Charged With OUI Liquor
March 21, 2012 — Officer Peter Booth responded to a cell caller reporting a driver all over the road heading east on West Main Street. He caught up with the driver and pulled her over at 35 Main Street and conducted sobriety tests in the driveway of that address. He stopped the tests and proceeded to place the driver in handcuffs, but she tried to run away, according to witnesses. One witness said Officer Booth tackled her to the ground. Above Officer Peter Booth and Sgt. Michael Sutton pulled her off of the ground and are placing her in the cruiser. A three-vehicle collision took place at that location during the motor vehicle stop. One of those vehicles is below.

Katherine N. Clooney, 69
Katherine N. Clooney, 69, died Tuesday March 21, 2012 at home after a long illness. She was the wife of Michael Clooney, to whom she was married for 42 years. Born in Somerville, she was the daughter of the late Cornelius J. and Nora (Hines) Sullivan.
She was a graduate of St. Clement's High School in Somerville and Fisher Junior College. She ran the housing office at Harvard University for eight years and was a librarian in the Hopkinton school system for 25 years. She enjoyed sailing, camping, long walks and the beach and was especially fond of spending time with her large, extended family.
In addition to her husand, she leaves her daughter Nora Clooney of Cambridge and her son David Clooney and his wife Amber of Amherst. She also leaves her sisters Mary Brown of Walpole and Joan Sullivan of North Brookfield, and her brothers Daniel Sullivan of Hudson and Thomas Sullivan of Newburyport. She is pre-deceased by her brothers Cornelius and John Sullivan.
The funeral will be held Saturday, March 24 at 9:00 a.m. from the Callanan Cronin Funeral Home, 34 Church Street. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. in St. John the Evangelist Church, 20 Church Street. Calling hours at the funeral home are Friday, March 23 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Coursework addressed contemporary concepts of management and leadership relevant to the responsibilities of first line supervisors in a modern criminal justice agency. The corned beef came from TJ’s, and the Senior Center cooks and volunteers finished preparing and serving the rest of the meal—baked ham, over 50 lbs each of potatoes and carrots, rolls, and dozens of cabbages! This Irish feast fed about 130 people and believe me, nobody went home hungry. Thanks to everyone who volunteered for this great special event; they did an AWESOME job!
While people were enjoying their meal, they were entertained by a wonderful St. Patrick’s Day show. John Guido was back again, playing all kinds of Irish songs on his keyboard, as well as many requests such as “Old Time Rock and Roll.” The dance floor was open and boy, did people take advantage of it!

March 20, 2012 — Selectmen heard from John Robertson, Director of the Legislative Division of the Massachusetts Municipal Association, who presented an award (above) to the Town of Hopkinton for the 3rd Best Town Report in the contest for towns over 12,500. Administrative Assistant Geri Holland was credited for pulling all of the elements of the report together, and was asked by Selectman Brian Herr if she would take that task with her following her transition to the Town Clerk's office. Town Manager Norman Khumalo answered that she would be.
Terry Land The Selectmen pondered the 204-acre Terry property and the responses from town boards and departments regarding the Selectmen's request that they weigh in on the possibility of the town exercising its right of first refusal for the land, because it was listed as forestry land, and has received tax breaks. Although the Sustainable Green Committee considered it for a solar farm, Chairman Andy Boyce was on hand to say that there were better parcels to consider. Superintendent of Schools Dr. Jonathan Landman was on present to say that after consideration, the school department has no "immediate interest." Planning Board Chairman Ken Weismantel weighed in and recommended commercial development for the property. Despite pleas from Selectman Brian Herr and Terry Attorney Douglas Resnick to vote to declare the town was not interested in purchasing the property so the $3 million sale could move forward, Chairman Todd Cestari said that this evening was to get the get the process before the public. The Selectmen will discuss it again on April 3, 2012, and likely vote to not exercise its rights at that meeting. Attorney Resnick objected, saying he wanted to express his client's disappointment, and offered arguments in support of his position. Chairman Cestari gave him the "stop" sign with the palm of his hand, saying that the town has 120 days to respond, and that another two weeks would be reasonable.
Marathon Stuff The "Who's Who" of the Boston Athletic Association was on hand to tell the Selectmen that not much had changed for this year's running of the B.A.A. Boston Marathon on Patriot's Day. The town will receive $81,000 as a non-expense related gift to the town from the B.A.A., a gift that was accepted this evening, as well as a $25,000 gift to the School Department. PerkinElmer and the Town of Hopkinton,
Massachusetts Bring ChargePoint EV Charging Services and Stations to
Public and Employees
PerkinElmer announced the installation of an electric vehicle (EV) charging station as part of a collaboration with the Town of Hopkinton to provide EV charging services to its employees and to the public.
The recently-unveiled ChargePoint® charging station, manufactured by Coulomb Technologies, was made available to PerkinElmer through Coulomb’s $37 million ChargePoint America Department of Energy program, and is part of Coulomb’s ChargePoint® Network. The unit allows for charging two vehicles simultaneously – with a vehicle charge expected to take approximately 4 to6 hours.
The installation was a result of a successful grant application by the Hopkinton Sustainable Green Committee, assisted by Dave Daltario, Town Engineer and Facilities Coordinator, from the Massachusetts Department of Energy Resources. The $200,000 grant program is part of a concerted effort by the Commonwealth to accelerate the market for electric vehicles and encourage the beginning of an electric vehicle supply station infrastructure to provide electricity to fuel these vehicles.
As part of its policy to strengthen public-private partnerships, the Town of Hopkinton approached local businesses to host the charging station. PerkinElmer volunteered to host the EVCS, pay for the installation, as well as pay for electricity costs for the next few years as part of the company's ongoing commitment to sustainable green programs. Mr. Brady has been playing St. Patrick's Day at Cornell's for decades. Mr. Cornell purchased the business and real estate on installments from his late father, Ed, 27 years ago. March 17, 2012 — The Annual Hopkinton Special Olympics vs. Hopkinton Police took place today at the Middle School Gym, and St. Patrick's Day was on many minds as Officer Pat O'Brien played a rendition of "Irish Eyes" into the loudspeakers from his smart phone. Both sides attributed the Hopkinton Police loss, despite gallant efforts from their teammates, to the sidelining of Officer Pat O'Brien following hip surgery. William J. Smith Jr., 85
He was employed by the Dennison Manufacturing Company for over 50 years and was also a taxi driver for Tommy's Taxi in Framingham. Bill served in the U.S. Navy as a proud veteran of World War II. He was on the USS Springfield. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and the Boston sports teams and was member of the Maspenock Rod and Gun Club. He was a loving father, a devoted husband and a friend to all who know him. His memory will be forever cherished.
He is survived by his five children, William S. Smith and his wife Carol of Auburn, Janet Hawkins of Milford, Gary Smith and his wife Barbara of Franklin, Mark Smith and his wife Haley of Milford and Paul Smith of Milford. He also leaves his sister Marianna Surrette of Southborough, six granchildren and several nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his brother Stephen Smith.
A committal of cremains with military honors will take place Thursday, March 22 at 11:00 a.m. in Evergreen Cemetery, Hopkinton. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Callanan Cronin Funeral Home, 34 Church Street, Hopkinton. |

Williams University in Bristol, R.I., in partnership with the New England
Association of Chiefs of Police, recently recognized Sergeant Joseph
Bennett of the Hopkinton, MA Police Department for the successful
completion of the “Command Training Series: First Line Supervisor Course,”
a two-week comprehensive training program for police supervisory
personnel.

C. Foster, 86, distinguished navy veteran, loving husband and
father, formerly of Holliston, MA., and Bear River, Nova Scotia, died
peacefully on March 15, 2012, in Hopkinton, MA., surrounded by his caring
family and his beloved and devoted wife, Clytie.
FRAMINGHAM/MILFORD - William J. Smith
Jr., 85, passed away March 13, 2012 at
the Westborough Nursing and Rehabilitation Center after a period of
declining health. His wife, Doris A. (Leland) Smith, died in
1999. Born in Framingham, he was the son of the late William and
Arlene (Brown) Smith.
