High School Break-In Suspect Captured
August 23, 2011 — This morning at approximately 12:45 am, Hopkinton Police responded to a burglar alarm at Hopkinton High School on Hayden Rowe Street, not an uncommon occurrence. However, this time officers arrived to observe someone running inside the school, and requested assistance from Ashland and Holliston Police as well as the State Police K-9 division. According to a press release from Hopkinton Lt. Charles Wallace, officers noticed an open exterior door and a subject attempting to flee. A 17 year-old DiCarlo Road resident was apprehended and charged with Break and Entry in the Nighttime for a Felony and released on bail. He is expected to appear in court today. According to Lt. Wallace, no school property was damaged or taken. |

Children's Safety Course, radKIDS radKIDS is the national
leader in children's safety education and provides the only holistic,
practical and realistic life skills safety program available for
Hopkinton residents and parents of 3 young children, Kim and Tim Brennan are certified radKIDS Instructors and are now offering this course to children and families in Hopkinton and surrounding towns. The next radKIDS class will be held over the course of four Saturdays, 9/17, 10/1, 10/15, & 10/22 from 1:00 - 4:00 pm at 6 Main Street, Hopkinton (the John Warren Masonic Lodge). The cost for the class is $90 per child ($60 for a sibling) and includes a Family Safety Manual, Safety Activity Book & Certificate. The Freemasons of the John Warren Masonic Lodge have graciously donated their space for the radKIDS classes to be held.
A free return and practice policy is honored at radKIDS classes across the country. Once a child has taken the radKIDS class, they can enroll in any radKIDS class, free of charge up to the age of 12, for as many times as they would like.

MetroWest YMCA Family Outdoor Center offering fall programs The MetroWest YMCA Family Outdoor Center will be offering the following programs for youth and families this coming fall.
Youth Archery Program
The MetroWest Family Outdoor Center located in Hopkinton will be offering a six week youth archery program for youth 7 – 12 years of age. The program will take place every Saturday starting on October 1st and running through November 5th. The program is designed to teach participants the fundamentals of archery including equipment review, shooting techniques and safety, and will be led by a certified instructor. Classes will be held from 10 AM – 11:30 AM at the Archery Range located at the YMCA Family Outdoor Center on 45 East Street, Hopkinton.
Space is limited to the first 12 participants per session. Registration fee is $80.00 for members and $105.00 for Non- Members and includes 6 classes and participation award. Register with the form at the back of our Program Guide. Note: All participants must sign a release from prior to participating in either program. The waiver must be signed by a parent/guardian.
Family Weekend Adventure Programs We are pleased to offer three new Family Weekend Adventures this fall! There will be one each month in September, October and November, and are run by out Outdoor Education Department. Bring the whole family for an education outdoor adventure!
Animal Tracking, Saturday September 10th, 10 am – 12 pm. Learn which animals live near you, and how to discover what they do when you’re not around!
Beginning Map and Compass Skills, Saturday October 15th, 10 am – 12 pm. We will cover the basics of how to use a map and compass when traveling in the outdoors. Compasses will be provided, but feel free to bring your own!
Nature Games, Saturday, November 12th, 10 am – 12 pm. Learn how to identify trees, how and why birds migrate and more while playing family games.

Schools will be opening on Tuesday
To help protect the children we urge motorists to: - Slow down near schools and in residential areas - Obey speed limit of 20 MPH in School Zone when lights are flashing - Plan for extra travel time if you’ll be traveling during times when children will be traveling to and from school - Use extra caution at intersections, crosswalks and other locations where children may be walking to and from school - Always stop for school buses when they are loading or unloading passengers or have stop lights activated - Always maintain a minimum distance of 100 feet when following a school bus with passengers
The Hopkinton Police Department will be patrolling and enforcing motor vehicles laws to provide a safe trip to and from school for all children. Failure to obey the motor vehicle laws could result in a motorists being fined, some of the potential fines are: - Failure to stop for a pedestrian in a crosswalk – Minimum $200 fine - Failure to stop for a school bus while loading or unloading students – Minimum $250 fine - Failure to maintain 100 feet distance while following a school bus – Minimum $35 fine - Speeding – Minimum $100 fine |

RJ's Run 2011
August 21, 2011 — The family and friends of RJ Penney took off at noon today from the Woodville Rod and Gun Club on Wood Street in Woodville, following the noontime wail of a siren from the tail-car today. RJ lost his life in a motorcycle accident in 2006, and friends and family — some in strollers who had never gotten to know him — have come together each year for a motorcycle ride in his memory and give the proceeds to a worthy cause. This year's charity is the American Cancer Society. The group plans to ride 60 miles and return for a barbeque at the Club. |

Police Still Refuse to Name Officer Injured This
Morning
August 18, 2011 — The Hopkinton Police Department continues to refuse to confirm the name of the officer injured this morning. However, HopNews learned that a Special/Auxiliary Hopkinton Police Officer was injured by a truck while working a detail on the Elm Street construction site. He was brought to UMass in Worcester, where a source has said he is undergoing surgery at this time (7:00 pm) and is expected to be in the hospital a few days. August 18, 2011 — You can't keep a great chef down, and Maria Forté, formerly of Maria's Caffe Italiano on Main Street in Hopkinton, is proving that now. For eleven years, Ms. Forté brought her authentic brand of Italian cuisine — with always-fresh spices painstakingly chopped by hand — to Downtown Hopkinton, building a clientele who enjoyed the experience, spiced by the how's and whys of her cooking. From glassware that was without even one fingerprint, to serving platters that are color-coordinated with the food placed into them, Maria's methods expressed a love for not only the taste and smell of her recipes, but for the presentation as well, and continues to do that. The sprig of mint on top of today's summer salad of ripened avocado and cantaloupe, and shrimp flavored with a hint of lemon, was placed there at the very end of the composition, but somehow added a subtle and delightful taste to the entire plate. Following her stint on Main Street and an unsuccessful effort to purchase the building she leased, Maria opened a lager venue in the industrial area on South Street closer to her Milford home. Her planned opening was delayed time after time, the economy nosedived in the meantime, and added to a recipe for failure. But without those extraneous elements, Maria is free to again offer her fine Italian cuisine to her discriminating clients, as well those looking for real Italian food. Hopkinton Police Officer Struck on Elm Street
On Thursday 18 August 2011, at approximately 07:18 AM, a Hopkinton Police Officer was struck by a construction vehicle owned by Ludlow Construction of Ludlow, Mass., while directing traffic at a construction site on Elm Street.
The Officer suffered serious injuries believed to be non-life threatening and transported to UMass Medical Center in Worcester, Mass, by Hopkinton Fire Department Paramedics.
The accident is being investigated by Hopkinton Police, Massachusetts State Police Collision and Analysis Reconstruction Section and the Massachusetts State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Section.
The accident investigation is on-going at this time.

August 17, 2011 — This cast bronze Mico Kaufman sculpture on the grounds of Weston Nurseries features Stylianos Kyriakides, left, who represented Greece and won the 1946 BAA Boston Marathon, and Phedippedes, who is said to be the runner who inspired the modern marathon 2500 years ago, showing Kyriakides the way. Mr. Kyriakides has recently received a finishing medallion for this year's race from an unknown donor. Everyone who runs gets one. |

August 17, 2011 — "Look, Uncle Bob," said Austin, pointing to an enormous butterfly, while pulling out of the parking space this morning. "What a great photo that would make," we both thought. "Quickly, hand me the camera," I said, repeating a phrase I used when he spotted a yearling the other day. I jumped out of the car, camera in hand. "Over there," I pleaded to the flying wonder, pointing to a flower and hoping the butterfly would comply. It did, and I took a photo. And then it began to fly away. "No, over here," I said, and it came back and stopped on another flower where I was pointing. I took another photo, and then it flew up. It flew at close range around my head, bobbing up and down like a carousel ride at the amusement park, and I watched it, believing it was admiring me as much as I was admiring it. And then it landed on the pavement in the space where I had just moved my vehicle out of. And before I could say, "No, over there," the three year-old cat from next door pounced on the creature, disabling it instantly, ending my adventure photographing the butterfly, but beginning a new one for Tigger. ~ Robert |

children and parents today. radKIDS training gives children the tools
they need to recognize, avoid and escape potentially dangerous
situations, including bullying, assault and abduction. The radKIDS
program is a 12 hour family centered safety education program that
emphasizes essential decision-making skills and physical resistance
options to escape violence. This program is designed for children
from 5-12 years of age. A few of the program components include:
stranger tricks, internet safety, bullying prevention, personal safety,
out and about safety, school safety, and realistic physical defense
skills against abduction.
