LEGISLATORS WELCOME GREEK CULTURAL AND HISTORICAL EXPERT TO BOSTON

(BOSTON) – August 5, 2011 - Senate Minority Leader Bruce Tarr (R-Gloucester), Senator Karen Spilka (D-Ashland), and Representative Carolyn Dykema (D-Holliston) held a reception yesterday at the State House to welcome internationally known businessman and dignitary Spyros Mercouris during his visit to Boston from Greece.

“Spyros Mercouris is a truly inspirational man who rose from political strife and oppression to create personal prosperity that he has in turn used to promote democracy and Greek culture throughout the world,” said Tarr.  “He leads us by example to know and understand the virtues of the spirit of Greece and those who prize freedom.  Truly it is an honor to welcome him to the State House.”

“Through his various programs and initiatives, Spyros Mercouris has worked for years to show the critical role his country played in the advancement of western civilization and the development of democracy,” said Spilka. ““From his early years as an activist to his current work promoting cultural and historical exhibits, Mr. Mercouris has dedicated his life to being an ambassador for democracy and I was honored to have been able to recognize his work at the State House.”

Mercouris, who is the honorary president of the European Commission’s Capitals of Culture program, used this visit to discuss the work he has done to educate and promote the history of Greece through the use of art, music, and cultural exhibits. His latest exhibit, “Democracy and the Battle of the Marathon,” uses paintings, sculptures, and artifacts to show the impact the Battle of the Marathon played in the development of the Democratic form of government.

"It was an honor to welcome Mr. Mercouris to the State House. His commitment to sharing the history of democracy and the tremendous impact the Battle of Marathon continues to have on our society is inspirational," Dykema said.

Spyros Mercouris was born in Athens, Greece in 1926 and studied law at the University of Athens. He was also an active in the Resistance during the German and Italian occupation and an active member of “Democratic Defense,” a resistance organization during the colonels’ junta in Greece. Executive Director of the Hopkinton Athletic Association and Hopkinton resident, Tim Kilduff accompanied Mr. Mercouris during his visit to Boston. ~ Contributed content

New BBQ Wines Tasting

This week we will sample several wines that are new arrivals and that work nicely with barbecued anything.  Our first two wines are Spanish, a Tempranillo-Cabernet Sauvignon blend and an old vines Garnacha.  The others are from Australia, a Cabernet Sauvignon and a reserve Shiraz.

First, we will sample the 2007 El Molinet from Valencia, Spain.  This wine is produced by a wine cooperative, La Viña Cooperative.  The 2007 El Molinet is a blend of 85% Tempranillo and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon aged for six months in seasoned oak before bottling without filtration.  Purple-colored, the wine has an expressive perfume of cedar, tobacco, mineral, and blackberry.  Smooth-textured and layered, this ripe, spicy wine has a forward personality and a lengthy finish.  This vintage of this wine has garnered a huge amount of press, including Wine Advocate - 90 points and the International Wine Cellar - 90 points.  This excellent grilling wine sells for just $15.99 per bottle, or $153.50 per case. The more dragonflies in an area, the fewer bugs there are that bother humans.

HOPKINTON, MA (August 3, 2011) – Enter Stage Left Theater will be presenting its Summer Stock musical, Urinetown, at the Hopedale High School on August 12, 13, 18, 19, and 20 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $17 for general admission; and $13 for students, seniors and stage door members; and are available at www.enterstagelefttheater.org . Grill added that the production is made possible by a grant from the Mass Cultural Council. “This grant not only allowed us to continue to grow our Summer Stock program with the goal of providing a strong learning opportunity for high school and college age students who are serious about theater arts, but it also allowed us to bring in Emmy-award-winning set designer Ted Talanian to design the set with Michael and to teach a seminar about set design for the entire cast,” she stated.

Senior Center Friends Day

Nancy L. Drawe

      (Punky)

August 3, 2011 — “You’ve Got A Friend,” was once again the theme of last Friday’s annual “Bring a Friend Day” at the Hopkinton Senior Center—their fifth year!   Since the first four years of this event were such a huge success, the seniors were once again invited to bring their “little friends” to the center for another fun afternoon.  The friends could be grandchildren, nieces, nephews, neighbors, etc. It was cute watching everyone give their grandchildren tours of the place; they all got to see where Grandma and Grandpa come for their own fun time!  One of the nice things was to actually meet some of the grandchildren that we hear about so often and to see the “returns” who came back for their fifth year in a row, as well as lots of new little faces.

Previously, the Friends of the Seniors had set up “Game Stations,” where the kids could play such games as Bean Bag Toss, Fishing, Chair Volleyball, etc., but this year, they opted for something a little bit different.  This year, they set up “Craft Stations” with lots of stickers, markers, glitter and foam sticky shapes that the kids could use to decorate notepads, bracelets, etc.   The glue was flying everywhere, but the kids had a blast!  The center now has a ping pong table, so that was a big hit also.  Photo: Lucy D'Urso decorating cards as her dad, Frank, looks on.

Lunch time was pretty quiet since everyone was eating hamburgers and hot dogs grilled right in the kitchen.  It was way too hot outside this year to have people standing over a grill, but it didn’t matter, the kids enjoyed eating in the main dining room just as much!    The meal was free for all the kids and only $4.00 per adult. Dessert was yummy ice cream and watermelon!   It was too funny, there were lots of little ketchup and watermelon covered faces running around—very cute!

A display table was set up with little prizes that included stuffed animals, books and assorted small toys.   Each child got to pick something from the “Prize Table” before they left.  That was so exciting for them, looking over everything and deciding which one to pick.  Everyone left the center that afternoon with their special prizes and a happy smile, already looking forward to next year for “Bring a Friend Day 6!”  A sign of a pretty successful day, don’t you think?

Cheers to everyone who made “Bring a Friend Day 5,” such a wonderful time for everyone!

Don’t forget--the annual cookout at the Laborers Training Center hosted by State Representative Carolyn Dykema will be held on Wednesday, August 17 from 12-2 pm.  Believe me, you won’t want to miss this one; it’s always the cookout of the year!  Everyone has such a good time being entertained with music by a DJ, nice little raffle prizes and especially the great food—hot off the grill.   Carolyn, along with her friends and family do a wonderful job hosting this annual event!   Transportation is available, so when you sign up at the senior center, let them know if you will need a ride.

Birthday lunch!  Second Thursday of the month—this month the date is the 11th, so if your birthday is in August, call the center to sign up and your lunch will be free that day!  Can’t you just taste that delicious birthday cake too?

That’s it for now, so if you have any comments or suggestions, you can email me:  Punkala@aol.com.  Until next time, have a great week!

Windsock

August 2, 2011 — Much like a windsock at an airport or heliport, this flame burning off impurities at the LNG facility on Wilson Street shows the unquestionable direction of the wind in this photo taken from the Hopkinton Reservoir Dam today. The facility, for which this is standard operating procedure, has two burners, this being the larger. Following some thunder in the  early evening today, at least one caller, who could see the flame from his vehicle driving on East Main Street, mistakenly reported a possible lightning strike and subsequent fire. That is a common error.

State Police to Charge 4 Juveniles in Highway Rock-Throwing Incident

(Worcester, MA.) August 2, 2011 - On Saturday July 31, 2011 at 6:30 p.m., the State Police Barracks in Holden began to receive reports that several individual were throwing objects at moving vehicles on the Kelly Square on-ramp to Route 290 eastbound in Worcester.  Several Troopers as well as officers from the Worcester Police Department responded to the area.

Trooper Andrew Daige from the Holden Barracks arrived at the scene and interviewed several victims whose vehicles had received damage from rocks that the suspects had been throwing.  In all, Trooper Daige located approximately 60 golf-ball sized rocks and approximately 10 more rocks the size of softballs that had been thrown at vehicles on the ramp entering Route 290 eastbound.  Several vehicles, which had remained to report their damage, had smashed windshields while several others had damage to the hoods, roofs, and sides of their vehicles.

One of the victims chased the suspects and with the assistance of Worcester Police Officers, was able to locate and identify four juvenile suspects.  Trooper Davidson Lamarre interviewed the male juveniles and they admitted to having thrown the rocks at traffic.

Follow-up investigation by Trooper Daige identified several more victims for a total of twelve vehicles having sustained damage from the rocks thrown by these juveniles.  Trooper Daige also conducted follow-up interviews with the offenders and has determined the charges appropriate for this matter.  The charges against the four juveniles, all between the ages of 9 and 11, will be forthcoming later today.

August 2, 2011 — Director/Conductor Steve Yavarow's baton is a blur as he conducts the Hopkinton Community Summer Band at the Common on Sunday. The band rehearses for six weeks during spring and summer, and then comes to life for one performance on the Common each summer.

HELP! at Hopkinton Concert on the Common Sunday, August 7

HOPKINTON, MA – For those who crave cool summertime musical fun, now there’s HELP! New England’s premier Beatles tribute band HELP! is coming to Hopkinton on Sunday, August 7, as part of the free summer concert series. The show starts at 5 PM and runs until 7:30 on the Hopkinton Common. And yes, we would like you to dance!

What makes babies bounce and clap to "Yellow Submarine?" or "Twist & Shout?" Whatever it is, that same magic revs up their older siblings and their parents and grandparents too. The whole family grooves to the great sounds of the Beatles. (Video, left, from 2009 performance. No there is no lip-synching; they are singing live!).

Some things just keep getting better, like the Beatles’ hits – and HELP!, the region’s longest-running and best (at least, according to their mums) Beatles tribute band. For more than 20 years, HELP! has been delighting all ages at nightspots, festivals, and town concerts throughout New England and beyond.

HELP!’s lineup includes Mike Rolla of Maynard on bass and Marc Hertzberg of Sudbury on keyboards and guitar. Chris Hylander of Waltham on drums, and Mark Poulin of Amesbury on guitar round out the quartet.

Each musician performs songs associated with one of the Fab Four, including some intriguing and seldom-heard archival and novelty material for a glimpse into the history of Britain’s most famous band. Sets change regularly, dipping into the huge Beatles catalog and even some of the later, solo music.

HELP! plays it all live (without recordings), for a faithful reproduction that captures the sound and the enthusiasm – and those amazing harmonies – that rocked the 1960s. Through a unique combination of authentic vintage equipment and modern electronics, HELP! brings to life many hits the Beatles themselves performed only in the studio.

The fans, from toddlers to grandparents, as they dance, sing along, sway and shout, are as much a part of the scene as the guys on stage. HELP! really loves this music and this audience – and it shows. ~ From HELP!
