Two Jumpers, One Rescued, One Recovered, From Charles River

May 19, 2010 — At approximately 11:03 p.m. Tuesday, troopers from the State Police Barracks in Boston and Brighton, as well as the State Police Marine Unit, responded to a report that two men had jumped into the Charles River from the Massachusetts Avenue Bridge, on the Boston side of the river.

State Police Lieutenant Paul Maloney and Trooper John Dwyer arrived on scene and heard screams coming from the water. Trooper Dwyer threw his cruiser’s spare tire into the water to assist one of the men, whom they could hear, but not see.

After several attempts to get to the tire, which was being carried by the current, the man was able to finally retrieve it and hold on. Trooper Dwyer then threw him a rope and secured the rope to the bridge so the man could be brought to shore. The man, a 27-year-old Dorchester resident, was transported to Brigham and Women’s Hospital for evaluation. He had been in the water for approximately 20 minutes.

The other man, a 28-year-old Hyde Park resident, whom according to witnesses was the first who had jumped into the water, could not be located. His body was recovered a short time later by the Cambridge Fire Department and State Police Marine Unit at 12:20 a.m. today.  He was pronounced deceased on the scene by responding EMS personnel.

Troopers were also assisted on scene by the Boston Police Department, Boston Fire/Rescue, and the Cambridge Fire Department, as well as the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.

Relay for Life this Friday Night

May 19, 2010 — After months of planning, many meetings, and a lot of hard work, approximately 95 teams will gather behind the Hopkinton Middle School, set up campsites, and kick off the 2010 Hopkinton Relay for Life promptly at 6:00 p.m. with a survivor and caregiver lap. All townspeople and visitors are invited to come to the track behind the school to cheer on the teams, their supporters, donators, etc. as they embark on another overnight event with expectations of raising approximately $175,000! It’s an ambitious goal but donators to this annual event in Hopkinton have always met the challenge! We hope this year will be no different.

And, have you noticed purple ribbons outside some of the businesses on Main Street and on some mailboxes around town? These represent one way folks can express support for the Relay for Life. Purple is the color associated with the Relay for Life which raises funds for research, etc. for all forms of cancer. It is perhaps one of the reasons why the Relay for Life has become such a popular fundraiser nationwide for the American Cancer Society.

There will be a Luminaria ceremony at 9:00 p.m. where those who have lost their battle with cancer are remembered and those who have survived are honored. During this ceremony, white bags are filled half way with sand and a tea light is inserted. Each bag has the name and/or photo of a loved one to be honored. At the signal, all bags are lit and there is total silence during this solemn part of the evening. Luminaria bags will be available for a $10 donation at the Relay until 8:30 p.m.

Again, we invite you to come to the track this Friday for as long as you like to cheer on participants and even walk a lap or two yourself.

See Memorial Day Parade from a New Perspective

Our Veterans have crisscrossed the globe in our defense, could you donate your convertible to drive them through this year’s Memorial Day Parade?

The Hopkinton Veteran's Celebration Committee is looking for owners of convertibles to drive Veterans on a parade route from Mount Auburn Cemetery to the Town Common for the closing ceremonies of Hopkinton’s Memorial Day Celebrations, parade lasting from around 11-11:30 on May 31st.  You’ll be joined in the parade by the Hopkinton Auxiliary Police, the Hopkinton high school band, and scouts of all ages.

The American Rhododendron Society Massachusetts Chapter Annual Truss Show and Plant Sale

Saturday, June 5 and Sunday, June 6, 2010

May 18, 2010 — The Massachusetts Chapter of the American Rhododendron Society will hold its Spring Truss Show and Plant Sale at Weston Nurseries, 93 East Main Street (Rte. 135) in Hopkinton, Massachusetts.

Saturday, June 5: Registration for the Truss Show will begin at 9 a.m. and close at 10:30 a.m. Members of the public as well as members of the Society are welcome to bring examples of the rhododendrons and azaleas (which are all part of the rhododendron genus) blooming in their gardens. The Truss Show will be opened for viewing at 1 p.m., at which time the Plant Sale will also open to the public. The closing time for the Truss Show and Plant Sale on Saturday is 5:00 PM.

Sunday, June 6: The Show and Plant Sale will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Experienced ARS members will be on hand to answer questions about the rhododendrons exhibited and discuss which ones for sale will do best in individual gardens. Our Plant Doctor will be available 10-11:00 AM and 1-4:00 PM to address all your rhododendron and azalea questions/problems.

The Truss Show will be judged by members of the Society. For those interested in entering, remember that the condition of the leaves is as important as the flower petals and the truss needs to have a stem long enough to put into a bottle. The rhododendrons are divided into classes, such as straight species or hybrids, and according to type, hardiness zones, and color. Since every spring is different, one never knows which rhododendrons will be at their peak that weekend, and, of course, location has a great impact on bloom time. Expect to see plants and flowers that you never saw before and almost never have a chance to buy in nurseries.

The Plant Sale will feature small plants propagated by ARS members from their own gardens, so they will be unusual and hard to find cultivars. There will also be a number of 1 gallon size rhododendrons that are available usually only through specialty nurseries.

The Society is delighted to pair up with Weston Nurseries, since some of the strongest early blooming rhododendrons as well as latest blooming azaleas have been hybridized by Weston Nurseries. They have added great plants suitable for New England gardens. For further information about the Show or Sale call Susan Harding at 781.259.0968. File photo by Robert Falcione.

KEEFE TECH STUDENTS GET CRASH COURSE IN DISTRACTED DRIVING

FRAMINGHAM, MA – A wrecked car sits by the Fountain Street entrance to Keefe Technical School in Framingham with a sign beside it displaying the slogan “No Phone, No Drink, No Joke.” Red tape reading “danger” surrounds the Ford Mustang GT, which is completely smashed on its driver’s side, complete with a shattered windshield, bent frame, and missing back bumper.

“This car was actually involved in an accident in the MetroWest area so it’s more than just a visual for our students,” said Julie Westcott, a Keefe Tech science teacher. Westcott helped to organize the wreck donation from Exceptional Automotive in Framingham as part of an initiative for her Health and Wellness students.

With prom just days away and graduation around the corner, drunk driving is timely a topic of discussion for high school seniors. But at Keefe Tech, seniors and underclassmen alike are not just learning about the dangers of drunk driving – they’re getting educated about the perils of distracted driving of any kind.

“Our concern is student safety, and that’s why our slogan is ‘No Phone, No Drink, No Joke,’ ” noted Chad Fallon, Keefe Tech SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions) Chapter Advisor. “Our SADD members feel strongly about raising awareness about distracted driving, whether it’s drunk driving or driving while texting.”

...Everywhere a sign

May 15, 2010 — Name recognition is the name of the political game for candidates and supporters at the intersection of Grove/Main and Cedar Streets today. The irony of the photo is that the partial sign at the top that is only inferred is the most well-known of all.
