On Ice House Pond
February 16, 2010 — The phrase with a movie of the same name, "On Golden Pond," is not what longtime Hopkinton residents want to hear. Any newcomer to town referring to this property as such will be quickly corrected. "It's Ice House Pond," they will say. Photo taken today at dusk. February 15, 2010 — Just less than two months away, on April 19, 2010, the the 114th running of the Boston Marathon will start in Hopkinton. This year, however, there is an added twist. It is the 2,500th Anniversary of the Battle of Marathon, Greece; and Hopkinton Athletic Association founder Timothy Kilduff is leading the charge to bring this to the attention of as much of the world as possible, starting with Hopkinton, Mass, and Hopkinton's sister city, Marathon, Greece. In 490 BC, on the plains of Marathon, Greece, a far outnumbered Athenian force attacked and defeated a Persian invading force of superior numbers. Many people argue that if the Greeks had not won, the world would never have known democracy. Mr. Kilduff has begun his quest to bring this message to the world by starting in Hopkinton and meeting with its businesses, who got together last week to brainstorm. Ciao Time owner Denise Griben originated the idea of a Hopkinton Passport to be stamped by each business visited, with a prize for whoever finishes with a fully stamped book and wins a drawing. The businesses will meet next on February 16 at 2:30 pm at the Marathon Restaurant on 25 Hayward Street. |

Library Trustees Want to Donate Library to Town*
February 13, 2010 — Please enjoy a report by Andrew Sweeney on the Hopkinton Public Library's goals for improvement. Some of the options recited to us are an expansion on the existing property, which is owned by the Trustees of the Library, who want to give the building and land to the town. The Library could move to another town-owned building, like the Town Hall, if the Town Offices move to Center School, providing the Center School Feasibility study recommends building a new elementary school, and placing Center School students there instead. The most expensive option, which could cost $7 - $8 million, would be to build a new building on town-owned land, with a substantial amount of that money coming in grants and donations. To learn the that breakdown, as well as why the town needs to own it to qualify, see Andrew Sweeney's revised report above. * It was previously reported that the trustees wanted to sell the library to the town for a dollar. Chairman of the Library Trustees, Linda Kimball, said that the trustees did not ask for the customary dollar, but instead, want to give the library to the town. Mr. Sweeney's revised report above reflects that correction. |

Readers Give Thumbs-up to Schools After just today, 338 people responded to the poll, a graphic of which is on the left. The dialogue that accompanied it is below. It looks like a vast majority of people have confidence in the schools, and believe that they are very good to excellent.
Hopkinton Schools: Excellent or Not? February 12, 2010 — Controversy about the school system has swirled around recent budget discussions and possible scenarios resulting from them. These discussions are taking place in more than one venue. A petition was presented to the School Committee and the Selectmen that expressed concern that the Town Manger's budget directive would result in larger class sizes. However, some educators have said that the pupil to teacher ratio is less significant these days, because the technology in the classrooms plays such a large role. Some people, as evidenced on our discussion page, Town Talk, have expressed the same concerns, while others say it is just more of the same Chicken Little message spread every year by school proponents who do not care about spending. Sometimes, public debate creates a perception, or in some cases, a misconception. How do you see things? Please vote once. Disclaimer |

Souper Bowl Wants More Participants
Editor--
In 1990, a youth group in Columbia, SC acted on a prayer—“As we enjoy the Super Bowl football game, help us be mindful of those without a bowl of soup to eat.” Inspired to reach out to those in need on Super Bowl weekend, the youth invited other area churches to join them in collecting donations in soup pots. The collaborative effort raised $5,700 with 100% given to local charities. The youth-led initiative became the Souper Bowl of Caring, a nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering young people to make a positive impact in their communities. The simple idea has created a national movement, inspiring congregations, schools and communities to work together.
In 2009, over 14,000 groups of youth generated more than $10.4 million through the Souper Bowl of Caring with 100% going to food banks, soup kitchens and other charities across the country. So far in 2010, over 6,302 groups of youth have generated more than $6.3 million in donations and they are still counting! The Souper Bowl of Caring is simple—youth collect donations on or near Super Bowl weekend and donate to the nonprofit of their choice. No money comes to the Souper Bowl of Caring. Many youth also add a Service Blitz to their Souper Bowl of Caring activity and volunteer at the nonprofit receiving their funds. |

Library Trustees Seek to Give Library to Town
February 10, 2010 — As reported Tuesday evening following the meeting by the Hopkinton Board of Selectmen, Selectman RJ Dourney advised the board, that in his role as liaison the the Public Library, that the Trustees of the Library, who own the building and the land, would still like to see a full takeover by the town. Currently, the Town funds the staff, and the Trustees own the Library building and land. Mr. Herr asked if Trustees are still on the path of working with the state to get the grant and get a one dollar investment for the town to pay only 25 cents. In order for the Library to qualify for the funding it needs to expand, it must be owned by a municipality, and not a private entity. More on that in Andrew Sweeney's report, above.
* In a phone conversation on February 11, Trustee Linda Kimball said that according to the trust document, the Library Trustees could "give" the library to the town without the Town paying the customary dollar. Above is a revised report that |
