December 30, 201 — Twenty six former Hiller skaters and two goalies played on December 22, 2011 at Navin Arena in Marlborough, threw their gloves down and posed for this shot afterward.

Thank You, Hopkinton

On behalf of the Metrowest Marine Corps League, and the over 70,000 families in eastern Massachusetts, who received toys this Christmas, I want to thank the town of Hopkinton for their generous donations this year to The Toys For Tots program.
     I also want to thank five organizations that helped to collect these toys: The Leo Club of Hopkinton High School, the Principal's Cabinet of Hopkins School, The Hopkinton Police, Hopkinton Lumber, and the Hopkinton Parks and Recreation Dept.
     All the toys were brought to a central warehouse in Burlington, Mass. where they were sorted by age and gender, and then with the help of local social welfare agencies, distributed to needy children on Christmas Day.

Sophia Joy Priore, Newborn 

Whitinsville- Sophia Joy Priore of Whitinsville was placed into the arms of Jesus after only 11 days with us. Sophia fought with amazing strength but could not overcome several heart defects. Born in Boston, she was the daughter of Amanda (Sytsma) and Douglas Priore of Whitinsville and formerly of Hopkinton.

Along with her parents she is survived by a sister Jordan Grace of Whitinsville, paternal grandparents Bob and Sue Priore of Uxbridge, MA. and formerly Hopkinton; maternal grandparents; Bob and Mary Sytsma, Aunts and uncles; Annette Kolb and Chad Sytsma, Kyle and Michelle Sytsma all of Grand Rapids, MI, and Kim Priore of Framingham, MA.

After a private graveside service there will be a Memorial Service held at 10:30 AM on Saturday, Dec. 31, 2011 at the Faith Community Church 146 East Main St. Hopkinton, MA 01748. Burial services will be private prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, please consider giving to support Cardiology Research at Children's Hospital Boston, in memory of Sophia Priore. Residents are asked to remember the elderly and disabled of limited means living in our community when paying their property tax bills. A detachable form for making a voluntary contribution for this purpose is included with tax bills due February 1.

Wind-Tattered

     Governor Deval Patrick has ordered that the United States flag and the Commonwealth flag be lowered to half-staff at all state buildings from sunrise until sunset on Friday, December 30, 2011 in honor of Firefighter James Rice of the Peabody Fire Department who died in the line of duty on Friday, December 23, 2011.
     The order applies to the main or administration building of each public institution of the Commonwealth, e.g. town and city halls, other state-owned or state-controlled buildings, all state military installations.

Paper Exchange

December 28, 2011 — Hopkinton Police assisted with a paper exchange, and lit up the area on East Main Street by the Boston Marathon Start line where the road narrows, following this minor collision.

December 28, 2011 — A breezy, brisk, but unseasonably warm day brought these low-hanging clouds over Lake Whitehall, as seen facing north, conjuring up illusions of elephants, geese, cotton candy and other imaginary images.

Bad day on the highways

495 Crash

December 27, 2011 — According to information provided by the Massachusetts State Police, Route 495 Northbound in Boxboro is still partially closed following a 3:15 pm crash at the 73.8 mile marker. There were three vehicles involved, and a total of ten people were injured. Six were transported to UMASS Worcester. This includes the 41-year-old female from Monticello New York who was operating the Ford Van and taken to UMASS by medical helicopter. Three were transported Emerson Hospital in Concord and one transported to UMASS Leominster.  

News helicopters hovering overhead during the rescue operation were ordered away from the scene to facilitate the takeoff of the medical helicopter. 

UPDATE: According to the State Police, the van was travelling in the far rightlane and a Chrysler Concorde was travelling in the center lane when the operator of the Concorde attempted to move into the far right lane striking the van. The van spins out of control and rolls over. There were 7 people in the van including two children ages 5 and 8 years. ( these ages were provided verbally ) The 8-year-old  boy was ejected and ended up under the van. Witnesses stated that motorists stopped and lifted the van off the child.

Accident in Sharon, Route 95

2:22 pm Troopers from the Foxboro barracks are responding to a roll-over crash with serious injuries on Route 95 southbound, north of Exit 9 in Sharon. Route 95 southbound is being closed at this time to allow for rescue operations to proceed.  

2:45 pm Preliminary reports indicate that at least one victim has sustained fatal injury and several others were trapped inside the vehicle, believed to be a Ford Fusion sedan. We are expecting to land a medical helicopter shortly. The entire southbound side of the highway remains closed with traffic being diverted at the Coney Street exit.  

4:15 pm All lanes of traffic are now open at the crash scene on Route 95 southbound in Sharon.

Fatal Crash in Walpole

Today at 1:56 p.m., troopers assigned to the State Police Barracks in Foxboro responded to a single-vehicle crash on Route 95 South, north of Exit 9, in Walpole that killed the driver and seriously injured a passenger.  

Preliminary investigation by Trooper Michael Close indicates a 2009 Ford Focus  operated by Alison E.Irving, 24, of  Norwood,  was heading south in the far left lane when the vehicle partially drove off the edge of the roadway. Irving attempted to steer to the right when the vehicle went into a spin and continued across all lanes of the highway.  

The car made contact with the guardrail adjacent to the far right side of the roadway and rolled onto its roof, coming to rest in the center travel lane. Her passenger, Andrew A. Costello, 25, of Norwood, was ejected into the wood line adjacent to the far right side of the roadway. He was taken by medical helicopter to Rhode Island Hospital.  

Irving was partially ejected and received fatal injuries. She was pronounced deceased at the scene.  

The facts and circumstances of the crash remain under investigation by Troop H of the Massachusetts State Police with the assistance of the State Police Collision Analysis Reconstruction Section and the State Police Crime Scene Services Section. Troopers were assisted at the scene by the Norwood, Sharon, and Walpole Fire Departments, and the Department of Transportation's Highway Division.

Charlotte M. Estes, 80 

Charlotte M. Estes, 80, of Hopkinton, passed away Sunday, December 25, 2011 after a long illness. Born in Framingham, she was the daughter of the late Catherine (McPherson) and I. James Estes.

A graduate of Holliston High School, Charlotte was a former resident of Holliston, Framingham, and Natick. She was a member of St. Mary's Church in Holliston and St. John's Church in Hopkinton. She spent much of her time caring for her mother and enjoyed spending time with her extended family.

She is survived by a sister, Theresa Genoa and her husband Robert of Upton, a niece, Susan Genoa of Worcester, as well as many cousins.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, January 3, 2012 from 9:30-10:30 a.m. at the Chesmore Funeral Home of Hopkinton, 57 Hayden Rowe St. www.ChesmoreFuneralHome.com A funeral mass will follow at 11:00a.m. at St. John's Church in Hopkinton with burial to follow in the parish cemetery. Leaving No Stone Unturned

December 27, 2011 — Above, left, Ashland Police Officer Chris Alberini and his K-9 Officer Dax search for a breaking and entering suspect on Grove Street in Hopkinton this afternoon, while Hopkinton Officer Patrick O'Brien stands at the ready with his handgun drawn and his trigger finger in a safe position.
        Police received a tip from a reliable neighbor of the residence that someone who did not belong there had gone into the back yard. Police set up a perimeter with multiple cruisers and called for assistance from the dog from Ashland.
        Police followed live tips from neighbors and followed the dog from residence to residence, finding an open rear door at one, and with permission, entered the residence with the canine.
        Several people who were walking and fit the description somewhat were spoken to about their whereabouts, but were cleared. At another house where there is construction, workers were asked for identification.
         Most units cleared around 2:30 pm, and all units cleared the area by 2:45 pm without making any arrests or engaging in any conflict.

Fire and Police Rescue Driver on Route 495

December 26, 2011 — Police were the first on the scene of this vehicle off of the road in a ditch at around 6:30 pm today just north of the northbound Route 495 entrance ramp at West Main Street in Hopkinton. The first police officer responding said he believed that the driver would need to be extricated.
       Witnesses who were asked by State Police to stay and give statements said that the vehicle left the roadway and traveled on the wrong side of the guardrail for about 500 feet before the crash. One witness said the vehicle drove for that distance, and then hit a tree, which sent it back toward the highway and crashing into the guard rail, which kept it from re-entering the roadway. According to witnesses, no other vehicles were involved.
       The firefighters and police carried the victim up the embankment and onto a stretcher for a ride to the hospital.
       While the driver was prepared for transport, other firefighters searched the immediate area, one with a thermal imaging camera, to be sure there were no other occupants who could have been ejected.
       The extent of the male driver's injuries are unknown, but he was conscious when police arrived.

MISSING PERSON ALERT FROM READING POLICE

Missing since approximately 6:20am on 12-26-2011 today. She is a 40 year old white female, approximately 5'9", 115lbs with short dark brown hair and blue eyes. She is believed to be wearing a light blue ski jacket, blue jeans, and a pair of black shoes. It is believed that she went out for a walk and hasn't returned. If you have any information or may know of her whereabouts please call the RPD at 781-944-1212.
