Much Ado About Laptops

School Committee Approves High School Initiative

by Muriel Kramer

June 15, 2012 — The School Committee voted unanimously last night to go forward with the 1:1 laptop for next year’s incoming freshman class having passed the threshold of 80% of the respondents willing to lease or provide a device for their child to use. Residents on hand at the meeting in disagreement with the decision spoke largely to concerns with expense and planning for the implementation of the program.

In prepared remarks, resident Jonathan Clark (photo) details his frustration with the program as outlined. “The fact of the matter is that integrating technology as an always-connected requirement should be an option.  To note there was no true way to opt-out of this program.  Should we choose the technology path, I suggest we make the most of our investment.  We should measure our investment.  We should be prepared to react to necessary changes based on these measurements.  We should hold those accountable should our investment fail.  I want to see a plan that contains all of these elements in detail.  Anyone worth their paycheck should be able to produce an enterprise deployment plan.  To date there is none….Specifically the current initiative is lacking in details and strength.  You continue to waffle calling it a “pilot” some days and an "initiative" the next.  … It’s bloated in expectations and lofty “feel good” goals. The current plan does not provide critical features like true BYOD and textbooks.  It does not contain any specific metrics to measure, modify and create accountability.  It does not address real life social issues with deploying technology, social networks and real time access to adolescents.  It does not provide basic functionality that all users need - such as backups.  It is not based on any strategy that I can make sense of.”

Rebecca Robak School Committee member asked about professional development for teachers to be ready for implementation of the program. Alyson Geary, Principal at Hopkinton High School (photo), responded that there is an ongoing course that fifteen teachers are going through now. “Our proposal is to have all our teachers go through that.” Additionally, the Department has a new technology coordinator that has been hired to facilitate the implementation and support for the new program.

Jean Bertschmann, School Committee member, spoke in favor of approving the program. “Number 1, you are not obligated to do this.” She pointed out that students are already using Moodle, so this is a platform that teachers and students are familiar with. She continued that teachers at the Middle School and High School are already teaching this way. Bertschmann did ask about students being able to link to printers and scanners at home as well as applications like Facebook and iTunes.  REST OF STORY...

Press Release:

1-1 Laptop Initiative Approved by School Committee

Hopkinton High School is pleased to announce that the Hopkinton School Committee unanimously approved moving forward with the 1-1 laptop initiative for the 9th graders at the high school next year at their meeting on Thursday, June 14th.  83% of parents in the incoming 9th grade class committed to either lease a laptop from the school or bring in their own device, which surpassed the 80% goal which was set by the administration.  Students who are not leasing a laptop from the school or bringing their own device, will have access to a school owned laptop to use during the school day.  The class of 2016 will participate in the program throughout their 4 years of high school.  The participation of future classes in the program will depend on parent support and the results of the program in the upcoming year.  For more information about this please see the 1-1 Initiative Website, linked to the Hopkinton High School home page at: www.hopkinton.k12.ma.us/high

The One That Got Away

June 15, 2012 — The photographer stepped out of Mangia Pizza and onto the crosswalk across Walcott Street to be surprised by the van above moving toward him with the driver looking in the opposite direction. A yell and a gesture toward the sign convinced the driver to back up and go in the other direction. The photos below were also taken by happenstance, causing us to wonder how many violations occur otherwise. One bronze-colored Taurus with the plate beginning with 115 came zipping out after these were taken, but the photographer's camera was not at the ready. Neighbors are complaining that the vehicles blatantly violate the Do Not Enter sign at A Street and head the wrong way to avoid the long wait at the light.

THREE LOCAL BOYS RECEIVE EAGLE SCOUT AWARD at TRIPLE EAGLE COURT OF HONOR

June 13, 2012 —Three lifelong friends and Boy Scouts of Troop 4 Hopkinton received their official Eagle Scout Awards at a combined ceremony, on Sunday, June 10, 2012. The troop is very excited and proud to announce that (from left in photo) Andrew T. Dawson, Nathanial S. Langh, and John R. Barnes, were awarded this distinction in a Triple Eagle Scout Ceremony, at The Hayes Lodge, Hopkinton YMCA, on the afternoon of June 10, 2012.

These three young men, who go by Drew, Nate, and J.R. respectively, have progressed the 7 years through the ranks in Troop 4 together, gone on many notable trips, and helped each other with their Eagle Scout Leadership Service Projects. In addition to the service project, in which scout and volunteer time can total several hundred hours, they each had to earn 21 merit badges and serve as leaders in their troop.

The three also attended the once-in-a-lifetime trip to the National Scout Jamboree (NSJ), in the summer of 2010, at Fort A.P Hill, an active U.S. Army Base in rural Virginia. This was especially noteworthy, being the final time the NSJ was to be held at this location. The event also commemorated the 100 birthday of Boy Scouting in America.

Prior to their involvement in scouting, all three boys participated in the AASBD, or All-American Soap Box Derby, also called the "Gravity Grand Prix", in which young competitors construct, tune, and compete in downhill human-sized car races, free of any motors, and try to beat other drivers and the clock. All three boys participated in "rallies" all over New England states and further, and all three competed at the national championships, held every summer in Akron, Ohio, at the AASBD Headquarters.

All three boys have Eagle Scouts as fathers, wonderful supportive and multi-tasking mothers, and other Eagle Scouts in the family heritage, such as uncles, grandfathers, etc. The goal of The Eagle Scout Rank and its traditions, values, and character are alive and prospering in these families, and with these three Eagle Scout Award recipients.

A Happy Surviving Egg

June 16, 2012 — This afternoon, in the Hopkins School gym, winning teams from the fifth grade classes competed in a historic event. This was the 10th year of the competition at Hopkins. Each team assembled a contraption with everyday materials like cardboard, tape and bubble wrap. These contraptions (with an egg inside) are then released from a hydraulic lift in the gym. The goal is to have an “unscrambled” egg when the egg is removed from the packaging after hitting the ground.

The winning contraption with a very happy surviving egg is pictured above.

Team winners were Aidan Busconi, Natalie Calkins, Ally Holmes and Dan Sinacole.
