Driver Who Fled Earlier Today Taken into Custody

March 11, 2012 — An individual who allegedly fled a State Police Motor Vehicle stop at around 12:30 pm today, triggering a manhunt by State and Hopkinton Police, which involved several officers, a canine unit, and a chopper from the Massachusetts State Police Air Wing, was taken into custody this evening at 7:33 pm.

Officer Matthew McNeil and Sgt. Michael Sutton placed 31 year-old Kevin Gonzalez of North Quincy Street in Brockton into custody following several reports from neighbors who had been made aware of the manhunt earlier in the day.

Described as an individual in jeans, covered in mud and looking disheveled with curly hair, he was reported by a resident to be at the corner of Pond and West Elm Streets. A foot pursuit ensued after he was spotted by police, and he was captured in the vicinity shortly afterward.

According to dispatcher Evan Brooks, the warrants on Mr. Gonzalez were for motor vehicle violations, but admitted the State Police may add more charges after today's incident (read stories below). Photo from afternoon manhunt.

Curious

March 11, 2012 — These turkey vultures, and others with them, cruised over the fire in Westborough today (below), apparently curious about the odor of smoke, like their human counterparts, who also gathered to watch.

Traveling Fire

March 11, 2012 — Hopkinton Firefighters, assisting Westborough, don their breathing apparatus prior to entering this multi-unit building at Homestead Drive in Westborough, where a fire that began in a shrub, according to a bystander, rose up the side of the building and entered the interior, scorching three apartments. While the firefighters were suiting up — the first alarm was sounded about 4:00 pm — the fire was moving through the walls, although the outside of the building in the photo above doesn't reveal that. Hopkinton firefighters cleared the scene at about 5:10 pm. Sign up for our Twitter to receive important updates and news as it happens.

Low Flight Pattern

March 11, 2012 — This low-flying Massachusetts State Police helicopter spent about two hours in the air assisting in the manhunt of a subject who fled  a traffic stop on West Elm Street from a State Police marked cruiser. The individual, who is known to police, left his wallet with identifying information, as well as a female passenger and a child, in the vehicle. He was allegedly driving without a license, and had outstanding warrants for his arrest. The hunt for the individual went on from about 12:30 pm -3:30 pm, when, because of the failure to locate him with infrared cameras on the ground and in the air, as well as a tracking dog (thumbnail), it was assumed he had left in an "escape" vehicle that he called, or that had been following him. HopNews Twitter followers were alerted of the manhunt as it happened.

Wellness Fair to Highlight Hopkinton’s Participation in First Lady Michelle Obama’s “Chefs Move to Schools” Program and Launch Student Recipe Contest

Chefs Andy Husbands and Chris Hart to Partner With Hopkinton School District Food Service to Bring New Dishes and Healthy Nutrition Messages to Hopkinton Students

HOPKINTON, MA  --( March 5, 2012) - On March 10, Chefs Andy Husbands and Chris Hart will be doing what they do best,  preparing two new menu items in a very unusual setting --- not in a restaurant, but in the kitchen of the Hopkinton High School cafeteria.  The chefs have agreed to partner with the Hopkinton School District to bring their culinary creativity to the school lunch program as part of the “Chefs Move to School” program, founded in May 2010 as an integral part of First Lady Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move! Initiative.  Their demo, at 12 pm in the HHS cafeteria, will kick-off a year-long partnership.

The premise of the Chefs Move to School program is that chefs have a unique ability to deliver healthy nutrition messages in a fun and appealing way.  The program pairs chefs with schools in their communities with the mission of collaboratively educating kids about food and proper nutrition to help improve the way children interact with food, from the cafeteria to the classroom.  The chefs will act as consultants to the Food Service Director, and as celebrity judges of a student recipe contest.

Hopkinton Public School Food Service Committee comprised of Food Service Director Sherry Toscano, and members of the HPTA and School Councils brought the program to the attention of local chef Chris Hart, who lives with his wife Jenny and two children, Ethan and Jaimie, in Hopkinton.  Chris reached out to Andy Husbands, his co-author of the BBQ cookbook Wicked Good Barbecue.

Husbands, the award-winning chef/owner of Tremont 647, has been enticing patrons with his adventurous American cuisine at his South End neighborhood restaurant and bar for well over a decade. A James Beard “Best Chef” semi-finalist, Andy competed in the sixth season of Fox Television Network’s Hells Kitchen with Gordon Ramsay. When he’s not in the kitchen or working with his favorite charities, Andy is on the BBQ trail with his award-winning team, iQUE http://www.iquebarbecue.com . His first cookbook, The Fearless Chef, is currently in its second printing. http://www.tremont647.com

Chris Hart, winner of the Jack Daniel Invitational World Championship in 2009 has dominated the competition BBQ circuit for the past 10 years with his team, iQUE. The team was the first group of northerners in barbeque history to win a championship. In 2010 Chris cooked an elaborate tasting menu at the James Beard House in NYC. In 2011 he competed in the Food Network's inaugural season of Best in Smoke.

The student recipe contest will be open to students in grades 2 – 8 at Elmwood, Hopkins and Hopkinton Middle School.  Two winning recipes will be selected from each grade.  Winning recipes may be featured in the school cafeterias.  Student chefs may win the opportunity to work with Hopkinton’s Chefs Move to School celebrity chefs in their cafeteria.  Contest details will be available at www.hptaonline.com

Baypath Humane Society Reopens - for Adoptions Only for Now

March 8, 2012 — According to Baypath Humane Society Acting Manager, Liz Jefferis, the no-kill shelter received the green light to reopen from the Department of Agriculture yesterday. The shelter had been closed after dogs were brought across state lines into Massachusetts against regulations. Five of the dogs contracted canine distemper and were put down by then-Manager Sue Bennison, who had taken them to her home, where she had a sick dog, instead of to the shelter and quarantine. Ms. Bennison was not at the shelter today, but Ms. Jefferis did not specify the reasons for her absence or if she would return.
The shelter is not taking on new animals, but is open for the adoption of the remaining 12 canine residents, while a renovation of the facility is done. They will take new animals when that is complete.
Ms. Jefferis said the shelter will reach out to the community with a low-cost vaccine clinic for rabies and distemper; and perhaps memory chips, for people who would not otherwise afford it.
The dog pictured above, Bowser, is a purebred pug. Although there are a couple of people who have applied to adopt him, the process is not complete. To see Bowser and hear Liz Jefferis talk affectionately about him, check out the HD video below:

Lieutenant Governor Timothy Murray Gets Tour, Welcomes STEM Meeting
at Caliper Life Sciences in Hopkinton

March 8, 2012 — During today's tour of the Hopkinton facility, Lieutenant Governor Timothy Murray listens as Rick Ekstrom, Caliper/Perkin Elmer Sr. Director of Operations describes the in vivo methods that the company uses to do drug trials on lab mice. Lab mice no longer need to be killed, one a day, to see the effects of a proposed drug on the growth of cells inside of a body. Caliper technology facilitates tracking the effects with fluorescence on a daily basis, as opposed to vivisection or euthanization.
Before the tour, parent company PerkinElmer Director of Global Technical Support, Jeffrey B. Killian said the purpose of their science is the betterment of personal health and environment safety.
On the environmental side, lots of products are sourced, he said, from different countries with standards that need scrutiny. PerkinElmer and Caliper produce instruments that test things like air, food supply, water, toys and paint to be sure they are compatible with the standards of the consumer countries.
As for personal health, he said they strive to be able to characterize diseases and create custom made tools — to come up with tests to detect and support cures and prevention of disease.
Finally, he said, they strive to give tools to researchers to develop drugs to target individual cures.
Since the acquisition of Caliper by PerkinElmer, Mr. Killian said, 50 jobs have come to Hopkinton from Waltham.
Caliper CEO Kevin Hrusovsky announced the acquisition in an interview with HopNews last
September 8, 2011.
Following the tour of Building 2, Lt. Governor Murray opened up a meeting of the Governor's Science Technology, Engineering, and Math [STEM] Advisory Council.

END IS IN SIGHT FOR RECRUITS

March 7, 2012 – With two days to go until they are sworn-in as Massachusetts State Troopers, 208 trainees go for a morning run today at the State Police Academy in New Braintree. The trainees have gone through 21 weeks of academics, physical training, defensive tactics, firearms training, and scenario training. The latter consisted of 75 simulated incidents designed to reflect the situations troopers may find themselves in once on the job, including a rampaging shooter inside a building to minor car crashes and everything in between. On Friday, March 9, they will graduate and be sworn-in in a ceremony at the DCU Center in Worcester.

They will begin a three-month break-in period early next week, during which each new trooper will be assigned to a field training officer on road patrols. This the first new class of State Police recruits to join the ranks in more than five years. It is an extremely important class to the department, which is currently down some 500 troopers, through normal attrition, since that last prior class graduated. Opening exercises and ceremonial drills begin at 10 a.m. Please note that the pinning of badges will be during this period as well. The speaking program, which includes Governor Patrick, Lt. Governor Murray, Public Safety Secretary Heffernan, and Colonel McGovern, begins at noon. Photo, content courtesy Mass State Police

Hopkinton Historical Society
2 p.m. on Sunday March 18

168 Hayden Rowe Street • Hopkinton, MA 01748

Welcome to the Graveyard!

The souls buried in Hopkinton’s nine cemeteries couldn't escape death but each has found a piece of immortality. Their lives will be remembered forever through their gravestones. Each stone tells the story of a life - and a time.

"There's a
treasure trove
of history right in your backyard," said Brenda Sullivan, a member of the Gravestone Girls. "There are 200 or 300 years of history buried under every cemetery. I consider it my job to get people out into the cemeteries."

Ms. Sullivan will be the guest speaker at 2 p.m. on Sunday March 18 at a free program of the Hopkinton Library and will be held at the Hopkinton Historical Society at 168 Hayden Rowe Street.

She will present a slide show and lecture on gravestone art and its symbolism and discuss the history of local cemeteries and the importance of preserving them. Their business promotes cemetery awareness and teaches gravestone history in an effort to connect audience to the towns they live in and to the ancestors who created them.

Part of her talk looks at the symbols on early graves, and what they represent. Some of these images may seem
ghoulish to modern eyes, but imagery such as a skull with wings tells a story of the times.

Program is free and refreshments will be served after the program. No RSVP necessary. For additional information call Ray at 508-435-9865.
