Loyola University Maryland Mourns Loss of Hopkinton Native, HHS Grad, Evan Girardi
Girardi, a native of Hopkinton, Mass., and a graduate of Hopkinton Junior/Senior High School, was a business major concentrating in marketing, with a minor in political science. In the spring of 2010, he participated in Loyola’s study abroad program in Rome, Italy. He was a member of the Loyola Marketing Association and area president of the Cell Phones for Soldiers community service project. He also engaged in community service while studying in Rome.
He is survived by his parents, Michael and Barbara, and three sisters: Paige, Maddie, and Elle.
While the cause of Girardi’s death is not known, he did have a heart condition diagnosed at birth.
“The thoughts and prayers of the entire Loyola University Maryland community are with the Girardi family in this time of loss,” said University President Brian F. Linnane, S.J. “Each one of our students plays a very important role in building the character of this University, and Evan’s death leaves us irrevocably changed. He will be missed, and remembered with great fondness.”

radKIDS, Children's Safety Course Returns!
The next radKIDS class will be held over the course of four Saturdays, Saturday, Sept. 18, Oct. 2, 16 & 23 from 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm each day at 6 Main Street, Hopkinton (the John Warren Masonic Lodge). The cost for the class is $90 per child ($60 for a sibling). The Freemasons of the John Warren Masonic Lodge have graciously donated their space for the radKIDS classes to be held.
A free return and practice policy is honored at radKIDS classes across the country. Once a child has taken the radKIDS class, they can enroll in any radKIDS class, free of charge up to the age of 12, for as many times as they would like.

There are 4 possible scenarios for the future library.

double the size of the lot, the the additional costs to move the library out of the building and set up a temporary home elsewhere during construction, then move back to the new building when it is completed.
Use of a 4 acre parcel of land behind Claiflin Place is not considered a desirable option because the site is land-locked, and would require the Town to acquire additional land to provide roadaccess to the site.
If Center School becomes vacant, moving the library into Center School would keep the library in a prominent location, and provide the needed 65 parking spaces. However, the school’s floors were not built to handle heavy bookstacks, and parts of the school (but the historic building) would need to be removed and rebuilt.
There is enough land behind Center School to build a new, separate Library building, along with more than the required parking spaces for the library.
The Library Feasibility study is scheduled to be completed by September 20. The purpose of the Feasibility Study is to evaluate the options for a Library project that may be eligible for a Grant from the Massachusetts Library Construction Grant Program. |

Greenwood Road Block Party
September 6, 2010 — Greenwood Road Residents showed even greater generosity this year by inviting not only their neighbors, but the neighbors on some of the surrounding streets. Somehow, the kids had a few moments in between hamburgers, hot dogs, ribs, and brownies, games, toys and tug-of-war, to pose with the Hopkinton Firefighters who brought one of their own toys to the party. |

Several Accidents in Hopkinton
September 3, 2010 — Three accidents, one at West Main and Lumber Streets, above, one on Ash Street, below, and one on Pond Street occurred within a brief period of time and had the emergency services going in all directions. The crash above was a two-car accident — the SUV that apparently t-boned the vehicle above was behind the photographer during the shot. An occupant of that vehicle was taken to MetroWest Medical Center. In the car vs. pole crash below, a young male was being evaluated for neck trauma in the ambulance as the photo was taken. The Pond Street crash was not photographed due to other pressing needs.

The purpose of the Feasibility Study is to determine an appropriate site for a Library that meets the current and future needs of residents in Hopkinton. The Hopkinton Library Building Program, completed in 2008, determined that Hopkinton Public Library should have larger areas for book, audio/visual and media collections as well as new technology, reading and quiet study areas, a young adult area, expanded children’s room and children’s program room, a large meeting room for Library programs and events, and be fully handicapped accessible. A site of at least 2 acres is needed to fit the proposed 26,000 square foot building, along with needed parking.
According to the Hopkinton Library Building Program (online and www.hopkintonlibrary.org ), many public areas of the current Library are undersized by at least two hundred percent (200%). The last renovation/expansion of Hopkinton’s Library was in the 1960’s.

Hockey Player from Hopkinton Top Scorer
September 3, 2010 — Teddy Doherty from Hopkinton, MA recently competed with Team USA’s U17 select hockey team at the Five Nations Tournament in Huttwil, Switzerland. Doherty, one of only six defenseman selected by USA Hockey to represent the United States at this international tournament, is an alum of the Hopkinton Jr Hillers hockey program.
Prior to his selection to the national U17 team, Teddy participated in the USA Hockey national development camp in Rochester, NY, impressing members of the national selection committee and emerging as one of the top rated defenseman at camp. Team USA finished first at the Five Nations Tournament with a 3-1 record; the tournament included teams from Czech Republic, Slovakia, Switzerland and Germany.
Doherty was the leading scorer among Team USA defensemen with 1G, 3A and second in scoring among all defensemen in the tournament. Doherty recently returned to Shattuck-St. Mary’s Prep School in MN, where he is entering his junior year. He has verbally committed to Boston College and will be a member of the 2012-2013 hockey team. |

Dr. Phelan, Dr. Colombo to Retire
by Derek Dobachesky September 3, 2010 — The Hopkinton School Committee introduced new members of the school administration and announced superintendent Dr. John Phelan’s upcoming retirement at its first meeting of the 2010-2011 school year last night. The School Committee also heard an update on the status of the construction of a new Elementary School and updated began the process of updating its sexual harassment and internet usage policies. The School Committee welcomed the following new members of the administrators: Ashoke Ghoush, assistant principal at the high; Robert Berlo, director of secondary education; David Ljungberg, assistant principal at Hopkins and Elmwood Schools; Greg Martineau, principal of Hopkins School; and Ralph Dumas, director of finance and operations. The Committee also welcomed new faculty members Jean Vazza, the town’s new Youth Services Director, and Jiling Pan, a new Mandarin Chinese and Chinese culture teacher at the high school. In contrast to the new faces in Hopkinton schools, the School Committee heard Dr. Phelan announce that he had submitted his one-year retirement notice in June. Assistant Superintendent Dr. Mary Colombo will also be retiring, She has indicated she will accept an extension of her contract pending the district hiring a replacement. In announcing his retirement, Dr. Phelan said that when he accepted his position in Hopkinton 11 years ago, “I made what I consider the best decision in my career coming here.” Dr. Phelan said one benefit of announcing his retirement so far in advance was the ability to participate in the transition process of finding and hiring a new superintendent while continuing to make progress on the district’s strategic goals. “Good school districts don’t run in place,” Dr. Phelan said. Dr. Phelan spoke about the beginning of the school year, addressing what he said were some minor glitches in the schools’ database that resulted in some kindergarten students not being picked up by their buses on Wednesday. School Committee Chair Rebecca Robak reported on the status of the Elementary School building project. Robak said that she believed the Massachusetts School Building Authority would approve schematic designs in January. Following this, the town would hopefully convene a special town meeting in February or March to approve construction of the building, rather than waiting until the annual town meeting in May. If all goes as planned, Dr. Phelan predicted the school could be completed and opened in September 2013. Dr. Phelan reported the various maintenance projects completed over the summer. These include the repaving of Loop Road and the repainting of common areas in the Middle School. The water heater at the High School has also been replaced with a new one in which the boiler and water tank are separate, which will result in fewer and less expensive maintenance calls, and the light poles at the High School have been repainted. Ongoing projects include replacing doors and related hardware at the High School and repairing the roof at Elmwood School. Elmwood School is seeking bids in its project to replace one or both of its boiler, while construction of a new playground at Center School is set to begin. The new playground will be funded partly by the Hopkinton Parent Teachers Association and the Center School Gift Account, with completion projected for this winter. Dr. Mary Colombo and School Committee member Jean Bertschmann presented preliminary drafts of the School Committee’s new sexual harassment and internet acceptable usage policies. The new sexual harassment policy specifically addresses sexual by and of students, which the old one did not. It also makes the Director of Human Resources responsible for investigating and taking action on incidence of sexual harassment between faculty and a Civil Rights Administrator for incidence involving students. The policy also ensures that, immediately following reports of sexual harassment, the victim of the alleged harassment will be protected by preventing contact with the alleged harasser. The biggest change in the new internet acceptable usage policy is the inclusion of electronic devices—including smart phones, iPod Touches and other such devices. The policy makes clear that there is no expectation of privacy on any school-owned hardware, and that inappropriate usage of the internet will result in a student being banned from the school’s network. The Hopkinton School Committee will hold its next meeting on Thursday, September 16 at 7:30 p.m. in the Middle School Library. |

Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency and Hopkinton Fire Department OfferTIPS AS HURRICANE EARL APPROACHES
“Early planning and preparation can be the key to your safety,” states MEMA Acting Director Kurt Schwartz. “It is important to use your time wisely and not wait until the last minute.”
Here are some examples of steps you should be taking:
· Trim back trees and shrubbery around your home. Remove diseased or damaged tree limbs that could be blown down, causing damage, during a storm. · Clear clogged rain gutters. Hurricanes/tropical storms often bring torrential rain. Providing clear drainage will help prevent misdirected flooding. · Bring in outdoor items to bring inside such as lawn furniture, trash barrels, hanging plants, toys and awnings that can be broken or picked up by strong winds and used as a missile. · Make sure storage sheds, children’s playhouses or other outbuildings are securely anchored, either to a permanent foundation or with straps and ground anchors. · Elevate articles in your basement that could be damaged from even minor flooding. · Make temporary plywood covers to protect windows and sliding doors. Drill holes for screws or lag bolts in each cover and around each window. Note: Taping of windows does not prevent them from breaking. · Keep you vehicles fully fuelled. · Have a certain amount of cash available. If power is lost, ATMs may not be working. · Make a record of your personal property. Keep an itemized list of your furniture, clothing and valuables to assist adjusters in case of a claim. Back it up with photographs or video. · Protect your insurance policies and other important documents in a secure place like a safe deposit box or a watertight box. Many people back up important documents online. · Learn where gas pilots and water mains are located and how to safely shut off all utilities. · Lock doors and windows to ensure that they are closed tight to help protect against strong winds and rain.

The Hortons have decided to award the remainder of the fund to the CAA, ESL, and the Healing Garden, as their family continues their lifelong healing process. Although over two dozen artists are part of the exhibit, Rory's prolific work fills one room, and then some, at the CAA building. And contrary to the oft-repeated adage that art must be viewed from afar, Rory's genius is also in the details; his style is apparently inspired by the creator of the Alien movie character, with perhaps a touch of The Borg from Star Trek, Next Generation. Expressions for Healing will continue through September 25 at the CAA building, 98 Hayden Rowe Street, Hopkinton Below, is a detail from a Rory Horton drawing.

Hopkinton Finishes Paying $3,885,795 to Milford "to date"
The Town of Hopkinton is pleased to announce its final payment in the amount of $1,385,795 pursuant to the terms of the Intermunicipal Agreement (IMA) for Wastewater Collection, Treatment and Disposal between the Town of Hopkinton and the Town of Milford. With this payment, Hopkinton has now paid a total of $3,885,795 fulfilling its financial obligation under the IMA relative to costs incurred by Milford to date. This project will allow for the expansion of the town’s commercial businesses along South Street. The check was delivered to the Milford Water and Sewer Treatment facility on August 30, 2010. |

August 31, 2010 — Massachusetts State Police arrested 31 drunk drivers in a pair of sobriety checkpoints and related saturation patrols over the weekend, part of the department’s ongoing operations against impaired drivers.
On Saturday night,
troopers in and around
Massachusetts State Police will run three more saturation patrols or checkpoints in coming nights – Thursday in Suffolk County, Friday in Worcester County and Saturday in Essex County.
The sobriety checkpoints and saturation patrols, an important component of the State Police Department’s multi-pronged road safety strategy, are funded by grants provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and distributed through the Highway Safety Division of the state Executive Office of Public Safety and Security. |

E. coli found in ground beef shipped to BJ's Wholesale Club August 31, 2010 — According to United States Dept of Agriculture, ground beef shipped to eight northern states could be contaminated with E. coli, a bacteria that can cause serious illness, and even death. Hopkinton residents who shop at locally owned and operated Colella's Supermarket are spared the recall, because the market does not purchase any of that product, but grinds all of their ground beef on site from hung meat. |

For 10 years, the Rory D Horton Arts scholarship has been awarded to HHS students who were continuing their schooling in the arts field. The Horton family has now decided to donate the remaining monies to the CAA (Cultural Arts Alliance), the Healing Garden being developed by the Hopkinton Garden Club, and ESL (Enter Stage Left Theater) to aid in the growth of the arts in Hopkinton.
As a continuation of the family's healing, an exhibit of Rory’s works and recipients of his scholarship, as well as family and friends, is being held from Sept. 1-25 at the CAA. An opening reception is on Sept. 1 from 6:30 to 9:00. Hopkinton native Dan Cloutier of Birch Beer records will be performing at 7:00.

Mass. (August 2010) – Temple Beth Torah’s Rabbi Earl Kideckel
invites young families from the surrounding communities to join together
on Thursday, September 9 from 4:00 – 5:00 pm to usher in the Jewish New
Year. This special child-friendly Rosh Hashanah service will be held in
the sanctuary of Temple Beth Torah, located at 2162 Washington Street,
Holliston, and is intended for families with children birth to ten
years. The Rosh Hashanah service will be followed by Tashlich, held at
