Craig Nation Files Suit Against the Town

Property boundary at heart of dispute

Date passes, and a no-trespass letter will not be sent

October 6, 2009 — Chairman of the Board of Selectmen Brian Herr disclosed this evening, following an executive session of the Board of Selectmen, that Hopkinton resident and Conservation Commission member Craig Nation has filed a lawsuit against the town of Hopkinton. At issue is a very long, large, neatly stacked pile of cord wood allegedly on town-owned land, which the town purchased from Mr. Nation's father, Ron, and is adjacent to his own residence.

     "My understanding is that Mr. Nation has filed an action against the town to move the question forward," Mr. Herr said. Mr. Herr said that neither individual boards nor individual people are named in the legal document.

      At their September 22, 2009 meeting, Selectmen discussed sending a letter threatening Mr. Nation with arrest for trespass, presumably, if he did not move the woodpile in 15 days, which expired this evening with no action taken against Mr. Nation. Selectman Michele Gates said at the time it was "drastic" action. Mr. Herr promised to speak directly with Mr. Nation in the meantime, but with no apparent resolution to date.

      John Coolidge, Chairman of the OSPC (Open Space Preservation Committee) testified before Selectmen that evening and said, "He [Nation] said he knows it's town property and he said it's his right to put stuff there." Mr. Coolidge said that complaints came from two holders of the conservation restriction about a year ago. He said the trespass letter was written last April, but Town Counsel Ray Miyares needed to research the deed in the meantime.

      When asked what Mr. Nation's claims are, Mr. Herr said this evening that he did not know.    

     "While some progress has been made in moving the woodpile, and on advice of Town counsel, the no-trespass order will not be sent at this time," Mr. Herr said.

       "The town is under the impression we own land to one point. Mr. Nation claims he owns land to another point.

       "It is an 8-foot strip that needs to be sorted out," he said.

       Copies of the legal document were not available this evening. Mr. Nation's phone is unlisted.

In 2010, the crowd may be even bigger so don’t risk being the only one still in bed as Hopkinton celebrates its Third Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Giving Back on January 18. Please make sure to mark your calendars now for this important event.

Volunteers Wanted for Community Events

Sponsored by the Hopkinton Youth Commission, this community-wide day of service has quickly become a tradition in town. From the National Honor Society to the Women’s Art Forum, student and community groups contribute time, talent and materials for service projects throughout Hopkinton and beyond. Past projects have ranged from book and food drives, letters to the Troops, and lunch for Hopkinton seniors. None of this, however, can happen without advance planning. Volunteers are needed now to ensure the event’s continued success. Please note that volunteers do not need to be affiliated with a particular community group to volunteer, all are welcome! Those interested in helping out are asked to please contact Linda Katz or Anne Schneider at MLKhopkinton@comcast.net

Award-Winning Middle School Teacher Evren Gunduz to Speak

The day begins with a kick-off breakfast along with a short program in honor of Dr. King’s legacy. The highlight of the morning is an inspirational message delivered by a person who exemplifies Dr. King’s dedication to service. Continuing the tradition will be this year’s very special guest, Mr. Evren Gunduz! Mr. Gunduz (File photo) is a science teacher at the Middle School, currently on leave while pursuing a graduate degree at the Harvard School of Education. A 2009 “Excellence in Education” award winner from the Goldin Foundation, Mr. Gunduz is the founder of the IGNITE, a dynamic program staffed by 8^th graders as mentors to incoming 6^th graders at the Middle School. He is sure to get the day off to a rousing start!

History of Hopkinton Presentation

for Women's Club Members and Prospective Members Only

 Do you believe Hopkinton has always been a sleepy, rural community?  If so, you're very wrong!  In the late 1800's, Hopkinton was the leading producer of shoes in the United States.  Through old photographs and some historical digging, Hopkinton residents Chuck Joseph and Kathleen Culler have created an amazing pictorial history and presentation of the real Hopkinton.

October 5, 2009 — Coach Doug Merrill of Power Up Foundation hits the Start line hard as Selectman Brian Herr and others cross the line after running uphill to publicize Coach Merrill's Run to the Keys to promote positive mental and physical health.  In the spirit of solidarity, many members of the Hopkinton High School Cross Country team joined them at Cookies Corner, photo, below.

      According to the coach's website, "Coach Merrill is in the process of organizing a historic run that is scheduled to begin October 4th, 2009 in Boston, Massachusetts and to conclude March 2010 in Key West, Florida.  The run is scheduled to last 6 months and will have Coach Merrill running 13.1 miles a day.  Along the east coast route, Coach Merrill plans to speak at Universities, Colleges, community organizations, and high schools to spread his message of achieving positive mental health through positive physical health."

      Video of the team's arrival today is forthcoming, as well as an interview with the coach, who discloses what motivated him to begin his journey.

MADD Supports Ignition Interlock for 1st Time Offenders

Calling drunk driving the most frequently committed violent Crime, MADD Massachusetts (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) is testifying Tuesday before the Joint Committee on Transportation in support of expanding the alcohol ignition interlock system to include first time offenders. A person with the interlock is restricted to driving only one vehicle, which will start only if the offender first breathes into a device to test their alcohol blood content.

    Is this too harsh for first offense? Or is it about time? Does the punishment fit the crime?

Hopkinton Native, Former HPD employee, Makes Border Patrol

October 5, 2009 — Border Patrol Agent Jarrad D. Seely graduated from the CBP  Border Patrol Academy in Artesia, New Mexico from class number 889 on September 17, 2009 . He is the son of Tamara Dafiotis of Hopkinton, MA and the grandson of Eloise Seely of Hopkinton.

Agent Seely, who is also a graduate of Roger Williams University, will be assigned to the Laredo Sector

The U.S. Border Patrol Academy is recognized as having one of the most challenging curriculums in federal law enforcement. The Border Patrol Academy is tasked with training the largest influx of new agents in the history of any federal law enforcement training Academy. Those who attend the rigorous 55 day program must pass all departments including immigration law, physical techniques, driver training and firearms. Non Spanish speakers will be required to stay an additional 40 days and attend the task based language training program before reporting to a Border Patrol sector. October 5, 2009 — We held our 6^th Annual Hopkinton vs Ashland Softball game (pickup) yesterday (Sunday, 10-4). Cornell’s donated their field for the day…Hopkinton was victorious this year (27-17in a 9 inning game), and the Hopkinton team was comprised of  (L to R) Rich Schacterle, Mike Gallagher, Hal Whitehouse, Art Faden, Neal Dempsey, Luke Whitehouse (with trophy), Dana Beale, Alec Levine, and Frank Lecesse… Star performances by Alec Levine and Art Faden helped power Hopkinton to victory, along with a guest strong performance by Luke W, behind the plate…Chris LaFontaine captained the 2^nd place team for Ashland!  We will see them again in 2010! ~ The Team

Healthy Body = Healthy Mind

October 5, 2009 — Posing at the Johnny Kelly statue, from left, Planning Board Acting Chair Joe Markey, Running Club's Laura McKenzie, Board of Selectman Chairman Brian Herr,  and Coach Doug Merrill ran to Wellesley on a leg of the Coach's run to Florida yesterday. The coach will be speaking to Hopkinton High School freshmen on Tuesday about the importance of exercise in positive mental health. He is promoting the Power UP Foundation, which provides financial assistance to communities and programs promoting positive physical fitness, therefore positive mental health.

Chipping Away at Vandalism

October 4, 2009 — Nine year-old Ethan Student chips away with a rock hammer at some obscene graffiti that vandals sprayed on a rock at his East Hopkinton home, while his family looks on Sunday afternoon. The graffiti has been digitally obscured.

    Graffiti has been proliferating throughout town, with EMC Park a favorite of the vandals. Below is some vandalism sprayed onto the loop road over the weekend, misspelling and all.

HHS Students Raise $3,000 to Support Juvenile Diabetes Research

October 3, 2009 — Forty-two Hopkinton High School students participated today in a 5K Walk in Boston to support Juvenile Diabetes Research.  These Sophomores and Juniors didn't let a a deluge stop them from supporting a classmate while they collectively raised over $3,000 for the cause.

October 3, 2009 — A familiar face indeed to Hopkinton runners is Hopkinton resident Keiron Tumbleton, (who turns 44 this week) who won the New Hampshire Marathon today in Bristol, NH in the rain in a time of 2:39:08.

Michael's Run 2009

October 3, 2009 — The members of the Hopkinton Girls and Boys Cross Country Teams were among the participants in today's Michael's Run to benefit the Michael Carter-Lisnow Respite Center.

      Among the winners were, First Place in the Men's Division Cameron Fairbanks, center, and First Place in the Women's Division, his mom and team Coach, Jennifer Fairbanks, to his left.

High School Stadium Dedication on October 16, 2009

The Hopkinton Public Schools invite the public to attend an on-field recognition and stadium dedication ceremony prior to the start of the October 16th Homecoming Football Game.

The pre-game recognition moment will publicly honor the generosity of the Boston Athletic Association, the Hopkinton Athletic Association, the Hopkinton Athletics Boosters Club and an anonymous donor. Together, these organizations and one individual have donated approximately $400,000.00 toward the improvement of the bleachers, sound system, and scoreboard for a sports field that many school teams utilize. 

In addition to this private support, we will also celebrate the accessibility improvements to the stadium that resulted from Town Meeting funding for Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) improvements. The school district will specifically thank the citizens of Hopkinton for demonstrating their commitment to improving access to all town facilities.

The on-field ceremony will conclude with the dedication of the stadium in honor of David M. Hughes (File photo, center)  in recognition of his years of service as a teacher and coach in the Hopkinton Public Schools.

Likes Downtown Improvements

To the Editor:

I am very heartened to see all the energy focused on making downtown more pedestrian-friendly. The improvements to the side-walks, HPD's crosswalk operation and the meeting scheduled tomorrow to discuss ways to enhance walkablilty are all very encouraging.

As a community, everyone benefits from a thriving downtown, especially during these tough economic times. And though some may complain that there are larger issues to contend with, the improvements to basic quality of life issues such as this have far-reaching effects. A town that is responsive to citizens' concerns fosters pride of place and commitment from those same citizens.

Cyber-bullying Incidents High - Adolescent Health Survey

October 2, 2009 — Last night the School Committee received the results of the most recent MetroWest Adolescent Health Survey, funded by the MetroWest Community Health Care Foundation and administered anonymously to middle and high school students in 2008. According to the executive summary presented by Jill Leach, Wellness Department Head at the High School, the students are eating better and are engaging in more physical activity. However, they are also taking part in riskier behaviors including the use of alcohol and other substances, including cigarettes and inhalants.

Middle School Assistant Principal Jason Webster presented the summary of the Middle School results. He stated that the incidence of bullying, including cyberbullying, was high, with 60% of students reporting having been bullied in the past 12 months, mostly on school property. Since very few incidents are reported by students, or witnessed by staff, the assistant principal intends to ascertain where bullying happens most, so that more supervision can be provided for in those areas.

Leach credited the beFree! project with bringing teenage drinking numbers down from the last time the study was administered 2 years earlier. The percentage of students in Hopkinton who reported current use of alcohol was “significantly lower than the MetroWest region,” she said. However, the numbers she reported about teens who had ridden in a car with someone who had been drinking were “frightening.” One hundred and twelve teens said that they had been in a car driven by someone under 21 who had been drinking. Fifty-five admitted to having driven a car themselves after drinking — “an accident waiting to happen.”

According to Leach, the full report will be posted on the school website by early next week.

     The Gathering is a 1/2 hour cooking show created around preparing and hosting a dinner part. Taping is done in my home. giving cooking demonstration for dishes on the menu as I work.  The show ends with the dinner guests arriving and enjoying the meal.

     Terre Melisi has resided in Hopkinton since 1979 and has hosted countless dinner parties and special celebrations. So many that people began calling her home "the gather." While volunteering to cook breakfast at the Hopkinton Senior Center, she was asked if she would be interested in hosting a cooking show for HCAM-TV. She replied "I love to cook, I love to entertain, I love to talk, so sure, I'll give it a shot" and thought "The Gathering" would be a perfect name for the show.

    She hopes you tune in to "the Gathering" and experience for yourself that you don't need to be a professional chef, personal caterer or private party planner to be a gourmand and share it with your favorite people! ~ Terre
