Passenger Removed from Logan Plane Following Alleged Disturbance

January 3, 2011 — Massachusetts State Police have arrested US Air passenger OGNJEN MILATOVIC, 37, of Hudson on charges of disorderly conduct and interfering with operation of an aircraft after he caused a disturbance on Flight 2025 waiting to depart Gate 21 at Logan Airport to Regan Airport in Washington D.C. this morning. MILATOVIC refused to comply with a flight attendant’s instructions on board the plane. MILATOVIC refused to take his seat and refused to place his carry-on luggage into an overhead bin. Further, a passenger reported hearing a strong noise coming from a plastic bag MILATOVIC was carrying when he finally did put it in the bin. A passenger also reported that MILATOVIC made a furtive movement and a quick cell phone call, stating into the phone: “I have boarded.”

State troopers removed MILATOVIC from the plane. A State Police K9 checked both the plastic bag he had put into the overhead bin and his checked luggage, which had been removed from the plane. The dog’s inspection had negative results. Following interviews with the pilot, flight attendant and passengers, State Police placed MILATOVIC under arrest.

The flight was delayed for more than hour during the investigation. MILATOVIC was booked at the State Police Logan barracks and is expected to be arraigned at the East Boston District Court.

Tap Water vs. Bottled Water

And the winner is...

by Elizabeth Eidlitz

January 3, 2011 — “Thousands have lived without love, not one without water,” wrote poet W.H. Auden. Because experts have recommended that we drink at least 6-8 glasses of water each day, plastic water bottles, often labeled with exotic names and mountain stream scenes, have become   daily traveling companions for many who believe that the contents are purer and safer than tap water.

The reality, however, according to the Union of Concerned Scientists, the leading science-based nonprofit working for a healthy environment and a safer world, is that tap water is actually held to more stringent quality standards than bottled water, and that some brands of bottled water are just tap water in disguise.

Dasani, bottled in Tualitin, Oregon, is Willamette River water, which goes through the water treatment plant there and is sent to the Coca-Cola plant. “I believe they use the Reverse Osmosis Process to take out any color or smell,” says Donna Russell, a retired Intel engineer and local water advocate. Similarly, Pepsi’s Aquafina is nothing more than tap water further purified, and two gallons of water are wasted in the purification process for every bottled gallon.

The Federal Safe Drinking Water Act empowers the environmental protection agency (EPA) to require water testing by certified laboratories and to report violations.   Public water systems must also provide reports to customers about the source of their water, evidence of contaminants and compliance with regulations.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA), on the other hand, regulates bottled water as a food and cannot require certified lab testing or violation reporting.  Furthermore, FDA doesn’t require bottled water companies to disclose where the water came from, how it was treated or what contaminants it contains.

When The Natural Resources Defense Council tested more than 1,000 bottles of 103 brands of bottled waters, it found that a third of them contained contaminants such as arsenic and carcinogens.

Drinking distilled, reverse osmosis or purified water on a regular basis, is potentially more dangerous than drinking tap water because the bottled waters are referred to as “dead water,” says David Tippie, President Nature-O-Path, Anti-Aging Clinic Assoc. Inc. “They not only have no chemicals in them, they have no minerals either, thus this type of water attracts your body’s minerals and removes them through your waste systems.  The most toxic commercial beverages that people consume (i.e. sodas and other manmade drinks) are made from purified water.”

Tippie urges us to examine the bottom of a plastic bottle for a small triangle in which there is a number. The numbering system normally is from 1 to 7. Although Zero is the worst, One is not far above the worst grade of plastic that leeches out Organochlorines into the contained water.  In fact, even the very best plastic, the number 7, is polycarbonate and is only good for about 14 days worth of storage, not in direct sunlight.

Why pay for bottled water costing 240 to 10,000 times more per gallon than tap water ($0.002 per gallon), when tap water is as good, or better, and far more monitored?

Additionally, enough oil and energy to fuel a million cars a year are used to make U.S. plastic water bottles, 80% of which get thrown away rather than recycled, thus creating a plastic bottle problem the size of Texas underneath our ocean, according to Jonatha King, a Glacier Water Company representative.

As a better alternative to plastic, glass or aluminum bottles, Karen Vieira, owner of the Med Writers Company, recommends filling stainless steel water bottles -- 100% recyclable, durable, almost as lightweight as plastic and free from chemicals like BPA --with tap water.

Don’t like its taste?   Unsure of its quality? Buy a filter pitcher or install an inexpensive faucet filter to remove trace chemicals and bacteria.

A New Year's Eve to Remember - 2006

January 2, 2011 — Inky Fair and Doug Betschart performed as their acoustic version of Back Pages, a two-man band that also performs with drums and full electric, in the video above, taped on December 31, 2006 at Catch 22 in Ashland. The two musicians are well known for performing in a trio called Fair, Yates and Betschart with Tom Yates for about five years as the house band at Timothy Spirits in Framingham into the 80's.

Doug plays various guitars as well as sings lead and backup, and for a real treat, he plays bass on pedals with his feet. inky is the lead and backup vocalist and the group's percussionist. The whole is greater than the sum of its parts when these two sing together with rich harmonies and 35 years of experience performing together.

Although HopNews had taped, processed and uploaded video nearly since it inception in 2003, the video above was the first uploaded to HopNews' YouTube account. It has been viewed over 1,700 times.

Design Review Board Sees Plan for New Hillers Cleaners

by Robert Falcione*

December 29, 2010 — The Design Review Board saw for the first time Tuesday evening preliminary drawings for the proposed new Hiller's Cleaners that will be built following the demolition of Hitchings Hardware at 63 Main Street, if all goes as planned. Hillers owner George Vrahliotis, who has a purchase and sale agreement for the property with the current owner, would like to break ground early in 2011. The agreement is contingent on all necessary permits being granted.

Mr. Vrahliotis said he would like to keep the "Hiller look and feel."

The board gave kudos to Mr. Vrahliotis for doing so well on hi first "go-around," but said they would like more specifics at the next meeting; elevations and views from all sides.

Mr. Vrahliotis said it would be the best looking building in town.

"Hey, hey," objected Steven Zieff lightheartedly, and to laughter in the room. Mr. Zieff is the project manager for the Legacy Farms Project and was on hand for a submission of his own.

Hillers Cleaners is currently located west of the proposed location, in a space that is leased from the former owner of that business.

The new site where Hitchings Hardware has been for decades will need a demolition of the current building, a process that requires a demolition permit.

The Town of Hopkinton has a bylaw that allows the Historical Commission to institute a six month demolition delay on structures 75 years-old or older that have significant architectural features and are structurally sound. If the Historical Commission determines the structure should not be demolished, they would invite the builder in to discuss alternatives. If the builder can hold out for the six months, the delay expires and he may demolish if all other requirements are met regardless.

Although the hardware building houses the business as well as residences, it is not built to today's standards and suffered damage when the building next door exploded several years ago.

It is unlikely that the town would impose a demolition delay on such a building.

* Design Review asked that image above be changed to the current one.

HPTA leadership Forms Separate Political Committee

"To persuade Hopkinton voters to fund the construction of a new elementary school at Fruit Street."*

December 28, 2010 — HPTA President Cindy Bernardo (File photo, right), Vice-President Esther Driscoll, Communications Chair Amy Ritterbush (File photo, left) and newcomer to this process Tara Sanda, have formed a Ballot Question Committee, which is much like a Political Action Committee, but only for ballot questions. The official name is "The Ballot Question Committee for Hopkinton's New Elementary School." According to Chapter 55 of the Massachusetts General Laws, a committee of this category is barred from supporting candidates.

In order to collect funds or in kind donations, the group had to form the Committee and file with the Town Clerk, which they did on December 23, 2010, and announced yesterday in a press release, which stated in part:

According to Cindy Bernardo, Chairman of The Ballot Question Committee for Hopkinton’s New Elementary School, the Committee will organize informational neighborhood coffees and events, and promote the School Committee’s Informational Forums so that the community has an opportunity to learn: why this building project is important, why moving to neighborhood schools can provide a beneficial learning environment for our children, and why it is financially advantageous to build a new school now.

The group has planned events to coincide with the School Committee's promotional drive that will begin in January. Anyone wishing to help may contact the main coordinator, Cindy Bernardo: 508-497-9458 or cindybernardo@hotmail.com

EDITOR'S NOTE: Discuss your take on it, memories of a previous blizzard, and conditions on your street on Town Talk.

Unfortunately, whiteout conditions are not photographable, as the very definition means that everything is white and there is no visibility. But if a reader has a photo to share taken from the shelter of their home as the storm progresses, please send it along. Those born before 1978 would be wise to heed the warnings and stay indoors. In 1978 the governor of Massachusetts declared an emergency and ONLY essential services were allowed on the roadways. The Blizzard of 1978 halted commerce for days, clogs roadways and stranded motorists on road across Massachusetts. Although the forecast is for around 27" average snowfall, the driving winds can cause snow drifts several feet high against buildings, stranded vehicles and roadsides.
