Andy Boyce Key to Solarize Success

To the Editor:

Thanks to the people of Hopkinton, Solarize Massachusetts was a resounding success this year.

 

The group purchasing program, which helps to make solar more affordable, is a joint venture of the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center and the Massachusetts Department of Energy Resources launched in 17 communities across the state this year. The program generated 803 solar contracts signed statewide representing 5.1 megawatts of clean, renewable energy. In Hopkinton, residents and businesses have contracted 367.6 kilowatts of new solar, saving hundreds of dollars annually on their electric bills.

 

The program’s local volunteer coordinator, Andy Boyce, was key to this success. Norman Khumalo support was also invaluable to this effort, bridging the gap between state agencies and municipal officials and Hopkinton residents.

 

We simply could not have seen these results without the hard work of volunteers, advocates and municipal leaders on the ground in Hopkinton. Thanks to its leadership, Hopkinton will pave the way towards a cleaner energy future for the next generation.

HCA Members Show December 14 – January 10

Members Can Submit Artwork December 9 - 11

HOPKINTON, MA (December 5, 2012) -- The artwork of its talented members will be featured at the HCA Members Show at the Hopkinton Center for the Arts, 98 Hayden Rowe in Hopkinton from December 14 – January 10.  A special reception, open to the public, will be held Friday, December 14 at 6:00 p.m. Gallery hours are Monday through Thursday, 1:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m., or by appointment.  The exhibition is free and open to the public.   

 

Members of the Hopkinton Center for the Arts can submit up to two pieces of artwork on December 9 from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m., or on December 10 and 11 from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m.  All 2D media will be accepted, including photography, and 3D work if it can be hung on the wall and does not protrude more than 10 inches. Maximum height and width, 40 inches; all work must be wired. No sawtooth hangers or sandwich frames, please.  For more information and an entry form, please visit www.hopartscenter.org.

9:14 pm Officer Peter Booth stopped a motor vehicle on Wood Street and subsequently arrested a 31 year old male from Hopkinton for a Warrant.
6:08 pm Officer Aaron O'Neil responded to a motor vehicle accident without personal injury on South Street.
4:05 pm There were several calls for a loud explosion on Lumber Street. Officer Aaron O'Neil responded and advised that it was blasting in a construction zone.
4:04 pm Officer Peter Booth checked on a social worker who was going door to door on Davis Road.
3:29 pm A bus driver reported seeing two youths climbing inside of a window on Hayden Rowe Street. Two officers responded and advised that it was the home owner's son.
1:20 pm Officer Patrick O'Brien assisted the Fire Department with a medical call on South Street.
11:04 am A caller from East Main Street complained about trash being picked up early in the morning at a neighboring business.
10:00 am An Oakhurst Road resident reported that her mailbox and a neighbor's mailbox had been run over. Officer Patrick O'Brien responded and took a report.
8:43 am Officer Patrick O'Brien assisted with a very minor motor vehicle accident.

 10:27 pm A 911 caller reported an erratic operator on Main Street. Officer Gregg DeBoer stopped the vehicle and issued the operator a verbal warning for marked lanes.
6:21 pm A walk-in spoke with Officer Aaron O'Neil regarding another vehicle hitting her and then taking off from the scene.
1:44 pm A mail carrier reported that an older male left a residence of D.J. Murphy Lane, with a rolling suitcase, walked to the end of the road and then appeared to be waiting for someone. Officer Stephen Buckley located the man who was waiting to be picked up to go on a trip.
5:56 am A 911 caller reported an injured deer in the roadway on West Main Street. Officer Linda Higgins located the deer, which was deceased, and notified the DPW.

Selectmen Choose to Have Permanent Building Committee Look at Hopkinton Center for the Arts

December 4,  2012 — Hopkinton Community Endowment founder Chuck Joseph, and CPC (Community Preservation Committee) Chair Henry Kunicki went before the Selectmen this evening asking for guidance on whether to tear down the historic Terry Barn and silo at the Center for the Arts and build anew, or conform it to current codes to facilitate spaces for classrooms. Mr. Joseph made it clear that his goal was to get it done quickly.

       "Our preference is to move forward," said Mr. Joseph. "I don't think one decision is more moral than the other." However, when Hopkinton Historical Commission member Claire Wright had her chance to speak, you might say she disagreed.

       "It would be a shame [to tear it down], because one group is in a hurry,"  She said. 

       "The CPA [Community Preservation Act - allows a community to vote to put aside a portion of its tax revenue for recreational, open space, affordable housing and historical purposes. Hopkinton voted to put, 2% aside.] was passed to protect historical structures as opposed to tearing down and building new," said Selectman Brian Herr, who oversaw the years-long renovation of the barn and silo main structures.

        One of the proponents  said the structural engineers were surprised  at how much the building needs to be readied for todays' codes. 

        Mr. Herr said $350,000 had been spent so far for renovation of the facility and its structural integrity.

         "It allows the main elements to stand for another 150 years. The frame of the silo is rock solid,"  Mr. Herr said. The silo had been moved in a cradle strap by a crane over the roof of the auxiliary building behind the barn and set down on a prepared cement pad a few years ago.

         "The major work has already been done," Mr. Herr said. "Structural engineers signed off on this  8 years ago."

         Selectman Chair Ben Palleiko said, "I think the board needs a  better sense of where we're at." He said that he was hearing from one  side it was falling down and from another that it would last forever. 

         The Selectmen, upon a suggestion from Town Manager Norman Khumalo, decided that the Permanent Building Committee needed to look at the details.

        The Hopkinton Center for the Arts is a private endeavor which is using public and private money for the property's renovation. They lease  from the town for a nominal sum.

20/20 Group Expands Vision

 

December 4, 2012 — Builder Finley Perry (standing) and business consultant David Hamacher (to his left) represented the 20/20 group last evening in a presentation of projected planning of Main Street that increased the scope to the entire corridor from Legacy Farms to Downey Street. Other studies have concentrated on Main Street in the Downtown, but this group, a sub-set of the Chamber of Commerce, has decided that the entire roadway could be planned with a strategy of zoning incentives and disincentives, as well as selling to the community.

 

Mr. Perry asked rhetorical questions that revealed underlying sentiments some have about the existing Downtown. 

 

He asked if a gas station is the best and highest use of that property. He suggested the drug store could be three stories tall, instead of one.

 

"The whole Downtown revitalization process is splintered," said Planning Board member Mark Abate, referring to the overlapping interests of more than one group that is studying Downtown improvements. "One group should be in charge of the process," he said. Currently, at least two groups, the DRC (Downtown Revitalization Committee and the DISC (Downtown Initiative Steering Committee) have been cast in similar roles.

 

"I'm not sure we have the political will or public process," said Planning Board member Dick MacDonald.

 

"We've learned," Mr. Perry said, "that people don't want to move [take action] without being consulted. This is an effort to look at the whole corridor instead of just the Downtown."

 

20/20 would like to be able to make some sort of presentation to next year's Town Meeting, and so will meet before the next scheduled January 7, 2013 Planning Board meeting to develop a more detailed outline to be available for the January 7 meeting.

Girls Track Hopes To Kick Off Winter Season With 109th

As the first meet of the season approaches on December 8th against Westwood, the Hopkinton High School indoor track team begins to prepare for the winter season. The girls track team, coached by Brian Hall, is looking to continue their record of 108 straight league wins. 9:17 pm A caller complained about vehicles parked all over the Middle School including the fire lane. Detective Timothy Brennan responded and moved the vehicles along.

7:38 pm A motorist reported that a vehicle crossed the double yellow line on West Main Street a couple of times. Officer William Burchard checked the area with a negative find.

3:53 pm A resident of Sylvan Way reported that hunter's gunshots sounded like they were too close to her house. Officer Peter Booth responded and advised that they may seem closer than they really are due to no leaves on the trees.

2:10 pm Loss Prevention reported that they had a female detained for shoplifting on West Main Street. Officer Stephen Buckley responded and subsequently arrested a 44 year old female from Hopkinton and charged her with Shoplifting by Concealing Merchandise.

2:10 pm A walk-in from spoke with officer David Shane regarding fraud.

12:52 pm A Hayden Rowe Street resident reported an odor of natural gas outside her house. Officer Stephen Buckley responded and assisted the Fire Department.

11:18 am Officer Stephen Buckley performed community relations on Davis Road.

8:57 am A caller reported a car vs. bicyclist accident on Main Street. Sgt. Joseph Bennett responded and located the bicyclist who refused medical attention.

6:24 pm Officer Peter Booth assisted the Fire Department with an odor of natural gas on Wood Street.

6:17 pm A walk-in spoke with Sgt. Michael Sutton regarding her hitting two separate stop signs on Elm Street.

4:40 pm A motorist reported that a vehicle was tailgating him, passed him and then exchanged words when they pulled over on Cedar Street. Officer Peter Booth stopped the vehicle and spoke with the operator.

12:58 pm A passing motorist reported that a male, on a bicycle, had a large bag over his shoulder and walked into the woods. Detective Timothy Brennan located the man who was picking up cans.

9:42 am A caller from Curtis Road reported that a pickup truck was parked in front of a neighbor's house. Officer Thomas Griffin responded and advised that the vehicle comes back to a roofing company.

9:36 am Officer Thomas Griffin assisted a disabled motor vehicle on East Main Street.

8:13 am A resident of Lumber Street reported that a hunter was parked on his property and did not want him parked there. Officer Patrick O'Brien responded and advised that the operator moved the vehicle.

December 3, 2012 — A Hopkinton Fire Engine arrives at Center School as the students march onto the Hopkinton Common as they have practiced in drills. This time, however, they were evacuated due to a strong odor of natural gas. Simultaneously, the Fire Department responded to Elmwood School for the report of a 51 year-old male with chest pains.

Eighteen and Counting

November 30, 2012 — Webster First Federal Credit Union CEO, Michael Lussier was on hand to cut the ribbon at the grand opening celebration at their eighteenth branch opening at 22 South Street today, in the plaza with Price Chopper. Visitors and customers were treated to food and refreshments and live entertainment as well as balloon animals for the kids. They topped it off by presenting a check for $3,000 to Project Just Because. Please check back tomorrow for a short video hello from Mr. Lussier.

Shop Holiday Hours at Boosters Store

 

Hopkinton High School students (left to right) Carmen Ramos, Allison Raybuck, Dacotah Clark, Courtney Manning and Alec Vost get their holiday shopping done early at the Boosters store -- where all proceeds benefit Hopkinton athletics.  Located just inside the lobby at the high school, the store is open every day during lunch block from 10:45 a.m. to 12: 20 p.m.  Extended holiday hours include:  Monday through Friday, 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m.; Saturdays – December 1, 8, 15 and 22 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. – and during evening basketball games on Tuesdays, Dec. 11 and 18 as well as Friday, Dec. 14 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. (Hopkinton Youth Basketball Fan Appreciation Night).  Check the website at www.hopkintonboosters.com for more detailed information and also a first peek at the all new on-line shopping option. 

 

 HPTA Announcements

  • • Registration for the Holiday Art Workshop for both MS & Hopkins have been extended until 12/4.

  • • The deadline for the HPTA Reflections has been extended to 12/7.

  • • Sue Starzyk, a math tutor at Hopkins, recently lost her home to a fire. Everyone got out safely, but she is left with nothing. The Hopkins staff is collecting money and household items for Sue and her family. Kim Picard, at the front office of Hopkins, has a manila envelope for monetary contributions. On November 30th, the staff are going to present the collected items and money. If anyone is interested in donating, please see Kim Picard.

  • • Donations for Alyson Geary - The HPTA is taking donations from parents and members in honor of Alyson Geary. The Hopkinton High School principal will be leaving for a new job at the end of 2012. The HPTA would like to honor her years of service with a gift to the high school in her name. The gift to the HS will most likely be in the form of something associated with the Arts or Technology, both areas of passion for Alyson. If you would like to contribute to this gift, please mail your check, made payable to the HPTA to Jenni Schroeder at 8 West Elm Street. Please mail donations ASAP as time is of the essence.
