Eighth Grade Girls Softball Ends Season on Positive Note

June 11, 2012 — The team was 12-1-2. Almost a perfect season. Outscoring other teams 4:1. That was not the best part though.
The best part was off the field, the team raised $360 for the autism group, East Coast Jumbos & autism awareness. The girls set up shop in front of Hopkinton drug, and also asked family members to purchase car magnets in the shape of a ribbon promoting Autism awareness. The girls learned how lucky they are to be able to to play a sport they love every day. They also learned that athletics are really important but, come after school, family, and special needs; and they gave up some of their personal time, in efforts to help out this extra special group of kids. Above, players pose with coach Rick LeBalnc, grey shirt, and coach Ray LeBlanc, who accepted the gift on behalf of the East Coast Jumbos.

Tech Team Rescues 20 Year-old in Ashland Quarry Cliff Fall
Several towns participate in effort

June 10, 2012 — A call that came in to Ashland Police at 2:39 pm Sunday from friends led to the discovery of a 20 year-old at the quarry at Aggragate Industries in Ashland following a 15-20 foot fall from the side of the quarry onto some rocks, which rendered him unconscious. Firefighters arrived at the victim's side at 3:33 pm, and assessed the young man's vital signs to be stable. Then the Tech Team from Fire District 14 was activated, putting real world and simulated practical experience in extricating people from dangerous conditions to the test.  Firefighters pulled the patient up the cliff while other firefighters bushwacked a trail with chainsaws to a home on Olive Street for the fastest way to an ambulance. Below, Hopkinton Firefighter Kaz Piorkowski talks about the use of ropes and the difficulty of reaching the victim in the rockey terrain, loosened by years of excavation.
Ashland Police Public Information Officer Lt. David Iarussi said that the quarry has about 20 more years before the property will be transferred to the town and included as part of the Ashland Reservoir to be incorporated into that park. See the quarrry and hear Lt. Iarussi talk on video here.

Ongoing Rescue

June 10, 2012 — Several towns are on scene and in the woods in Ashland at Aggragate Industries, commonly referred to as Tri-Mount, an asphalt plant on Spring Street in Ashland where a large quarry is located, one that is not visible from the street. Police are guarding the entrance to the scene and are mum on the circumstances of how a 20 year-old male fell 15-20 feet, hitting his shoulder and his head. Firefighters first located the patient at 3:33 pm this afternoon, and are just now at 4:32 pm determinig if trail-blazing with chainsaws would be the best way to extricate the patient in a stokes stretcher, one often used for crane or helicopter rescues. First responders said the patient suffered a concussion. More on this later, when authorities make information available.

Who is the Victim in Landman Debacle?

Editor:
The parting-of-the-ways between Dr. Landman and the Hopkinton School Committee has all the makings of a childish high school break-up...."It's not you, it's me." While we may have accepted such a silly excuse when we were 16, we shouldn't have to accept it now. The community, as well as the employees of our school system, deserve more information.
I have been in contact with the School Committee directly regarding my concerns over Landman's "resignation" and how poorly they have handled it. Was he fired or did he quit? Why was it so abrupt and so soon after an election? If he did quit, then why the $105k good-bye gift? I have grown increasingly frustrated with their generic, "cut and paste" answers. I eagerly watched last night's School Committee meeting hoping to get answers and heard many fellow residents express their heartfelt concerns. While I didn't expect the committee to respond to the comments during the meeting, I wanted them to give some sort of timeframe as to when they would. They did not. I can't help but think of a quote from one of our favorite movies, Elf. "You sit on a throne of lies."
The School Committee keeps hiding Dr. Landman (and themselves) behind a shroud of "privacy" as if he is some sort of victim. Yet, when he is the one walking away with our money, I can only wonder who the real victim is. While I realize some information can not be disclosed, the taxpayers of Hopkinton deserve better answers. Once they learn to stay out of our wallets, we'll stay out of their business.
Sincerely,
Linda Lane
