on Grove Street. Volunteerism December 21, 2012 — Congressman-elect Joe Kennedy rolls up his sleeves and gets ready to work at Project Just Because [PJB] as founder Cherylann Lambert Walsh explains the order he has to pick for child number 15,132, one more than last year. The first item on the list is a fire truck, which the newly wed, newly elected former prosecutor found joy in discovering (Below). The group observed a moment of silence at 9:30 am this morning in memory of the tragedy at Newtown,Connecticut, as requested by the nation's leaders. PJB is a charity that Ms. Lambert Walsh began in her basement fourteen years ago, and has blossomed into a year-round charity serving the needs of area families. It operates out of former office/light industrial space at 85 South Street in Hopkinton with rooms full of Tupperware storage bins stacked as high as any of the twenty volunteers can reach. Ms. Lambert Walsh expressed hope that Mr. Kennedy's participation would encourage more corporate participation. Mary K. Venezia (nee Bortree), 89
Mary graduated from Thevenet Hall in Highland Mill, NY in 1941 and went on to NYC doing secretarial work until her marriage in 1944. Her husband, Joe was a career army officer and for the next 28 years they traveled half the world with new Army assignments and raised 4 children. Mary went back to work in 1960 and did various secretarial work for several banks and a US Congressman until her husband and she retired to Cape Coral, Fl. in 1977. They enjoyed 33 happy years of Florida retirement. These last years without her dear husband have been difficult, and while her family will miss her, she is now back in company of her life partner and at peace.
Mary was a devoted Roman Catholic and daily mass participant for most of her adult life. She was an avid and prolific knitter, seamstress, and reader. Mary was active in the Catholic women's group at the St. Andrews, Ladies of the Elks, and St. Vincent DePaul Society. Visitation will be on Monday December 17 from 5:00 - 7:00 PM at Coral Ridge Funeral Home, 1630 SW Pine Island Rd. Cape Coral. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday December 18 at 11:30 AM at St. Andrew Catholic Church, 2628 Del Prado Blvd, Cape Coral, with entombment to follow at Coral Ridge Cemetery. Man Injured in East Street Crash
vs. Tree December 20, 2012 — A 59 year-old Hopkinton man was taken to MetroWest Medical Center via Hopkinton ambulance under Advanced Life Support protocol after striking a tree on East Street near the YMCA property. The man told a good Samaritan who rushed to the scene that he swerved to avoid an animal in the road. The tree he hit is off-camera in the main photo, but is shown in an inset on the right. The car smashed into the tree and wound up facing in the other direction. |

The driver refused treatment by the Fire Department ambulance, but was instead given accommodations at Police Headquarters, under arrest for OUI . The Southborough Police Department was notified and responded. 2:11 pm Officer David Shane assisted a disabled motor vehicle on West Main Street. 2:12 pm A resident of Ash Street reported that a man unknown to her was at her house in a white van and walked to the back of the house to put a card in the door. HSI seeks public's help identifying 'Jane Doe' producer of child pornography, rescuing young child from ongoing sexual abuse
The "Jane Doe" criminal complaint and arrest warrant signed Tuesday in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia is the second obtained by HSI's Child Exploitation Investigations Unit this year. The first Jane Doe was arrested with her husband in Portland, Ore., in September, after the agency sought and received tips from the public to identifying her.
Jane Doe, pictured here, is described by HSI special agents as a Caucasian female, 23 to 29 years old, with a medium build, brown hair with blond highlights and hazel/green eye color. She has a mole on her left thigh and a tongue piercing, with a white round stud with a pink dot. Although her whereabouts are unknown, special agents investigating this case believe she lives somewhere in the United States. She is believed to have produced at least one long-form child pornography video featuring herself engaging in explicit sexual conduct with a 4 to 5-year-old victim.
HSI special agents received an investigative referral from the Danish National Police, after the video was downloaded by law enforcement officers in Denmark. The material was submitted to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children, the national clearinghouse for child sexual exploitation material. The center determined that the victim had not yet been identified or rescued.
Jane Doe's information and photos are also being distributed through law enforcement channels by the HSI Victim Identification Unit in an effort to find the perpetrator and rescue the victim.

Vehicle Stop Results in Large Seizure of Narcotics
While the trooper was conducting the motor vehicle stop, he detected a strong odor of marijuana coming from inside the car. Trooper Cazares requested and received assistance from Sergeant Michael Andrews and Trooper Joshua Rucho of the Northampton Barracks. ARZATE and BERARD were asked to step out of the vehicle so the troopers could conduct a motor vehicle inventory. During the inventory, Trooper Rucho located a plastic baggie containing a white powdery substance believed to be cocaine in the front seat center console, eight cell phones, a white plastic bag containing a large amount of cash approximately $13,000, and 15 pounds of individually packaged clear bags containing a green leafy substance believed to be marijuana in the trunk. Upon the discovery, ARZATE attempted to flee on foot but after a brief pursuit was apprehended. Both parties were placed under arrest and transported to the Massachusetts State Police Barracks in Northampton where they were booked. They were charged with Trafficking in Cocaine and Possession to Distribute Class D. Additionally, ARZATE was charged with a Plate light violation. Both men will be arraigned in Holyoke District Court. The approximate street value of the cocaine is $20,000 and the marijuana is $4,000 a pound. |

2013 Boston Marathon

Boston Marathon numbers to the Hopkinton Public Library
Foundation (HPLF) in the town’s nonprofit marathon number

compete in the Boston Marathon on Monday, April 15, 2013, and

Dog Waste + Drinking Water = CONTAMINATION
The town municipal well fields offer a number of great walking trails at Fruit Street and Charles McIntyre Lane, off Lake Whitewall. However we have noticed an increase in the amount of pet waste that is being left behind in the direct recharge area of the wells. This waste poses a potential risk of contamination of the water supply. Hotel, Amphitheater on Former Grounds of Westborough State Hospital
South African native and Hopkinton resident Anton Nel sat down with Alexandria Ellis in the HopNews office to discuss his plans to convert the former grounds of the Westborough State Hospital into a mixed use development with a state-of-the-art 96,000 ft² Motion Picture Studio at its heart, surrounded by a hotel — possibly 5-star — an amphitheater for Shakespeare in the Park as well as restaurants, offices and retail stores. Dale Cameron Cook
He attended Stanford University in Palo Alto, CA, and received dual degrees, including an MS in electrical engineering in 1963. After graduation, he married his first wife, Mary, and moved to Phoenix, AZ, where the couple had their first son, Nathanial. The family later moved to Massachusetts, where their second son, Bryan, was born. For many years, Dale worked at Digital Equipment Corporation in diagnostics, and he later taught about computers at Bentley College and other sites, before his retirement.Dale loved New England — its nature, landscapes, and seasons — and he often said he considered himself a true New Englander, even though he’d grown up in California. He liked the outdoors, and followed a number of interests there, including orienteering, canoeing, jogging, walking, biking, and cross country skiing. He liked building and repairing things, from Heathkit television sets to an aerial TV antenna that towered above his house back in the 1970s. He also loved mental challenges, including acrostic puzzles and watching "Jeopardy!" He was an avid Ham radio user for a time (his call letters " N1US " were his license plate numbers for years), and he loved cheering on the Boston Red Sox. He loved sharing stories and anecdotes, playing Hearts, and watching "Dallas," and, later, "House."Dale leaves behind his wife and partner of 33 years, Theresa Holden; two sons, Nathanial, of Norwood, MA, and Bryan (Kirsten), of Okanogan, WA; a brother, Marshall (Ellen), of Madison, WI; a nephew, Jeremiah (Kimberly), of Stoughton, WI; and many other friends and family members, who will miss him dearly. vehicle on East Main Street. 9:17 pm Officer Linda Higgins assisted the Fire Department with an arching wire on Main Street. 8:51 pm Officer Peter Booth assisted the Fire Department with a CO detector that was going off at a residence on Tammer Lane. 4:05 pm Two officers responded to a motor vehicle accident with personal injuries on Wood Street. 2:49 pm Officer Gregg DeBoer assisted the Fire Department with a fire alarm activation on Davis Road. 9:44 am A caller reported that there was a roll of fencing in the roadway on route 495. The State Police were notified. 9:36 am A 911 caller reported a motor vehicle accident without personal injury on West Main Street. Officer Patrick O'Brien responded to assist. 4:35 am Sgt. John Porter assisted the Fire Department with a fire alarm activation on Main Street.
Saturday, December 15, 2012 5:55 pm Sgt. Scott vanRaalten assisted the Southborough Police Department with a perimeter search for a suspect on Turnpike Road. 5:33 pm A Cedar Street resident reported hearing what he believed to be a loud explosion. Officer Aaron O'Neil checked the area but did not hear anything suspicious. 4:16 pm There were multiple 911 calls regarding a youth that tore up the athletic fields on Greenwood Road with his vehicle. Three officers responded and spoke with all the youths involved and advised that there was no damage to the fields. 3:55 pm The State Police assisted a disabled motor vehicle on 495. 1:26 am A caller reported heavy equipment being operated on Elm Street. Officer Jacob Campbell responded and advised that he shut down an electrical company that was doing a project.
Friday, December 14, 2012 10:12 pm A resident of Colella Farm Road reported that two vehicles pulled up in front of his house, one of the vehicles parked on the side of the road, and the occupants got out of it and into the other vehicle which then drove away. Officer Aaron O'Neil checked the area and advised that there was no further suspicious activity. 6:37 pm There were multiple 911 calls for a motor vehicle accident without personal injury on Hayden Rowe Street. Three officers responded to assist. 5:20 pm A Grove Street resident spoke with Officer Gregg DeBoer regarding being harassed on the phone due to a possible scam. 5:16 pm A resident of Fenton Street complained about an on-going issue of a woman constantly texting while driving through his neighborhood and who has nearly hit people several times. 4:15 pm A caller reported that he was just almost hit, while crossing the roadway on Main Street, by a vehicle that ran a red light. Officer Gregg DeBoer checked the area with a negative find on the vehicle. 3:26 pm The Upton Police Department reported an erratic operator on 495. The State Police were notified and responded. 1:58 pm Officer Stephen Buckley assisted the Fire Department with gaining entry into a house on School Street which had an alarm sounding with no one home. 12:50 pm An anonymous caller reported that suspicious people were on the property of a home that the town tore down on Meserve Street. Officer Thomas Griffin spoke with the person who stated that he was given permission by the contractor to take some scrap metal. He was advised to remove the items in his vehicle and come back with the contractor. 11:42 am Officer Stephen Buckley assisted a disabled motor vehicle on West Main Street. |

Orleans Southwest Supervisory Union, a six-community
regional district in Vermont. He began his career as a
mathematics teacher at the John F. Kennedy Jr. High School
in Enfield, CT.
