Celebrating 4 Decades of Women Running Boston Seminar

Friday, April 13 at 7PM

Hopkinton High School Auditorium, 90 Hayden Rowe Street, Hopkinton, MA

Cost: $5 donation. Tickets: Available on-line at http://fastandfabulous.eventbrite.com/

HOPKINTON, MA (March 23, 2012) --- The Boston Athletic Association (BAA), the 26.2 Foundation and Hopkinton’s 300th Anniversary Celebration Committee are sponsoring an event to recognize and celebrate the 40th anniversary of women running the Boston Marathon on Friday, April 13, 7PM, at the Hopkinton High School Auditorium, 90 Hayden Rowe, Hopkinton, MA.

The host for the event is WBZ Anchor Lisa Hughes who will lead the discussion with several members of the Boston Marathon 1972 women’s team. Attendees will have the opportunity to meet and mingle with some of the pioneers of the Boston Marathon who led the way for the first official run by women in 1972.

“I am really looking forward to the upcoming events at Boston,” said Val Rogosheske, who ran officially in 1972.

Sara Mae Berman, who ran unofficially in 1969, 1970 and 1971, as well as officially in 1972, had this to say about the challenges faced by women runners during that time, “We are so far from those days when women running, or doing any sport where you could be seen visibly sweating, were treated as curiosities. Today's young women, who find fulfillment in sports, tend to take Title 9 for granted.”

The charge for admission is a $5 donation to benefit Dreamfar High School Marathon and tickets can be purchased on-line at http://fastandfabulous.eventbrite.com/

Seating is limited to 200, so early reservations are recommended. Reception and dessert to follow. Tickets: Available on-line at http://fastandfabulous.eventbrite.com/

Unicorn Sighting

April 8, 2012 — The office of the Boston Athletic Association at 1 Ash Street is having fun inching up its mascot, the unicorn, a little each day until the big race on Patriot's Day. According to legend, the unicorn was selected by the BAA 10 years before the first Boston Marathon, and three decades before the United States sent soldiers to France to fight in World War I. Those soldiers are personified by the Doughboy monument at Cookies Corner, the triangle next to the Start line.

Another Family on the Way

April 8, 2012 — This female Canada goose is nesting on the island in the middle of Ice House Pond today on top of a beaver half-lodge. It is the high point on the island that was swamped by rains last season, causing some readers, as well as a photographer, to wonder if the eggs could be brought to term after possibly being under water. They were brought to term, and hatched at least a half-dozen bright yellow, fluffy goslings. HopNews will attempt to follow this year's family, too. Last year, they only stayed a day after hatching.

This goose can be identified as a female, because of her behavior. She sits in the nest as the male draws the attention of interlopers, and keeps his distance from the nest, so as to not give away the female's location. He may eventually trade places with her when she needs to stretch her wings and bathe.

Spinning Wheel, Got to Go 'Round

April 7, 2012 — Like a well-designed Italian automobile, Hopkinton sculptor Michael Alfano's Running Wheel evokes motion, even while at a stop. But it does not have to stay at a standstill. The faux bronze resin and stainless steel piece can be spun by its admirers so that all 26 legs, one for each mile of a world-class marathon, move in a circular motion. Mr. Alfano, who was dressing up the piece after this photo was taken today in front of Hopkinton Library, said that it is available for purchase in bronze. Check out his website.

DEBORAH THOMAS WITHDRAWS FROM HOPKINTON BOARD OF SELECTMEN RACE

In an email press release through Hopkinton Republican Town Committee Chair Ken Weismantel, Republican Selectman candidate Deb Thomas has officially withdrawn from the race for a seat on the Board Selectmen. Mr. Weismantel cites other commitments as her reason.

This ends any doubt of her possibly withdrawing that began following the entry of Republican Michelle Gates into the race for reelection to her seat as an incumbent, and heated up this week after it became clear that Mrs. Thomas did not turn in her nomination papers.

What had been a three-way race for two seats for a while might have discouraged others from joining in and challenging Mrs. Gates, Mrs. Thomas, and unenrolled Todd Cestari, who is also running for reelection to the board. However, the race is now between two people who could be challenged by a Democrat voted at their caucus, a Republican voted at their caucus, or by someone who wages a sticker campaign.

School Committee to Hold Off on Three Articles Until Fall STM

by Muriel Kramer

April 6, 2012 — The School Committee last night accepted gifts from the Hopkinton Boosters that included a new solar powered baseball score board, safety fencing along field 5 and new wind screens for the tennis courts. Mike Farrell, President of Hopkinton Boosters, was on hand with Athletic Director Eric Karjel to present to the committee. Farrell credited an enthusiastic group of volunteers that help make donations of this kind possible. “The Boosters Board puts in a lot of hours to raise the money to do these kinds of things. We try to spread it out over all sports. Beyond the Board there are a lot of volunteers that help make this happen.”

School Committee Chair, Jean Bertschmann, commented that the donations over the years have really made a big difference providing for things we couldn’t otherwise fund. “This is a tremendous benefit to us.” For his part Karjel noted that the support from the Boosters was notable because the support is spread across all sports, men and women’s teams, and inclusive of equipment and maintenance; thereby, strengthening the entire program not any individual sports.

Superintendent of Schools Dr. Jonathan Landman announced that a new Elementary School Principal has been hired to replace Elmwood School Principal Ilene Silver who is retiring after this year. “I am delighted to announce that I have offered, and Dave Ljungberg has accepted the position of Principal of the Elmwood Elementary School. We have the privilege of knowing Mr. Ljungberg well. In the past two years, in his role as Assistant Principal at the Hopkins and Elmwood Schools, Mr. Ljungberg has won the admiration and appreciation of Hopkinton faculty, parents, administrators and students through his soft-spoken, thoughtful, and caring leadership… Mr. Ljungberg has a deep appreciation for the strengths of the Elmwood School, and some great ideas about how to support continued excellence and growth in the years ahead.”

Assistant Superintendent of Schools Dr Mary Ann DeMello provided an update for the Elementary School Building Criteria Working Group (CWG) that she will chair; this group is tasked with developing the criteria that will be used for the future project or projects to address the needs at Center and Elmwood Schools. Members of the committee are: DeMello, Greg Martineau (Elementary School Principal), Pamela Pendelton (Teacher), Ken Clark (District Safety), Erika Maurer (SPEAC), Tara Sanda (Educate Hopkinton), Ben Chirco (Ballot Question Committee), Pat Baratta (Council on Aging), Trina Macchi (Realtor), Tom Nealon (Chamber of Commerce), Laura Connolly (Sustainable Green Comm.), Frank Sivo (community member), Gregory Denon (community member), Ron Foisy (community member), and Kim Brennan (community member).

All of the meetings of the CWG are open to the public and are bound by the Open Meeting Law.  Future meetings are scheduled for 4/24, 5/1, & 5/14 (if necessary additional meetings may be held on 5/22 & 5/29).  All meetings will run from 6:30-8 pm in the MS Library. The group will present its findings to the School Committee on June 7th.

The School Committee also discussed the Town’s new draft Finance Policy that had not been formally shared with the School Committee but rather discovered on the Town’s website by member Nancy Alvarez Burdick. The latest draft revision (revision 4) is dated September 27, 2011. Dr. Landman indicated that the policy was being drafted in part to help strengthen the Town’s bond rating. Landman indicated areas of possible concern including the apparent lack of flexibility and areas within the policy that needed clarification specifically concerning the School Department. School Committee member Troy Mick reacted strongly noting that the fact that the School Committee hadn’t been directly included in the process is unacceptable. The policy was first drafted in 2010. “We need to send this to counsel for legal review.” He also indicated frustration in not discussing the policy and developing a strategy before Landman and Director of Finance for the Schools Ralph Dumas met with Town Manager Norman Khumalo to provide feedback on the policy. “It would have been good to have a collective strategy before meeting to provide feedback…This needs to be on a future agenda.”

Bertschmann also expressed frustration. “Globally, I’m very concerned with the process; I feel like we are already six months behind. We need to take time to carefully review it…My concern is that we’re well into a process we didn’t even know was underway.” This will be addressed further at the Committee’s meeting April 26th.

Looking ahead to Annual Town Meeting and Annual Town Election, the Committee agreed to hold off on three articles that will necessitate ballot action at the request of the Board of Selectmen. The Board suggested holding off on the Elmwood School roof, the Center School windows and the Elementary School feasibility study until a Special Town Meeting in the fall which would be scheduled to utilize the national election for ballot questions. The Committee noted that waiting would not negatively impact the schedule for repairs; the roof and the windows could not be done this summer anyway due to the timeline involved in the procurement process. Additionally, not all the building study data is finalized that the town is hoping to use to frame a comprehensive approach for the future; that data will or should be completely available to support a fall Special Town Meeting.

Meet the Library's Invitational Runners

For the first time in its 117 year history, four local runners are running the Boston Marathon to raise money to support the immediate and future needs of Hopkinton Public Library. Peggy Shaw and Paul Newman will run the 2012 Boston Marathon on April 16 to raise money to support Hopkinton Public Library Foundation, Inc.’s mission of expanding and improving Hopkinton Public Library. Sundar Sivaraman and John Ralston are running the 2012 Boston Marathon in support of the Friends of Hopkinton Library.

Come meet the Library’s runners during HAA’s Marathon Exhibit at Hopkinton Public Library during the weekend of April 14th-15th. The Exhibit will be open on Saturday, April 14, between the hours of 10AM – 4PM, and Sunday April 15, from 12 noon – 4PM.

Both the Library Foundation and the Friends of the Library provide financial support to enhance, but not replace the library’s budget. Hopkinton Public Library Foundation, Inc. was formed in 2011 to raise private funds to address long-term library needs, including the proposed expansion and state-of the-art renovation of the library.

The Friends of the Library is a non-profit, membership organization that generously supports the immediate needs of the library, such as purchasing new shelving in adult and children’s areas, museum passes, a multi-media system and sponsorship of various programs. The Friends of the Library conducts fundraising through book sales and its annual apple crisp sale at PolyArts.

All contributions to the Hopkinton Public Library Foundation, Inc. and Friends of the Hopkinton Library are tax-deductible under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.

Brick to be Repointed

April 5, 2012 — Contractor Campbell Construction is scheduled to start putting up scaffolding today/tomorrow at Town Hall. While they are putting the scaffolding up the side entrance should be utilized as an emergency exit only (a couple days at the most). We'll be directing pedestrian traffic from the parking lot to use the basement entrance (front entrance also but not preferred due to vehicular traffic) during this time. Once the scaffolding is up, the side entrance can be used but to maximize safety we'll still be asking folks to use the back entrance mainly. Much safer to direct as many folks away from that entrance for a the 4-6 week period the scaffolding will be up.

There existing entrance to the parking lot will remain open and there will be no impact foot traffic for night meetings at town hall.

For those department heads outside of Town Hall please forward this to your staff.

Marlborough Resident Victim of Fatal Crash on Route 290 in Boylston

April 5, 2012 — At 1:55 a.m. today, a state trooper assigned to the Holden Barracks reported that his cruiser became disabled after he struck debris in the roadway on Route 290 eastbound, prior to Exit 24, in Boylston. While investigating the source of the debris, Trooper Mathew Moran observed a gray 2006 Toyota Matrix that had previously gone into the wooded median. Trooper Moran observed a lone male occupant in the car who had suffered fatal injuries.

Preliminary investigation indicates that the victim’s vehicle veered out of the travel lane and struck the beginning of a segment of guardrail, causing the end of the guardrail to impact the vehicle.

The victim is identified as James S. Ricciuti, 48, of Marlborough.

The facts and circumstances of the crash, including what caused Mr. Ricciuti to drive off the road and the exact time of the crash, remain under investigation by Troop C of the Massachusetts State Police with the assistance of the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section, the State Police Crime Scene Services Section, and the Worcester County State Police Detective Unit. Troopers were also assisted on-scene by the Boylston Fire Department and the Massachusetts Department of Transportation’s Highway Department.

Artwork to be Donated at Vets' Breakfast

The Womens Club is sponsoring/donating the 9:00 am Vets Breakfast on Friday, April 6, 2012. Yvette Madany will attend, and donate to the Vets some artwork of the late Bob McGraw (File photo).

Bob left us 11 July 2008. He was a prominent local artist. He can be seen in the Vets Photo Gallery in a 1943 pic with his Boeing Stearman PT-17. During WWII he was with the Eleventh (Army) Air Force at Elmendorf Field near Anchorage, Alaska. About 2000 miles to the west, (and 250 miles from the Siberian coastline) the Japanese occupied Attu and Kiska Islands in the Aleutians -- the only campaign fought on USA soil. The battle was 11 - 30 May 1943.
