Clowning Around With Fashion

Nancy L. Drawe

(Punky)

June 2, 2010 — And the Oscars go to…!  Is it true?  Have the Academy Awards come to Hopkinton?  Not yet, but the Oscars for the Rummage Sale Fashion Show have!   The theme for this 2nd annual show was “Trash and Treasures,” based on the type of clothing and accessories the models had bought at the rummage sale.   This show tied into the rummage sale that had recently been held at the center.  Anyone could participate, as long as they modeled something they bought at the sale.  The criterion for this show was just having a lot of laughs, fun AND free strawberry shortcake for everybody.

For his second year, the Master of Ceremony for this great event was Dave Dobson, who sported an Ace of Spades costume and black tights.   Contestants wore outfits that ranged from elegant to quite humorous!

Judi Allessio modeled her blue capris from “Talbots,” white sandals and pretty red sweater—perfect outfit for the summer.

Mary McLeod’s outfit was a black and white silk shirt that was quite elegant. An added touch was the lovely red rose she was carrying.

Sheila Currie wore a casual vest, blouse and pair of capris that were all purchased at bargain prices from the rummage sale.

The Happy Clown flip flopped up to the stage with her huge red clown shoes!  It was hard to tell that it was Joyce Plucker who was under those large glasses, red nose, wig and clown outfit!

Barbara Pimental had a gorgeous jacket that she bought for an unbelievable price!

Texting While Driving?

This was the setup to the HopNews daylight poll to the right: Last October, President Obama put the kibosh on texting while driving for 4.5 million federal workers. And now, municipalities are getting into the act.

Anyone who has ever tried it knows that it is extremely dangerous to text and drive. People are all over the road, from one side to the other, trying to do the impossible.

The graphic shows the final outcome of the poll, which is nearly unanimous that people want texting while driving banned.

PenPals Meet at Senior Center

Mr. B's first grade class performing for the seniors at the 18th annual Pen Pal Party.

Nancy L. Drawe

(Punky)

May 27, 2010 — Last week, some of the Star Wars characters invaded the Hopkinton Senior Center!  That’s right—Darthvader, Anikan Skywalker and Luke descended upon the center, bringing with them some of their friends: Buck Tooth Bob, Mummy Wrap, Murph dog, Mario, Sparkly Fairy, Puppy and Kitten, Jessica, and Pumpkin Girl, just to name a few.   The only difference is that these characters were all little four foot first graders from the Center School!   They were there for one reason—to meet their Senior Pen Pals whom they have been corresponding with back and forth all year.   This was the annual Pen Pal Pizza Party, number 18 to be exact, by Center School’s first grade teacher, Mark Boisvert, otherwise known as Mr. B.   Eighteen years ago, Mr. B’s fourth grade class at Elmood School was corresponding with a group of fourth graders in Alaska, but he felt that they were not really making a connection because of the distance.   At that time, the Senior Center contacted the school asking if they could set up a pen pal program with the seniors and students.  Mr. B got involved and has been doing it ever since, starting with the fourth grade, then fifth, and now the first graders.   Mr. B said, “The children really love the fact that they are writing to seniors.  Many of the students here don’t live near their own grandparents and therefore don’t have much of a connection.”

At the beginning of the year, the twenty or so children choose their “fake” pen pal names and then parent volunteers come in to help them write their first letter.  The letters are then sent to the Senior Center and are distributed to the Senior Pen Pals by coordinators Joyce Plucker and Donna Deneen.  Pat Wade had been the previous coordinator, since 1997, but retired last year.  She did a great job coordinating the event, matching pen pals, designating times for letters to be written and delivered, etc.   This year, Joyce and Donna took over the job and were just as awesome!

Dear friends and neighbors,

I find it hard asking someone to make a donation. I guess we all do. But, today I am writing to you about a cause that is important to me and a cause I know you will want to support. I have decided to take steps in the fight against multiple sclerosis (MS) by joining the 2010 Bike MS Ride, for the second year in a row, and I am asking you to join me in this important fight by sponsoring me.

MS is an unpredictable and devastating disease that can attack any of us in the prime of life. Imagine, one day you are ready to take on the world, and the next you are faced with the diagnosis of an incurable and potentially debilitating disease. That is why I am participating in the 2010 Bike MS Ride and asking you to help me in my quest.

Learn more and/or donate. Michael Albertian

Congratulations Hopkinton

Editor:

Congratulations Hopkinton! Governor Deval Patrick recently recognized Hopkinton as receiving one of the state’s coveted title as a “Green Community” enabling the town to receive future energy efficiency grants from an annual fund from the state.

Receiving this title was no easy feat! Thank you to the Sustainable Green Committee for organizing the steps and producing the documents required for the application for the designation! A big thank you to the department heads and volunteers who did their jobs well to highlight and push this opportunity to the forefront of so many issues facing the town. Also, without the support of the community who came out to vote for the two items on the town warrant required for this designation, Hopkinton would not have made the short list of 35 towns in Massachusetts.

With $8.1 million from the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative, communities across the state will be required to show energy efficiency projects in detailed reports to be submitted shortly, to be considered for a portion of those funds. Fortunately, Hopkinton has much of that research completed by third party vendors because of the town’s focus on energy efficiency as noticed by Gov. Patrick as he toured the solar panel topped municipal buildings here.

Congratulations Hopkinton! Not only is there pride in being a community member of a forward thinking town, we have received the accolades from our State Rep. Carolyn Dykema and Governor Patrick as well! Good luck in the next steps as a “Green Community.”

Brian Herr Qualifies for Ballot with 3180 Signatures

HOPKINTON - May 26, 2010 — Brian J. Herr, candidate for Congress in the Massachusetts Third Congressional District, submitted 3,180 certified signatures to the Secretary of the Commonwealth, qualifying him for the ballot.

"Washington has stopped working for the American people.  Between bailouts, cap and trade and a takeover of Health Care, it is clear that Rep. McGovern is more concerned with promoting his radical agenda than doing what is right for America and the citizens of the 3rd Congressional District," said Herr.  "We need people in office that understand the real world challenges that confront us daily.  The mindset that brought about fiscal restraint and smaller government to Hopkinton is the same mindset I will take to Washington."

Mr. Herr was elected to the Board of Selectmen in 2007 and has served the past two years as the Chairman.  Prior to his election to the Board of Selectmen, he was also elected to the Planning Board where he served as Vice-Chairman.  In addition to his elected offices, Mr. Herr was also appointed to the Zoning Advisory Committee, the Personnel Committee, the Elementary School Building Committee and the CAA Historic Barn Restoration Committee.  Beyond Hopkinton, he has served the member towns of the Metro West Regional Transit Authority at the board level for the last two years.

Proud About Green Community

Editor:

I'd like to publicly thank all those involved in the effort to have Hopkinton designated a Green Community.  They're are a lot of you, more than I can name, but I'd like to point in the direction of a few:

The Hopkinton Sustainable Green Committee deserves a special thanks.  They worked very hard on this and we (all who live in Hopkinton) are indebted to them.

Second, the members of the outgoing Board of Selectmen.  This includes especially Matt Zettek and the new Chair, RJ Dourney, both of whom spoke in favor of a key part of this effort at Town Meeting.  Their support and work was invaluable.

Last, but NOT least, the biggest thanks we all owe is to one of the new members of the BoS, John Mosher.  John led this effort as Chair of the HSGC.  It would not have happened so quickly, and maybe not ever, without his effort and leadership.  Thank you, John.

The Green movement motto has long been "Think globally, act locally."  Hopkinton has now begun a process to act locally and in so doing we're making the world a slightly better place.  I'm proud this morning to be a Hopkintonian!
