June 20, 2010 — A cautious passerby phoned safety officials to report a fire on Cedar Street. It turned out to be fog on top of the swamp that is one of the sources of Hopkinton Reservoir. Even the fiery clouds were not mistaken for something else.

June 20, 2010 — Hopkinton resident, former Selectman Muriel Kramer, will be walking in the Susan G Komen 3-Day For The Cure this year July 23-25 in Boston—walking 20 miles each day for 3 consecutive days—to raise money and awareness in the fight against breast cancer. HPTA Spends $135k This Year on Schools

by Heather Kelley

June 18, 2010 — Tonight’s School Committee meeting began with a reorganization of the leadership of the five-member team.  After two years of service, Chair Nancy Burdick stepped down; unanimous votes moved Rebecca Robak into the Chair position and Jean Bertschmann into the Vice-Chair position.

The Committee discussed the recent Newsweek report that ranked Hopkinton High School as 6th in the state and 381st nationwide.  Member Betschmann noted that the rankings are based on the number of students taking AP classes and tests.  “This is a testament to the fact that we really have raised the bar,” remarked Superintendent Phelan.  He went on to share that 48% of the class of 2010 gained acceptance into Barron’s top tier schools.

To support technology infrastructure, the Committee decided to spend $69,000 in new equipment and upgrades.  According to Technology Director Kathy Dooley, this purchase will “future proof” the networks of the schools, provide redundancy that can prevent data loss and outages, and offer the possibility of adding phones to the rooms in the Middle School by using VOIP technology.  Cost savings will also be realized; for example, instead of paying $5600 per year for internet access at Center School, the project will spend $2500 to link Center to the main school complex and the internet access of the new network.  Even if Center is decommissioned in favor of a new Fruit Street school in the future, cost savings would be realized before the move was made to the new school.  The schools will be working in tandem with the town, using bulk buying power and educational discounts to make the joint purchase of equipment and installation.

Cindy Bernardo, President of the HPTA, and Esther Driscoll, incoming Vice-President of the HPTA, came before the Committee to present the HPTA’s annual report.  They detailed the Association’s $135,000 FY11 budget in support of the schools, including placing a new Smartboard in each school, and providing a cart of 30 Apple laptops to the High School.  Superintendent John Phelan applauded the “infectious enthusiasm” of the volunteers, adding, “I think that is why the HPTA had such an incredible year this year.”

The School’s Green Committee presented their accomplishments and goals.  Besides working towards the administration’s strategic goal of increasing recycling by 20% by 2014, the Green Committee is seeking to focus more efforts on reducing waste production.  The driving thought here is to obviate the need for waste management by producing less of it to begin with.  Their goal, said member Blair St. Clair, is to “educate the youth of the town to become a generation of recyclers.”

An NSTAR energy efficiency project will be coming to Hopkins School soon.  The school system will be able to take advantage of the 0%, two-year financing offered by NSTAR on the installation of energy saving equipment such as lighting fixtures and occupancy sensors.

Authorities Arrest Suspect In Winchester Quadruple Homicide

Man allegedly killed family, including his children, ages 2, 4

WOBURN- A Winchester man wanted in connection with a quadruple homicide in Winchester has been arrested, Middlesex District Attorney Gerry Leone and Winchester Police Chief Kenneth Albertelli informed the public today.

Thomas Mortimer, IV., 43, was sighted in Montague, MA at approximately 11:45am by a father and son.  The witnesses then copied the plate number of the vehicle Mortimer was driving and reported it to local police.  Mortimer was apprehended in Bernardston after attempting to flee and was arrested by members of the Bernardston Police Department at approximately 1:13 p.m. this afternoon.

Mortimer will be arraigned in Woburn District Court at 9 am tomorrow morning.

Authorities had taken several steps to inform the public and asked this morning for public assistance in locating Mortimer.  Mortimer has been charged with four counts of murder for the murders of his wife, two young children, and his mother-in-law.

“Thomas Mortimer has been apprehended and will face four charges of murder for the brutal and unspeakable killings of his own family,” District Attorney Leone said.  “I want to commend the network of police in Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Vermont for their collaborative work with the Massachusetts State Police and the United States Marshall Service in building this case and apprehending the defendant.”

The bodies were discovered yesterday at approximately 11:30 am inside a residence at 2 Windsong Lane by a relative who was accompanied by members of the Winchester Police Department and Winchester Fire Department.

A crime scene warrant was subsequently obtained and authorities were able to determine that four victims were deceased, two adult females and two children. The victims have been identified as Thomas Mortimer, age 4; Charlotte Mortimer, age 2; the children’s mother, Laura Stone Mortimer, age 41; and Laura’s mother, Ragna Ellen Stone, age 64.

Authorities are alleging that the defendant murdered four members of his family after an argument with his wife and ongoing marital discord.

The investigation into the circumstances of the crimes continues.

The cause of deaths is pending autopsies that are being conducted by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner (ME).

These charges are allegations, and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty.

This case is being investigated by Massachusetts State Police assigned to the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office and Winchester Police Department with assistance from the United States Marshall Service, Montague Police Department, Connecticut State Police and Avon, CT Police Department, New Hampshire State Police and Bartlett, NH Police Department; Vermont State Police and Andover Police Department.

Poll Results

June 16, 2010 — A five-hour poll today, above, shows results that compare well with polls that were conducted in 2007, when the first trial balloons for gambling in the region were floated.

Although the poll is not scientific, the results are remarkably similar for each.

Overwhelmingly — almost 2 to 1 — people do not want a casino in Hopkinton or Milford. All this happens as Milford Selectmen are going through the motions of negotiating an exclusive deal with developer David H. Nunes.

See him speak in the Boston.com video below.

A Trip to Golden Pond

In May, students in Miss Donahue’s second grade class took a special trip to the Golden Pond Assisted Living Residence in Hopkinton.  Once there, students paired up with a resident for an interview.  Students asked the residents about their childhoods, careers, families and favorite things – learning about each person and his/her valuable contributions to the Hopkinton community.  Not only did they have fun, but the students made some new friends too!  Students then used this information to create biographical slideshows in Microsoft PowerPoint.  They presented their slideshows to residents on June 11 and presented each one with a bound copy of their work.   Contributed content.

Snappy

June 16, 2010 — Theresa Boyce and Lisa Hachey discuss an order during a lull in sales at Snappy Dogs in Colella's parking lot Tuesday afternoon. The women started their seasonal business last year out of a trailer in the corner of the lot and draw quite a few lunch customers, as well as high schoolers who respond to specials.
