The initials stand for EMC Cricket Club, which is a group that now has its home field at Cornell's, and will play other teams each Saturday. State Police Fugitive Unit Captures Suspect in Salisbury Home Invasion

August 20, 2010 — The Massachusetts State Police Violent Fugitive Apprehension Section tracked a suspect in a violent Salisbury home invasion to his New Hampshire apartment, where he was taken into custody yesterday.

State Police fugitive unit troopers observed JOSE SANTANA, 19, of Nashua, N.H., running from one apartment to another when they arrived at his 12 Mulberry St. building. SANTANA ultimately surrendered without incident. He is charged with warrants out of the Newbury District Court for home invasion, armed robbery, and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.

The State Police Violent Fugitive Apprehension Section tracked SANTANA to that address with the assistance of a state trooper assigned to the Attorney General’s Office.

SANTANA was wanted by Salisbury Police for his role in a July 17 armed home invasion in which the victim suffered broken ribs, a concussion and head lacerations. Three co-defendants were previously arrested.

SANTANA will be returned to Massachusetts to answer to his crimes. A Nashua, N.H., Police Department tactical unit assisted in his arrest.

Street closed

August 20, 2010 — A call to the police at 11:02 am alerted them of this accident on East Street, just past the intersection with Clinton Street. The dump truck took the corner and snapped the pole in two, according to statements made at the scene. Verizon and NSTAR are on scene making the necessary repairs, but the road is only open from the other direction up to Laborers Training Center, and not accessible from Clinton Street at this time (11:50 am).

August 20, 2010 — Doris Carver, a member of the Senior Center's Volunteer Advisory Board, dances with a singer from last night's a cappella group, Street Magic, which performed for the dinner given by the Friends of the Seniors to thank the nearly 200 volunteers that put time in for the needs of the seniors. The dinner was prepared and served by TJ's of Ashland.

August 19, 2010 — No, this is not a Lunar Orbiter or a Space Shuttle that went off course. The airplane's path was apparently going to take it between the Moon and the photographer's camera at dusk today, a fortuitous circumstance which the photographer had long been hoping for.

Second Case of EEE in a Horse from Worcester County in 2010

BOSTON — August 19, 2010 - The Department of Public Health (DPH) today reported a 3-year-old horse from Lancaster has been diagnosed with eastern equine encephalitis (EEE). EEE infection was confirmed by the State Laboratory Institute today. He developed symptoms on August 12 and died the following day. A horse from Warren, also in Worcester County, was diagnosed with EEE earlier this summer.

A Rhode Island resident was diagnosed with EEE this past weekend and was likely exposed to the virus in the area of southeastern Massachusetts designated as high risk. EEE is usually spread to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito. EEE is a serious disease in all ages and can even cause death.

“These horse cases bring our attention to the risk of human disease”, said DPH State Epidemiologist Dr. Alfred DeMaria. “Historically, Worcester County has been an area of low, but not zero, risk for EEE while WNV presents a greater risk. What this emphasizes is the need for people to take precautions against mosquitoes no matter where they live in Massachusetts.”

People have an important role to play in protecting themselves and their loved ones from illnesses caused by mosquitoes.

Avoid Mosquito Bites

Be Aware of Peak Mosquito Hours. The hours from dusk to dawn are peak biting times for many mosquitoes. Consider rescheduling outdoor activities that occur during evening or early morning.
Clothing Can Help Reduce Mosquito Bites. Wearing long-sleeves, long pants and socks when outdoors will help keep mosquitoes away from your skin.
Apply Insect Repellent when outdoors. Use a repellent with DEET (N, N-diethyl-m-toluamide), permethrin, picaridin (KBR 3023), oil of lemon eucalyptus [p-methane 3, 8-diol (PMD)] or IR3535 according to the instructions on the product label. DEET products should not be used on infants under two months of age and should be used in concentrations of 30% or less on older children. Oil of lemon eucalyptus should not be used on children under three years of age.

Mosquito-Proof Your Home

Drain Standing Water. Mosquitoes lay their eggs in standing water. Limit the number of places around your home for mosquitoes to breed by either draining or discarding items that hold water. Check rain gutters and drains. Empty any unused flowerpots and wading pools, and change water in birdbaths frequently.
Install or Repair Screens. Keep mosquitoes outside by having tightly-fitting screens on all of your windows and doors.

It's Official! Board of Public Works Abolished

Ending a contradiction of purpose, the Governor has signed the Bill that abolished the Hopkinton Board of Public Works. The motion authorizing the Board was passed at the same Town Meeting that authorized the Town Charter that gave authority over hiring the DPW Director to the Town Manager, which was at odds with the well-intentioned creation of the Board.

More Sandy Beach Results Later Today

August 19, 2010 — Public Health Administrator Ed Wirtanen said this morning that after receiving two of three test results on Tuesday at 1:30 pm that exceeded acceptable levels of E Coli bacteria, he closed the beach at Sandy Island. Those samples were taken on Monday.

Mr. Wirtannen said that flocks of geese have been seen in the area, but that any warm-blooded animal could be causing the results that are indicative of "sewage."

Further results should be in today. Stay tuned for an update.

Seniors Feted at Laborers Training Center

August 18, 2010 — State Senator Karen Spilka addresses the senior citizens attending the Annual Senior Picnic for the district of State Representative Democrat Carolyn Dykema, looking on, at New England Laborers Training Center in Hopkinton.

The tradition was started by former Representative Barbara Gardner, a Democrat, and continued by Representative Paul Loscocco, who was a Republican at the time, but is now running as an independent for Lt. Governor with State Treasurer Tim Cahill as his running mate for Governor. In addition to the politicians already mentioned above, Representative from the Third Congressional District of Massachusetts, Democrat Jim McGovern also attended. Mr. McGovern, Mr. Loscocco and Mrs. Dykema spoke to HopNews readers on video, which will appear above after processing.

Fruit Street Fields Almost Ready for Prime Time

Two large multi-use art-turf fields online September 6, 2010

August 18, 2010 — According to Parks and Recreation Chairman, Ken Driscoll (Above), the Fruit Street Fields, artificial turf, will be ready for play on Labor Day weekend. Mr. Driscoll said the two fields are suitable for soccer, lacrosse and if needed, football.

HYSA (Hopkinton Youth Soccer Association) is the primary user, as they took out a $500k loan for the turf.

An adjacent parcel is being prepared for natural turf, but will not be suitable for play until sometime in 2011, after the grass matures, Mr. Driscoll said.

Sandy Beach Closed for Past Two Days

August 18, 2010 — The Board of Health has yet to return a call made to them at 4:45 pm today, but in cases such as this in the past, testing is done daily until the water passes below the bacteria limits.

George Todd, 89

George Todd, 89, of Ashland, MA passed away on Monday, August 16, 2010 at Maine Medical Center in Portland, ME, surrounded by his family.

George was born on November 16, 1920 in Wellesley, MA, the son of George Todd and Irene (Kent) Todd. He was a custom home builder and developer in the MetroWest area. He was very proud to have served his country as a Navy Pilot during World War II in the Pacific.

His gentle, kind, humorous nature was loved by all. He deeply loved his family, his beloved wife of 64 years and his 5 children. Many memorable summers have been spent on Sebago Lake in Maine with his family. Gardening was one of his most relaxing joys in which he spent many hours. He will be greatly missed by so many but is now at peace and looking over us.

He is survived by his wife, Patricia (Donahue) Todd and his 5 children and their spouses, Janet & Vincent Gabrielli of Gold Canyon, AZ; Susan & Robert Brusa of Atkinson, NH; Roberta & James Trombley of Douglas, MA; Jeffrey and Carolyn Todd of Durham, NH and Michael & Susan Todd of Newfields, NH., 13 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

All are welcome to attend graveside services with family and friends to be held on Friday, August 20, 2010, at 10:45 a.m. at the Hopkinton Town Cemetery on Mount Auburn Street in Hopkinton, MA, followed by a memorial service at 11:30a.m. at the Hopkinton Congregational Church Chapel, 146 E. Main St., Hopkinton.

Brian Herr Out of the Gate With Radio Ad

August 18, 2010 — Republican Brian Herr, one of five looking for his party's nod in September to run against Democrat Jim McGovern for the Third Congressional District from Massachusetts, has hit the radio waves with an ad, produced by Jamestown Associates, that touts his experience with government and the private sector.

As well as his experience as a member of Hopkinton's Planning Board, and as Chairman of Hopkinton's Board of Selectmen, Mr. Herr has run a distribution sales force that can generate $50 million in sales.

In addition to his Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Pittsburgh, Mr. Herr has earned a Master's Degree in government from Harvard University.

The other candidates are Robert Chipman of Plainville, Martin Lamb of Holliston, Michael Stopa of Holliston, and Robert Delle of Westboro.

State Police Apprehend Three Robbery Suspects

BOSTON - August 17, 2010 — Today at 3 p.m., troopers assigned to Troop H of the Massachusetts State Police responded to the Museum of Science in Boston on a report of an unarmed robbery that had just occurred. Museum security personnel told State Police that the robbery occurred inside a store within the museum and a large sum of money had been taken.

Troopers converged on the area and quickly shut down traffic in all directions in an effort to locate the suspects. As a result of their immediate response, troopers were able to locate a 2003 Toyota Tacoma pickup truck with a New Hampshire registration, which fit the description of the suspect vehicle.

Three New Hampshire men in the truck were arrested and transported to the State Police Barracks at the Lower Basin for booking. They are identified as JUSTIN LAVALLEY, 24, of Gonic, N.H.; TRAVIS BAKER, 25, of Enfield, N.H., and a 16-year-old boy from Farmington, N.H.

During the arrests, troopers recovered $927. All three men are being charged with unarmed robbery and larceny over $250.

Final $1.25 Million to Milford

August 17, 2010 — This afternoon, the Town of Hopkinton will deliver to the Milford Sewer Commissioners the final payment in the amount of $1,250,000 coming from the state MORE grant for the Hopkinton-Milford sewer connection project. Construction of the Milford-Hopkinton sewer connection is now in progress. This project will allow for the expansion of the town’s sewer system serving commercial businesses along South Street.

Meet and Greet Mandarin Chinese Teacher

August 17, 2010 — On Thursday August 26th from 6:30 to 8:00 pm, Hopkinton High School and the HPTA will host a welcoming reception for the district’s new Chinese teacher, Jiling Pan. Members of the community are encouraged to attend the reception to help welcome Ms. Pan to Hopkinton.

Ms. Pan comes to Hopkinton from Pingxiang, China, where she taught English at Pingxiang High School. She will join Hopkinton High School’s foreign language department for one year to teach Mandarin Chinese language and Chinese culture as well as enrichment classes for the community and the other schools in the district.

The new Mandarin program is part of a district initiative to add Chinese to the high school foreign language program. The American Councils for International Education through its Teachers of Critical Languages Program is funding the first year of the new program. The district was one of only fifteen Chinese language grant awardees in the United States.

Believes Prejudice and Bigotry Are Part of Human Character

Editor:

As Americans we pride ourselves as being free of prejudice and bigotry. However, it's hard for me to view the issue of the mosque a couple of blocks from the WTC site as being fanned by anything but those two elements.

Please note that I'm not accusing those who disagree with me of being bigots. What I'm saying is that those emotions are a part of our character, all of us, and we need to be aware when they are being aroused.

Religious freedom cannot mean freedom for some religions and less freedom for others. You've either got it or you don't. It's easy to talk the talk. It's hard, and takes thought and effort, to walk the walk.

State Police Bomb Squad Called to Logan Lot

August 17, 2010 — At approximately 6 a.m. a Massachusetts state trooper on patrol observed an abandoned car in a Logan Airport lot located off Porter Street, near the Hertz rental car agency, in East Boston. The car, a 2004 Mercury, had an out-of-state registration. The trooper observed several characteristics about the car’s condition that raised suspicion. State Police established a safe perimeter around the area.

The Massachusetts State Police Troop F Explosive Ordinance Detection unit (a.k.a. our bomb squad assigned to Logan Airport) responded to sweep the vehicle for explosives or other hazards. The Massport Fire Department and Boston Police and Fire Departments also responded. An elderly housing complex on nearby Maverick Street was evacuated and several nearby streets were closed for precautionary reasons.

The State Police bomb squad, with the assistance of the Boston Police bomb squad, completed their sweep of the car, including its interior and trunk, at approximately 10:25 a.m. and determined it contained no explosives or other hazards. The car has been towed to the State Police barracks at Logan Airport for follow up investigation by State Police detectives and bomb squad troopers. We have been in contact with the car’s owner. The follow-up is ongoing. Evacuated residents have been allowed back to their apartments. State Police are not releasing any further information – including any identifying information about the car’s owner – at this time.

Central Mass Frenzy 16U

Hopkinton's owns Central Mass Frenzy 16U softball team finished another phenomenal summer season. The team compiled a record of 26 - 3 in route to capturing tournament championships in Somerset, Leominster, Arlington, and Fitchburg. In the last two years, the team has a combined record of 48 - 5 - 1 and won eight tournament championships.
