Highest Award
March 16, 2012 —
Twelve Cub Scouts from Pack 97 after having earned their Arrow
of Light, the highest award that can be received in Cub
Scouting. Pack 97's Blue & Gold ceremony was held last night
where the boys earned this award. An archer was present and shot
a symbolic arrow for each boy. Later, Boy Scouts from Troops 1 &
4 awarded the 12 graduating scouts neckerchiefs to wear as they
continue their journey in scouting. All 12 boys from Pack 97
will be joining one of the Boy Scout troops in Hopkinton.

Broken Down?
March 16, 2012 — This pickup came to the attention of the
photographer, who stopped to turn left into Bill's Pizza to
reverse direction
 and
then park on Main Street in front of the HopNews office. As the
photographer came to a stop in traffic to wait to turn left
while oncoming traffic passed, vehicles behind him, which would
ordinarily drive past on the right, were forced to wait also,
because the pickup truck is partially blocking the lane of
travel. It is also blocking the crosswalk, as well as the exit
from Church Street, and is in a no parking area.
The photographer took the photo after doing the turn-around,
stopping to ask the driver if he was broken down, and then
driving to the parking space, parking and exiting his vehicle to
shoot. The driver said he was not broken down, but was waiting
for someone, and did not move until the photographer started
shooting. In the photo above, the truck is stopped, and was for
the entire time.
Right? Wrong? There have been numerous complaints about the
safety of this intersection before this photo was shown. Discuss

Jeanne M. Sulfaro, 90
 HOPKINTON
- Jeanne M. Sulfaro, 90,
died Wednesday March 14, 2012 in Framingham. She was the
wife of the late Frank J. Sulfaro, who died in April 1995.
Born in Wakefield, she was the daughter of the late Michael and
Antonia (Dellegatto) Sulfaro. She was a 1941 graduate of
Hopkinton High School.
She is survived by her sons John and wife Brenda of Linwood,
Richard and wife Sandra of Hopkinton, and her daughter Donna
DeMeo and husband John of Kingston, NH. She also leaves 10
grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.
The funeral will be held Monday, March 19 at 9:00 a.m. from the
Callanan Cronin Funeral Home, 34 Church Street. A funeral
Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. in St. John the Evangelist
Church. Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery.
Calling hours at the funeral home are Sunday, March 18 from 2:00
p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Middle School Presents “Oliver!”
The Hopkinton Middle School Drama
Club will present the musical “Oliver!” on April, 27, 28 and 29
in the Hopkinton Middle School auditorium, 88 Hayden Rowe
Street, Hopkinton.
Based on the Charles Dickens classic
“Oliver Twist,” the musical depicts the adventures of the
orphaned Oliver -- including his hardships in the workhouse, his
adventures with a band of youthful pickpockets led by Fagin, and
his change of fortune when a long-lost relative finds him.
“Oliver!,” which first hit the stage in 1960 in London, includes
many well-loved songs, among them “Food, Glorious Food,”
“Consider Yourself,” “As Long as He Needs Me,” and “I’d Do
Anything.”
Showtimes are at 7 p.m. on Friday,
April 27 and Saturday, April 28 and at 2 p.m. on Sunday, April
29. Admission price is TBA. Advance tickets will be
available soon at the Middle School office, or at the door.

Pru Tunnel to be Shut Down Overnight Sunday-Monday to
Accommodate Permanent Power Restoration
 The
Massachusetts State Police have been notified that as part of
NStar’s process of restoring power in the Prudential Tunnel on
the Massachusetts Turnpike, work crews must disconnect the
generator currently providing power to the lights and
ventilation system, then re-splice the wires to the power grid.
We have been notified that there will be a complete loss of
ventilation and lighting during the switchover period because
both systems – the current temporary one and the permanent one –
cannot run simultaneously. Thus for safety reasons, State Police
will shut down the Turnpike in both directions at the tunnel
location. The switchover is currently scheduled for overnight
Sunday into Monday, beginning at midnight with targeted
completion time no later than 5 a.m. We will notify the public
of any change in the schedule.

The Prudential ramp will be closed to accommodate two
generators, which will supply electricity to Prudential
Tunnel and other establishments in the area. This will now
effectively shut down exit #22 completely as the Copley
ramp was closed at 1:15 p.m. this date. The Prudential ramp
will be shutdown for approximately 2 days.

SERVICES PROGRAM MARCH 26th
On Monday, March
26th, 7:00-8:00 pm Jean Vazza of Hopkinton Youth Services will
facilitate a community-minded discussion on "Teens and Mental
Health Awareness" at the Hopkinton Public Library. Topics
of focus for this small, group-style discussion include
awareness of mental health, signs, frequency and identification
of mental health disorders, how to discuss mental health issues
with teens, the importance of reducing stigma and community
resources. Participants are invited to contribute their
perspectives and suggestions.
This
program is free and open to the public. Advance

Michelle Gates Joins Selectmen's
Race
March 12, 2012 —
Selectman Michelle Gates has taken out nomination papers for
reelection to the Hopkinton Board of Selectman. Mrs. Gates is a
Republican.
Mrs. Gates
becomes one of three people who have taken out papers for the
two available seats on that board. She and Todd Cestari are up
for reelection, and Planning Board member Deborah Thomas, also a
Republican, has taken out nomination papers, too. Mr. Cestari is
unenrolled.
Submitting
completed Nomination Papers is one way to get on the ballot.
Another way to get on the ballot is to be elected at a party's
caucus.
Ms. Gates has for
a number of years served in a volunteer or elected capacity on a
number of boards and committees, including as the manager of the
Sunday Concerts on the Common, first as a member of Parks and
Recreation Commission for several years, and then as a
volunteer after becoming Selectman.

Invade Iran?
Some
presidential candidates are calling for military
action against Iran to destroy its nuclear
capability, which Iran claims is peaceful, but some
say is for weapons. President Obama says that
military action is premature, but is on the table,
while economic sanctions take hold.
Pundits are arguing that Israel may talk tough about
attacking Iran on their own, but that they would
suffer a "rain of rockets" from Hezbollah and other
anti-Israeli factions that lie in wait across their
borders. In addition, Israel could not repel a
military attack from Iran by itself, and any action
by it would drag its ally the United States into a
war, some say.
Meir Dagan, former chief of the Israeli intelligence
agency, Mossad, appeared on CBS and said that the
Iranian regime was "rational," and that a military
strike would not be a good idea at this time. He
said that Iran's willingness to negotiate amounts to
a "bazaar" mentality, and that they are positioning
themselves for greater oil profits.

POLL RESULTS
After reading the column on the left, HopNews
readers said "no" to the drumbeats of war with Iran,
at least for now, in the poll conducted during
today's daylight. 14 % said they want war now, 31 %
said "never" to war with Iran, and 55% want to wait
for more evidence or urgency.
The first two questions indicate that readers who
took part in the poll, 69% of them, would support
going to war with Iran if the right conditions
existed.

Trails Club Hikes Berry Acres/Terry Property
March 12, 2012 — On Sunday, the Hopkinton Trails club featured
the Terry land for a club hike. The 204-acre parcel, with its
vast wetlands, is under agreement for $3 million with local
entrepreneur Paul Mastroianni, who owns 77 West Main Street, and
has upgraded that property since purchasing it. The town has the
right of first refusal to purchase the land, because it has
enjoyed a tax benefit due to its agricultural designation.
However, only the Sustainable Green Committee has expressed an
interest in the land, for a possible solar energy farm. One
company has been speaking with a Hayden Rowe Street property
owner for consideration, too.
