Winter Water Tips The Water Department responds to numerous frozen water pipe calls each winter with the majority of them located inside the home. There are several measures that homeowners can take to prevent their water pipes from freezing. The Water Department would like to offer the following tips:
First locate your main water shut off valve and meter. You need to check your valve and make sure it works in case of an emergency. It is usually located in your basement on the side facing the street. Insure that the area immediately surrounding the valve and meter is warm enough to prevent freezing. In older homes with fieldstone and rock foundations make sure there are no direct drafts from the holes in the walls or gaps in the windows and doors. If these areas remain cold constantly, you should insulate your pipes or wrap them in heating tape. Both of these items can be found in any home improvement store. Remember, even if the room temperature is warm, a direct cold draft on your water pipes, can cause them to freeze!
If you are unable to thaw the pipe, you should then contact a plumber. If the problem is on the street side of your meter, you should then contact the Water Department.
If your water has frozen in the past and the problem has not been corrected, you should hire a water department licensed contractor to replace and lower your pipe. Also, do not forget to turn off and drain the supply to your outside faucets and sprinklers. If left on they will freeze and burst.
To help conserve water during the winter, insulate your hot water pipes. This will help to retain the heat and prevent you from having to run the water long in order to get it hot. If you are going away for and extend period of time, do not turn your heat down too low. Even your heating pipes can freeze and burst during extended cold snaps.
Have a great Holiday season!

Schiloski's the Name, Football's the Game
by Peter Marso November 8, 2012 — If anybody hears
the name Schiloski in Hopkinton they can’t help but think of the
Hopkinton High-School Football Players who put the Hiller
Football Program on the map in the early 80s, Robbie, Phil.
Peter and Richie. The Hillers, along with brother Richie Schiloski, were knocking on the Super Bowl Door each year. Richie was an outstanding Running Back who was selected to play in The Elite Shiners' Game his Senior Year. Brothers Robbie and Peter were also fine contributors to the Hiller Program. Phil got his Coaching Career started in 1986-2003 at his alma mater Hopkinton under his own mentor Coach Dave Hughes. 17 years with the Hillers including a super bowl in 1993 and numerous TVL Titles. Phil also Coached his own son Ryan who was an outstanding Running Back for Coach Hughes. In fact he still holds the record for most Touch Downs (6) in a single game. Phil played there with some outstanding Hillers. Richie Schiloski, Mike Manzir, Kevin Pitts, Paul Martin, Chuck Beach, John Gray, and quarterback, Brian Auen, Opportunity Struck from the Hill as Phil became an assistant coach at Nipmuc Regional, a small School in the Upton-Mendon School District.
Phil went to Upton with the Hope of some day becoming a Head Coach ( It worked). Nipmuc was starting their own Football program in the early 2000's and Phil became part of it. The Hopkinton Grad became one of Nipmuc’s assistant football Coaches. In 2007 because of Phil’s outstanding contribution , he was promoted to his dream job as the Head Coach Of Nipmuc Warrior Football. This came with the thoughts of hiring assistant Coaches, and he didn't have to look far as he gave former Hopkinton Hillers a chance to Coach with him. He Hired Ed Buckley a Former Hiller Coach as his line Coach along with Chuck Moore ( Hopkinton Town Official ) as his Offensive Coordinator. Scott Glassman Hiller SuperBowl Player became Defensive Back Field Coach. Brother Richie, Ian Fowler, Mike Brodeur, Mike Tancerde; all Hiller players were also Put on as vital assistants. So as you see, there is plenty of Hiller Flavor Coaching the Nipmuc Warriors.
Phil has brought Nipmuc to some big heights already. He has had them during 2007-2012, They have been in two state Playoffs. They beat rival Northbridge in 2011, which has to be one of the biggest upsets in Nipmuc Football, only to lose a thriller in last year’s State Playoffs. The current team is 4-3 and heading to the playoffs. Nephew Richie Schiloski is coming along as a star sophomore.
The past teams have posted 7-3,6-5,and 7-5. Excellent considering the fact that Nipmuc plays Schools much bigger than their enrollment, in the Likes of Clinton, Worcester North, Tantasqua, Northbridge, Shepherd Hill, Burncoat, Bartlett of Webster. Phil and his Hiller Connections are bringing Nipmuc to a High-Level in Central Mass Football. The Nipmuc School System is very thankful to have hired Hopkinton’s Phil Schiloski. and glad to have the Hiller Assistance.
Just to mention brother Richie's daughter
Danielle is an outstanding field Hockey player for the Warriors.
Phil has put in over 27 years of coaching high-school football
and enjoys every moment of the game. Phil is currently a Supervisor for the Town Of Hopkinton. Phil married the former Jody Plucker ( Hopkinton Grad ) and they have three Children Ryan, Heather, Sean and one Granddaughter. They are currently living in Hopedale, Mass. As you can see the Nipmuc Football Program is flooded with Hopkinton Flavor and Phil Schiloski is making believers in the small towns of Upton and Mendon. By Peter Marso, Special to HopNews. |
