LEGISLATORS WELCOME GREEK CULTURAL AND HISTORICAL EXPERT TO BOSTON
(BOSTON) – August 5, 2011 - Senate Minority Leader Bruce Tarr (R-Gloucester), Senator Karen Spilka (D-Ashland), and Representative Carolyn Dykema (D-Holliston) held a reception yesterday at the State House to welcome internationally known businessman and dignitary Spyros Mercouris during his visit to Boston from Greece.
“Spyros Mercouris is a truly inspirational man who rose from political strife and oppression to create personal prosperity that he has in turn used to promote democracy and Greek culture throughout the world,” said Tarr. “He leads us by example to know and understand the virtues of the spirit of Greece and those who prize freedom. Truly it is an honor to welcome him to the State House.”
“Through his various programs and initiatives, Spyros Mercouris has worked for years to show the critical role his country played in the advancement of western civilization and the development of democracy,” said Spilka. ““From his early years as an activist to his current work promoting cultural and historical exhibits, Mr. Mercouris has dedicated his life to being an ambassador for democracy and I was honored to have been able to recognize his work at the State House.”
Mercouris, who is the honorary president of the European Commission’s Capitals of Culture program, used this visit to discuss the work he has done to educate and promote the history of Greece through the use of art, music, and cultural exhibits. His latest exhibit, “Democracy and the Battle of the Marathon,” uses paintings, sculptures, and artifacts to show the impact the Battle of the Marathon played in the development of the Democratic form of government.
"It was an honor to welcome Mr. Mercouris to the State House. His commitment to sharing the history of democracy and the tremendous impact the Battle of Marathon continues to have on our society is inspirational," Dykema said.

Middlesex Savings Bank Announces Hopkinton Graduate Among 2011 Scholarship Winners Charitable Foundation Awards $34,000 to Area Graduates
HOPKINTON, MASSACHUSETTS, August 4, 2011 - Dana M. Neshe, president of the Middlesex Savings Charitable Foundation, today announced that Sarah Miller of Hopkinton has been awarded a 2011 Middlesex Savings Charitable Foundation Scholarship. A graduate of Hopkinton High School, Miller will receive $1,000 to support her studies at Loyola University.
The foundation’s award to Ms Miller was one of 28 scholarship grants in the amount of $1,000 to deserving students from public and vocational schools in the MetroWest area, continuing a tradition that began nine years ago. Recipients are chosen based on academic merit, community service, financial need, and personal and academic improvement. Over a quarter-million dollars has been distributed to date through the program.
Since 2006, The Foundation has also awarded the A. James Lavoie Scholarship. This $5,000 award is named in honor of Mr. Lavoie, former president of Middlesex Bank, who was deeply committed to the support of education. The 2011 Lavoie Scholarship winner is Melanie Josselyn of Natick, a graduate of Joseph P. Keefe Technical High School in Framingham. |

HOPKINTON, MA (August 3, 2011) – Enter Stage Left Theater will be presenting its Summer Stock musical, Urinetown, at the Hopedale High School on August 12, 13, 18, 19, and 20 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $17 for general admission; and $13 for students, seniors and stage door members; and are available at www.enterstagelefttheater.org . “This is a musical comedy that pokes fun at other musicals as well as capitalism, bureaucracy, and the legal system,” said Kelly Grill, executive director at ESL. “Director Michael Geary has done a terrific job with a very talented cast and the result is a very funny show.”
Grill added that the production is made possible by a grant from the Mass Cultural Council. “This grant not only allowed us to continue to grow our Summer Stock program with the goal of providing a strong learning opportunity for high school and college age students who are serious about theater arts, but it also allowed us to bring in Emmy-award-winning set designer Ted Talanian to design the set with Michael and to teach a seminar about set design for the entire cast,” she stated. |

Senior Moments Senior Center Friends Day Nancy L. Drawe

August 3, 2011 — “You’ve Got A Friend,” was once again the theme of last Friday’s annual “Bring a Friend Day” at the Hopkinton Senior Center—their fifth year! Since the first four years of this event were such a huge success, the seniors were once again invited to bring their “little friends” to the center for another fun afternoon. The friends could be grandchildren, nieces, nephews, neighbors, etc. It was cute watching everyone give their grandchildren tours of the place; they all got to see where Grandma and Grandpa come for their own fun time! One of the nice things was to actually meet some of the grandchildren that we hear about so often and to see the “returns” who came back for their fifth year in a row, as well as lots of new little faces.
Previously, the Friends of the Seniors had set up “Game Stations,” where the kids could play such games as Bean Bag Toss, Fishing, Chair Volleyball, etc., but this year, they opted for something a little bit different. This year, they set up “Craft Stations” with lots of stickers, markers, glitter and foam sticky shapes that the kids could use to decorate notepads, bracelets, etc. The glue was flying everywhere, but the kids had a blast! Lunch time was pretty quiet since everyone was eating hamburgers and hot dogs grilled right in the kitchen. It was way too hot outside this year to have people standing over a grill, but it didn’t matter, the kids enjoyed eating in the main dining room just as much! The meal was free for all the kids and only $4.00 per adult. Dessert was yummy ice cream and watermelon! It was too funny, there were lots of little ketchup and watermelon covered faces running around—very cute!
A display table was set up with little prizes that included stuffed animals, books and assorted small toys. Each child got to pick something from the “Prize Table” before they left. That was so exciting for them, looking over everything and deciding which one to pick. Everyone left the center that afternoon with their special prizes and a happy smile, already looking forward to next year for “Bring a Friend Day 6!” A sign of a pretty successful day, don’t you think? Cheers to everyone who made “Bring a Friend Day 5,” such a wonderful time for everyone!

August 2, 2011 — Much like a windsock at an airport or heliport, this flame burning off impurities at the LNG facility on Wilson Street shows the unquestionable direction of the wind in this photo taken from the Hopkinton Reservoir Dam today. The facility, for which this is standard operating procedure, has two burners, this being the larger. Following some thunder in the early evening today, at least one caller, who could see the flame from his vehicle driving on East Main Street, mistakenly reported a possible lightning strike and subsequent fire. That is a common error. |

AREA CRIME Second Suspect Arrested in Sunday Night's Milford Knife Attack
(Milford, MA.) August 2, 2011 - A second
suspect has been arrested in connection with a knife attack on Sunday
night July 31, 2011 approximately 9:27 pm
Detectives learned that the altercation was the result of a debt that the victim owed Godoy who was trying to collect. Godoy also admitted to changing his appearance by cutting his hair and shaving his beard after the incident on Sunday night knowing the police were searching for him. The Bail Commissioner set bail at $25,000.00 for the suspect who was held overnight in lockup and scheduled for arraignment.
The police investigation learned that on Sunday night three individuals had driven to the Valero Gas Station in a pickup truck and the two suspects had engaged the victim leading to the confrontation. The two suspects have swung knives at the suspect and threatened to kill him. The victim evaded them by running into the bathroom where he called police. The victim only received a minor injury with a small cut on one of his fingers. A third subject has been identified and questioned and he was not charged with any crimes. |

individual were throwing objects at moving vehicles on the
