High School Students Encouraged to Pursue Science Careers
Christopher Reeve's Sister-in-law speaks to science students

December 2,
2009 — As if her Hollywood connection wasn't enough, Deborah Morosini MD
,the sister of the late
Dana Reeve, who was the widow of Christopher Reeve of Superman fame,
brought charisma, charm, intellect and experience before an audience of
Hopkinton High School science students yesterday in a bid to encourage
students to pursue a career in science. Science teacher Jim Marzec
recruited Dr. Morosini for the task after his stint as an intern
with AstraZeneca, where Dr. Morosini is the principal pathologist.
Dr. Morosini spoke warmly of her sister Dana, who died of lung cancer,
one of a minority percentage of non-smoking women who contract the
disease.
She said that 55% of women who get the disease never smoked or quit long
ago, and that only 16% of the people with the disease get an early
diagnosis.
"Lung cancer claims more lives than all of the gynecological and breast
cancers combined," she said, again narrowing her ninety-minute
scientific presentation to the two high school classes in attendance, on
cancer and cancer drugs.
"Working in cancer research is fun. You're going to come out with some
drugs that actually make people live," she said. "There is a need for
skilled, younger people.
"Don't rule out science.
"It's fun!" she concluded. |

Natick
Man Pleads Guilty To Operating Drug Operation Out Of His Home
FRAMINGHAM
– A Natick Man pleaded guilty today in connection with drug distribution
and firearm charges.
Jonathon Cook, 20, of Natick,
pled guilty to possession with intent to distribute a Class D drug, drug
violation near a school/park zone, and possession of a firearm without a
FID card. Framingham District Court Judge Greco sentenced Cook to six
months in the House of Corrections.
“Today’s plea is the result of an extensive investigation
by Natick police in which this drug operation was
successfully halted,” District Attorney Leone said. “Drug crimes and
serious, violent crimes go hand and hand and we will continue to
actively pursue those who put not only themselves but their communities
in harms way through the distribution of illegal drugs.”
After an extensive undercover investigation where the
defendant was the target, on Thursday, August 13, Natick Police executed
a search warrant at 15 Glen Street in Natick.
Authorities conducted a search of the defendant’s residence, which he
shared with his parents, and recovered multiple bags of individually
packaged marijuana, $700 is U.S.
currency (which included marked bills used in controlled buys), a pair
of brass knuckles with knives attached, and a shotgun.
A
bedroom closet appeared to also be cultivated into a growing room for
marijuana.
Authorities also recovered additional knives, a large bag of marijuana,
and a scale in the basement of the residence. It was discovered that
the defendant had an active restraining order against him at the time of
the search warrant and was not allowed to be in possession of any
firearms.
Cook
was subsequently arrested and transported to the Natick police station.
Cook
was arraigned on August 18 in Natick District Court where he was ordered
held on $50,000 cash bail.
The
prosecutor was Coli McMahon. The case was investigated by Natick
Police. |

Fatal Crash on Route 3 in Chelmsford
December
1, 2009 — Today, at approximately 10:30 a.m., Troopers assigned to the
State Police Barracks in Andover responded to a three-vehicle crash on
Route 3 North, north of Route 110 (Exit 31) in Chelmsford, that
resulted in one fatality and serious injuries to two other people.
Preliminary
investigation by State Police Sergeant Walter Hanley indicates that
Juanita McKenzie, age 33, of Lowell MA, was operating a 2001 Acura
MDX on Route 3 North, partially in the far right lane and break down
lane, when her vehicle struck the rear of a 1999 Peterbilt truck that
was parked inside a work site set-up. The truck is owned by a United Oil
Recovery, Inc., a private environmental clean-up company.
Anderson
Cadell Jr, age 44, of Seabrook NH and Salvatore Pintone, age 30, of
Lynnfield, who were employees working at the site,
were pinned between their vehicle and
McKenzie’s vehicle. Anderson Cadell was pronounced deceased at
the scene while Salvatore Pintone was transported to Beth Israel
Hospital in Boston by medical
helicopter with serious injuries. After striking the truck, the Acura
made contact with a 2002 Chevrolet Cavalier operated by 61-year-old
George Peterson from Chelmsford. Both George Peterson was
transported to Lowell General Hospital with minor injuries while Juanita
McKenzie was transported to by ambulance to Lahey clinic with serious
injuries.
Trooper
Wayne Gerhardt, who was working at the detail site, immediately rendered
critical first aid to Mr. Pintone.
The facts and
circumstances of the crash remain under investigation by Troop A of the
Massachusetts State Police with the assistance of the State Police
Collision and Reconstruction Section and the State Police Crime Scene
Services Section. Also assisting at the scene were the Office of the
Chief Medical Examiner, the Chelmsford Fire and Police Departments, and
Highway Division of the Massachusetts Department of Transportation.

Highway Cowboy Helps Troopers Corral
Escaped Cows
December
1, 2009 — Today at 10:29 am, Troopers from the State Police Barracks in Springfield responded to reports of cows walking on Route
91 South, near Exit 8, in Springfield. Upon arrival, the Troopers
located two heifers, estimated to weigh approximately 500 pounds each,
walking in and out of the travel lanes. The investigation revealed that
a latch on a trailer that was hauling the animals to Enfield, Conn., had become dislodged. The cows then
escaped into slow-moving traffic.
To ensure the safety of the motoring
public as well as the safety of the animals, Troopers subsequently shut
down Route 91 South in order to remove the animals to a safe location.
The process of removing the cows from the
highway was aided by a motorist who himself was stuck in the traffic
backup created by the animals. The motorist, who was wearing a cowboy
hat and cowboy boots, apparently was particularly well-versed in
handling these types of animals. The cowboy motorist, who did not make
his name known, lassoed one heifer, and then the other, and was able to
then re-corral each animal back into the trailer from which they had
escaped.
Troopers at the scene were additionally
assisted by the Environmental Police and the Springfield Police animal
control officer.
Route 91 South was closed for
approximately a half-hour to safely remove the animals from the road.

Former
Milford Board of Sewer Commissioners Member
Scott Lanzetta Fined $5,000 for Conflict of Interest Law Violations
Lanzetta Enters into a
Disposition Agreement to Resolve
Conflict of Interest
Law Allegations
December 1, 2009 — In an Order issued today,
the State Ethics Commission has concluded the adjudicatory matter
involving former Milford Board of Sewer Commissioners member Scott
Lanzetta (“Lanzetta”) by approving a Disposition Agreement in which
Lanzetta admitted to violating G.L. c. 268A, the conflict of interest
law, and agreed to pay a $5,000 civil penalty, and by dismissing the
adjudicatory hearing.
The adjudicatory hearing was initiated by
the Commission’s Enforcement Division by the filing of an Order to Show
Cause on September 22, 2009. In the Disposition Agreement, Lanzetta
admitted that he had repeatedly violated section 17(a) of the conflict
of interest law by receiving compensation for sewer connection work he
had performed in his private capacity for properties located in Milford. Between 2005 and 2007, while serving
as a member of the Board of Sewer Commissioners, Lanzetta received
between $1,000 and $5,000 per job for 17 Milford sewer projects. Section 17(a)
prohibits a municipal employee from receiving compensation from anyone
other than the municipality in connection with any matter in which the
municipality is a party or has a direct and substantial interest. The
sewer connections required Sewer Department permits and inspections. By
receiving payment for these jobs from property owners, Lanzetta violated
section 17(a) on each occasion.
“Municipal employees must understand that
the conflict of interest law requires their undivided loyalty to the
municipality,” stated Commission Executive Director Karen L. Nober.
“That loyalty is compromised when municipal employees represent private
business interests in matters where the municipality also has
interests.” |
