School Committee Splits Interim Superintendent Vote

Hires Steven Hiersche

by Muriel Kramer

July 19, 2012 — The School Committee voted last night to hire Steven Hiersche as interim superintendent for the coming year pending successful contract negotiations; the vote was 3 in favor and 2 opposed. At its last meeting the Committee had decided to move 1 finalist forward in the process, Steven Hiersche, and has since conducted extensive reference checks.

Rebecca Robak began the discussion by citing the favorable references received. She added, “I think he has a lot of favorable experience regarding our goals.” In particular she highlighted his experience with contract negotiations, with the Massachusetts School Building Authority (MSBA) process and with the new supervision and assessment standard that is to be implemented this year in Hopkinton.

Scott Aghababian, School Committee Vice-Chair, agreed that no issues came up on the references. “I just don’t feel a great connection from a vision standpoint. But we’re looking for someone to help us carry the ball for the next year.”

Jon Graziano spoke specifically to having concerns. “He has a lot of the experience we are looking for. The need for long term vision is muted by the one year circumstance we are facing.” He then spoke to concerns that the process as designed might have limited the pool of candidates. “I wonder if it’s the process that kept us from getting the candidate I envisioned. While he may be the best candidate of who we have in front of us, he might not be the best candidate. I remain unconvinced we have the right candidate.”

Jean Bertschmann spoke in Hiersche’s favor. She focused on Hiersche’s experience and skill with the budget process and his ability to build strong relationships with colleagues working in Town Hall. According to Bertschmann, Hiersche has experience and has been successful working in towns, Watertown and Framingham as examples, where the environment has been politically divisive and difficult.

Nancy Alvarez Burdick, School Committee Chairman, indicated that she was unsettled by the discussion so far and stated, “I’m not sure he’s the right person for our community right now.” She continued, “The thing that sticks out in my mind is while there is consistent mention of communication [in the references], it’s not consistently positive.” She added that she also had read that he had come into towns at politically charged or divided times but had noted no miraculous transformation for those towns. She continued by mentioning that there were other processes that could be followed to find candidates.

Robak spoke to the process, “I would be very uncomfortable moving forward with a process that’s less public and transparent. We have a good candidate with good references. This is an interim position, and we need someone quickly. Maybe this isn’t the perfect person given where we are today…but he is qualified.”

Robak made the motion to offer the position to Hiersche, and it was seconded by Bertschmann; Aghababian was the third vote in favor, with Alvarez Burdick and Graziano voting no.

Immediate Sprinkler Ban in Hopkinton - Other Restrictions
This is Eric Carty, Water Manager, with an important water supply advisory for municipal water system users. Please turn off all lawn sprinkler systems immediately and we ask that you minimize all other unnecessary use. Other outdoor use including hand held watering of flowers, shrubs and gardens is currently still permitted before 9AM and after 5PM. It is imperative that everyone adhere to these restrictions, to help maintain adequate water supplies for daily essential needs, to meet firefighting capabilities and to help avoid further outdoor restrictions.

Penalties

For the second offense, any person violating this By-law shall be liable to the Town in the amount of $100.00, which shall inure to the Town for such uses as the DPW Director may direct. In an amazing come from behind win on Thursday night being down by 4 in the top of the 6th, Hopkinton beat favored Westwood in a shootout that went into extra innings with the winner advancing to the District 11 Championship on Friday. After giving up a grand slam on a game that was tied 2-2 heading into the bottom of the fifth, Hopkinton overcame the impossible. With one out, they put up 4 runs in the top of the 6th and then one in the top of the 7th to win their Pool Championship. Hopkinton was heading to the District Championship for the first time since 2007. No team in Hopkinton Little League history has ever won the District Title. The District Championship game was being played this evening in Norwood, Mass.
Friday, July 13, 2012
Some may argue that playing a championship game on Friday, July 13th is nothing short of bad luck. Some may also argue that one of your starting pitchers being hit by a fast ball the night before and breaking his shoulder bone added to that superstition. Hopkinton was heading straight into the District 11 championship game facing Canton, another top seed team. Different night, different team, same story. With Canton up 5-1 going into the top of the 6th with one out (sound familiar), the odds were stacked against Hopkinton. The chances to come from behind being down by 4 with one out in the top of the 6th two nights in a row were next to impossible. Vegas wouldn't touch those odds. Slowly, Hopkinton chipped away. 5-2. 5-3. 5-4. 5-5. 6-5. 7-5. YES. They beat the odds and put up 6 runs in the top of the sixth. With one out in the bottom of the 6th, Canton smashed a long home run to deep right center bridging the gap to 1, but Hopkinton never let up. They played flawless defense the rest of the game to get two more outs and became for the first time ever "MASSACHUSETTS DISTRICT 11 CHAMPIONS".

Congratulations to Ray Leblanc and Hopkinton Little League's Williamsport Team. Please check the Hopkinton Little League Website for further information about the Eastern Mass Championship games.

First Amendment Rights

July 13, 2012 — Above, supporters of perennial candidate for president, Lyndon LaRouche, one who covered her face with her hand when she saw the camera, and one standing behind her, speak with Hopkinton patrolman Patrick O'Brien regarding damage to one of their signs that shows the President of the United States Barack Obama with a Hitler moustache. One sign called for the impeachment of President Obama, another to remove Obama, and another to stop Obama. An individual ran over and damaged the sign laying in the foreground, prompting the call to police.
Congressman Barney Frank, faced with an individual holding a photo of President Obama similarly defaced with a Hitler moustache at a health care seminar said, "...it is a tribute to the First Amendment that this kind of vile, contemptible nonsense is so freely propagated."
An individual approached the photographer in Colella's to inform him about the protesters being on Post Office property after the photo had been taken, and said she thought their techniques influence more people to turn away from their cause than toward it.

It was close enough for the photographer to reach out and capture, proving also, its low place on the food chain.
