SARCASTIC THANK YOU NOTE

To the Anonymous person who took the time to paint our clubhouse:

While we thank you for your efforts, we wish you would have first consulted the membership about the colors and methods used early Sunday morning prior to the Annual Chicken BBQ.

As one of the oldest rod and gun clubs in the state with our own, some might even say outdated, thoughts on styling, the white splotches on brown affect is generally felt by the membership as too modern for our tastes.

All the members I spoke with during the BBQ stated they would have preferred a solid brown, or white, wall.

You are welcome to stop by and give it another go, but please contact me beforehand for approved color chips and some method suggestions.

Respectfully,

Lee Wright

Are You Her Type?
Hopkinton mother seeks match using social media

September 10, 2012 — Maria is a stay-at-home mother to our two children ages 16 and 12. She is an artist who loves to cook, travel, and spend time with her family and friends.

Maria was diagnosed with Type 1 (Juvenile) diabetes on her 10th birthday. After many years with the disease, her native kidneys failed and she received a kidney from her father on March 15, 1994. (18 years ago). This trans

planted kidney has now failed, and Maria is in need of another transplant. She is currently undergoing dialysis treatments 3 days a week - she remains otherwise healthy, but we know dialysis will speed up her diabetes complications and put her at more risk for heart disease, amputation, and other health issues.

Maria has been on the top of the kidney/pancreas list since June 2011 (this would be from a deceased donor). Since starting dialysis, her body is rejecting her father's kidney and producing more fighting antibodies. These antibodies have now made her sensitized to certain donors - making it difficult to find a match. Her odds of matching a potential donor are 30%, therefore it is now necessary to find a pool of eligible living donors to increase her matching odds.

Mass General Hospital only received 4 kidney/pancreas' for transplant last year. Each only had a 30% chance of matching Maria, and none did. She was called in on January 26, 2012 for a transplant and the donor pancreas could not be used. The kidney alone went to the person at the top of the kidney only list. Maria was called in again on July 1, 2012 and the donor ended up having a positive cross match, which means Maria would reject the transplant. Maria was called in a third time on August 15th and this was a very good match..however, when the organs were procured the pancreas once again could not be used,We now know that it could take a long time for a deceased donor to match Maria..please help spread her story so that a living donor can come forward.

A good living donor candidate is someone who is healthy, well-informed and makes a voluntary decision to donate one of their kidneys. Living donors must be over 18 and usually under 70 years of age. They must be in good general health, have a Body Mass Index (BMI) of less than 30, a non-smoker, with no evidence of significant high blood pressure, diabetes, cancer, kidney disease, heart disease or hepatitis. Living donors can live in any state and it is important to know that all medicals costs are covered by the recipients health insurance. As you might imagine, donating life to another is a remarkable gift that takes a great deal of thought that can only be obtained by being well informed.

Maria's blood type is A+ and her kidney donor must have A or O blood type. Some people have inquired on how to proceed with testing. For anyone interested, please contact:

SERVER DOWN
The Server that has redirected people from HopNews.com to HopkintonNews.com since this past June is apparently down, as is the new forum, Quality Conversations. In the meantime we might have used the old Town Talk, but that server is apparently down, too [sound of crossing fingers].
This is HopkintonNews.com, it might be helpful to bookmark it for now, and we'll get the message out when we know the other server is up and working, and we'll ask people to go back to HopNews, which is where we want to be anyway. Whew! Care to know more? Are you sure?: It may sound like a familiar story, because I have told it before.

The old server we used was a Microsoft Windows server, which is to the server world what Beta was  to the consumer video. It was really good when it came out, but the world of technology chose and supported Linux, and so kept improving it. Microsoft stopped supporting changes to their servers in 2003. The old Town Talk is hosted on a Windows server, as was the old HopNews, and as are the HopNews pages that have not been converted.

So, every time there was an interruption in service and HopNews ceased to function, we were told by our domain host provider it was because it was on an old server, and it was our fault because we didn't switch. It always happened when there was a hot news story and people logged on by the hundreds to see what was up.

We have been in the process of moving pages and files to the new server since June. The plan is that once all of the pages are converted, the new server will be he new HopNews.com. But there are around 500 of them, and they have to be converted manually, so it is taking some time. When people go to HopNews.com, and this has been since June, they get redirected to HopkintonNews.com. And HopNews.com is down right now.

We have alerted our facebook fans and Twitter followers of the situation, but you can help, too.

Would you be kind enough to alert your facebook friends that to get to HopNews, they need to go to:

And to reach Robert, they can do so at RobertFalcione@gmail.com

Planning Board to Hear Plans for Solar Farm on Fruit Street
EL Harvey facility back on front burner

September 9, 2012 —The Hopkinton Sustainable Green Committee, according to the Planning Board's agenda for Monday, September 10, 2012, will present a plan to the board for a Solar Farm on Fruit Street. The 23-acre Solar Farm is intended to be constructed on a parcel formerly designated for low income housing on the Town-owned parcel.

The board will also hear from EL Harvey & Sons, who want to amend some of their Special Permits for their long-planned MRRF (Materials Recycling and Recovery Facility) that they will bring before the Board of Appeals. Four of the seven Special Permits granted EL Harvey are no longer needed; three because a contentious Town Meeting passed a new map that drew the WRPOD (Water Resources Protection Overlay District) around the outside of the Harvey property under consideration, and another because the use, as a result of bylaw changes, is now a use by right.

EL Harvey would like the Planning Department's Director of Municipal Inspections to determine that the changes they seek — including an increase in the size of their maintenance garage from 20,000 to 30,000 square feet— are not substantial. If he determines they are substantial, then the Applicant will need to appear before the Board of Appeals for a Public Hearing for which abutters and the public are invited to give input.

Legacy Farms will have hearings continued on storm water issues and traffic mitigation on the South side, and the redirecting of Frankland Road on the North.

Planning Board meetings begin at 7:30 pm.

File photo of then Board of Appeals Chair Wayne Davies and EL Harvey principal, Jim Harvey following the completion of the hearings.

Quality Conversations and Price Drops

September 9, 2012 — It is remarkable that only two weeks have gone by since HopNews abandoned the old discussion page in favor of the new "Quality Conversations." There are nearly 100 signed on members and hundreds more who read. There would be well over 100 if the spambots had their way, but to quote a former president, "That dog ain't gonna hunt." There are over 7,000 views of posts in that timeframe, and given that the views increased exponentially as new members signed on and more people read, it is reasonable to project that future two-week periods will yield much higher numbers.

One member lamented that it was too "plain vanilla," but if that is the only negative so far, then we can chalk one up in the success column. People are expressing themselves without the personal attacks that were the signature of the old board, and part of that is because everyone has a handle, a name they use to designate who they are to other members. Some are apparently named in a way that they do not mind if people know who they are, like droberts01748, who signed as Dave on at least one occasion. And the trolls know they can be banned for good, which has happened to one already. His opinion and links were being challenged, and he chose to answer with an insulting rant, even after being offered an olive branch.

One of the great things about the new board is that topics with new posts rise to the top of the board, and when a topic has a new post in its thread, the icon turns red for members, saving them much time. That is one of the great features of membership.

Another fun feature of membership is that a member can PM (private message) another member with a sidebar of congratulations or a question about something relevant. Some members are recognizable by their handle, which they carried over from the other board, like Robert, MrVBall, Vito, Ed Harrow, Lily, SaddleHiller, RHG and a host of others.

One such member is Andy Boyce, who is the Solar Coach for Solarize Hopkinton. Being the only person in Hopkinton that we know of with a water powered turbine for electric conversion, Andy was ahead of the curve and is on fire for alternative energy (See 2010 HopNews feature story). Renewable energy is the wave of the future. Ride the wave in the present by getting in touch with Andy and taking advantage of this particular program, which is winding down its window of opportunity to enable discounts with its tiered structure. His email is in the post below.

Solarize Hopkinton update

by Solar Coach » Thu Sep 06, 2012 12:49 pm

The Hopkinton Solarize program crossed into tier 3 of the price reduction last week. The price just dropped for everyone who signed on from $3.69/Watt (tier 1) to $3.55 (tier 3). We're well on our way to reaching tier 5 ($3.39/Watt). Solarize MA is a group purchasing plan arranged by the State Clean Energy Center for all residents and businesses in town to purchase solar electric systems at a discount. The more people sign on, the lower the price and only 17 towns are eligible. If anyone is interested in joining the program or wants more information on how it works, please send an email to solarizehopkinton@gmail.com. There are both purchase and no money down options. 305 residents and businesses have expressed interest in getting a site evaluation so far. -Andy

Magic Bus Drives on Wrong Side of Road

September 7, 2012 — This school bus with the name of a Somerville, Mass company on the side, decided to leave its space in the proper lane (arrow) and take advantage of the lull in traffic going in the opposite direction to use that lane too in order to reach the storage lane for the left turn. The storage lane for the left turn is too short, moving many drivers during the day to violate the law as is this driver. It should be all the way back to the manhole cover, and likely will be one day as the traffic from Legacy Farms increases and the parking spaces on the left side of the road are removed.
