PATRICK-MURRAY ADMINISTRATION ANNOUNCES $11.38M TO TRAIN 13,000 WORKERS
AND CREATE 1,700 NEW JOBS
138 Companies to Benefit from Grant-Funded Skills
Training.
Hopkinton's Lonza
Biologics Inc. will receive $197,200
BOSTON - Monday, December 12, 2011 - The Patrick-Murray
Administration today announced $11,382,220 in Workforce Training Fund
grants to 138 Massachusetts companies. The grants, which support up to
two years of training, will create approximately 1,700 new jobs and
train a total of 13,000 workers.
"To compete in the global economy, we must
continuously invest in our workforce and I am proud to give thousands of
our workers the chance to improve their skill sets," said Governor Deval
Patrick. "Because of innovative programs like the Workforce Training
Fund, Massachusetts continues to lead the nation out of the global
economic recession.”
Employees are receiving training in diverse areas such as
customer service, sales, machining, milling, robotics, project
management, injection molding and computer technology.
“Our Administration works with companies through the
Workforce Training Fund to provide their employees with essential job
skills to cultivate a more effective workplace,” said Lieutenant
Governor Timothy Murray. “With this training, companies create greater
efficiencies in doing business, leading to more opportunities for new
jobs, increased work capacity and business growth. File photo.
In 2010, Lonza received a
grant to support expansion of their infrastructure. Governor Deval
Patrick gave HopNews an exclusive interview following his presentation.

Tree Location Contest
The
Hopkinton Fire Department Station 2 is located on Route 135, Wood
Street, in Woodville, a village of Hopkinton, Massachusetts.
Beside that
station, on the left, western side, is a trail, a cart path of sorts.
The tree
pictured is located a couple of hundred feet down that path. As an
aside, there is a stream to the left of the path that falls over some
old mill construction in two places before it becomes Whitehall Brook.
NOTE:
HopNews offered $25 to the person who could best describe the location.
Although most people described where it is located — some actually
thought it was elsewhere — no one mentioned the street it is on,
presuming that everyone knew that. That is not the case. Nonetheless,
even without the specific street, Jim Weckback described the location
the best, in this writer's opinion, and so he wins the $25. The old mill
remnants on the opposite side of the trail, mentioned by one or more
contestants — a raceway, falls and apparent foundations — are prominent
in the photo below.

State Trooper Arrests
Two Men for Stealing Storm Grates
Trooper’s sharp eye
leads to arrest of suspected thieves.
PLYMOUTH
- December 10, 2011 — Today, at 10:35 a.m., Trooper
Joshua Fries was completing a traffic stop on Route 25
in Plymouth when
he observed a white box truck with a Budget Rental logo
on the side of it. Trooper Fries recalled the
Mattapoisett Police Department had recently broadcasted
a “BOLO” (Be On the Look Out) for a similar truck. The”
BOLO” also contained a description of two “scruffy white
males” who were wanted for questioning in the recent
theft of several storm grates from their roads. The
thefts leave the public at risk for open holes in
sidewalks and roads.
Trooper Fries began to
follow the truck while requesting updated information
from the barracks on the Mattapoisett Police “BOLO”. The
Bourne Barracks received information that the two
suspects were recently seen in
New Bedford
attempting to sell the covers to a local scrap dealer,
Cody and Tobin. The dealer refused to purchase the
grates and contacted Mattapoisett Police.
Trooper Fries waited for a
safe place to conduct a motor vehicle stop and stopped
the truck at the Bourne Rotary. Trooper Fries spoke with
the driver, BENJAMIN SISSON, 22, of
North Falmouth. After a brief discussion,
Sisson opened the back of the truck and revealed
numerous storm grates from different area towns.
SISSON and passenger
KRISTOFER WILLIAMS,28, of Hatchville (Falmouth) were
arrested and booked at the Bourne Barracks, both charged
with larceny over 250.00 dollars and receiving stolen
property over 250.00 dollars. A storm grates estimated
cost to purchase, as told to troopers on-scene, is
approximately 250 dollars. Twenty-two grates were
eventually claimed by the towns of
Fairhaven, Mattapoisett, Bourne and Wareham. The towns will each seek their own
complaints at a later time.
SISSON and WILLIAMS will be
arraigned in Falmouth District Court on December 12.
Hit and Run on Route 495
South in Mansfield
December 10, 2011 — At 1:30p.m. today, troopers from the
Foxboro barracks responded to several calls for a person
struck by another car on Route 495 southbound in Mansfield. Preliminary
reports indicate the operator of a tractor trailer unit
was in the breakdown lane, working on one of his tires,
when he was struck by a car that then fled the scene.
Witness reports are that it was possibly a blue Ford
Escape with front end damage that struck the victim and
fled. The left lane is open while the others are closed
to allow for rescue and investigation purposes. The
victim was transported to a local hospital by ambulance
for serious injuries.

Oxford Abduction
UPDATE: The male and the female involved in this
incident are at the Oxford
police station. At this point, whether there actually
was a kidnapping is unclear. Oxford Police are
investigating that, as well as a report that the pickup
truck struck a male pedestrian in the Wal-mart parking
lot. The police will not be issuing any further updates
unless there are significant developments.
State
Police patrols from Troop C, as well as the State Police
Air Wing and K-9 units, are assisting Oxford Police in
responding to the potential abduction of a young woman
from outside the Wal-Mart in that town. Initial reports
indicate that the woman may have been pushed into a blue
pickup truck by a young man at approximately 7:30 a.m.
Units are currently seeking that truck. The driver is
described as a white male in his mid-20s, short- to
medium-height, with a thin build and brown hair and
wearing a blue sweatshirt, jeans and workboots. The
female is described as in her late teens, approximately
5’6”, with a thin build, brown hair, a dark waist length
coat and blue jeans. Anyone seeing the truck or these
individuals should call 911. No further information is
available at this time.

Statement of Lt. Governor Regarding
Worcester Fire
BOSTON – Thursday, December 8, 2011 - The
following is a statement from Lieutenant Governor
Timothy Murray regarding the firefighters involved in
the tragic Worcester fire this morning:
“On behalf of Governor Patrick and the
people of Massachusetts, I extend our deepest
condolences to the family and friends of Jon Davies, who
died a hero’s death in the tragic fire in Worcester. We
also offer our prayers for a full and speedy recovery to
Worcester Firefighter Brian Carroll, who was at his
partner’s side when the building collapsed and who
thankfully survived.
“We thank the brave men and women of the
Worcester Fire Department, who acted swiftly and
courageously to pull Jon and Brian from the charred
rubble. Their work today is in the finest tradition of
the fire service. When duty called, they answered, and
in the face of a deadly fire, they responded quickly to
protect their fellow citizens. Now, it is up to all of
us to offer our prayers and reach out in any way we can
to provide comfort and support for those who suffered so
greatly.”

Path of Least Resistance
December 8, 2011 — The historic gatehouse on Highland
Street, preserved when the dam was replaced a few short
years ago, sits above the spillway from Lake Whitehall
Dam. The dam was originally under Highland Street, and
the lake came right up to it, facilitating using the
area for diving a generation ago. Now, the new dam is
located about 50 feet south of the street, its sloping
side, shallow depth and lack of height making it
foolhardy for anyone to dive from it. As the water rolls
through Firehouse Pond and over its dam, it will
continue to become Whitehall Brook, but not before it
passes over some wheel races and falls downstream, where
a factory once straddled the rushing water.

Worcester Firefighter Dies after Entering Building to
Rescue Occupant
WORCESTER - December 8, 2011 — The Worcester Fire
Department has lost one of their own following a
devastating fire that destroyed an Arlington Street
three-decker this morning. This is not the first loss
for the department. Six firefighters died a dozen years
ago after being trapped in the Worcester Cold Storage
fire, allegedly started by homeless couple who knocked
over a candle, but left the building without reporting
the incident. Firefighters re-entered that building
thinking someone was inside, as they did in this
morning's fire.

Longevity in
Business
Above, from
left, Caliper executives Kevin Hrusovsky, Bruce Bal and Aubrey Doyle get
ready to accept a recognition for thirty years in business in Hopkinton
from Hopkinton Chamber of Commerce President Robert McGuire at the
Hopkinton Country Club.
December 7,
2011 — It was a mutual admiration society this evening as Hopkinton
Chamber of Commerce members celebrated the holidays and gave respectful
recognition to members who had achieved significant anniversaries this
year.
Caliper Life Sciences, formerly Zymark and now a part of PerkinElmer, is
hitting their thirty year mark. The company specializes in helping to
bring the process of drug trials to market more quickly to speed cures.
"In the last two or three years," said Caliper CEO Kevin Hrusovsky,
"some of the drugs are remarkable. Fifty percent of skin cancer can be
cured," he said. But Caliper wasn't the oldest company accepting kudos
tonight.
Chamber member E. L. Harvey received recognition for their 100 years in
business. The company straddles the Hopkinton/Westborough line, and has
been ahead of the curve with recycling, shutting their landfill decades
ago.
One of three others recognized this evening, the Hopkinton
Independent, a tabloid-sized bi-weekly newspaper mailed free to homes and businesses
in Hopkinton, celebrated their twelfth year putting out the ink.
With Bad Weather Expected Tonight, State
Police Offer Tips for Driving in Rain, Snow and Ice
December
7, 2011 — With a nor’easter expected to pass close to Cape Cod during
the early morning hours, Massachusetts will experience varying types of
precipitation and, with a drop in temperatures, icy conditions tonight
into tomorrow. Black ice on roads will be a concern for the morning
commute. The Massachusetts State Police remind motorists of several
driving safety tips.
Moderate to heavy rain is expected today, with more sustained heavy rain
late tonight into the early morning hours. Localized flooding may occur
across much of the state, including the Boston, Worcester, Springfield regions. Motorists are reminded to
drive slowly, to leave extra space between themselves and the vehicles
ahead of them, and to avoid driving through standing water and large
puddles. Motorists who crash or get into trouble should call 911 on
their cellular phone to immediately be connected to a State Police
Communications center.
Some areas of the state should experience a changeover to wet snow,
first in the Berkshires late tonight and then in
Central Massachusetts by early morning.
Boston
and points east may not see the changeover until the precipitation is
about to end by daybreak. Motorists are reminded to fully clear all snow
from their car windows, roofs, lights, and registration plates. Failure
to do is considered impeded operation, which is against the law, and
also puts drivers and those around them at risk. Again, motorists should
proceed slowly.
The timing of the storm will leave messy conditions for the Thursday
morning commute. Of particular concern is black ice, which may affect
much of interior southern New England, even as far southeast as
metropolitan Boston and possibly into
Rhode Island. Black ice results when there is
not enough time for leftover slush or standing water to evaporate before
temperatures drop near or below freezing. Thus, even though the
precipitation may be over, motorists should be aware that icy spots
could remain on roads well into Thursday’s commute. Motorists are urged
to drive slowly, leave extra time for their commute, and leave extra
space between themselves and the vehicle ahead of them.
Please bear in mind that the posted speed limit is not the recommended
speed for wet and icy conditions. Motorists should drive significantly
slower than the posted limit in bad weather.
