State Police engaged in Rescue Effort

March 24, 2010 — Tonight at approximately 6:57 p.m., troopers from the State Police Barracks in Boston responded to calls of a man jumping from westbound side of the Longfellow Bridge.

The State Police Marine unit was able to recover a victim from the water and responding EMS personnel began providing immediate first aid. The victim has been transported to Massachusetts General Hospital for further treatment.

State Police personnel were assisted at the scene by Boston EMS, the Cambridge Police Department, and the Cambridge Fire Department.

The name of the victim is being withheld.

AG COAKLEY SECURES $3 BILLION IN LOAN MODIFICATIONS FOR HOMEOWNERS NATIONWIDE IN AGREEMENT WITH MORTGAGE LENDING GIANT COUNTRYWIDE

$18 million in relief for Massachusetts homeowners; $4.1 million payment to Commonwealth

BOSTON – As part of her office’s ongoing initiative to combat predatory lending practices that contributed to our nation’s economic crisis, Attorney General Martha Coakley today reached a significant settlement with Countrywide Financial Corporation (Countrywide) that will provide an estimated $18 million in loan modifications for Massachusetts homeowners, $3 billion in loan modifications for homeowners across the country, and a $4.1 million payment to the Commonwealth. Countrywide is now owned by Bank of America.

The settlement, filed today in Suffolk Superior Court, expands an earlier agreement that Countrywide reached with 43 other state Attorneys General and the District of Columbia in 2008 for loan modification for certain delinquent borrowers and builds on standards set forth in the Home Affordable Modification Program (HAMP) administered by the United States Treasury.

“Over the last three years, our office has been committed to holding accountable those who are responsible for the foreclosure crisis that has ravaged Massachusetts and has led to one of our country’s worst economic recessions in decades,” said Attorney General Coakley. “With today’s action we have secured billions of dollars in relief to help keep thousands of families in Massachusetts and across the country in their homes. This settlement provides for principal loan reductions that will help put thousands of people back on the road to financial recovery.”

The settlement allows for significant principal forgiveness for delinquent borrowers in HAMP-eligible Pay Option ARMs, 2-year Prime ARMs, and Subprime 2-, 3-, 5-, 7- and 10 –year Hybrid ARMs, who owe more than 120% of their home's current fair market value on their first mortgages. It also allows for principal reductions for HAMP-eligible Pay Option ARMs which are delinquent or at risk of imminent default, and whose unpaid principal balances increased due to negative amortization in excess of 95% of the home's current fair market value. Hundreds of Massachusetts homeowners are eligible for the expanded relief, which is expected to provide approximately $18 Million of principal forgiveness in Massachusetts and an estimated $3 billion in relief to consumers nationwide. March 24, 2010 — On Tuesday evening, Selectmen approved a parade permit for the 114th BAA Boston Marathon to be held on April 19, 2010. Roads will close on the day of the race at 7:30 am, and parking will be banned from 5:00 am.

One of the highlights in the discussions of Town Meeting Articles, was to amend the Town Charter to change the elected position of Town Clerk to an appointed one. Town Manager Norman Khumalo, in responding to a question by Selectman Michele Gates, reminded the Board that they were meeting to sign the Town Warrant, and that discussion of approval or disapproval of each was a separate matter. They voted to approve the Warrant.

Members of the Board of Public works, Chairman Dan McIntyre, Jim Pyne and Kevin Kohrt appeared to speak in favor of disbanding their board. The Board was created by a petition to the General Court following a Town Meeting vote, but Town Counsel Ray Mirayes has determined that the Town Charter gives authority over the Department of Public Works to the Town Manager. Prior to the establishment of the BPW, a DPW Advisory Board, chaired by Chairman of the Board of Selectmen, brought recommendations to the Board of Selectmen, and was given strong support by them.

Selectman RJ Dourney suggested a return to the previous advisory board, and Mr. Khumalo said he could make that happen very quickly. The Selectmen voted to support the dissolution.

The Selectmen also voted to support an Article for redesign of the Downtown traffic and pedestrian streetscape from Wood Street to Ash Street. The study will cost the town $400,000, but the state could kick in $3.5 - 4 million for the actual work. However, it would not include the burying of the telephone and electric.

The Selectmen also voted to support the article to replace the water main on Main Street, which is over 100 years-old.

A BELATED Happy St. Patrick’s Day to you!

St. Patrick’s Day arrived at the Senior Center with a Lot ‘o Green and a Lot ‘o Corned Beef and Cabbage! Just about everyone was wearing green to celebrate the day and people were in a real festive mood--greeting each other with “Top o’ the mornin’ to you!”

The corned beef and ham dinners came from TJ’s, and the Senior Center cooks and volunteers finished preparing and serving it--over 50 lbs each of potatoes, carrots and onions. Not to mention dozens of cabbages! This Irish feast fed about 130 people and believe me, nobody went home hungry. Thanks to everyone who volunteered for this great special event!

While people were enjoying their desserts including frosted shamrock cookies, each one handmade and decorated by June Mackin, they were entertained by a wonderful St. Patrick’s Day show. John Guido was back again, playing all kinds of Irish songs on his keyboard, as well as many requests such as “Old Time Rock and Roll.” Then as a special added treat, the Senior Center Chorus sang a few popular sing-a-long Irish tunes!

As I looked around, I noticed how many people were smiling and truly enjoying this special day-- the moment was right then, right there--in the great room at the Hopkinton Senior Center. As people were leaving, I overheard so many “What a great time I had!” comments. That’s what the day was all about!

One of the most important events sponsored by the Senior Center and Council of Aging will be the Health Fair this Saturday, March 27 from 9 am to 1 pm. Not only is it a mini health fair because of the FREE screenings that will be available: Vision, Blood Pressure and Blood Glucose, Cholesterol, Hearing and Bone Density, but it’s also a program providing a wealth of information about options for seniors and their families regarding health care and ways to stay safe in their own homes. Holding this program on a Saturday is a big plus because those people who work during the week and ordinarily wouldn’t be able to attend, will now have that opportunity. I hope you take full advantage of the day, because there is a lot of valuable information that will be presented at this program.

The Senior Center Art Show will be held during the Health Fair. All the students in the Painting, Pottery and Quilting classes will be displaying their work this day. You won’t believe the beautiful projects they’ve all been working on. Come on up and see for yourself! Enjoy the day!

ESL’s Open Mic to Feature Tom Smith on April 3

HOPKINTON, MA (March 23, 2010) – Veteran folk singer/songwriter Tom Smith will be the featured artist at ESL’s Open Mic Night on Saturday, April 3 with host Barbara Kessler. Smith, accompanied by guitar, banjo, and other instruments, will interweave old folk songs and original songs that are reminiscent of the very best of the old-school folk tradition, presented in an easy-going and engaging style.

Angel's Garden Center Approved for Expansion

Legacy Farms Permit moves closer to approval

March 23, 2010 — Angel's Garden Center received approval from the Planning Board on Monday evening of their plans to construct a 400 square foot building in the center of their existing land to sell flowers, plants, produce, as well as soft drinks, coffee and snacks.

They will close the School Street entrance, and design a new entrance at Angel's Way in order to direct traffic in a more orderly fashion.

The Legacy Farms Master Plan Special Permit Public Hearing continued Monday evening, to discuss Design Guidelines and other outstanding issues. Legacy is planning to build 940 residential dwelling units and 450,000 square feet of commercial/retail/industrial space.

Abutter Chris Barry, who has opposed the project, questioned the safety of an exit near the current Peach Street, saying there was not enough line-of-sight required in the Design Guidelines. Legacy principal Roy MacDowell, Jr. told the Board that they planned to cut down the hill at Frankland Road in order to improve line-of-sight, and he assured Mr. Barry that the traffic engineer, Robert Nagi, would be certain to comply with all safety regulations.

Mr. Barry also expressed concern about the "meandering trail" from Ray Street to the Legacy property.

Mr. MacDowell replied that it was a paved sidewalk, not a trail. Both agreed it is a challenge.

Chairman Mark Abate implored the Board to take action on the Master Plan Special Permit before the Town Elections in May. He also asked whether the Board should order the staff to suspend any efforts on disapproval language.

Member Ken Weismantel remarked that some members of the Board would no longer be on the Board after the elections. Mark Abate has been mentioned as a candidate for Selectman, and Sandy Altamura has made it clear she has no interest in running again. That would leave six eligible members, all of which must vote in the affirmative in order for the Permit to pass, if the permit is not passed before the election. And if another member leaves the Board, bringing the total of eligible voting members below the six needed to pass, the Public Hearing for the permit — which has been going on since December, 2008 — would need to start over.

The Board plans to meet again next Monday, March 29, 2010.

A fellow classmate, Tom was one of the most genuinely loving and lovable people I have had the privilege of knowing. The love and support that have been available in abundance to Tom’s family, our class and our school truly embodies his spirit, and his memory will persevere as an inspiration to all. The way our school community came together today was heartbreaking, yet empowering. The school administration, my classmates, and the Weaver family are all deserving of our thanks for providing us all with such great support, and I hope that you would all feel our reciprocation. Moving forward, these next few days and weeks will continue to be difficult, but our unity will keep us strong through graduation and beyond. Rest in peace, Tom, for you are loved.

Today was one of those school days you will always remember. The day started with a huge prayer around the flag pole and then a long moment of silence before class begun. Teachers tried to lead class like a normal day, but you could tell it was hard even for them. The principals and guidance counselors were all in the library and you could go there during class if you needed someone to talk to. In the atrium, there is a huge poster that I am pretty sure EVERYBODY in the school signed and in the display case they had his football jersey and letters that people had wrote to him. They also had a computer set up for everyone to look at his facebook pictures and sign the wall of the group dedicated to him. They also posted his college essay in the display case. The first line read, "Be positive. That is my blood type, and outlook on life." During last period there was another prayer around the flag pole. It is amazing how one person who not everyone knew, can bring absolutely everybody together. The emotions felt in the high school today were unlike any others kids at this age have ever felt. But it felt nice knowing everybody around you was feeling the same way.

Thomas Patrick Weaver, 17

Thomas Patrick Weaver, 17, of Hopkinton, died at his home on Sunday, March 21, 2010 after a courageous battle with cancer. Born in Boston, he was the son of John and Susan (Abbott) Weaver of Hopkinton.

Thomas was a 2010 graduate of Hopkinton High School. He was a freshman, JV, & Varsity football player and a former Lacrosse player. He was a two time coach of the girls powder puff championship team. He was class Treasurer during his sophomore, junior, and senior years. Thomas was Prom King and Homecoming King and was Student of the Month in November 2009. He was the top fundraiser in the Hopkinton Relay for Life and was a Camp Lawrence Counselor and a lifeguard at the Charter Oaks Country Club in Hudson. He loved skiing, and spent many of his years vacationing in Rangeley, Maine. He was accepted to the University of Colorado, Boulder, his first choice. He was friendly, beloved and humble.

Besides his parents he is survived by his siblings, Douglas Foster Weaver of Atlanta, GA., Julia Ward Weaver of Hamburg, Germany, Jennifer Abbott Weaver of Hopkinton, his paternal grandmother, Sylvia Weaver of Baltimore, MD., his uncles, Norman Abbott and his wife Donna, Hal Abbott and his wife Gail Hudson, Dana Abbott and his wife Mariellyn, Roger Weaver and his wife Becky, Dale Weaver; his aunts, Barbara Torza and Nancy Burnett. He is predeceased by his maternal grandparents, Jane Abbott Ellis and Foster Abbott, and his paternal grandfather, Maurice Weaver and two uncles, Bruce Abbott and Lowell Burnett.

Visitation will be held on Friday, March 26, 2010 at the First Congregational Church of Hopkinton, East Main St. from 2:00-7:00p.m. A funeral service will take place in the church on Saturday at 11 am. Burial services in Mount Auburn Cemetery in Hopkinton will be private with his family. Arrangements are from the Chesmore Funeral Home of Hopkinton. Donations in his name and memory maybe made to the Camp Lawrence, Merrimack Valley YMCA 101 Amesbury St. 4th Floor, Lawrence, MA 01840 or to Thomas Weaver Hopkinton Youth Sports Memorial Fund. Today was a day unlike any other. There was such a tremendous outpouring of love and support at the high school today. The school was very solemn today, the hallways quiet and the classes reserved, everybody in their own world, coping the way they needed to. But in the same, the poster in the foyer is covered in signatures, and the Facebook group for Tom has more than 1400 people in it. We as a community have come together in extraordinary strength and compassion to show our love for Tom and our support for his family, and that in itself is something to be recognized. Tom is loved, Tom always will be loved, and he will not be forgotten.

Roll-over on Loop Road

March 21, 2010 — Hopkinton Police Officers pace skid marks and observe the path of the rolled over vehicle on the Loop Road on Sunday afternoon, where where a young man's injuries were evaluated by firefighters .

State Police Continue Investigation into Possible Shooting Incidents on Route 3

March 21, 2010 — The Massachusetts State Police today are continuing an intensive investigation into a series of incidents in which motorists' windows were shot out along Route 3 in Kingston.

State Police today announced that they will continue dedicated patrols, including use of the department's Air Wing, in that area for the foreseeable future. State Police are also assigning detectives to work with field troopers in the investigation.

In recent days the State Police Barracks in Norwell received calls that vehicles traveling on Route 3, in the area of the 16.3 mile marker, were being damaged by unknown foreign objects.

Troopers responded immediately and were on-scene within minutes of the first call. Ground units were additionally supported by a State Police Helicopter as well as State Police K9 units.

The victim’s vehicles appeared to have been possibly damaged by thrown rocks or a pellet -type gun. While checking the surrounding areas and seeking information, troopers were directed to a residence in Plymouth where, after speaking with the occupants, three pellet guns were voluntarily turned over for investigation and testing.

Over the prior two days, the Norwell Barracks had reports of kids in the woods, throwing rocks at vehicles; however after searching the area troopers were unable to locate anyone. Over the entire three-day period, a total of six vehicles were damaged as a result of these incidents.

Since securing the pellet guns, there have been no additional reports of similar events. The State Police are committed to investigating these incidents thoroughly and prosecuting any individual or individuals who are responsible for damaging these vehicles.

Troopers were additionally assisted by the Kingston Police Department and the Plymouth Police Department.

Dear Parents,

This afternoon we were notified of the tragic death of Tom Weaver, a senior at Hopkinton High School, who has been valiantly battling brain cancer for the last year. We are all deeply saddened by the loss of this courageous young man and we know that many of your children will be deeply affected by it. As a school, we are ready to support your children through this difficult time and we have crisis management procedures in place to assist them with their reactions to this tragedy. The high school will be open this afternoon and evening for any students who would like to get together to remember Tommy. Tomorrow, we encourage all students to attend school even though they may be grieving. We will have counseling personnel available to meet with students throughout the day. If you have specific concerns about your child, please contact their guidance counselor.

We will send a more detailed message tomorrow with further information, but we wanted to let you know as soon as possible about this tragedy. Our thoughts are with the Weaver family and all who knew and loved Tommy.

TEMPLE BETH TORAH NOW REGISTERING FOR ITS JEWISH EDUCATION PROGRAM FOR PRESCHOOLERS

HOLLISTON, Mass. (March 19, 2010) – Temple Beth Torah of Holliston has again expanded its Torah Tots Jewish education program for preschoolers, and is now registering for Fall 2010. The Torah Tots program focuses on Jewish holidays, traditions and prayers taught through a combination of stories, arts and crafts, songs, skits and pretend play to help develop children’s Jewish awareness. The Hebrew alphabet and vocabulary is introduced, along with a variety of Judaic concepts.

The expanded program will be offered on multiple days and times to accommodate families’ needs. A weekly drop-off class designed for 3- and 4-year-olds is being offered Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday mornings. A Sunday monthly parent/child class is also being offered for toddlers 18 months to 2.9 years on one Sunday morning per month. Classes run mid-Sept through the end of May and are taught by an experienced Jewish preschool teacher. Although no Temple affiliation is required to sign up for Torah Tots, a discounted rate will be given to Temple members.

Clean Energy Solutions Coming this Spring

March 19, 2010 — The Hopkinton Sustainable Green Committee announces their Green Forum on March 31^st at the Hopkinton library at 6:30PM with presentations from a variety of clean energy companies. Nstar, Grosolar, and Nexamp are among the list of presenters at this years’ event. Topics will include energy solutions for homeowners through heat pumps and solar systems as well as discussion of rebates and energy efficiency programs that are available to the community.

MA Clean Energy will be on hand to talk about Commonwealth Solar and other rebate programs which are available to residents here. The Green Home Forum is one of many events that Hopkinton Sustainable Green Committee has produced as its service to educate and advocate sustainable lifestyle to area residents and businesses. “This year’s event should bring a big crowd since the word is out-that there are clean energy choices!” said Matthew Marshquist the organizer for the event. “Each organization will have on hand information on several clean energy solutions for the home or business as well as energy savings programs.”
