Milford Regional Receives Third Gold
Stroke Award
May 24, 2011 — Milford
Regional Medical Center recently received the American Heart
Association/American Stroke Association’s Get With The
Guidelines®–Stroke
Gold Quality Achievement Award for the third consecutive year. The award
recognizes Milford Regional’s commitment and success in implementing a
higher standard of stroke care by ensuring that stroke patients receive
treatment for at least 24 months according to nationally accepted
standards and recommendations.
According to the American
Heart Association/American Stroke Association, stroke is one of the
leading causes of death and serious, long-term disability in the United
States. On average, someone suffers a stroke every 40 seconds; someone
dies of a stroke every four minutes; and 795,000 people suffer a new or
recurrent stroke each year.
Photo: For the third consecutive year, Milford Regional receives the
AHA/ASA GWTG- Stroke Gold Quality Achievement Award. President Ed Kelly
recognizes the stroke team’s accomplishment in this photo. Pictured left
to right: (front row) Annette Roberts, Maria DaSilva, Donna Auger, Dr.
William Tosches, Liz Renzi and Dr. Theresa Arpin, (back row) Pam Vaccari,
Ed Kelly, Dr. Jeff Hopkins, Donna Saul and Dr. Matthew McCauley.
“With a stroke, time lost is
brain lost, and the Get With The Guidelines–Stroke Gold Quality
Achievement Award addresses the important element of time,” said Dr.
Jeffrey Hopkins, medical director of the emergency department at Milford
Regional. “Milford Regional has developed a comprehensive system for
rapid diagnosis and treatment of stroke patients admitted to the
emergency department. This includes always being equipped to provide
brain imaging scans, having neurologists available to
conduct patient evaluations and using clot-busting medications when
appropriate.”
To receive the Get WithThe
Guidelines-Stroke Gold Quality Achievement Award, Milford Regional
demonstrated 85% adherence in the Get With The Guidelines–Stroke key
measures for 24 or more consecutive months. These include aggressive use
of medications like tPA, antithrombotics, anticoagulation therapy, DVT
prophylaxis, cholesterol-reducing drugs, and smoking cessation.
“The American Stroke
Association commends Milford Regional for its success in implementing
standards of care and protocols,” said Lee H. Schwamm, M.D., chair of
the Get With The Guidelines National Steering Committee and director of
the TeleStroke and Acute Stroke Services at Massachusetts General
Hospital in Boston. “The full implementation of acute care and secondary
prevention recommendations and guidelines is a critical step in saving
the lives and improving outcomes of stroke patients.” |

Driver Strikes, Seriously Injures Trooper, Flees
Mass State
Police seeks public's help
The updated
Be-On-the-Lookout (BOLO) is a follows: A black two-door sedan with a
light-colored interior and POSSIBLE aftermarket dark-tinted taillights.
The vehicle is similar to a two-door Honda Civic built in the late 1990s
or early 2000s, but we are not stating definitively that is a Civic.
May
24, 2011 — Today at 9:04 am, a Massachusetts State Trooper was struck
while conducting speed enforcement duties in Boston.
The Trooper was outside his cruiser, on the
ramp to Route 90 Eastbound coming from Route 93 Northbound, prior to the
entrance to the Ted Williams Tunnel. He was signaling a vehicle to stop
and that vehicle struck him and then fled the scene.
Investigators are reviewing video camera
tapes throughout the entire tunnel system to obtain further
information about the suspect vehicle.
The Trooper was seriously injured and was
transported to Boston Medical Center for treatment.
The State Police Collision Analysis Section
and the State Police Crime Scene Service Section have been processing
the scene and the ramps were closed for approximately 1 hour for the investigation.
Based on information obtained, a Be-On-the-Lookout (BOLO) is being
issued for a dark colored, mid-sized sedan, which has right front ¼
panel damage.
Anyone with information regarding the suspect vehicle is asked to
contact State Police Investigators at (508) 820-2121.
Two witness vehicles were identified; a
white or silver colored Toyota Camry and a white van; both of which were
“cut-off” by the suspect vehicle. Those operators are also asked to
contact State Police Investigators. |

Volunteers Sought for New
Flag Installation
Seeing all those brand new American flags ,waving in the breeze at our
town cemeteries ,honoring those veterans buried there, is a sure sign
that Memorial Day is near. This Friday, May 27, the American Legion Post
202 will be replacing over 1000 old, worn, and battered flags with
bright colored new ones.
Every year, there are more veterans' graves, and making sure that all of
them are recognized is a priority for the Legion and all surviving
veterans. In the past, many of Hopkinton's citizens have helped with
this task, and volunteers are needed again this year. Anyone who wishes
to help out, we start at Evergreen at 3:00 PM, and please do not hesitate
to call me if you know of a veteran's grave that was missed. Mike
Whalen 508-435- 2397. |

The Doctors Are
IN
The doctors were in, thanks to Hopkinton
Drug’s efforts to orchestrate an advanced physicians training at the
Newton Wellesley Hospital last month. Led by
guest
lecturer and world renowned physician and author, Dr. Ritchie Shoemaker,
the two day event provided doctors from around the
country insight on protocols and proper treatment options for Mold
illness, Lyme disease, Fibromyalgia, and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.
Compounding pharmacist and President of the
Hopkinton Drug, Dennis Katz, has worked with Dr. Shoemaker for many
years to develop and provide medications for treatment of these
illnesses to doctors throughout the United States. Having met many
patients suffering from these conditions, Katz believes it is imperative
to find solutions for them. He said the doctors who had the opportunity
to attend the seminar will be invaluable practitioners for the group
often left without answers; a driving factor to why his business decided
to follow through with this outreach program.
Hopkinton Drug is intent on improving the
health of the community and it proved so with the Newton seminar. By
providing an educational environment and unifying physicians to improve
treatment options, the Hopkinton business is on the cutting edge for
patient care.

State Police Charge Drugged Driver in Blandford, MA Crash Involving
School Bus
May
20, 2011 — Massachusetts State Police Troopers from the Russell Barracks
yesterday arrested a Blandford man with drugged driving and other
charges related to a head-on crash between his sport utility vehicle and
a school bus.
Troopers charged ROBERT
R. NICHOLS, 50, with operating
under the influence of drugs, negligent operation of a motor vehicle,
and speeding following an investigation into the crash, which occurred at 8:05
a.m. on the northbound side of South Street, near Route 23, in Blandford.
Preliminary investigation by Trooper Mark Rogers indicates that
NICHOLS was operating a 2005 Land Rover southbound on South Street in the
opposing direction of the school bus, which is owned by Lecrenski
Brothers, Inc. bus company of Westfield. The bus was being driven by a
56-year-old Southwick man and carried as passengers four Blandford
students.
Evidence indicates that NICHOLS’ Land Rover
traveled down South Street at an excessive rate of speed,
crossing and re-crossing the center median, and eventually swerved into
the path of the bus. The bus driver braked and turned to the right in an
attempt to avoid a collision but could not avoid the Land Rover.
Four Chester Elementary School students showed no
apparent injuries when examined at the scene by Hilltown EMS. The parent
of one of the children arrived on scene and took custody of that
student. The other three students were transported to Noble Hospital for precautionary reasons in Westfield and later
released to the custody of their parents. The bus driver was also
transported to Noble for precautionary examination.
Troopers, meanwhile, observed NICHOLAS
sitting behind the wheel of the Land Rover appearing sleepy and showing
signs of impairment. NICHOLS suffered minor injuries and was transported
to Noble Hospital.
During a subsequent inventory of the Land
Rover, Trooper Rogers found two pill bottles containing various pills
and tablets. State Trooper Jamie Magarian, a drug recognition expert – a
trooper trained to recognize the physiological effects of drug use –
assisted Trooper Rogers in interviewing NICHOLS. After that interview,
and as a result of all investigative measures, Troopers formed the
opinion that NICHOLS was under the influence of narcotics, placed him
under arrest at the hospital and provided him his Miranda Rights.
Troopers booked NICHOLS and kept him in custody at the hospital until a
Westfield District Court clerk set his bail at personal recognizance.
NICHOLS was discharged from the hospital at approximately 4 p.m.
yesterday. |

State Police Arrest Two in Hingham, Seize Marijuana
May 19, 2011 — At 3:11 a.m. today,
Massachusetts State Troopers, while on patrol on Route 3 southbound in Hingham, observed a 2009
Toyota Camry taxi cab that had defective illumination on its rear
license plate and that changed lanes without signaling.
Trooper Dennis Lynch from the State Police
Barracks in Norwell and Trooper Matthew Hannigan from the State Police
K9 Section, and his K9 partner Zander, conducted a motor vehicle stop
and approached the taxi. Troopers observed two men in the back seat
texting on cell phones. The passengers said they were traveling from
South Station in Boston to Plymouth.
The Troopers detected the odor of burned
marijuana coming from inside the car, and observed that both men
appeared to be nervous as they handed the Troopers their
identifications. Troopers identified the passengers as CHRISTOPHER M.
BARNES, 23, of East Falmouth, and CHARLES E. TIMBERS, 27, of Watertown.
Trooper Hannigan and Zander then did an
exterior scan of the car, and Zander alerted to the Camry’s trunk. Due
to heavy rain, the Troopers then directed the taxi driver to drive off
the highway, and he did so and parked under the front overhang of a
nearby Home Depot store.
TIMBERS and BARNES were advised of their
Miranda rights and taken into custody. During a search of the cab’s
trunk, State Police found a large suitcase containing green vegetable
matter believed to be marijuana. The approximate weight was 13 ½ pounds.
We will attempt to provide a photo of the drugs in the near future.
The defendants were booked at the Norwell
Barracks and were expected to be arraigned in Hingham District Court
today. |
