March 30, 2009 — Kathryn Curry will be running the 113th Boston Marathon to support the Daniel E. Colella Scholarship Fund, which was established in 1998 as a nonprofit fund to benefit Hopkinton residents graduating from high school. One hundred percent of all money collected goes directly to the scholarship fund.

The scholarship will be awarded to a graduating Hopkinton High School senior who is planning to further their education by attending college for at least one year. They must express an interest in furthering his or her education, demonstrate involvement in extracurricular activities or community service, and show financial need.

The scholarship is being sponsored by the Daniel E. Colella family and the generous citizens of the Hopkinton community. It is their desire to keep his memory alive through this fund by helping to further the education of a deserving student with the hope that one day this student may also serve his or her community with the same pride. Tom Weaver lost his life days before his eighteenth birthday, and above is a celebration of his life at Hopkinton High School's Dave Hughes Stadium, where friends, fellow class officers and others memorialized him for those who did not know him.

March 28, 2010 — The spillway from Lake Whitehall brings water under the Gatehouse on Highland Street, into Firehouse Pond, and over its falls toward the next notable location, Whitehall Brook. The photo has all of the elements of a textbook photography lesson, but it appears that soon, however, the evergreens may grow too wide to see the structure through them from Wood Street as above.

BOSTON, March 28, 2010 — The Boston Athletic Association (B.A..A..) today announced that Nissan North America will be the official and exclusive vehicle partner for the 2010 Boston Marathon to be held on Monday, April 19, 2010. The agreement, which also includes the 2011 event, features a strong presence by Nissan at the Marathon and the three day John Hancock Sports and Fitness Expo held at the Hynes Convention Center.

Nissan Master Ryan Hall, Olympic marathoner and American record holder in the half-marathon (59:43), will attempt to capture his first marathon title when he competes in the 114^th running of the Boston Marathon.

Hall, 27, won the 2008 U.S. Marathon Trials in New York, finished 10^th in the 2008 Olympic Marathon in Beijing and third in the 2009 Boston Marathon.

Hall, one of the four premier Nissan Master the Shift athletes, will share his running secrets and training tips through a series of videos at www.mastertheshift.com. Easter Bunny

11:00 AM on the Town Common

The Easter Bunny makes his annual visit to Hopkinton on Saturday, April 3, 2010 for the Park and Recreation's Annual Easter Egg Hunt. The event, which is sponsored by Hopkinton Drug Store, will be held at 11:00 AM on the Town Common. The Easter Egg Hunt is for Hopkinton pre-school to 2^nd grade children.

Please bring your own basket or bag to collect the candy and "Special Prize Eggs". We ask parents not to pick up eggs prior to the start of the event.

There is no registration or fee for this event and we will try to give candy to all children that attend.

Please note that the Easter Bunny will appear on the common, weather permitting, and that parents are welcome to take pictures with the bunny.

Hopkinton native takes out nomination papers

March 27, 2010 — On Friday, Hopkinton native attorney Joe Nealon took out nomination papers for one of two seats open for the Board of Selectmen as an unenrolled voter. Mr. Nealon speaks about his perspective of Hopkinton in the video above.

Neither Selectmen Brian Herr nor Matt Zettek are running for re-election.

First Day with License

March 27, 2010 — A 16 year-old had an unsuccessful first day with his license today, but was uninjured, according to safety officials at the scene. No skid marks were visible as the vehicle went off of the road, onto the elevated shoulder and split a pole that was a few feet from the edge. One firefighter said the apparent cause of the low-speed crash cause was a distraction.

Frederick S. White, 84

Frederick S. White, 84, of Hopkinton died Friday, March 26, 2010. Born in Dennisport, MA. He was the son of the late Edward and Beatrice (Warr) White. He was the husband of Lois Alfreda (Nickerson) White of Hopkinton.

Fred was a WWII Navy Veteran who served in Africa. He was a member of the Masons, VFW, American Legion, and Shriners. He was a life member of the Massachusetts School Committee Association and on the building committee for the Hopkinton Senior Center and Keefe Vocational Technical High School, where he was a teacher and guidance counselor. He served as the
clerk of works at Elmwood School in Hopkinton and as building inspector for the Town of Hopkinton. He enjoyed reading, politics, golf, music, playing drums, and being a greeter at the Hopkinton Elections.

Besides his wife, he is survived by 4 children, Sheila Tiberio and her husband Ronald of Natick, Cheryl Malloy and her husband Dan of DeBary, FL., Richard White of Honolulu, HI., and Diane Sandler and her husband Mark of Framingham. He also leaves behind his brother, John White of West Yarmouth, and sister-in-law Betsey Reddish of Andover; 4 grandchildren, Stephanie Thorpe and her husband Andrew, Ronald Tiberio Jr. and his wife Karen, Rebecca Sandler and David Sandler as well as 3 great-grandchildren, Kyleigh and Trevor Tiberio and Christopher Thorpe. He is predeceased by his brothers, James, Edward, and Thomas White.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, March 31, 2010 from 4-7pm at the Chesmore Funeral home of Hopkinton, 57 Hayden Rowe St. A funeral service will take place on Thursday at 12:00 at the First Congregational Church of Hopkinton. Donations in Fred's memory may be made to Friends of the Hopkinton Senior Center, 28 Mayhew St. Hopkinton, MA. 01748.

M. Gail Wetherby, 73

NORTHBRIDGE - M. Gail Wetherby, 73, formerly of Hopkinton, died March 1, 2010 in Milford. Born in Framingham, she was the daughter of the late Earl and Elizabeth (Columbia) Hewins.

She is survived by her sons Randy of Taunton and Ronald and his wife Sara of NH, two brothers, six grandchildren and one great-grandchild. A burial of cremains service will take place on Friday, April 2 at 11:00 a.m. in Edwards Cemetery, Framingham. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Callanan-Cronin Funeral Home, 34 Church Street, Hopkinton.

Hopkinton Assists at Milford Fire

March 27, 2010 — An occupant and a cat are rescued in Milford at a dwelling fire where several towns were called to assist, as seen in this video from the Milford Daily News.

Milford Man Arrested in Milford on Drug and Firearms Violations

(Milford, MA.) On March 25, 2010 at approximately 4:20 pm, members of the Massachusetts State Police Detectives, Milford Police Detectives, and ATF executed a search warrant at 7 Senate Road, Apartment #12. As a result of the search of the address police found a variety of illegal drugs and a gun. A Colt 45 caliber handgun found had its serial number defaced, shotgun shells and other loose ammunition was also seized along with approximately 600 grams of marijuana, packaging bags, Ecstacy, mushrooms, heroin, packaging materials, and scales.

Abner Quinones age 26 of 7 Senate Road, Apartment 12 was arrested and charged with the following criminal violations:

Possession of a Large Capacity Firearm w/o a license
Possession of a firearm with a defaced serial number
Unlawful possession on ammunition without a permit
Possession of Class D Substance (Marijuana) with intent to distribute
Possession of Class D Substance (Marijuana)
Possession of Class A Substance (Heroin)
Possession of Class B Substance (Ecstacy)
Possession of Class C Substance (Mushrooms)
Control Substances Violations near a school zone

Quinones was held Thursday night on $50,000 cash bail and brought to Milford District Court Friday March 26, 2010 for arraignment.

Robert Kipkoech Cheruiyot Withdraws From 114th Boston Marathon

Hip injury leaves little time for training

BOSTON, MA (March 27, 2010)—John Hancock Financial today said on Friday that Robert Kipkoech Cheruiyot (File photo)has withdrawn from the114^th running of the Boston Marathon on April 19.

Cheruiyot, a four-time champion of the race, injured his right hip a few weeks ago and has been unable to conduct his usual training for the race.

Boston Marathon Champions Returning to Boston

Boston, MA. – The Boston Athletic Association (B.A.A.) announced today that eight former champions of the Boston Marathon will be returning to Boston and participating in the events surrounding the 114^th Boston Marathon on April 19, 2010.

Jacqueline Gareau (1980), Lisa Rainsberger [Larsen-Weidenbach] (1985), and Gelindo Bordin (1990) will celebrate the anniversaries of their legendary Boston Marathon victories by running the historic 26.2 mile course again on Marathon Monday. Four-time Boston Marathon champion Bill Rodgers (HopNews file photo), 1968 winner Amby Burfoot, 1970 victor Ron Hill, and 1983 champion Greg Meyer will take part in the B.A.A. 5K on Sunday, April 18. The anniversaries of Geoff Smith (1984, 1985) as well as Hill, Gareau, Rainsberger, and Bordin will be recognized at Saturday morning’s Champions’ Breakfast at the Fairmont Copley Plaza Boston.

“Boston Marathon champions are held in high regard throughout the running world, and in especially high regard in Boston. To have five of them at the Champions’ Breakfast will be a true delight,” said Guy Morse, executive director of the B.A.A. “It’s a bonus that Jacqueline, Lisa, and Gelindo will celebrate by returning to the site of their victories, and that Amby, Ron, Bill, and Greg will be taking part in the 5K.”

Gareau, Rainsberger, and Bordin will be recognized on Marathon Monday by wearing bib numbers with their names on them. In the sea of more than 25,000 runners, this will make them more recognizable to spectators. On Sunday of Marathon weekend, the 5,000 participants of the B.A.A. 5K will have the chance to run alongside Amby Burfoot, Ron Hill, Greg Meyer, (the last American man to win the Boston Marathon) and Bill Rodgers - some of the most famous names in distance running history.

March 26, 2010 — There was standing room only at the David Hughes Stadium Thursday evening as students, family, friends and the community at large gathered to pay respects to Tom Weaver, who died last Sunday from brain cancer. He was memorialized by the words of his friends and fellow students in verse and song. The gathering left the stands and stood shoulder to shoulder around the track at the varsity sports field holding candles as senior members of the football team released balloons.

HopNews will soon have a video slideshow set to the music that was sung on this evening, as well as a three-part video of the ENTIRE event that will be available later on Friday.

March 25, 2010 — Republican attorney Todd Holbrook took out papers for Hopkinton Selectman this morning accompanied by Chairman of the Hopkinton Town Committee, Ken Weismantel.

According to a paper handed to members of the press, Mr. Holbrook served on the Planning Board in Falmouth for five years and and was President of the Cumberland County (Maine) Bar Association. he is currently involved as a volunteer with the Baypath Humane Society.

Mr. Holbrook gives kudos to the current Board for the direction it has taken and the civil manner in which its business is conducted.

March 25, 2010 — At some point yesterday, I got one of those now-chilling, unsolicited pop-up messages informing me that there are updates available for my Windows 7-based 64-bit computer. The message asked if I would like to install them.

Having been lulled into a sense of trust from not having any major upgrade issues since the first version of IE 8 failed to work with QuickBooks two years ago, I answered in the affirmative.

Like the young people say, "My B."

As people like myself, who have been sitting in front of a computer every day for what seems like decades, now know, software is beta-tested by the buyer. My first purchase was just that.

The former EggHead Software in Natick was my initiation to the world of software bugs. I purchased a DOS version of Q&A by Symantec, the predecessor to all lesser programs that have since become the standard, like Word, QuickBooks and Excel. It was designed by geniuses, who were all-knowing. But there was a problem with it, and I called the company, who said they would send a "patch."

"But I just got this off of the shelf. Shouldn't you sent EggHead new discs?" I asked, not knowing that all software was, and would be, somewhat defective at the point of purchase; a little like the desk that must be assembled by the buyer, only to find out at the very end that there is one screw short.

Try installing software on a Windows system and then going online. There are upgrades immediately available — and sometimes immediately necessary — for just about any program out there.

Yesterday's update experience unfolded fully this morning.

Austin and I went to capture some visuals of Richard Clark's splendid performance at the Hopkinton Public Library last evening. Austin took a still, and I got some video. The still went up immediately, but the video needed editing, processing and uploading to YouTube. YouTube had yet to process the video by bedtime last night, but I knew it would be available this morning, and that I would put it under the photo.

Clicking on the HopNews/YouTube button led to a blank screen in the place where a screenshot of the movie is usually displayed. It seems that Microsoft upgraded my browser from a 32-bit browser to a 64-bit browser without giving me the side-effects ahead of time. Flash is not supported for 64-bit browsers was the message that sent my heart racing.

Not to worry.

When the good folks at Microsoft upgraded without making sure that Adobe had a Flash player that would work with their new browser, they left the old browser in my Start/All programs menu.

So, if you are unable to watch Flash videos — the most popular way to share video content on Earth — because of a browser "upgrade," look for the IE browser in your All Programs; find the one that does not say "64-bit," and open it instead of the 64-bit version.

Hopefully, that will solve any problems that have arisen with viewing videos from the largest archive of videos on the web.

To Kill a Mockingbird — One-man Act by Richard Clark

March 24, 2010 — The Hopkinton Public Library was the setting for Atticus Finch to tell his story, as Richard Clark left his best Mark Twain, Ernest Hemingway and William Shakespeare at home Wednesday evening, and became the lead character of the novel "To Kill A Mockingbird" at the Hopkinton Public Library, to the approval of a full house.
