February 12, 2012 — The Hopkinton
Swimming and Diving Girl's Team had an incredible meet Saturday
morning, by placing 10th out of 44 teams at the South/Central
Sectionals at MIT. That was the highest finishing local
team. Sophomore Carly Adams (photo) placed 3rd in the
breaststroke, bettering her previous best time by almost two
seconds!! Freshmen Renee Salois had a great meet on
the diving board, and ended up 7th place. Last year's only
point getter for the entire team, Senior Juliana Tordella placed
17th, and Sophomore Ashley Windheuser placed 19th.
Freshmen Brianna Gallo had a
tremendous meet, by moving up ten spots in the 100 freestyle,
dropping over two seconds, qualifying for the State
Championships, and placing 12th with her best time. Other
individual swims that had best times, were Junior Jackie
Schofield and Freshmen Bridget Coffey's breaststroke.
The relays are really where the
team shined. The 200 Medley Relay of Brianna Gallo,
Bridget Coffey, Carly Adams and freshman Nikki Anenberg placed
7th, and the 400 free relay of Brianna, Nikki, Senior Madeline
Lipkin and Carly placed 10th, with the 2nd fastest 400 free
relay in school history. The 200 Free Relay with Bridget,
Freshman Emily Lewkowicz, Jackie and Nikki dropped a second off
their best time.

February 12, 2012 — Hopkinton High
School Cheerleaders showed their strength and spirit by taking
the TVL league crown besting five other teams Saturday afternoon
at Medway High School. ANOTHER victory on the road to the
nationals in Florida at the end of March. Congratulations to
Hopkinton High Cheerleaders.

Doherty turned one of the greenhouses into Gallery G, an art
gallery show and sale this evening, hosting such Hopkinton
notables as sculptor Michael Alfano and photographer Rich
Gazoorian. The models above were photographed by Mr. Doherty and
are wearing wigs of leaves, combining three of his vocations —
hairstyling, gardening and photography — into one.

February 11, 2012 — Woodville Rod and Gun Club member Tom Pratt
dishes out some venison meatballs in one of two buffet serving
lines this evening for the club's game feed. Although lions and
tigers were not on the menu, bear tacos were, as well as
pheasant stir fry, wild boar porketta, venison shepherd's pie
and buffalo meatloaf. The official count was 157 mostly male
diners who were seated together like sardines, which were
not on the menu.

Robert “Sully” Sullivan, 83
Robert “Sully” Sullivan, 83,
of Hopkinton passed away Friday, Feb. 10th at the Metrowest
Medical Center in Framingham. Born in Natick, he was the son of
the late Daniel and Margaret (Fitzgerald) Sullivan and husband
of Barbara (Beswick) Sullivan. They were married for 60 years.
Mr. Sullivan worked for Monnick Supply Hardware in the Paint
Dept. for many years and later worked for Data General. A
resident of Hopkinton for 55 years, Bob was active with the
Hopkinton and Ashland Lions Clubs and was a member of the VFW
Post 2331 in Ashland. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed spending
time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren, especially
summer camping with family and friends. Mr. Sullivan served his
country honorably in the Army.
In addition to
his wife, he is survived by three children: Judy MacKinnon and
her husband Dale of Natick; Paula Whitham and her husband David
of Upton; and Daniel Sullivan and his wife Wendy of Hopedale;
five grandchildren; Keri Spriggs, Ryan MacKinnon, Scott Whitham,
and Kyle and Cassy Sullivan; two great-grandchildren; Alexis and
Kaylee Spriggs; and one brother, Richard Sullivan and his wife
Marilyn of Natick.
A Funeral Mass
will be celebrated Wednesday, Feb. 15th at 10:00am in St. John
the Evangelist Parish, 20 Church St. in Hopkinton with burial to
follow in Mt. Auburn Cemetery in Hopkinton. Calling hours will
be held Tuesday from 4:00-8:00 PM in the Matarese Funeral Home,
325 Main St. in Ashland. In lieu of flowers donations may be

Vazza of Hopkinton Youth Services will facilitate a
community-minded discussion on "Adolescence and Healthy Body
Image" at the Hopkinton Public Library. Topics of focus include
concerns related to teen dieting, eating disorders, signs of
depression, mood swings, drug/alcohol use, addiction and sleep
problems. Discussion will emphasize ways of promoting healthy
life practices in eating, sleeping, exercise and wellness in the
teen years and participants will be encouraged to contribute
their concerns and suggestions. This program is free and open to

Police Association Seeks Marathon Waiver Applicants
The Hopkinton Police Association is
looking for two individuals willing to run the Boston Marathon
while raising money for the Hopkinton Police Association. The
waivers are available to the first two individuals willing to
raise at least $3000.00. The waivers allow the individual to run
in the Marathon without the required qualifying times and give
access to all the pre and post marathon events. The
proceeds from the waivers will allow the Hopkinton Police
Association to continue giving back to the community in the form
of charitable donations to worthy causes, scholarships and
police interactions with the community outside of the usual
uniformed policing.
These waivers are being offered on a
first come first serve basis. The first two individuals to
commit to the minimum $3,000.00 goal will be awarded the
waivers.

Rollover on
Ramp in Marlborough
February 9, 2012
— The ramp from Route 290 eastbound to 495 westbound was closed
after this morning’s tractor-trailer rollover in Marlborough.
The driver was
extricated by firefighters and was not injured. The trailer was
hauling food, which has been condemned by the local board of
health. The ramp was during the cleanup and investigation.
Troopers from
the State Police Barracks in Leominster and the
State Police Commercial Motor Vehicle Enforcement Section
arrived on scene on-scene.

away Tuesday, February 7, 2012. Born in Boston, he was the son
of the late Florence (Murray) and Walter McDonough. He was the

He is survived by 3 daughters, Ann McDonough of Hopkinton,

DEBORAH THOMAS ANNOUNCES RUN FOR
HOPKINTON BOARD OF SELECTMEN
Deb
Thomas, a member of the Planning Board, announced today that she
is seeking a position on the Hopkinton Board of Selectmen.
“I am running for the Board of
Selectmen because Hopkinton is facing critical challenges and
opportunities that must be addressed. The revitalization
of our downtown and replacement of Center School are the key
issues that challenge us today and have divided us as a
community.”
“Many of us were drawn to Hopkinton

Deb and her husband Kevin have lived
in Hopkinton since 2000 and have two daughters, Caitlin and
Ashley, who attend Hopkins and Elmwood School respectively.
Deb is very active in the Hopkinton community. She
currently serves on the Planning Board and volunteers for many
school related projects. In addition, she recently joined
the board of the Hopkinton Running Club, and has been a Girl
Scout Troop leader for a number of years. Deb is also an
avid golfer, skier and runner who has run the Boston Marathon
numerous times as well as the Reach the Beach Relay with her
fellow Hopkinton runners. Deb is registered to run her 10th
marathon this fall in New York.
Deb graduated from Bentley
University with a BS in Accountancy. Her professional
career includes working at PricewaterhouseCoopers for over
twenty years as a CPA and Business Development Executive. She
presently works part time at PwC in a financial operations role
and full time as a Mom. Deb has also worked in the private
sector as Director of Financial Planning and Analysis for a
company with revenue in excess of a billion dollars.

Committee Fabricates Meeting
Dear Editor:
Over the past year, Hopkinton’s Downtown
Initiative Steering Committee has worked with BETA Group to
design what they believe is a new and improved downtown.
Among the group’s plans is a proposal to eliminate many on
street parking spots in order to create bicycle lanes.
These parking spots are crucial to downtown and I vehemently
oppose their removal.
I have lived downtown for my entire life and I
have personally seen the many uses of these parking spots.
Customers of downtown businesses are just one group of people
that use this parking. For example, many employees of
local businesses park on Main Street and some people park
downtown and then take walks around town.
I would like to call one particular statement
made by the DISC committee to the attention of your readers.
At a meeting several weeks ago, a DISC committee member told the
committee and others in attendance that he had met with my
family to discuss possible mitigation of loss of parking in
front of our home and my father’s business. He went on to
state that whomever he spoke with was not interested in building
a shared parking lot with neighboring businesses. I would
like to clear the record on this. As of this writing, NO
member of the DISC committee and NO town representatives have
EVER met with any members of my household to discuss the loss of
on street parking. No such conversation ever occurred.
So I ask my fellow residents to stay informed and stay
skeptical. If the DISC is willing to invent an entire
meeting, what else are they willing to invent in order to push
their personal agendas?

State Police Seek Witnesses to Jan. 30 Crash on Route 290 in Shrewsbury
The
Massachusetts State Police are seeking witnesses to, or anyone
else with information about, a motor vehicle crash that occurred
on the evening of Monday, Jan. 30 on Route 290 in Shrewsbury.
The crash occurred at 7:36 p.m.
on Route 290 westbound, just before Exit 23, in Shrewsbury.
Preliminary investigation indicates that a 2000 Subaru Legacy
that was being operated by a 49-year-old Shrewsbury man went out
of control and made contact with a 2005 Acura TSX being operated
by a 40-year-old man from Holden. Both vehicles ultimately went
off the road to the left, with the Acura coming to rest against
a rock ledge and the Subaru coming to rest a short distance
ahead of the other car, on the shoulder.
Both drivers were wearing
seatbelts. The operator of the Acura was transported to the
University of Massachusetts Memorial Medical Center in Worcester by
ambulance with serious injuries.
Troopers assigned to the Holden
Barracks are investigating to determine why the Subaru went out
of control and whether any other vehicles were involved. Anyone
who saw the crash, or the sequence of events leading up to it,
is urged to contact Trooper Bray at the State Police Barracks in
Holden at (508) 829-8410. Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

Cestari Makes a Formal Announcement of His Bid For Reelection
February
8, 2012 —
It is
with great pleasure that I announce my candidacy for re-election
to the Hopkinton Board of Selectmen in the upcoming May
election. Three years ago I was humbled by the support of voters
on Election Day. I was duly appreciative of the support by my
fellow Selectmen, in voting me Vice Chairman, then Chairman, in
the past two consecutive years of my first term as Selectman.
Since my
election, I have tried to uphold the values that are shared by
our great majority and are in the best interest of the families,
students, elderly, businesses, and single residents of
Hopkinton. I am proud of the many accomplishments we have made
in Hopkinton during my tenure, including improvements to the
town’s fiscal health, investments in the education of our young,
consolidation of resources to conserve assets, increased
resources to support town infrastructure and public safety, and
in our concerted efforts to create a climate conducive to the
creation and retention of business in Hopkinton.
Despite these
important strides however, three years since my election the
nation remains financially unstable. I continue to witness close
friends and
neighbors
struggling with lost jobs, lower paying jobs and higher costs of
living. I consider it my civic duty to continue to contribute to
my community, and to help my friends and fellow residents by
doing what I know best: Serve as a member of the Hopkinton Board
of Selectmen.
I thank you, the
voters of Hopkinton, for your support in the last election and
over the past three years of my first term as Selectman. I
respectfully again, ask for your vote, as I seek another term in
the May 21st election.

February 7, 2012 — Selectmen approved a transfer of the
alcoholic beverage license for Cornell's Pub to Colm Scanlon
this evening. The Scanlon's will be paying a total of $600,000
for the property and the business with $400,000 down, and
$200,000 in a first mortgage held by Rob Cornell.
The Scanlons will not be making any major changes to the place
for a while, something the Selectmen were concerned about. In
addition, their application for entertainment license approval
caused concern for at least one Selectmen, who asked if they are
planning live entertainment. Mr. Resnick explained that the
entertainment license was for the television, radio and jukebox.
If a business with a liquor license wants live entertainment, it
must file a separate application.
Hopkinton Youth Commission member Dorothy Maruska stopped by to
speak with Selectmen about issues with Hopkinton youth, and
began by remarking that, "Hopkinton has a lot of privileged kids
trying risky things."
"We are trying to make parents understand the Social Host Law."
She said that it is important that parents start at an early age
to provide role models for their children and always abstaining
from drinking alcohol when driving from a gathering. Mrs.
Maruska also said that according to a recent survey, Hopkinton
youth used marijuana more frequently than their peers in
surrounding towns. She announced a Youth Commission
youth-oriented comedy event for February 15, 2012 at 7:00 pm in
the Hopkinton High School Auditorium.
Selectmen gave their blessing to ongoing negotiations between
the Town Manager, Demons Hockey and Legacy Farms LLC for the
proposed hockey arena and associated sports at the 19 acre
parcel given for the recreational use of the town by Legacy
Farms as part of the
Host Community Agreement. Click on left thumbnail to enlarge

Among other agenda items, Selectmen voted to sign a 20 year
lease at $1 per year between the town and the Hopkinton Center
for the Arts and the Hopkinton Community Endowment for use of
the former Terry Farm, recently known as the CAA Building, at 98
Hayden Rowe Street.
Selectmen also heard about budget requests from the town
departments that would increase taxes by 3.5%. However, Chairman
Todd Cestari calculated that the numbers he was hearing would
increase taxes by 7% or 8%. The budget process is in the
beginning phase.
