Massachusetts State Police Offers Tips for Storm Safety

Residents should be indoors in a secured location by late Saturday evening. While the storm is not expected to begin in earnest until Sunday morning, with the most intense hours expected Sunday afternoon, the possibility exists that its pace could accelerate.
Residents are urged to stay off the roads Sunday. Heavy rains and heavy winds, with the probability of hurricane-force gusts and the possibility of sustained hurricane-force winds, are expected. The wind and rain will make driving hazardous.
Any visitors leaving Massachusetts by car are urged to do so as soon as possible, and if at all possible not wait until Saturday night to do so.
Anyone coming across downed wires or utility poles should, of course, avoid contact with them.
Anyone having to drive during the storm (which we strongly recommend against) should avoid driving through deep or standing water. Do not drive through water that is higher than the bottom of the wheel rims.
Residents should have several days of supplies of potable water and non-perishable food in case of prolonged power outages, which are a possibility.
Residents should have a flashlight, battery-powered radio and extra batteries.
Please check on elderly or shut-in neighbors if possible.
Anyone in trouble may call 911 on a cell phone to immediately be connected to a State Police dispatch center.

NOTE: The State Police Communications section and the Bourne Barracks have been inundated with calls from citizens claiming that the media is reporting that the Cape Cod bridges will be closing. Please be advised that the decision whether to close the bridges will be made by the US Army Corps of Engineers and that no such decision has been made at this time.

DCR PREPARES FOR SEVERE WEATHER AND POSSIBLE FLOODING FROM HURRICANE IRENE THIS WEEKEND

Please be advised that due to the predicted track of Hurricane Irene, all DCR facilities will be closing on Saturday, August 27, 2011 at 12:00 noon.

They anticipate reopening on Tuesday, August, 30, 2011.

Hurricane Forecast Pushes Tournament Forward

5^th Annual WMRC 1490 AM Radiothon and Milford Regional Golf Classic

Rescheduled to August 31, 2011

Due to the hurricane forecast to impact our area on Sunday - keeping in mind player safety and playability of the course - the Milford Regional Golf Classic and WMRC 1490-AM Radiothon have been postponed. The Franklin Country Club has graciously agreed to move the date to Wednesday, August 31^st, 2011.

Please tune in to hear the live broadcast from the Golf Classic. WMRC will broadcast live between 7:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. from the Milford Regional Golf Classic at Franklin Country Club.

The event will also be streaming live on http://www.WMRCDailyNews.com/. The Radiothon will feature interviews with Milford Regional staff, patients and family members. Throughout the day, listeners will be encouraged to call in or go to Milford Regional’s Web site to make gifts to the Medical Center. Proceeds will benefit the Oliva Patient Comfort Fund for Cancer Care.

With tremendous community support, the WMRC Radiothon has been able raise more than $100,000 over the past four years. We hope that the community will once again show their support. Every gift to the WMRC Radiothon, large or small, makes a difference to someone coping with cancer.

Appreciation for Heidi

August 25, 2011 — One of her coworkers arranged a gathering this evening for Heidi Kriger (arrow), former Chief Financial Office of the Town of Hopkinton, whose contract was not renewed by Town Hall this year. Several people came and went before this photo was taken, and several were camera-shy, preferring to be behind the photographer during the photo. In addition, another ten or so pulled in as the photographer was leaving.

Mrs. Kriger worked for the Town of Hopkinton for over 12 years. One attendee felt it was important to make note that all town departments and divisions, including Fire, Police, Schools and DPW, were represented this evening.

Morrice Dancers Perform at Cornell's

August 25, 2011 — The American Travelling Morrice Dancers kept their promise today, and danced at Hopkinton State Park before heading to Cornell's for some refreshments and pizza, before performing there, too. The lighthearted group, dressed in white and wearing suspenders on their waists and bells on their legs, performed a variety of dances with handkerchiefs and sticks, accompanied by fife, drum and accordion. The rain stopped prior to their arrival at Cornell's, for which they took credit, and danced to spread good fortune in Hopkinton. Some of the event was recorded, and even more was webcast live. Area Town Leaders Meet to Discuss Casino /Mitigation Strategy

August 25, 2011 — With the recent release of gaming legislation out of Beacon Hill, the members of four local Metro West Boards of Selectman met in Holliston Wednesday evening to discuss the impact the legislation might have on their communities.

Selectmen Jon Fetherston of Ashland, Jay Marsden of Holliston, Todd Cestari of Hopkinton (File photo), and Paul Joseph of Natick along with Paul LeBeau Town Administrator in Holliston, met to review the issues of mitigation, and how local communities that abut the so called “host community” would deal with effects of a casino in the neighboring town of Milford.

Joined by Bruce Leish of the Metrowest Regional Collaborative, the group reviewed their common concerns on the costs incurred by the communities that surround the “host community”, and how to best communicate to the Legislature the importance of being able to have a “seat at the table” when the time came to address the impact localized gaming would have on their communities.

The potential impact on housing, roads, transportation, schools, and public safety drove the discussion. Of specific concern, is the risk that the towns surrounding a host community are in many ways burdened by the costs associated with legalized gaming while at the same time do not have access to any of the revenue generated by the facilities that could be used to deal with the challenges created by the introduction of gaming to the area.

The recently released legislation allows for the creation of a local community mitigation advisory committee in each of the three regions referenced in the bill, as well as requiring any applicant for a casino license to negotiate a memorandum of understanding with surrounding communities.

“It is our hope that any gaming legislation approved by the Legislature requires a developer to deal with the local communities impacted by the proposed casino, and allow them the ability to be able to realistically address the impact that a casino may have in their community, through a well-developed and well-funded mitigation plan. We will continue to work with our legislators as well as within our own communities to make sure these issues stay front and center throughout the process.”

August 25, 2011 — Inasmuch as about 75% of Hopkinton residents moved in over the last 25 years, there is a good chance that some of them grew up in other area towns, Hudson among them. In the early 1970s, a group of talented teens calling themselves Sunny Down Snuff played weekend gigs at the tennis courts in Hudson for the area youth. In the meantime most have made their marks in the music industry. They are reuniting this weekend for the 15th year in a row, playing the classic rock that drew the crowds back then.

For those people who grew up with them, as well as people who became fans of those talented musicians in the following years — Tom Yates*, Glen Evans*, Ralph Lanigan and Pumpsie Pontibrand — the group will get together for their annual reunion this weekend on the day, place and time above.

Hopkinton Center for the Arts Offers New Fall Classes

HOPKINTON, Mass (August 25, 2011) --- The Hopkinton Center for the Arts, which is comprised of the Cultural Arts Alliance (CAA) and Enter Stage Left Theater (ESL), is offering several new classes this fall.

In addition to children’s art classes, the CAA will be offering teen and adult workshops in Digital Photography, Encaustic Wax Painting, Jewelry-making, and Animal and Human Portraiture. ESL will be offering a new film-making workshop for grades 5 – 8, as well as classes in acting, musical theater and voice for all ages. The HCA will also offer private music lessons in piano, guitar and violin as well as a new series of “After-School at the Art Center” classes, Vacation Workshops and Early-Release Programs at the Center. Fall classes begin the week of September 26 and will take place at the Farmhouse, 98 Hayden Rowe, Hopkinton. To register or obtain further information go to www.hopartscenter.org.

Fire in the Woods

August 24, 2011 — The sole resident of Piazza Lane investigated the reason for his power loss and discovered that a hollow tree had collapsed on his electrical service on Lake Whitehall State Park property, adjacent to the "Whitehall property" that the town owns. It ripped part of the lines down and caught fire. Above, the fire can be seen inside the tree, and the smoke from it filling the surrounding woods. A very successful summer baseball season came to an end the first week of August. The Hopkinton Babe Ruth 14-U team finished the Shrewsbury Colonial Summer Classic baseball tournament with a 7-1 record. The teams only loss coming in the final game. The team outscored it's opponents 68-21 with a potent offense followed by outstanding pitching.

Parks and Recreation Commission to “Go Green” with Online-Only Activities Brochures

Will Conduct Survey to Solicit Feedback Status of Programs and Facilities

Hopkinton, MA (August 24, 2011) -- The Hopkinton Parks and Recreation Commission, in cooperation with the Town of Hopkinton’s commitment to “go green”, has announced that it will be releasing its Fall / Winter Activity Brochure only in online format. Activity Brochures will no longer be mailed to Hopkinton households each season.

In addition, the Parks and Recreation Commission has announced that in September it will conduct a comprehensive survey of residents to gather feedback on the status, condition and use of the town’s recreational facilities (parks, fields, beaches, etc.), on the programs currently being offered to residents, as well as solicit input on new programs to offer in upcoming seasons.

“The Parks and Recreation Commission is committed to its mission of providing and promoting high-quality recreational experiences and park facilities that enhances the lifestyle of the Hopkinton community,” said Parks and Recreation Commission Chairman Ken Driscoll. “Regular feedback from residents is a critical part of delivering on that mission.”

The Activity Brochure will be released for the Fall / Winter session as an interactive PDF document on the Parks and Recreation Commission page of the Hopkinton website (http://www.hopkinton.org/parks). Residents will be able to view programs for the fall and winter sessions, register and pay, all in one place. Previous participants in Parks and Recreation programs will be notified via email when the activities brochures are live on the website, and the Commission will announce its availability via local media outlets as well.

The survey will be released in mid-September in a mailing to households in Hopkinton. It will also be made available online. Questions about the activities brochure and survey can be directed to Parks and Recreation Director Mike Preite at 508-497-9750.

Carolyn (Ingram) Duffy, 82

Carolyn (Ingram) Duffy, 82, of Hopkinton, where she has lived for over 50 years, died Sunday, August 21, 2011 at the Medway Country Manor. She was 82.

Born in Hyannis, she was the daughter of the late Frank O. and Celia May (Wordell) Ingram, and was raised in Falmouth.

She was a homemaker and the wife of the late Martin F. Duffy, who passed in 1998. She had worked for Dunkin Donuts in Milford when her children were young.

She was the mother of John F. “Jac” Duffy of Georgia, Patrick J. Duffy of Georgia, Maureen A. Hutchins and her husband Larry of Milford, Tammy L. Noble and her husband Bill of Framingham, and Michael V. Duffy and his wife Michelle of Maynard. She was the sister of Maureen Stewart, Marty Ingram, Joe Ingram, and Ken Ingram, all of California , and her late twin sister Marilyn Houston and Frank Ingram Jr. She is also survived by 13 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and her extended family at the Medway Country Manor.

A Memorial Service will be held at the Medway Country Manor, 115 Holliston Street, Medway, on Saturday, August 27, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. Relatives and friends are kindly invited.

9-11 Victim Thanks Hopkinton

To the Editor,

I am writing to respond to a recent photograph of Michael Whalen, American Legion Post 202 Adjutant, hanging a commemorative flag on the Veterans Memorial Gazebo to remember the attack on America of September 11, 2001. It reminded me that I never properly thanked the community of Hopkinton for the outpouring of love and support provided to my son and me on the loss of my husband and his dad, Christopher R. Zarba, Jr. in that terrible event.

After the attack, we received dozens of thoughtful and caring cards, letters, and gifts from residents young and old, many of whom did not know us personally. These kind gestures helped us see that the vast majority of people are good at heart, despite what had happened. Neighbors provided countless generous services from driveway-plowing to cooking to home maintenance and more. We are particularly grateful to the Marathon Quilters for the custom-designed handmade heirloom quilt they gave to my son, to the children of Elmwood School for the gift of children's books, and to many more individuals and officials too numerous to thank.

While we have decided to attend the events at Ground Zero this year on 9/11, we wanted you to know that Hopkinton will be very much in our hearts on that day. We feel fortunate to live among you and privileged to remain part of the community. Thank you so very much.
