Coming Soon to a Neighborhood Near You (Or to yours) Child Passenger Safety week September 12- 18
September 18, 2009 — Hopkinton Police Department has received a $10,000 grant from the Executive Office of Public Safety and Security for the purpose of helping parents with car seat installation and child safety helmets. The department has purchased a trailer that will eventually be equipped with car seats and helmets for demonstration in neighborhoods, or by appointment at the Police Headquarters with Officer Stephen Buckley or Officer Linda Higgins, and at the Fire Department with Lt. Patrick Gross. All are qualified to help or demonstrate new installations or to check existing ones. As more grants become available, said Officer Buckley on Thursday, the trailer will become equipped with the necessary equipment to take the show on the road. It will also have the Hopkinton Police patch put on all sides. "People should periodically check the child seats for safety. "And parents should always set a good example by wearing seatbelts themselves," said Officer Buckley. |

Selectman Chair Brian Herr Running 13.1 miles with Coach Doug Merrill “Run to the Key’s” campaign, October 4, 2009 and October 5, 2009
Coach Merrill, Author of “Fighting the Demon of Suicide” and Founder of the Power UP Foundation, is also in the process of organizing a historic run that is scheduled to begin October 4th, 2009 at a pre-game ceremony in Fenway Park, Boston, Massachusetts and to conclude April 3, 2010 in the Florida Keys. The run is scheduled to last 6 months and will have Coach Merrill running a ˝ marathon (13.1 miles) a day. Coach Merrill plans to speak at universities, colleges, community organizations, and high schools to spread his message of achieving positive mental health through improved physical health.
The goal of the run is to raise $25 million dollars for the “Power UP Foundation”. Community programs across the country that promote positive mental and increased physical health would be eligible to apply for a grant from the foundation. We are proud to announce
that our first annual telethon held this past Sunday on HCAM-TV was

We included songs from several of our children's productions (Willy Wonka, School House Rock, Aladdin, and Cinderella), our teen shows (Charlie Brown, Hopkinton Idol, and the Tone Deft a capella group), as well as adult performances (Broadway to Hollywood, USO Show, and Barbara Kessler - Open Mic artist).
We also featured live interviews with many of our wonderful community and theater supporters without whom we could not continue to provide top quality productions and theater/art programs. A big thank you to our volunteers who manned the phones and assisted in the studio and all of those who helped backstage. We also want to thank our friends at HCAM! Authorities Conducting Homicide Investigation In Connection With Victim Found In Wakefield Last Evening Police seek public's help
The body of the victim was first discovered last evening, September 15, at approximately 6:24 p.m. by a passerby who was walking in the area near Audubon Road in Wakefield. The victim was later identified as Abelino Perez Martinez, 32, of Woodlawn Avenue in Everett. Wakefield Police and Massachusetts State Police assigned to the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner is completing an autopsy to rule on the cause of death. Members of the public who believe that have information that may be helpful to the investigation can contact the Wakefield Police tip line at 339-219-4636 or Massachusetts State Police assigned to the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office at 781-897-6600. |

“The aim of the Junior National Young Leaders Conference is to inspire students to recognize their own leadership skills, measure their skills against those of current and former leaders and return home with new confidence in their ability to exercise positive influence within their communities,” said Marguerite Regan, Dean of Academic Affairs for the Congressional Youth Leadership Council (CYLC), the organization that sponsors JrNYLC. “Young people are not only welcome in Washington, D.C., they actually keep this city and our country running.”
Brianna Gallo, a 7th grader at Hopkinton Middle School was nominated by her 6th grade Social Studies Teacher Ms. Scott last year and will be attending the JrNYLC from September 19-24th. Brianna is a High honor roll student at HMS as well as a USA Swimming Athlete and swims year round with The Westborough Swim and Tennis Club. She will be representing Hopkinton at the conference. |

Clarification Regarding Wilson Street Diesel Spill:

To clarify,
the recent diesel spill on Wilson Street emanated from Air Products’ LNG
facility next door to Tennessee Gas
We sell/deliver natural gas to Nstar at the Wilson Street location, but Air Products operates the LNG plant. We share a common driveway with Air Products, and the diesel that spilled flowed down the driveway and into storm drains, possibly creating confusion early in the response.
Parenthetically, Air Products has done an excellent job thus far in cleaning up the spill, and we (Tennessee Gas) are cooperating in the response and assisting as needed.

Planning Board Approves Off-site Parking Plan for ZIO's Bistro Approval contingent on two-year agreements being signed
September 14, 2009 — The Planning Board approved a Shared Parking Special Permit for Jack Speranza and his tenant Zio's Bistro, Inc. at 15 Main Street this evening. Under the terms of the agreement, Mr. Speranza must have the unsigned agreements that he showed the board this evening signed by those involved before the special permit takes effect. Colella's, Mr. Speranza said, has offered 18 spaces at 61 Main Street, and John Burns has offered 6 spaces at 38-42 Main Street(Overgrown lot)/5 Walcott Street. The board declined to force Colella's or John Burns to record the transaction on their deed in land court, something the board said they had authority over. However, they said that it must be recorded on the 15 Main Street property deed. Board member Claire Wright said that Zio's customers weren't going to walk all the way down to Colella's. She said they would park in the nearest spaces, the ones now being used by Ciao Time. Someone asked the applicants to be sure and let their customers know, by signs, that there is overflow parking at Colella's. If one of the parties allowing the shared parking backs out, the owner must notify the Zoning Enforcement Officer of the change, and the property would no longer be in compliance with zoning regulations. Zoning Advisory Committee Chair Ken Weismantel later said that his committee will be taking up the challenge of designing new regulations that would lighten the parking burden on businesses locating downtown at their next meeting. Chuck Joseph appeared before the board asking for a two-year extension of his approval for the Hopkinton Square project at the corner of South and West Main Streets due the state of the economy. He received the approval, but not before members of the board expressed displeasure with the way the land was stripped, and one member compared it to the empty, overgrown lot downtown. Mr. Joseph explained that for one thing, the buildings were an insurance liability. In the past, he has added that prospective tenants would be better able to see the expanse of the land without the buildings. Legacy Farms Project Manager Steven Zieff (Photo, left) received a continuance until October 19 of the Public Hearing for the OSMUD Special Permit Application that would set the parameters for the development of 940 residential units and 450,000 square feet of retail/commercial space on land purchased from Weston Nurseries. The project has been on hold since their bank note from Wachovia, whic hwas taken over by Wells Fargo, was called in. Mr. Zieff said in a letter that he expects a closing on the refinancing in late October. He said that the group is spinning off the non-essential parcels to "gather working capital to pay down any outstanding issues [including property taxes] with the town." He said that the bank has told them not to spend any money. "I don't think that you-all could have special rules around the payment of property taxes. " said member Mark Abate. "It doesn't sit well with me that you can't pay your tax bills until you sell some of these tangential properties" "It would be irresponsible of us not to put pressure on you," he said. "The MacDowell family has been under significant pressure from Wachovia not to spend any money," said Mr. Zieff. Town Treasurer/Collector, Maureen Dwinnell said today that the town has placed liens on some of the Legacy Farms properties for non-payment of taxes. |

September 15, 16, 17 and 22, 23, 24 (Tuesdays through Thursdays) from 10-12 am and 1-3 pm each day. An extra day has been added and that is Tuesday, Sept. 22 from 5-7 pm.
All items that are brought in should be checked in at the front desk so that they may be itemized. The donor will then receive a numbered ticket for their items, and on the night of the auction, will receive their 50% of the sale price once it is sold. Of course, the person may also donate the entire selling price of the item if they so choose.

If you’d like to have dinner at the center, a menu of Beef Stew or Chef’s Salad Plate will be available in the dining room from 5-6 pm for a cost of $4.00. Jimmy Fund Walk 2009
September 13, 2009 — The Jimmy Fund Walk 2009 started, above, at the Boston Marathon Start line from 6:00 am this morning until 7:30 am in an undesignated "rolling start." Hopkinton Police Chief Thomas Irvin, inset above, was there with ten Hopkinton Officers who volunteered their time to be sure that the participants were safely underway. Chief Irvin would join other chiefs of police later in the walk with patients, who are walking in memory of Southborough Police Chief William Webber who died last year after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. There is no official count available at this moment, but some people sported bibs, below, over the 8,000 mark.

Roberta Ann Nealon, 66
She was born in Boston and grew up in Watertown and Waltham. A graduate of Framingham State College, she was a special needs teacher in Hopkinton and at Keefe Tech High School. She was proud of her many years of volunteer work and fundraising at Framingham Union Hospital and Michael Lisnow Respite Center in Hopkinton.
She leaves behind her devoted husband and best friend of 45 years, Robert T. Nealon Jr, son and daughter-in-law Robert Nealon III and Jennifer Nealon, son and daughter-in-law Joseph Nealon and Annette Nealon, son and daughter-in-law Jon Nealon and Jenny Raskin, sister Irene DeSisto and parents Edward and Ada Restieri. Roberta was the proud grandmother of Robert J. Nealon, Mary Nealon, Michael Nealon, Leslie Nealon, Alexandria Wertz, Grace Nealon, Charles Nealon, Lucas Nealon, Tess Nealon Raskin, and Bruno Nealon Raskin. She is also survived by many loving brothers and sisters-in-law, nephews, nieces, grand nephews and grand nieces.
Her fondest memories were of time spent with family at Disneyworld, Florida, and Cape Cod and she always considered raising her children and grandchildren her greatest achievement.
Roberta will be deeply missed by her family and many friends as she touched our lives with her loving acts of kindness throughout the years.
A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 17th at Saint John The Evangelist Church, Church Street, Hopkinton, MA 01748. Following the service, all are welcome to join the family for a gathering in the Parish Center.

So, not only is that fantastic figure a milestone — who could have even imagined it? — but this month is also the sixth anniversary of the September, 2003 start of HopNews. We have a lot of people to thank; so many that I won't mention even one for fear of leaving someone out. But there have been — and continue to be — some highly professional paid and unpaid contributors to this effort, not to mention all of the 16-hour days I have put in, and the work Eric does behind the scenes at the office. And from everyone involved, I have seen labors of love. Thank you to all of the readers and contributors, as well as the sponsors, who have paid for those 16-hour days and more. That's not all! As most people know, Photographic Images was the springboard for HopNews. Photographic Images is entering its 17th year at 24 Main Street. When we opened in 1992, wedding photography was a booming business, something I had done professionally from my home since 1989. So this is the 20th anniversary of Photographic images. 16, 2009 — Board of Selectman Chairman Brian Herr will accompany Coach
Doug Merrill on a half marathon October 4th from Fenway Park,
Boston, Massachusetts and also into Hopkinton on October 5, 2009,
promoting the Power UP Foundation, which provides financial assistance
to communities and programs promoting positive physical fitness,
therefore positive mental health.
Lake
great success! We raised close to $5,000 through the generous
donations of supporters who watched it live or streamed it from
their computer. ESL plans to use the monies raised to continue to
offer programs including children's theater, musical and drama
productions, and ultimately to work towards getting a new ESL
theater.
WASHINGTON,
D.C. – This fall, over 250 outstanding middle school students from
across the United States will take part in an extraordinary leadership
conference in Washington, D.C. Themed

to keeping the community safer and fiscally stronger, the Town/City of
Hopkinton has received $32,811 back on its workers compensation and
property casualty insurance costs. The town / city earned the credits
through its MIIA membership and participation in loss prevention and
risk management activities which are part of the Rewards program offered
by the Massachusetts Interlocal Insurance Association (MIIA),
Hopkinton’s insurance provider.

had likely visited within a recent time frame of the counter hitting the
number. What that means is that the counter number cannot be
artificially added to. In other words, a website owner with that counter
could not cheat and refresh the page to increase traffic to defraud
advertisers, because it does not count. Oh, I suppose some could
do it, but it would have to be complicated and time consuming. In fact,
the counter is rather conservative, because it only counts visitors who
allow cookies and it doesn't count "refreshes" or recent repeat visits.
In reality, we likely hit 4 million real visits months ago.
