Consul General of Greece delivers Winners Olive Wreaths to

Boston Athletic Association for 116th Running of The Boston Marathon

Boston, MA (April 11, 2012) - In a festive ceremony attended by over 100 people on Tuesday, April 10, at the Greek Consulate on Beacon Hill, the Honorable Consul General of Greece, Ilias Fotopoulos presented four olive branch wreaths to the Boston Athletic Association, which will be used to crown the winners of this coming Monday’s 116th running of the Boston Marathon. The olive branch wreaths were grown, cut, and plaited into winners’ wreaths in Greece, and delivered as a gift from the country of Greece, the country where the first marathon originated, specifically for the Boston Marathon, upholding a long tradition of collaboration and respect between the organizers of the Boston Marathon and the people of Greece.

Present at the ceremony were the host Consul General of Greece, Mr. Ilias Fotopoulos, His Eminence Methodios Metropolitan of Boston, the President of the Boston Athletic Association, Mrs. Joann E. Flaminio and the Executive Director, Mr. Thomas Grilk, the former Senator Mr. Leonidas Raptakis, the President of the Alpha Omega Council, Mr. Nicholas Kourtis and the board of trustees, the Greek-American businessmen, Mr. Bill Galatis and Mr. Peter Kostopoulos, Mr. Archie D. Typadis, Esq., Mr. Tim Kilduff, Director 26.2 Foundation, the John Hancock Company Executives, Mr. Rob Friedman and Mrs. Louise Santosuosso, the Marathon runner Sara Mae Berman, who ran the 1972 Boston Marathon, the first Marathon where women’s records could officially be reported and accepted, the Director of Athletics at Suffolk University, Mr. Jim Nelson, the curator of the Sports Museum of New England, Mr. Richard Johnson, the co-author of the book "Running with Pheidippides", Mr. Nick Tsiotos, the sports editor Boston Herald, Mr. Steven Bulpett, the President of the Federation of the Hellenic American Societies of New England, Mr. Karatzas, the New England Governor of the Panmacedonian Association USA, Mrs. Mitkonis, the President of the Medical and Dental Association of New England, Mr. Yanni Glavas, the Dean of the Diplomatic Consular Corps, Mr. Leonard Kopelman, other diplomats and distinguished guests.

The Boston Marathon began in 1897 following the great interest in Ancient Greek athletics and civilization that accompanied the rebirth in 1896 in Athens of the ancient Olympic Games, which had originally been held in Olympia, Greece from 776 BC to 394 AD. The modern Boston Marathon invokes the historical event of the 26 mile run by the Greek messenger Pheidippides from the battle plain of Marathon to Athens to announce the Greek victory over the invading Persian army. This Greek victory at Marathon is recognized as a critical historical event in the preservation of Greek civilization and its fledgling political system known as democracy, and the subsequent flowering of academics, philosophy, literature and theater that formed the basis for Western Civilization. Ancient Olympic winners were crowned with victors’ wreaths, and the Boston Marathon continues this ancient tradition now in the city often referred-to as the "Athens of America".  Contributed content.

Hopkinton Middle School Presents “Oliver!”

Players pay homage to Dickens through outreach

Brent Leibowitz (center) plays Oliver Twist in Hopkinton Middle School’s production of “Oliver!” April 27 to 29. With him are Courtney Forsmo, who plays Mrs. Bedwin, and Jake Rosenzweig, who plays Mr. Brownlow. Photo by Mike Rosenzweig.

This year marks the 200th birthday of Charles Dickens, whose book ‘Oliver Twist’ raised awareness about London’s notorious workhouses for poor children.

When Hopkinton Middle School students present “Oliver!,” the musical based on “Oliver Twist,” they will honor Dickens’ spirit through an effort to help Project Just Because, a Hopkinton-based charity that helps families in need.

“While the abuses of Dickens’ workhouses are gone from civilized nations, many in our own neighborhoods are still struggling because of the poor economy,” said Hallyann Gifford, the middle school drama teacher and the show’s director. “This show is a great opportunity to remind students and the audience that they too can make a difference in their communities, as Dickens did.”

A cast and crew of more than 100 students will present “Oliver!” on April, 27, 28 and 29 in the Hopkinton Middle School auditorium, 88 Hayden Rowe Street, Hopkinton. Admission will be discounted by $2 for anyone who donates school supplies for children in need served by Project Just Because.

Planning Board Moves EMC Rezoning Forward

April 9, 2012 — EMC Corporation, Hopkinton's largest property tax payer, went before the Planning Board this evening applying to rezone 14 acres of a 111 acre parcel from Agricultural to Industrial A in order to expand parking at their 176 South Street facility. The parcel would extend to Old Town Road, a paper road that runs parallel to Lakeshore Drive and connects to all of the roads off of Lakeshore.

The parcel is a small part of a larger parcel owned by EMC that has waterfront access to Lake Maspenock in three areas. The expanded parking would serve EMC's $52 million facility at 176 South Street, and would come to within 200' of residential properties at the ends of Amherst and Yale Roads.

Residents of the lake area were out in force this evening (above), mostly to voice objections to the changes in their neighborhood.

The Planning Board voted to recommend the change at Town Meeting in an article that will need a 2/3 majority to pass, as all zoning articles do. They stipulated that their recommendation would be contingent on the parking being on one level only. After the meeting, some residents vowed to oppose it regardless.

District Attorney Gerry Leone Press Conference Regarding Hopkinton Murder-Suicide

SERVICE GUIDE

Hopkinton Man Kills Wife, Self - DA

April 9, 2012 — According to Middlesex District Attorney Gerry Leone, who called him a well-liked and well-known Hopkinton resident, Todd Vogel (File photos), 43, shot and killed his wife, 40 year-old Laurie Levangie, and then himself, sometime since last night. The bodies were discovered this morning by a co-worker who then called police at 8:51 am. Mr. Leone, Hopkinton Chief of Police Rick Flannery and State Police Lt. Alan Hunt addressed the media that gathered across from the home at 141 Hayward Street, who had waited for more than two hours while the family of wife Laurie Levangie, who were out of state, was notified.

Mr. Leone said there was obvious evidence of a murder-suicide; gunshot wounds, the murder weapon, and an obvious nature of the cause of death. He said a firearm was the weapon, but did not specify the type or the number of shots fired.

Chief Flannery said there had been disturbance calls in the past at the residence, but nothing of that nature, referring to the domestic violence that ended in the loss of two lives.

Mr. Leone said that there was an inventory of weapons found in the home being taken this afternoon. Mr. Vogel was a collector of World War II tanks and other military hardware and often repaired and restored them for others.

He said the bodies were found near the side/rear exit from the house. The couple had been seen last evening, and today's investigation revealed that both bodies were in close proximity to one another. In answer to a reporter's question, he said they could not determine if Mrs. Levangie was fleeing her husband.
