School Parents Present Petition Trustees to transfer the library to the town

February 10, 2010 — Last night, the Hopkinton Board of Selectmen held an abbreviated session due to the absence of Town Manager Norman Khumalo, who was believed to have come down with the flu. Chairman Brian Herr noted that in his absence, Mr. Khumalo's evident importance as Town Manager kept the Board from holding a meeting on the budget. In addition, the board decided defer a vote on accepting Bolton as a member of the regional ETA [Economic Target Area] that Hopkinton belongs to, pending discussions with Mr. Khumalo regarding its pros and cons. A few parents attending the meeting also signed an online petition expressing concern for the Town manger's request to all town department to consider a 2.65% decrease from last year's budget. The Superintendent presented that scenario and his own budget, at the School Committee meeting last Thursday, and the school committee came up with one that was .5% over last year's. The School Committee is the authority, under Massachusetts law, to determine the school department's budget. During liaison updates, Mr. Herr said that the MWRTA is considering a route for a reverse commute to Hopkinton from the T train station to businesses on South Street. And Selectman RJ Dourney reported that the Trustees of the Hopkinton Public Library, who own the land and building, are still considering transferring ownership to the Town of Hopkinton. The Selectmen plan to meet again on Thursday at 7:00 pm with the budget as the sole agenda item, presuming Mr. Khumalo is well. |

Motor Vehicle Stop in Brockton Yields Loaded Gun and Drugs
The
driver abandoned the vehicle in the vicinity of 55 City Hall Plaza and
fled on foot. State troopers pursued the operator on foot and captured
him at the corner of Montello and Centre Streets. Troopers recovered 18
bags believed to contain crack cocaine from the defendant, who was
identified as LEE ASHFORD, 27, of
When troopers returned to the vehicle, they found on the rear seat a Luger 9mm handgun with four rounds of ammunition in the magazine.
ASHFORD is charged with possession of a Class B substance with intent to distribute; possession of a firearm, possession of ammunition, and numerous motor vehicle charges. He is being held on $20,000 cash bail pending arraignment in Brockton District Court. |

February 9, 2010 — The American Cancer Society Relay For Life, an overnight event that takes place on both the JV and Varsity football fields, will be held Friday, May 21 – Saturday, May 22, 2010. It is an event to honor cancer patients and their caregivers who must battle cancer around the clock. Relay began in 1985 when Dr. Gordy Klatt ran and walked around a track for 24 hours to raise money for the Society.
Relay For Life represents the hope that those lost to cancer will never be forgotten, that those who face cancer will be supported and that one day – cancer will be eliminated. The Planning Committee is also increasing the integration of both cancer survivors and the mission of the American Cancer Society and the Relay For Life into the event.
What exactly is Relay for Life? Teams of no more than 15 individuals (students, adults, families) are formed and they begin fundraising for the fight against cancer. On the day of the Relay, teams set up campsites around the high school track where lots of fun is had (games, stories, lots of eating, etc.) while always remembering the real reason for participating. There’s a DJ playing music, a dunk tank (to raise even more money), and other activities, eg, theme laps where team members dress accordingly, etc. One rule: at least one team member should be walking the track at all times. The Relay kicks off with a Survivors Lap, followed by a Luminaria ceremony at dusk where bags of sand with candles are lit with names of those who lost their battle with cancer, those currently coping with cancer treatment, and survivors. It is a very moving ceremony.
Everyone in the community is encouraged to create a team or join an existing one. SERENITY HOUSE SELLS FOR $1,000,000
February 8, 2010 — South Middlesex Non-Profit Housing Corporation, a non-profit arm of the for-profit South Middlesex Opportunity Council (SMOC), has purchased the land and building they have leased for years, known as the Serenity House, from Mezitt Agricultural, an entity owned by Roy S. MacDowell Jr., principal of the Legacy Farms project, which is being developed on former nursery land and consists of a projected 940 residential units and 450,000 square feet of commercial/retail/industrial space. Because Serenity House is located in the OSMUD, a specially zoned overlay approved for the Legacy project, and because the agreement with the town states that non-profits must pay a PILOT (Payment in lieu of taxes) in that overlay, and because SMOC is renown for fighting any attempt from municipalities to collect PILOTs, the seller has agreed to pay the amount that would have been collected in taxes as an exception to the original agreement. |

Track Teams Have a Record Breaking Day
Above, file photo, Kellie Lodge and Kim Bolick by Linda Clancy February 7, 2010 — Members of the Boys and Girls Track Teams shattered records at the McIntyre Elite Relays today at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston.
The stars of the day were the Girls 4x800 relay team running 9:35.41 to capture 4th place. Haley Anderson, Kim Bolick, Kellie Lodge and Tam Mills not only broke the Hopkinton High School record but also broke the TVL all time record by 6 seconds! Coach Hall could not have been more proud of the girls. He commented, “Placing 4th in a meet that included the large 2000 student schools is quite a feat.”
The Boys 4x800 relay team also had an amazing race. Mike Ronan, Zach Hutchinson, Kevin Franke and Cam Fairbanks ran 8:19.49 for 10th place, setting a new Hopkinton High School record. The Boys 4x400 relay team of Mike Ronan, Jake Whittles, Josh Hacunda and Zach Hutchinson ran a season best time of 3:32.20 to end up in 7th place.
Three other teams competed for Hopkinton. Sam Oleson, Maggie Olney and Jackie Chrico placed 10th in the shot put relay. In the sprint medley, Lodge, Dana Cavedon, Sheena Dupry and Emily Jarvis placed 18th with a time of 4:29.78. Sam Prescott, Mirelle Raza, Kelly O’Connor and Cavedon ended up in 9th place missing the hurdles finals by 1/10th. |

Troopers pursued him on foot and recovered a bag containing approximately 500 bags of heroin that DIAZ allegedly discarded. He initially eluded capture. The passenger, PEDRAZA, was placed under arrest at the scene for using a motor vehicle without authority and conspiracy to violate narcotic laws.

Kindergarten Lottery Numbers Chosen February 5, 2010 — Last evening, Nancy Burdick and Principal Jennifer Parson read randomly chosen lottery numbers for students wanting to be accepted into a full day program for kindergarten to be held at Center School in the fall of 2010, after generating the order of the numbers from random.org. The parameters of 1-145 were put into the web program intended to kick out numbers for the 154 children, which includes multiples for twins and triplets. Ms. Parson said that 88 slots would be filled, but added that it didn't mean that the first 88 numbers had won a spot due to the multiple children in a family. In fact, the first 88 slots ended at number 43, which is bold and in red in the list below, due to 5 sets of twins or multiple children in a family in the first set of numbers. The volume of numbers was chosen so that in the case of several families decided not to accept the full-day kindergarten, or to pay the $ 4,000 yearly fee, there would be no need for an additional lottery.

School Feasibility Study Firm Authorized

February 5, 2010 — Prior to last night’s
School Committee meeting, School Committee Chair Nancy Burdick drew the
lottery numbers for the 88 available slots in next year’s pilot full-day
kindergarten program. “We have 154 children whose families have
expressed interest in the lottery,” said Center School Principal
Jennifer Parson. Using the website
random.org, Burdick generated a
randomized list of the numbers 1
through 145 (families having either twins or triplets each received a
single lottery number for their family’s incoming kindergartners). The
numbers were then read aloud. Families can call
The School Committee authorized Burdick to sign the necessary paperwork to retain Design Partnership of Cambridge for designer services for the feasibility study of the proposed new elementary school building. Superintendent John Phelan noted that town meeting had previously authorized $385,000 for the feasibility study. “These negotiations have stayed within the parameters of that appropriation,” he said.

Three Arrested in Milford on Drugs, Weapons Charges
After detectives had identified themselves as police and ordered him to stop he tried evading them by running away up Claflin Street. During the foot pursuit the suspect was observed by detectives pulling out a gun from his waist, pointing it in the direction of pursuing detectives and firing shots at them. Detectives Sousa and Ball reported hearing the sounds of some type of gunshots being fired in their direction. The fleeing suspect was also observed throwing things out of his pockets as he ran away up Claflin Street. The suspect was quickly apprehended by Detective Sousa in a hallway located at 2B Cemetery Street. The gun was later recovered in the road on Claflin Street. The gun was a BB gun that looked similar to an automatic pistol that many police use for duty weapons. The suspect made admissions to detectives he fired shots at them saying it was only a fake gun and that he was scared. After the three were arrested a search warrant was issued by the Clerk Magistrate of the Milford District Court authorizing officers to search the first floor apartment at 22 Depot Street Milford, MA. where officers conducted a search into the early hours of the morning. Police did find evidence of illegal drug dealing.

who had been missing since Monday. The woman, a Lunenburg resident, was
found alive in a wooded area in Townsend. The woman was transported to
an area hospital for evaluation. The search for the missing woman began
yesterday afternoon and continued through late last night. The search
was resumed this morning at 6 a.m. 
In
Hopkinton, we are fortunate to have many concerned students taking up
the fight but as our Relay has grown, so has our need for adult
involvement alongside the students. At our last meeting, increased
supervision and security at the event was the major topic of discussion.
The mostly student Planning Committee proposed and enacted a requirement
that all teams must have at least two adult members. There will also be
increased monitoring in the campsite area and a process for checking
chaperones in and out as their shifts change over.

great time was had by everyone at the recent beFREE! Project’s Skating
Night at the New England Sports Center. A special thank you goes out to
all the chaperones, especially those who braved the ice with all those
high energy high school students. We’d also like to thank the Skating
Club of Boston for offering us the ice at a reduced rate and the Youth
Commission who subsidized the cost. Our next high school event will be a
handball tournament in March. Be on the lookout for more details in the
next few weeks.

(Milford,
MA.) February 4, 2010 — Last
night, Milford Detectives were investigating illegal drug activity in
the Depot Street area and subsequently arrested three male subjects from
Milford and Hopedale, MA. Two subjects under surveillance were observed
making a hand to hand drug deal in the parking lot of the Countryside
Liquors on Central Street shortly before 8:00 p.m. Detectives Sousa and
Ball affected the arrests of two individuals and seized a small amount
of oxycodone, a knife, an electric stun gun and approximately $1300
cash. A third subject was later arrested during the investigation after
he had delivered a substance believed to be cocaine to one of the
undercover detectives on Claflin Street shortly after 9:30 p.m.
