May 9, 2010 — The Hopkinton Police Association Fishing Derby, took place at the Hopkinton Sportsmen's Club in spite of the miserable weather, but was cut short, according to organizer, School Resource Officer Phil Powers, at about 11:20 am on Saturday following some thunder and lightning.

May 9, 2010 — In between downpours yesterday, this couple from Southborough took time to enjoy the dam at the Hopkinton Reservoir.

Jessie S. (Santagate) Pitts, 71

Jessie S. (Santagate) Pitts, 71, of Holliston, formerly a lifelong resident of Hopkinton, passed away, Thursday, May 6th at the Metrowest Medical Center in Framingham, after a brief illness. Born in Everett, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Ethel (Briggs) Santagate and wife of the late George Pitts, who died in 1991.

Mrs. Pitts worked for Phipps Insurance Agency in Hopkinton and the Town of Hopkinton for many years. She is survived by her children: Steven Pitts of Millbury, Kevin Pitts and his wife Cheri of Milford, Judith Pitts of Holliston, and Ann Marie Tomasetti and her husband James of Northbridge; two grandchildren; Anthony and Jenna Tomasetti of Northbridge; two sisters; Beverly Cerutti and her husband Peter of Ambler, PA; and Mary Lou Ellsworth and her husband Russell of Hopkinton; three brothers; Joseph Santagate of Wareham, James Santagate and his wife Diane of Colorado Springs, CO; and John Santagate and his wife Gwen of Douglas; and many nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held Tuesday at 10:00am in the Chapel of the Matarese Funeral Home, 325 Main St. in Ashland with burial to follow in Evergreen Cemetery in Hopkinton. Calling hours will be held Monday from 4:00-7:00 PM and Tuesday from 9:00-10:00 am prior to the service. State Police Capture Plymouth Bank Robber

May 7, 2010 — Today at approximately 1:51 p.m., dispatchers at the State Police Middleboro Communications center took a call from a person who stated he was behind a Jeep Cherokee that was just involved in a bank robbery in Plymouth. This information was relayed to area patrols.

Within several minutes Troopers Adam LeBlanc and Joe Baker observed the suspect vehicle on Route 44 in Middleboro. The suspect attempted to elude the troopers when he drove into a corn field on Route 105 in Middleboro where he abandoned his vehicle and fled on foot.

A perimeter was established and K-9 officers arrived on scene. Trooper Mike Peters was manning his position along the perimeter when he observed the suspect making his way through the corn field. The suspect made it to the tree line and tried to conceal his position. Trooper Peters was able to approach the suspect undetected and placed him under arrest. The suspect was identified as 32-year-old Michael D. Guidetti from Plympton. He was transported to a local hospital where Plymouth Police took him into custody. A large amount of cash was recovered at the scene.

DA Leone Honors Students At Regional Law Day Event

25 Students, including one from Hopkinton HS, Take Part In Law Day Event

WOBURN- 25 high school seniors from around Middlesex County took part in a regional Law Day Event aimed at providing students an opportunity to gather and appreciate the rising challenges and enduring traditions of law in the 21st century, Middlesex District Attorney Gerry Leone informed the public today.

The students selected to participate in Law Day were chosen by their school principal based on their outstanding leadership and academic and athletic accomplishments. Each student was honored with an award from the Middlesex District Attorney Gerry Leone, President of Middlesex Bar Association Lloyd Godson and Middlesex Sheriff James DiPaola. The parents of each student and their teachers were also invited to attend. The event was held at the Middlesex Superior Courthouse in Woburn on Monday, May 3. Above is a picture of Katherine Richardson from Hopkinton High School receiving her award.

This year’s event was titled Enduring Traditions, Emerging Challenges and was held at the Middlesex Superior Courthouse in Woburn. Middlesex District Attorney Gerry Leone was the events keynote speaker and remarked on how changes and evolutions in technology have opened up an entirely new way for people to engage in unacceptable behavior and commit crimes. He expressed his confidence in the enduring traditions of the criminal justice system overcoming the new challenges. To better protect the people of Middlesex County, when the District Attorney Leone took office in 2007 he established the Cyber Protection Bureau and the Family Protection Bureau.

The Family Protection Bureau includes the Child Abuse Unit, Domestic Violence Unit and the Elder/Disabled Abuse Unit. The Bureau serves the needs of the children and families in Middlesex County by coordinating overlapping abuse areas among the Units within the Bureau, and working outside the office with the myriad service agencies who help serve and protect vulnerable victim populations. The Child Abuse Unit in particular, works in connection with the Middlesex Children’s Advocacy Center and is dedicated to preventing crime through education and training, as well as enforcement of the laws through investigation and prosecution of crimes of abuse against children.

The Cyber Protection Bureau is a team of prosecutors and investigators specifically focused on the protection of children and other citizens from the predatory dangers of the Internet. That team focuses on the investigation and prosecution of cases involving the use of computers to commit crimes and store evidence, including those who target children, the elderly and other vulnerable victims. It also addresses financial and other related cyber crimes. In addition to its prosecutorial components, the program engages community and law enforcement partners to conduct county-wide trainings, build and develop public-private partnerships, launch pilot initiatives, and support the office’s pre-existing school and community-based prevention and intervention programs. "Protecting Our Children in The Cyber Age” is one of a series of trainings spearheaded by the Cyber Protection Program.

Piece of Cake

May 6, 2010 — This Hopkinton Firefighter is dressed casually for this half-acre brush fire on the edge of Hopkinton State Park, about a thousand feet into Ashland on Howe Street. Firefighters cleared the scene less than an hour after getting the call. At one point, the roadway was blocked by smoke.

An Ashland police officer apparently asked two young men at the scene to hang around and answer questions.

Charles J. Drew, 80

Charles J. Drew, 80, a long time resident of Framingham, passed away peacefully in his sleep, Tuesday, April 27, 2010, at Kathleen Daniel Nursing Center, Framingham, four days after celebrating his 80th birthday with friends, and after a period of declining health. Born in Lynn, Mr. Drew grew up in Hopkinton and worked for many years at Nyanza Color and Chemical in Ashland. Later, he served as a bartender at Connerys in Framingham and was a cab driver for Tommys Taxi. Truly a gentle giant, Big Charlie, as he was affectionately known, will be remembered for his ready smile and friendly greeting, and his passionate loyalty to his beloved Boston Red Sox. His only sibling, a sister, predeceased him. Funeral services are private. There are no calling hours. Where No One Has Gone Before

May 6, 2010 — These students, members of the SCA (Student Conservation Association), an affiliate of AmeriCorps, are blazing a new Trail in Hopkinton State Park to connect the beach to the Split Rock Pavilion area, where general park patrons and planned parties alike can experience a moderate walk on a well constructed surface. The group is one of four across the region that is taking part in these volunteer activities.

The new trail will replace a steep, rocky one that has been used by mountain bikers and others, but could be considered treacherous for older hikers under wet conditions. The old trail will be restored to its natural state.

CMASS Champs

May 5, 2010 — Last Saturday May 1, 2010 in New London, CT, the Central Mass Mustang Volleyball Team took the Gold for the Tournament to finish their season up. Hopkinton, MA was represented by Jillian Katz #8, Alexandria Petrosinelli #7 and Alexis Torosian #32.

Bri's 100th Varsity Goal

The Hopkinton Girls Varsity Lacrosse team celebrate Senior Bri McSweeney's 100th varsity career goal during a match up against Westwood last week. Junior Brooke Rudden achieved the same prestigious accomplishment during yesterday's game against Ashland. "Bri and Brooke are hard workers and team players. Town Meeting Takes Just Two Days

May 4, 2010 — A relatively thinly attended second day of Town Meeting adjourned tonight until the May 17, 2010 Town Election.

Article #38, Stretch Energy Code was kicked around for about an hour, but nonetheless, passed 120-43 following pleas from both sides of the issue. According to proponent John Mosher, Chairman of the Sustainable Green Committee and candidate for Selectman (File photo, left), passage of the measure puts Hopkinton in a position to qualify for grants.

Selectman candidate Joe Nealon said, "Anyone can be energy-efficient." He said it would be a detriment in attracting new business.

Brendan Tedstone, referring to a part of the Article that required Town-owned vehicles to be energy-efficient, said, "I don't want the Fire Department coming to my house in a Prius." After hearing that emergency vehicles are exempt, he added that he didn't want the Fire Department to come to his house at all.

Selectman RJ Dourney spoke in favor of the measure, saying that businesses who employ green practices are the ones Hopkinton should be attracting.

Article #45 evoked some passion from both sides of the issue of rezoning parcels of land adjacent to the Golden Pond Residence Care Facility. Residents on the northern end of the facility brought a citizens' petition to Town Meeting to rezone their land from Residence B to Business zoning to add value to their properties in a neighborhood that has been encroached upon by business, and is no longer suitable for residences.

Opposing the measure was Claire Wright, who said that the issue was not about 5 homes, as was suggested, but about the 53 other homes in the vicinity that will be impacted by further development along that stretch of road. The Article, which needed a 2/3 majority to pass, did so 128 - 40.

During this discussion, Ken Weismantel (File photo, left) let it out that Hopkinton Square, at the corner of South and West Main Streets, will have a tenant soon, "I suspect."

Article # 49, giving the Board of Selectmen the authority to negotiate a lease for up to 20 years for 98 Hayden Rowe, passed unanimously. The Cultural Arts Alliance (CAA), Enter Stage Left Theater (ESL) and HCAM-TV are expected to share the land, with HCAM and ESL erecting new structures.

Article #50 to accept the transfer of ownership of the Hopkinton Library to the Town passed unanimously. On Monday, the Town Manager set forth an administrative order making the Library a Town of Hopkinton department. On this evening, Town Meeting voted to accept the property as a gift.

A point of curiosity was a stipulation that the property at 9 Church Street, owned by a for-profit corporation headed by three of the Library Trustees, would not be given to the town unless the library's feasibility study determined that was the place to build.

After some discussion, Town Counsel Ray Miyares said there was no way to bind that corporation, but that the Town Meeting vote just, "Authorizes us to accept the gift at the time."

Article #51 authorized the Board of Selectmen to apply for grants for construction of a new library or renovation of the current one. Here is a report from February by Andrew Sweeney from information provided at that time by Library Director Rownak Hussain. Since then, it has been learned that the group is considering a four-acre town-owned parcel off of Claflin Place.

Article #53 was passed to change the Town Clerk's position from an elected one to an appointed one.

Article #54 was passed unanimously to abolish the Board fo Public Works.
