June 24, 2012 — "Let's keep the location undisclosed," suggests sculptor Jeff Buccacio, referring to his studio in the middle of property that straddles Hopkinton and another town, during a recent interview following a chance introduction a couple weeks ago.
        The first thing that catches a visitor's eye walking into the studio space is an eight-foot tall clay robot that looks like it is ready for a movie set. In fact, says Mr. Buccacio, it is being commissioned by world famous photographer Gary Land for a project of his.
        Once the visitor can remove eyes from the robot, movie bills come into focus from the surrounding walls, posters that tell a tale of a high level of commercial art he has worked on: Posters from A.I, Spiderman 3, Men in Black 2, Bicentennial Man, Hellboy, the X-Files, Jurassic Park III, and more. Colleague Ray Miller, an engineer who Mr. Buccacio called a "giant," was in the studio on this day.
        "I am working with a military contractor," he said, "to develop an electronic eyeball for the remote weapon sensor to be able to fire remotely from inside the attack vehicle."
        "Ray and I are working on a fully mechanized robot for a client who is New England-based," said Mr. Buccacio before disclosing Mr. Land's name. "We are proud of it," he said, referring to the New England connection.
        "We are hoping to bring the West Coast to the East," said Mr. Miller, making the connection with Hollywood. He worked for a company that made the cameras that did the imaging for the movie Predator.
         Below, Mr. Buccacio dusts off a cast sculpture to prepare for the photograph. The pieces are contracted by the company that makes the bags the medic has on his back. He doesn't know where they go, but people have seen them in the background on the military channel.
         One of Mr. Buccacio's latest projects is to make life-casts of 3-4 Auschwitz victims for a holocaust memorial.
         "I need to do that," he said.
         "We want to make good art," he said of himself and the other three people involved in the studio.
         "The real purpose of art is to make people think and grow."
         "We are all about the art, and not necessarily the marketing," he said.

June 24, 2012 — The Glamour Girls brought their karaoke entertainment to the Hopkinton Common this evening, covering all ages and genres of music.

   

Grove and Maple Street Accident

June 24, 2012 — Police and firefighters responded with lightning speed early this evening to an unexplained one-car crash against a phone pole at the intersection of Grove and Maple Streets. The male driver was taken to Milford Hospital.


Touched by Humans
June 24, 2012 Colella's Supermarket's lower lot was swamped this morning and early afternoon with youngsters lining up to sit in the driver's seats of trucks, construction vehicles and machines, fire engines and tree buckets, all donated to help the Hopkinton Public Library fundraise for their expansion at the Touch a Truck event. Of course, there were a few muscle cars for the grandfathers who showed up, too.

"The Sky Is Burnin'"
June 23, 2012 — It appeared to be fortuitous that the band Blackwell (facebook page), from Holliston (Nate Adelman, Nate Burket, Steve Snow, Marc Apesos), sang a cover song from their set list about the sky burning ("Burnin' Sky" by Bad Company), as the rain came down and a double rainbow appeared as a background in the sky behind them at the Hopkinton Center for the Arts Music Festival early this evening. To see and hear a minute-long  clip of this youthful, incredibly talented, rocking band, choose the video below, shot from a car window in the rain 200' away. Evelyn L. Wood, 92

We mourn the loss of Evie (Haynes) Wood, 92, who passed away June 5. She is lovingly remembered by family and friends for her warm, loving personality and constant smile. Her home was the gathering place for all the neighborhood children, friends, and relatives.
       She helped support our troops in WWII, then helped run the family business “Wood’s Friendly Superette”. She later worked at the Hopkinton Town Hall and was an active participant of the Framingham Heart Study. She loved painting in her spare time.
       Evie is predeceased by Walter Wood, her husband of 65 years. She leaves behind her 3 children, Peter Wood of McClellanville, SC; Lucinda (Cindy) Miller of Alton, NH; and Gail Fawson of Hopkinton, MA and their families. She had numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, and 2 great, great grandchildren. Many nieces and nephews will also miss her.
        Individuals wishing to honor her memory may make donations to: Framingham Heart Study, 73 Mt. Wayte Ave., Framingham, MA 01702-5827
        She will be buried in a private service beside her husband Walter at Mt. Auburn Cemetery in Hopkinton.

Food for the Mind
June 22, 2012 — Professional staff and residents of the Compass of Hopkinton, which is located inside the Golden Pond facility at 50 West Main Street, showed off their PhotoVoice project this evening at the Hopkinton Center for the Arts. Each of the seven residents, who are part of a special Alzheimer's treatment program in the Compass unit, took photos that they displayed this evening and wrote about what the photo meant to them. In some cases, the memory or sentiment had nothing to do with the photo's subject matter, but was an endearing thought that becomes part of the ongoing memory support treatment of this condition. "Fill a Backpack” Items Again Collected at St. Paul’s

 

HOPKINTON (June 22, 2012) -- In support of Project Just Because’s “Fill a Backpack” drive, St. Paul’s Episcopal Church will be collecting items for the program at the Church Office at 61 Wood Street in Hopkinton.  Collection hours are Sundays, 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 noon; Tuesdays, 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.; Wednesdays, 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.; and Thursdays, 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. The “Fill a Backpack” drive will run from July 1 to August 12. St. Paul’s invites other churches, groups, or individuals to join the Fill a Backpack Drive. Please contact the St. Paul’s Office at 508-435-4536 if you are interested in helping, or simply drop Fill a Backpack items off during collection times.

 

Project Just Because is trying to fill more than 2,000 backpacks to supply children in need, so that they will have what they need to start the school year on a positive note. They are specifically looking for backpacks, pencil sharpeners, lunch bags and lunch boxes, filler paper, scissors, calculators, protractors, pencil cases and 3-ring binders. Gift cards for Wal-Mart or Target also are welcome. There will also be a Fill a Backpack Display with post-its listing desired items at St. Paul’s.

June 22, 2012 — Hopkinton residents Ellen and Colm Scanlon saw Cornell's Pub on the market for six months before making their move and putting ink on a purchase and sale agreement just before Christmas last year. Six months later, making sure that "all good things come to those who wait," ten days ago the ABCC held a hearing on the license transfer and approved Mr. Scanlon as the new manager. Today they passed papers on the real estate, and took possession of the property.
       The Scanlons will be preparing for a reopening early next week. Check these pages for an announcement.

11:48 pm Officer Peter Booth checked a motor vehicle on Hayden Rowe Street.
10:17 pm Officer Peter Booth spoke with a person from Davis Road.
9:20 pm Officer Peter Booth spoke with the operator of a motor vehicle on Grove Street.
9:09 pm A caller from Fruit Street reported smoke alarms going off. Officer Philip Powers responded and assisted the Fire Department.
8:40 pm A caller from Roosevelt Road reported hearing a loud bang in the area. Officer Gregg DeBoer checked the area and found it all secure.
5:15 pm Officer Philip Powers responded to a minor motor vehicle accident with no personal injuries on South Street.
4:29 pm A caller reported water coming up through the roadway on Cross Street. Officer Philip Powers confirmed that there was water coming up and contacted the Water Department.
3:33 pm The Ashland Police Department reported a two car motor vehicle accident with no personal injuries on East Main Street. Officer Gregg DeBoer responded and subsequently arrested a 40 year old female for Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle.
3:25 pm A caller reported suspicious people on behind the church on Church Street. Officer Peter Booth responded and removed the youths.
2:14 pm A caller reported suspicious youths in the area of Church Street. Officer Philip Powers responded but they were gone upon his arrival.
7:24 am Officer Patrick O'Brien spoke with the operator of a motor vehicle on Cedar Street.

5:15 pm Officer Timothy Brennan confirmed that the crew needed to return to Elm Street as soon as possible because the road condition was unacceptable as is. The DPW was advised.
4:47 pm Officer Peter Booth responded to Walcott Valley Drive to take a report of threats.
3:12 pm Officer Timothy Brennan responded to Wood Street for a minor motor vehicle accident without personal injury.
1:52 am An Ash Street resident reported hearing a loud bang. Officer Matthew McNeil checked the area with a negative find.

Lexington High Students Win Middlesex DA’s Office Annual PSA Project

Middlesex County students create videos on topics related to healthy relationships, substance abuse and peer pressure

WOBURN- Three students from Lexington High School were chosen by their peers as the winners of the fourth annual Middlesex County District Attorney’s Office PSA Project, District Attorney Gerry Leone announced today.

Students Samantha Gray, Carly Gravallese and Matt Gravallese created a 60- second PSA video titled “I Respect Myself.” Nearly 1,500 students across Middlesex County voted in the contest to select the winning video from five finalists. View the winning video below.

“The students who submitted the winning PSA did a great job communicating a key theme of the contest – the importance of making healthy choices in relationships,” DA Leone said. “The winning video is creative and compelling, depicting the concerning phenomenon of ‘Sexting.’ The message of the video, focusing on the dangerous nature of sending photos of themselves or others, while encouraging teens to respect themselves, is one we often highlight in addressing this issue. I congratulate the students for their hard work and all the students who participated in this program.”

 

   

Ribbon-Chopping
June 21, 2012 — Price Chopper cut the ribbon marking the opening of the 129th store of the Schenectady, NY based family supermarket chain in their own own way this morning, using an axe right out of their logo that symbolizes the chopping of prices. June 20, 2012 — Family patriarch Neil Golub was on hand for the pre-opening celebration of the 129th store in the family supermarket chain  and for the announcement of the raising of $3,245 this evening at $5 per ticket (Price Chopper matched the first $1500) to benefit Project Just Because, Hopkinton Youth Soccer and Baypath Humane Society.

Although the building has been under construction for months now, the group has been largely low-key. But today, the company roared into the consciousness of the towns of Hopkinton and Upton with a robust response to a promotional campaign that benefitted the three charities listed above, introduced attendees to their store and their fine products, and introduced themselves to their potential new customers.

This comes on the heels of the announcement that Hopkinton Gulf is now a Sunoco Gas Station, which had a price reduction today that had drivers lining up for gas; and that the Downtown gas station will be a redemption center for Price Chopper AdvantEdge gas rewards.
