HOPKINTON 300^TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION

COMMEMORATIVE QUILT PLANNING

On Wednesday, May 16 at 7:00 pm, there will be a meeting at the Hopkinton Historical Society Building, 168 Hayden Rowe, to begin planning for a quilt to commemorate Hopkinton’s 300^th Anniversary. A Steering Committee will be formed to facilitate the design, creation, and installation of the quilt. After the 300^th Anniversary celebrations conclude, the quilt will be donated to the town and hung on permanent display in the Historical Society Building.

All interested members of the community are encouraged to attend and contribute suggestions for themes, events, locations of historical significance to the first 300 years of Hopkinton’s history. Questions and suggestions can be sent in advance of the meeting to Jean Bertschmann at jeanber65@hotmail.com, or by calling 508.435.5195.

Hopkinton Deputy Fire Chief Steven Slaman cautions that in several fires across the state bark mulch has been a contributing factor. He cautions having bark mulch no closer than 18 inches from your home. The National Fire Protection Association, he says, goes even further. Read their link here.

The 9th Annual Sharon Timlin Memorial Event to Cure ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease) scheduled for Sunday, June 10, 2012 at Hopkinton High School. Start time for 5K is 8:30 AM. In addition to 5K, event will feature professionally timed kid’s 1 mile run for 7 – 10 year olds, Huge family fun day, raffles, silent auction, music, food and more. DAVID SPENGLER HONORS HIS LATE WIFE BY SUPPORTING THE

MASS. BREAST CANCER COALITION’S AGAINST THE TIDE EVENT

This is the second year that Hopkinton resident David Spengler will be participating in the Massachusetts Breast Cancer Coalition’s (MBCC) Against the Tide swim, walk, run, kayak fundraising event without his beloved wife Carol. She passed away on December 18, 2010 after a six-year battle with breast cancer.

Whether Carol Spengler was participating in the Against the Tide walk or volunteering to help the event run smoothly, she was a dedicated supporter of MBCC because of their goal of breast cancer prevention.

David explained, "If Carol could do something to make life better for another person, then she would do it. That is how she lived her life. In loving memory of my wonderful and loving wife Carol, I will carry on her mission of supporting MBCC. Against the Tide meant a great deal to her, and this year, I will be leading the ‘Carol Spengler Team.’ I plan on participating in the walk portion of the event. Others are welcome to join our team, and they are encouraged to participate in whatever component of the event they would like."

MBCC’s 20th anniversary of its statewide Against the Tide event includes a 1-mile swim, 2-mile kayak, 3-mile walk, 5K run, and 10K run to benefit MBCC. Participants may register in one or more of the components of the morning event in any combination of their choice. New in 2012 is an optional Aquathlon, which consists of the 1-mile swim immediately followed by your choice of the 5K or 10K run. New York City Woman Runs Boston Marathon to Benefit Hopkinton Charity

While sports fans are invested in the Boston/New York rivalry, New York City resident Julia Savacool recently connected the two regions by running the Boston Marathon to raise funds and awareness for Hopkinton-based animal charity Greyhound Friends. Julia braved the warm weather and finished the Marathon in under 4:30 while raising an expected $5,000 for Greyhound Friends. Julia adopted her Greyhound named Blaze from Greyhound Friends in 2010.

Greyhound Friends, a small non-profit organization dedicated to saving racetrack greyhounds and placing them in responsible loving homes, was awarded a number in the Boston Marathon for the first time thanks to the Town of Hopkinton and the Boston Athletic Association Charity Program.

Pulte Goes Before Design/Review Board

April 17, 2012 — Pulte Homes, which is planning to build 270 owned dwellings on Legacy Farms South, appeared before the Hopkinton Design Review Board again this evening to discuss, among other things, the implementation of changes the board suggested at their last meeting. The board was especially pleased with the landscape design meant to mitigate the visual impact on vehicles driving on Clinton Street as well as throughout the neighborhood. In addition, Pulte adopted lighting similar to that on Hopkinton Common intended to shine downward only.

FRANK SIVO ANNOUNCEMENT FOR SCHOOL COMMITTEE

I am pleased to announce my candidacy for the Hopkinton School Committee. My wife Eve and I have made Hopkinton our home for 17 years. We have four children in the Hopkinton public schools: three at Hopkins and one in the Middle School. I have been active in our community, coaching Little League, serving on the Special Education Advisory Council (SPEAC), and most recently serving on the Elementary Building Criteria Working Group.

My education includes BS and MS degrees in Mechanical Engineering and an MBA. Professionally, I lead strategic planning processes and the operational excellence program at Genzyme. Previously, I worked as a management consultant serving a wide range of private and public sector clients on issues related to strategy, leadership, operations, and technology.

Providing an excellent education to our children is a core responsibility of the community. I will use my 26 years of management experience to help us meet that responsibility while maintaining fiscal discipline.

Specifically, I will make sure that the school district’s strategic plan appropriately fosters continuous improvement balanced with the will of the community in the current economic environment. I will ensure that thoughtful, fact-based, transparent, and fiscally responsible decisions are consistently made.

With respect to the current challenges involving the Elementary school buildings, I am opposed to districting of our schools as a solution. While I acknowledge that we must address several needs at both the Center and Elmwood schools, I do not have a preferred solution. Instead, I support a rigorous, deliberate, and objective process that will identify the best solution considerate of total cost.

Our town faces important decisions that will affect our community for years to come. I will champion creative solutions that provide the best value for our money.

On Monday, April 23rd, 7:00-8:00 pm Jean Vazza of Hopkinton Youth Services will facilitate a community-minded discussion on "Teens and the Use of Drugs and Alcohol" at the Hopkinton Public Library. Topics of focus for this small group-style discussion include how to talk openly to teens about substance use, identifying signs of teen substance use, age of onset for using, effects that drugs and alcohol have on adolescents' physical and emotional well-being, parenting/caretaker suggestions and guidelines and local/community resources and support.As this topic affects the whole system of community, all participants are welcome to contribute their perspectives, suggestions and observations. This program is free and open to the public.

WILLIAM REINERTSON CHARGED WITH TAX FRAUD

BOSTON - April 17, 2012 - A Hopkinton man was charged in federal court with filing false tax returns which claimed large refunds to which he was not entitled.

William A. Reinertson, 51, of laurel Canyon Drive, owner of RLC Landscape Design was charged in an Indictment with four counts of filing false tax returns for tax years 2005 through 2008. The Indictment alleges that Reinertson and his wife filed joint returns and submitted false W-2s claiming that the landscaping and construction businesses Reinertson operated withheld federal income tax from wages paid to each of them and claimed they were entitled to tax refunds. The Indictment alleges that no withholdings had been made and no sums were paid over to the IRS, although he allegedly claimed withholdings totaling more than $227,000 . If convicted, Reinertson faces up to three years in prison to be followed by one year of supervised release and a $250,000 fine.

United States Attorney Carmen M. Ortiz and William Offord, Special Agent in Charge of the Internal Revenue Services Criminal Investigation in Boston made the announcement today. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Sandra S. Bower of Ortiz’s Economic Crimes Unit.

HOPKINTON REPUBLICAN TOWN COMMITTEE ANNOUNCES CAUCUS RESULTS

Hopkinton Republicans in their caucus on April 13^th nominated a mixture of experienced town office holders and new volunteers for town government positions. The only contested seats for the May 21^st town election are School Committee and Library Board (expired term 2014).

Frank Sivo is running for the School Committee. Sivo has four children in the Hopkinton schools. He has been active in our community, coaching Little League, serving on the Special Education Advisory Council (SPEAC), and most recently serving on the Elementary Building Criteria Working Group. He was opposed to districting as a solution to the current challenges involving the Elementary school buildings. June Harris is running again for Library Board (expired term 2014). Last May, Harris received the second highest vote total for the five Library Board seats but her election was not allowed because the tie vote and poor wording of the ballot. The Selectmen appointed her to fill the seat until this upcoming May election. She is passionate in her support of the library and wants to continue her efforts. Harris, an attorney, is currently serving on the newly formed town Library Board and previously served on a library building committee. June and her husband Dick Temple have two sons.

In the uncontested ballot positions, the top of the Republican slate is headed by long-time volunteer and incumbent Selectman Michelle Gates who is seeking a second term.

Robert Dobinski is running for reelection to the Parks and Recreation Commission. Dan Terry, a new comer to elected politics, is also running for an open seat on the Parks and Recreation Commission. Brian O’Keefe, another new comer to elected politics, is running to fill out the term on the Parks and Recreation Commission that he was appointed to last summer. O’Keefe has been involved in Hopkinton’s soccer organizations and in building the artificial turf fields on Fruit Street.

Town government veteran Tom Garabedian is running for reelection to Commissioner of Trust Funds.

Renee Gilson is running for her third five year term on Housing Authority. Gilson in her first term was one of the members that oversaw major improvements to the Davis Road facilities and recently was involved in the building of 12 new housing units.

Paul Winshman is running for election for an open seat on the Board of Health. Winshman is the owner of Zio’s Bistro in Hopkinton and several other area restaurants.

Current Planning Board Chairman Ken Weismantel is running for reelection to the Planning Board. In his first bid for public office, Matt Wade is also running for an open seat on the Planning Board.

The Hopkinton Republican Town Committee is pleased to nominate and support this slate of qualified candidates for local elected office. The town election is Monday, May 21^st.

The Republican caucus was open to both registered Republicans and unenrolled voters. The Hopkinton Republican Town Committee actively supports our nominated candidates with signs, donations, campaign volunteers and mentoring. 8:29 pm Sgt. Michael Sutton and Officer William Burchard responded to Sandy Beach after receiving reports of one or more bonfires. Some of the individuals arrived in vehicles and were sent home with instructions to have their parents call the station. Officer Burchard waited with another individual while parents arrived with a ride.

7:08 pm A Priscilla Road caller reported concern for an injured swan. The Animal Control Officer will be speaking with the individual.

7:05 pm Three units responded and removed two sophomores from the roof of Elmwood School.

5:21 pm Officer William Burchard assisted a disabled Motor vehicle on West Main Street.

4:11 pm Officer Philip Powers noted that a reported DMV was someone just using a mailbox.

12:54 pm An individual reported the theft of a skateboard to Officer Thomas Griffin.

12:12 pm Officer William Burchard investigated a hit and run accident on Hayden Rowe Street.

12:03 pm Officer Matthew McNeil investigated a motor vehicle accident on Chestnut Street in which there was no personal injury.

9:39 pm A Mayhew Street 17 year-old who had been drinking was put into protective custody after his mother requested police assistance via 911.

9:00 pm Westborough Police requested assistance in locating a vehicle that knocked down, and then ran over a pole in their down. GOA.

5:30 pm An individual called to complain that while jogging on Saddle Hill Road, a dog a dog chased him onto the country club property. The individual, who said this has happened a few times, was advised to also contact the Animal Control Officer.

4:12 pm Officer Peter Booth spoke with an individual whose motor vehicle operation was complained about as speeding.

2:22 pm A caller complained of gunfire at the Fruit Street fields. The sound was determined to be coming from the Woodville Rod and Gun Club.

Hopkinton Woman Starts With Elite Women, Finishes 27th in Female Division*

April 16, 2012 — Hopkinton resident, 24 year-old Lauren Philbrook, above, who qualified for Boston by her times in Olympic Qualifying Trials, missed her personal best by a few minutes today, 2:59:56, but still finished 27th in the Female Division.
